Tottenham Eye Valverde 2.0 In "Highly Talented" £34m Gem

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race for Celta Vigo starlet, Gabri Veiga, with the promising playmaker having caught the eye following a breakout 2022/23 campaign in La Liga.

What are the latest Tottenham transfer rumours?

Following the news that Spurs have secured the signing of Israeli winger, Manor Solomon, French outlet Le10 Sport are now reporting that the Lilywhites are to set compete for the signing of the exciting Spaniard, with both Arsenal and Chelsea also in the mix for the 21-year-old's signature.

The Premier League trio are also likely to face interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid in the battle to land the 6 foot 1 ace, according to The Guardian, with the youngster up for grabs for a fee of around €40m (£34m), due to the presence of a release clause in his existing contract.

This search for a new midfielder comes amid claims that Ange Postecoglou is set to allow Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to depart ahead of next season, with the Denmark international currently attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, as well as clubs in Germany.

What position does Gabri Veiga play?

The Spain youth international – who was recently part of the side that lost to England in the final of the U21 European Championship – has typically operated in an advanced midfield berth during his senior career to date, ensuring he could potentially slot in nicely into Postecoglou's preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Lauded as "highly talented box-to-box midfielder" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the emerging superstar appears to share a positional likeness to fellow La Liga ace, Federico Valverde, according to GOAL's Thomas Hindle, with the journalist previously writing:

'Both are tall athletic midfielders who like to shoot from distance, they share similar dribbling styles, and a remarkable versatility that could see them function in a number of different systems. And, like Valverde in Real Madrid's counter-attacking setup, Veiga is deadly on the break.'

The pair are both seemingly alike in being able to make an impact in the final third from their midfield berths, with Veiga having racked up 11 goals and four assists in 36 league games last term, with Valverde also impressing with seven goals and four assists from his 34 league outings in Spain's top-flight.

The comparison between the two men can also be made due to their ability to drive forward from deep with ease, with the Celta sensation ranking in the top 12% in Europe's top five leagues among those in his position for progressive carries, while the Madrid machine is just ahead as he ranks in the top 9% in that regard.

That likeness between Veiga and Valverde is noteworthy due to the latter man's standing as one of the finest in the game in his position, with BT Sport pundit Joe Cole suggesting back in November that the "box-to-box" ace is "on the verge of becoming the best".

The Uruguayan international was notably the "unsung hero" in Los Blancos' Champions League final triumph over Liverpool in 2022, as per Cole, having also been lauded as "untouchable" by manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

While young Veiga has a way to go to try and emulate the 24-year-old – having made just 55 appearances to date in his embryonic senior career – it would represent a real coup for Postecoglou if he could find his own version of the Madrid machine this summer.

Men's cricket a chance for 2022 Commonwealth Games

Birmingham are set to bid to be replacement hosts for the 2022 event – following Durban having the Games removed from them – and would look to include men’s cricket

