Jurrien Timber latest: Journalist shares big Arsenal update

Arsenal have verbally agreed to pay £36 million plus £4 million in add-ons for the signing of Jurrien Timber from Ajax and they're "closing in" on a move, according to journalist Simon Collings.

Who else will Arsenal sign this summer?

As widely reported, the Gunners have finally reached an agreement to sign West Ham United star Declan Rice this summer, coming after fears of a Man City hijack.

Arsenal had two bids rejected for the 24-year-old and City briefly entered the race, but following a third offer of £100m plus £5m in add-ons, the treble-winners pulled out and Mikel Arteta is now close to sealing Rice.

This comes after the north Londoners signed Germany international Kai Havertz from Chelsea in a deal worth £65 million, with Arsenal seemingly determined to mount another serious title challenge after falling just short last season.

In terms of other incomings, there have been reports of a pursuit for Southampton starlet Romeo Lavia on top of Rice as Arsenal seemingly look to orchestrate a midfield overhaul. Defence is also of importance and Arteta's side have been heavily linked with a move for Timber of Ajax.

The 22-year-old has been at the centre of Arsenal transfer talks this last fortnight, with reporter Collings of The Evening Standard sharing an exciting update.

According to his information, Arsenal are "closing in" on the signing of Timber and have verbally agreed to pay £36 million plus £4 million in add-ons for him.

Talks are apparently advanced and a fee is set to be finalised, with negotiations expected to accelerate as the defender is excited by the prospect of signing.

Timber has apparently pushed to join with both Ajax and Arsenal keen to wrap up a deal soon.

Who is Jurrien Timber?

The Dutchman, who can operate as an inverted full-back similar to Oleksandr Zinchenko, has been revered for his passing range, brilliant composure and versatility (The Telegraph).

Timber was a mainstay at Ajax over the 2022/2023 season, playing more Eredivisie minutes than any of his teammates over his 34 league starts (WhoScored).

Interestingly, the young full-back also boasts a higher pass accuracy (91.7%) than any other Ajax regular with more than one start, indicating he could be a sure-fire option for Arteta's fluid system at Arsenal (WhoScored).

Last year, members of the media like journalist Antonio Mango hailed also Timber as a "generational superstar" and Ajax's "most reliable" player that season.

Zampa secures consolation win for Australia

Adam Zampa’s dismantling of Sri Lanka arrived too late to salvage the series for Australia, and also too late for his skiddy, accurate wrist spin to be considered for the Test team to face India in Pune from Thursday

Adam Zampa’s dismantling of Sri Lanka arrived too late to salvage the series for Australia, and also too late for his skiddy, accurate wristspin to be considered for the Test team to face India in Pune from Thursday. The frequent omission of Zampa from Australia’s ODI and Twenty20 sides – despite an excellent record in both formats – has been a mystery for quite some time, and there appeared to be thinly veiled frustration on the part of the bowler as he accounted for the series’ pivotal player Asela Gunaratne, Chamara Kapugedara and Dasun Shanaka in quick succession to push a target of 188 beyond the reach of the visitors. His wickets came not from any extravagant turn but instead useful changes of pace and unrelenting attack on the stumps, winning a pair of back foot lbw verdicts from the umpire Paul Wilson either side of another slider that bowled Kapugedara between bat and pad. Australia’s selectors had admitted to choosing an “attacking” spinner in Mitchell Swepson over what the panel’s chairman Trevor Hohns called a more “defensive” operator in Zampa.Sri Lanka made a rapid start to their chase but a sturdy Australian effort with the bat meant that they did not have much room to lose momentum. The captain Aaron Finch and his opening partner Michael Klinger both contributed half centuries, before Ben Dunk and Travis Head provided aggressive support through the middle overs. At 0 for 41 in the fourth over, the visitors appeared well in control of proceedings, largely due to the early pyrotechnics of Dilshan Munaweera – including 20 runs off Jhye Richardson’s opening over. However, James Fulkner, Richardson and Head each coaxed outfield catches from Sri Lanka’s top-order batsmen, before Zampa arrived to attack the stumps with quite compelling effect. Those wickets meant that Gunaratne was not around to perform his third Houdini act in succession, and left Faulkner to lead the mop-up operation and the Australians to enjoy the consolation of a win in the final home international of the summer. Australia will next be glimpsed in coloured clothing at the ODI Champions Trophy in May and June. The hosts had recalled Zampa in place of Andrew Tye for the dead rubber, banking on his spin bowling at the ground where he also plays for South Australia. Sri Lanka called in Shanaka in place of the suspended Niroshan Dickwella, leaving Kusal Mendis to take over the wicketkeeper’s gloves and Munaweera to open.Finch had a hearty slice of good fortune in the first over of the evening when he tugged Lasith Malinga to midwicket and was dropped by Munaweera. He made up for it with a series of meaty blows inside the powerplay, while Klinger took some more time to get himself moving. The openers were parted at a healthy 79 in the ninth over, before Ben Dunk and then Travis Head offered further acceleration. At one point a tally beyond 200 looked more than plausible, but Head’s exit and the run out of a steadily building Klinger left the innings to peter out somewhat in the final overs. On a good pitch it appeared an open chase, before Zampa closed the door with some panache.