Men’s cricket could return to the Commonwealth Games as early as 2022 if Birmingham is chosen as host city.ESPNcricinfo understands that the city has been invited to bid for the Games by the UK government after Durban, which was originally scheduled to be the host city, was obliged to withdraw due to financial and political issues.Women’s cricket was already included in the Durban schedule but Neil Snowball, the Warwickshire chief executive and a member of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games bid company, has confirmed the intention to include men’s cricket, too, subject to the agreement of the ECB and ICC. The format would be T20.The games would be held at Edgbaston and at Worcestershire’s New Road home.Birmingham will not be the only city vying to step-in as hosts. Cities in Canada, Malaysia and Australia are all expected to apply, while Liverpool have also confirmed their interest. Liverpool are not thought likely to include cricket among the sporting events.Birmingham does have a couple of considerable advantages, though. As part of their bid to host the Games in 2026, they hired an independent company (Origin Sports) to put together a feasibility study that is understood to confirm their readiness for the event while, unlike some rival candidates, the city already has the vast majority of the venues – including the Alexander Stadium, Edgbaston, Villa Park, and the National Indoor Arena – required to host such an event in working order. The city does currently lack a 50m swimming pool, though one is scheduled to be opened in 2021.Applications for the bid have to be received by the UK government by April 28 with a decision made by the end of July. While the ECB has previously given their support for the idea of cricket returning to the Games, the support of the ICC cannot yet be guaranteed. India are scheduled to be the tourists to England in 2022, which might render their involvement more likely, but it is far from impossible that individual Commonwealth members could opt out of the Games even if the ICC grant their approval. England did not send a team on the only previous time cricket was included in the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998. On that occasion South Africa defeated Australia in the final.Cricket is not currently one of the mandatory events incorporated into the Commonwealth Games but is on the list of optional sports that host cities have the power to add to their staging of the event as they see fit and with the support of the relevant sport’s governing body. The Commonwealth Games might also be considered a stepping-stone towards cricket returning to the Olympics. Rugby 7s followed a similar route, appearing in the 1998 Commonwealth Games and progressing to the Olympics in 2016.”It’s an obvious stepping-stone,” Snowball told ESPNcricinfo, “and, subject to ICC and ECB approval, we hope we can progress this four years earlier than we originally anticipated.”We feel we have a very strong bid. Usually cities have seven years to prepare to host such an event, but we are certain we can deliver an outstanding Games in 2022 that includes men’s and women’s cricket.”

T20 leagues could eye 'unemployed' Australian players – ACA

Cricket Australia risks having its best players targeted by Twenty20 leagues around the world as a result of the ongoing pay dispute, the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) has warned

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-2017

David Warner and other elite Australian cricketers could be targeted by T20 leagues around the world if the pay stand-off with Cricket Australia continues•BCCI

Cricket Australia risks having its best players targeted by Twenty20 leagues around the world as a result of the ongoing pay dispute, the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) has warned. The existing Memorandum of Understanding between the players and Cricket Australia expires on June 30, and a stand-off regarding a new agreement continues between the two parties. The players are adamant that the existing pay model, in which players share in CA’s revenue, must continue, while the board is equally resolute in its aim to move away from the system.David Warner last week said that if the disagreement continued over the coming months, in a worst-case scenario Australia could find itself without a team for next summer’s home Ashes series. Unless a new deal is reached, or the existing MoU is extended, players would effectively be unemployed, and thus free to sign with any cricket league around the world.Sydney’s newspaper reported on Tuesday that while some English counties could be interested in signing Australians for the T20 Blast to begin in July, a bigger threat could be South Africa’s new T20 tournament, which will clash with the Australian home summer. The ACA chief executive, Alistair Nicholson, said such reports were unsurprising.”To threaten Australia’s cricketers shows an apparent lack of appreciation of international circumstances,” Nicholson said of CA’s approach. “Times have changed. The commercial reality of the international cricket world is that our cricketers are in high demand for more money all over the world.”CA forcing them into unemployment is an open invitation to the international cricket world. It’s a dangerous mistake and one that is completely unnecessary. And it compounds the existing error of dismantling revenue sharing which is the best defence against international forces.”Australian cricketers, men and women both, want to play in Australia, for Australia and for their states and T20 teams. When you threaten them with unemployment you place them squarely in the sights of the new cricket world.”Nicholson also said it was important to note that Australia’s elite international cricketers were, by sticking together with the rest of the playing group around the country, effectively costing themselves money.”The top players are going into bat for the domestic players, female players and grassroots cricket. That’s what this dispute is largely about,” he said. “And what they are asking for is simply to keep what they already have. The players are asking for 22.5% of revenue for them and 22.5% for grass roots, leaving CA with 55% of revenue.”If they were being greedy they would have taken the deals CA were offering them to walk away from their colleagues. David Warner, for example, could actually be worse off for sticking by his mates. That’s to his great credit.”Ian Chappell, who was a leading figure in the World Series Cricket rift of 40 years ago, said he was pleased to see the way Warner and his colleagues in the Australia team were standing up for the domestic cricketers.”I’m delighted the players are sticking together and staying strong on it,” Chappell told AAP. “From afar it looks as though the board are trying to splinter the players, which I find a rather strange tactic. Maybe the board thought ‘you know what the players are like’.”They were working on the theory of greed, that you keep the top blokes happy with money and they won’t care about the rest. It looks like they’ve picked the wrong target.”Although Chappell conceded that in such disagreements there were generally faults on both sides, he believed that such negotiations were best handled differently in sport than in the business world.”Some ploys might work for Rio Tinto and might work with some businesses and some industries,” Chappell said, referencing the fact that CA’s chairman David Peever was previously managing director of mining giant Rio Tinto. “But what you’ve got here is 100% membership of a union.”And cricketers are more than employees of a business. As a board you risk putting down your most important assets. It’s the top players who attract people to the game. To play, watch it on TV and at grounds.”

Man United Hold Discussions Over Transfer For 24-Year-Old Striker

Manchester United's search for a striker has seen them speak to two strikers at once, with The Athletic reporting that the Red Devils have held talks with Randal Kolo Muani alongside Rasmus Hojlund.

What is the latest Manchester United transfer news?

The Premier League side have once more claimed a spot in the Champions League for next season, having climbed into the top four in 2022/23. They also reached the FA Cup final, where they suffered a defeat to rivals Man City. Erik ten Hag though will be looking to build on those achievements in the next campaign – and that has already involved doing plenty of transfer business to ensure the squad is up to standard.

One of the more recent names that appears to be on United's radar is that of Federico Chiesa. The Juventus winger could be available for sale this summer, with the Serie A outfit looking to sell on some of their current stars to free up funds. The Italy international is one of the names that could be shown the door and previously it had only been Newcastle and Liverpool with an interest in the 25-year-old. Now though, it looks as though the Red Devils have also put him on their own transfer radar.

In terms of deals that are advancing more, Rasmus Hojlund is the big name at the moment. The Atalanta striker has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford for most of the transfer window, but United look finally set to make a concrete bid for his services. It appears as though terms with the youngster are already agreed but the fee is the only stumbling block. United have tried to offer Fred to the Italian outfit but they would prefer just a cash deal instead.

Randal Kolo Muani

Are Manchester United signing Randal Kolo Muani?

Now, in a report on Hojlund from The Athletic, it has been revealed that the Red Devils are not only speaking to the Atalanta man. It transpires that the Premier League outfit have other potential striking targets on their radar and that Randal Kolo Muani is one of them. It suggests that the side have already spoken to the attacker, with "parallel" discussions underway alongside their current ones with Hojlund.

It means that, should a deal for the young forward fall through, they may already have a contingency in place with the Eintracht Frankfurt ace, or the pair could even be signed to play up front together, such was the glaring lack of a proper goalscorer last season.

Kolo Muani seems as though he would be a real force in attack for the Red Devils if they did end up signing him. His former coach Vincent Santos has stated the 24-year-old already had "explosiveness" back when he coached the striker in his youth days and that he loved "dribbling" with the ball and was always "decisive" in crucial moments on the pitch, which sounds reminiscent of a young Anthony Martial.

With United in need of someone to bolster their forward line and find the back of the net on a more regular basis, the Frenchman – who had 15 league goals in 2022/23 – looks like he could fit the bill perfectly if he moved to Old Trafford.

Liverpool Could Sign ‘Devastating’ £30m Henderson Upgrade

As Jordan Henderson edges ever closer to the Liverpool exit, a ready-made upgrade in Franck Kessie could be set to join from Barcelona.

What is the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Liverpool captain Henderson, as well as midfield team-mate Fabinho, are widely expected to join clubs in Saudi Arabia in the coming days.

Despite signing Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, those exits would leave Jurgen Klopp light in midfield as James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also left this summer.