'We remember what Rahane has done' – Kumble

The Indian coach has hinted that Karun Nair’s triple-century as Ajinkya Rahane’s replacement will not earn him an automatic spot in the one-off Test in Hyderabad

‘Jadeja, Ashwin proven match winners’ – Kumble

India coach Anil Kumble has hinted that Karun Nair’s triple-hundred in India’s last Test might not earn him an automatic spot in the XI for the one-off Test against Bangladesh on Thursday. Kumble said while the performance was a huge boost to the overall make-up of the side, they have not forgotten what Ajinkya Rahane – whom Nair had replaced – has done for the team. As things stand, if India stick to their combination of five bowlers, only one of them will play.A finger injury had ruled out Rahane from the last two Tests against England, paving the way for Nair to get an extended run in the middle-order. His 303 not out in Chennai showed India’s batting riches went very deep, but if he makes way for Rahane, he will perhaps become one of a very few men who miss their next Test after scoring a triple-ton. In April 1930, England’s Andy Sandham made 325 in the timeless Test against West Indies and did not play again, although that may have been because he was 39 years old then.”We still haven’t thought about the combination but it is nice that Karun took his opportunity and did what he did in Chennai,” Kumble said. “It is fantastic for a young cricketer to come in and score a triple-hundred. But we know what Ajinkya has done for this team. Ajinkya’s performances have been phenomenal across conditions. It is nice that somebody who came in to replace Ajinkya because of the injury in Mumbai, took three or four innings and was able to score a three-hundred. It’s nice to have to have that kind of contribution and that kind of ability from the youngsters.”Kumble lent his support to M Vijay and KL Rahul to keep opening the batting, and said Abhinav Mukund has been selected as back-up. Vijay and Rahul have been the most used pair at the top of the order for India in the last 12 months, but they have only put together a single 50-plus stand during this period.”I don’t think the opening slot is a concern at all. Vijay and Rahul have played wonderfully well in the last series. It’s just that you need a back-up. As far as we are concerned, openers have had [injury] issues, in the West Indies and in the home series as well. It’s just a concern.”Abhinav brings in not just the experience of playing at the international level but also lots of runs in the domestic season gone by. So he is in good form. And it’s a reward for what he has been able to achieve in the domestic circuit,” he said.Kumble said he was also keen on keeping Hardik Pandya in consideration given his combination of bowling at a fair clip and his aggressive batting in the middle-order. Pandya returned from injury against England in last month’s ODI series and Kumble said his skills will be handy when they play abroad.”We certainly want to keep Hardik in the mix,” Kumble said. “He is someone who has the ability to become a good allrounder even in the longer format. It’s rare that you have someone who can run in and bowl at close to 140 kph and bat in the middle order.”He hasn’t been tested in the longer format. But we believe that if he is part of this mix. Whenever the opportunity comes, we will try him out. In the future, whenever we travel outside India, he will be someone we will probably look at.”

Man Utd: Exceptional £43m Target Would Improve Martinez

Manchester United looking to be closing in on a £43m deal to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to Corriere del Ticino, via The Faithful MUFC.

Manchester United transfer news – could they sign Andre Onana?

Given David De Gea's unresolved contract issue, which doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, Man United are in need of a number one as things stand. And, as reports in Italy suggest, Onana could be that new shot-stopper.

The Inter Milan man would be Erik ten Hag's first signing this summer as the Red Devils look to take things up a level or two at Old Trafford.

After De Gea's season to forget in the last campaign, too, it comes as little surprise that United have their sights set on finding a new number one – a move which signals a sign of intent.

Indeed, the report states that Inter may well be willing to cash in on the stopper after the Red Devils lodged a bid of £43m.

A deal to sign Onana would, therefore, eat away at Ten Hag's budget who has reportedly been told that he has £120m to spend unless he moves players on this summer.

Would Andre Onana make Lisandro Martinez look better?

The best goalkeepers in the world can make even the most unreliable defenders look far better than they are, and vice-versa – see De Gea last season, for example.

Onana would reverse the roles at United by making the backline look even better than they already look after a solid season together last time out – conceding just 43 league goals and helping De Gea secure the Golden Glove.

The Inter shot-stopper would help show off a trait that Lisandro Martinez hasn't been able to express as much during his United career so far. And that's his ability on the ball.

De Gea's poor distribution often leaves United forced to scrap any thoughts of playing from the back and to play over the press, rather than through it.

Andre Onana Chelsea target

Last season, the Spaniard attempted 11.8 passes per game, completing just 3.71 – a completion rate of 31.4%. By comparison, Onana attempted 11.3 per game, completed 4.38, with a completion rate of 38.9%, as per FBref.

For context of Onana's quality, Alisson Becker had a 41% completion rate last season, meaning that the United target isn't far off one of the best goalkeepers in the world in terms of passing ability.

Meanwhile, Martinez's stats show that, when given the chance, he can comfortably progress from the back. As per FBref, in his debut campaign at Old Trafford, he completed more passes per 90 than Declan Rice. Simply give him the chance and Martinez will play a key role in bypassing a press.

When at Ajax together in the 2019/20 season, Onana had an impressive 45.04% pass completion rate, completing over four passes per game. Martinez, with the goalkeeper supplying the passes, made 9.24 progressive passes per 90.

However, last season, with De Gea behind him, the Argentina international made just 3.53 per game in a frustrating drop-off.

Onana's quality is recognised by the best in the world, too, with Pep Guardiola full of praise for the shot-stopper prior to Manchester City's Champions League final victory over Inter.

The Manchester City boss said, via Manchester Evening News: "They [Inter] have a real good process, starting from Onana, an exceptional goalkeeper in the build-up – one of the best in the world right now."

With that said, it's clear that if United sign Onana, he would take them and particularly Martinez up another level.

Newcastle In Contact Over Transfer For 13-Goal EFL Talent

Newcastle United have put the feelers out for Harvey Barnes at Leicester, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting via Caught Offside that there are "contacts" from the Toon over a deal.

How good is Harvey Barnes?

The winger starred for Leicester in the 2022/23 season and despite the Foxes being relegated down to the Championship, the youngster shone. He played in 34 Premier League games for the side and contributed 13 goals with one assist along the way, but it wasn't enough to keep his side up. It was though, his best ever goal haul – showing that when the going got tough with his side, he was able to produce the goods.

In fact, the 25-year-old has never ventured away from Leicester on a permanent basis. The only times he has ever played for a club other than the Foxes has been out on various loan spells. He broke onto the scene as an 18-year-old during a stint with MK Dons in League One and was also given a go in the Championship by Barnsley. After bagging six and five goals respectively for each of those teams, he really found his feet in the second tier with West Brom five years ago. That led to him earning a spot in the Foxes first-team upon his return and he hasn't looked back since.

Are Newcastle United signing Harvey Barnes?