Romeo Lavia is believed to be Klopp's priority midfield target, but The Athletic's David Ornstein has reported that the Reds' initial bid of £37m has been rejected – and might be some way short of the Saints' own valuation.

Plenty of other alternatives have been linked with the Premier League heavyweights, including Barcelona's Kessie. According to reports in Spain on Tuesday, Kessie has turned down advances from teams in Saudi, while Barca are reluctant to entertain Juventus' offer of a loan deal as they want cash.

Liverpool are said to be one of numerous English clubs in the running to sign Kessie, whom Spanish outlet Sport previously suggested the Reds value at €35m (£30m), with fellow big-six sides Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea also showing an interest.

How good is Franck Kessie?

Kessie has been on the radar of Premier League teams for a number of years now, right from his days with Atalanta, which ultimately paved the way for a move to AC Milan in 2019.

After three years at San Siro, Kessie arrived at Barcelona 12 months ago on a free after his deal with Milan expired, but he made just seven LaLiga starts under Xavi in his maiden campaign in Catalonia.

Still aged just 26, Kessie will feel that his best years are ahead of him, and the Ivory Coast international certainly boasts plenty of experience at the top level.

Predominantly used as a pure central midfielder, Kessie's main strengths are helping to break up play and keep things ticking over, which is very similar to Henderson's role at Anfield.

Indeed, when comparing the two players, they are very alike in a number of metrics. Using Kessie's figures from his final season at Milan, given he was not given a run of starts by Barcelona, the Ivorian won 0.90 tackles per 90 minutes and registered 0.90 interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

That compares to one tackle per 90 for Henderson and a near enough identical 0.91 interceptions, while they also completed a similar number of passes (87.5% for Kessie v 83% for Henderson).

Arguably the main difference between the pair is that, while Henderson is happy to bring the ball forward, he does not tend to find himself in the opposition box all that much, averaging just 1.96 touches per 90 in that zone last season. By comparison, Kessie averaged 2.27 per 90 for Milan.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

That is nicely reflected in the goalscoring stats, as Kessie scored six times for Milan in 2021-22, whereas Henderson did not net for Liverpool in the league last season – though he did 'out-assist' Kessie 2-0.

As former Milan striker Antonio Cassano said two years ago, Kessie is a "devastating" player who "scores, assists, has personality, has quality, doesn't lose the ball and is intelligent".

While not all of those qualities have been seen up close by Barcelona so far, Kessie could potentially get the chance to show just how good he is should he arrive at Anfield.

Northants avoid follow-on and match dies

Kent and Northamptonshire played out a dull, high-scoring draw at Beckenham after Josh Cobb and the Northants lower order comfortably made the 24 more runs they required to avoid the follow-on early on the final day

ECB Reporters Network06-Jul-2017
ScorecardKent and Northamptonshire played out a dull, high-scoring draw at Beckenham after Josh Cobb and the Northants lower order comfortably made the 24 more runs they required to avoid the follow-on early on the final day.Northants, resuming on 528 for 7 in reply to Kent’s mammoth 701 for 7 declared, were eventually bowled out for 568. Kent then replied with 184 for 3 in sizzling temperatures, and in front of a sparse crowd, and they took 11 points from this Specsavers County Championship Division Two match and Northants 9.Daniel Bell-Drummond played on to Ben Sanderson on 5, but Sean Dickson made 60 in a second wicket stand of 101 with Joe Denly, who went on to 78 not out before hands were shaken at 4.50pm. Denly, who made 182 in Kent’s first innings, now has more than 900 championship runs this season, at an average above 60, with three hundreds and four more scores above fifty.Dickson, the first innings triple-centurion, skied Max Holden’s off spin to cover after totalling 378 runs in the match, while Denly took his match run aggregate to 260 as Kent captain Sam Northeast kept him leisurely company against an assortment of Northants’ slow bowling – which included the offerings of wicketkeeper Adam Rossington, with skipper Alex Wakely deputising behind the stumps. As the game meandered to its conclusion, indeed, it was a moot point as to whether what was on show could be deemed first-class cricket. Perhaps the championship regulations should allow the umpires to call matches off early, but to their credit Kent’s batsmen did not try to smash the gentle bowling to all parts – merely walking singles into the deep field amid the odd boundary.Northeast, in fact, gifted Ben Duckett his maiden first-class wicket when he skied an attempted big hit at a full toss to cover, on 27. Adam Rouse finished 8 not out.At the start of the day Northants did not lose another wicket until the follow on target of 552 had been passed, with Cobb off driving Pakistan leg spinner Yasir Shah for four to take his side beyond that score.Graeme White, on 11, then skied Shah to mid on before both Nathan Buck and No 11 Sanderson fell cheaply to leave Cobb 34 not out. Buck was leg-before to Shah, as he shaped to play to leg off the back foot, and Sanderson slogged James Tredwell’s off spin to mid on to go for a duck.Northants’ 568 was a record total in first-class cricket against Kent, beating the previous best of 561 for 8 declared at Canterbury in 1995.

Crystal Palace: Hodgson move for "unbelievable" player to "get done"

Crystal Palace bringing Everton winger Demarai Gray to Selhurst Park is a deal that Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor thinks will 'end up getting done' this window.

Is Demarai Gray moving to Crystal Palace from Everton?

As per Football Insider, Everton are ready to listen to offers for Gray this summer as Sean Dyche looks to raise funds to carry out his transfer business amid financial difficulty at Goodison Park.

Crystal Palace, Fulham and clubs from Saudi Arabia are keen to offer Gray a new challenge as he ticks into the final year of his deal at the Toffees; however, Everton do have the option to extend his £25k-a-week contract by a further 12 months.

The Daily Mail claim that the fee quoted for Gray to leave Everton will be around £12 million, representing a significant profit for the Merseyside giants compared to the £1.7 million price they acquired him for in 2021 from Bayer Leverkusen.

Former Leicester City winger Gray, who has been hailed as "unbelievable", would be open to leaving Everton due to becoming frustrated at his lack of first-team involvement at the club.

FootballTransfers report that Gray would turn down advances from Saudi Arabia in favour of moving to Crystal Palace and talks are continuing over a potential switch.

Jamaica international Gray is keen to stay in the United Kingdom, where his family is based, which is said to be a main motivator behind his desire to pitch up at Selhurst Park.

Last term, Gray made 36 appearances in all competitions for Everton, registering six goals and a solitary assist in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Daily Express journalist Taylor has confirmed that Gray and Flamengo star Matheus Franca are two names of 'strong interest' at Selhurst Park.

Taylor stated: “They are two names of strong interest. Demarai Gray is one that I expect to end up getting done. I know Fulham are also interested. There have been clubs from Saudi Arabia, including Al-Hilal, who are also interested.”

What now for Crystal Palace?

Crystal Palace have been a slow burner in the window, with only Jefferson Lerma joining the club on a free transfer from Bournemouth so far, as per Transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, The Telegraph's Mike McGrath has confirmed on Twitter X that the Eagles have looked at Ausburg midfielder Ruben Vargas and Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, stating: "Crystal Palace have been assessing midfielders during the window. They've looked at Ruben Vargas at FC Augsburg as a possible loan. Leeds' Crysencio Summerville is admired but would need to determine LUFC plans for him next season."

In a surprise turn of events, Crystal Palace are keen on a shock deal to acquire Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, who the Citizens would be willing to sell at a considerable loss, according to The Daily Star.

CBS Sports understand that Crystal Palace are admirers of Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun; however, Brighton & Hove Albion, West Ham United and Inter Milan are also in contention to land the United States international.

Looking ahead, Crystal Palace supporters will hope that some new arrivals will arrive in SE19 in the next few weeks to bolster their squad heading into the new Premier League campaign.