With the side now facing the prospect of at least a season in the second tier though, it means that he could be available, with plenty of clubs higher up the pyramid now sniffing around him. One such side is Newcastle, with the Toon certainly showing a keen interest in bringing Barnes back to the Premier League.

Now, it appears things are slightly further forward for the club, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting via Caught Offside that the side have "contacts" over the player but that nothing is "advanced" as of yet. He stated: "Barnes is appreciated by Newcastle. At the moment it’s not particularly close or advanced, but there are contacts, as he’s one of the players they like."

The England man has showcased his ability in producing the goods at the highest level already, having regularly hit the back of the net over the course of his top flight career. He has a total of 35 Premier League goals to his name for example, with 25 assists to go alongside it. With a goal contribution tally of 60 in 113 starts then, it means his rate stands at an impressive 0.55 – meaning he averages one or the other, every other game.

If Newcastle were to add him to their ranks then, it could be another boost for their squad as they look to challenge in both the league and in Europe. Journalist Josh Bunting has been full of praise for the forward, as he called a strike from the 25-year-old earlier this season "stunning" and "important" for the Foxes. And whilst he wasn't able to keep them up, he did show he could help lead a team from the front line – and now the Toon seemingly want him to help their attack too.

Supreme Court clears ambiguity on nine-year cap rule

The Supreme Court has clarified that office-bearers of state associations will not be barred from holding posts in the BCCI by virtue of holding office for nine years in state units

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-20174:24

Ugra: Officials will see the clarification as a victory

The Supreme Court clarified on Friday that office-bearers can hold separate terms of nine years each at a state association and the BCCI. This means that the BCCI’s existing office-bearers – the joint-secretary, treasurer and five vice-presidents – could retain their posts. There has been some confusion over the nine-year tenure cap since the time the Lodha Committee submitted its recommendations, and some state associations had sought clarity on the matter. There was further ambiguity when the court modified its January 2 order, which had said: “A person shall be disqualified from being an Office-Bearer if he or she has been an Office-Bearer of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 9 years.” On January 3, the court tweaked that to say: “Has been an Office-Bearer of the BCCI or a State Association for a cumulative period of 9 years.”However, on January 20, the court said that its January 3 modification was likely “to create some ambiguity” and hence in a fresh clarification said an administrator would be disqualified if he “has been an office bearer of the BCCI for nine years or a State Association for the same period.” While the ruling was interpreted by BCCI’s office-bearers as an indication that they could continue for nine years separately at BCCI and their respective states, the CoA thought otherwise. It pointed out that it would stick to the Lodha Committee’s interpretation of the court’s order until a new directive was issued by the Supreme Court. On Friday, though, the Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Dipak Mishra, put the doubts of state associations to rest and said the order passed on January 20 was “clear as a cloudless sky”.”When the matter was taken up on 20th January, 2017, a submission was advanced that that clause is likely to create some kind of ambiguity and, accordingly, this Court further stated as follows: ‘has been an office bearer of the BCCI for nine years or a State Association for the same period’,” the bench said.”What has been meant by the clarificatory order is that, if an office bearer has completed nine years in any post in the BCCI, he shall stand disqualified to become an office bearer of the BCCI. Similarly, if a person holds the post of office bearer in any capacity for any State Association for nine years, he shall stand disqualified for contesting or holding any post or office of the State Association. To avoid any kind of maze, we proceed to state by giving an example. If a person has held the post of office bearer in respect of a State Association for a period of nine years, he will not be disqualified to contest for the post of office bearer of the BCCI.”The original recommendation regarding eligibility, approved by the Supreme Court on July 18 last year, had made it possible for an individual to serve nine years each at the BCCI and a state association.A BCCI office-bearer’s cooling-off period could have been a three-year term at their state association, after which they could once again contest an election for a BCCI position. And if they won the BCCI post, the ensuing three-year term would serve as their cooling-off period from holding office at state level. An individual could therefore have spent 18 years in Indian cricket administration between the BCCI and his state association. But the Lodha Committee interpreted the modified order as thus: if an individual had finished nine years as an office-bearer, whether at BCCI or state level or both combined, that individual was ineligible to continue as an office-bearer at the BCCI or state level effective immediately.
