England haunted by a broken Hart

Goalkeeping in modern English football should surely be the greatest gig in the world. Astronomical wages, your own personal one-on-one coach and no big ugly centre-forward legally able to dig you in the ribs, barge you into the back of the net and generally bully you about. Yet Fabio Capello still struggled to find three keepers to fill his England squad to face Switzerland in a Euro 2012 qualifier last Saturday.

With Ben Foster and Paul Robinson refusing to play for their country, Rob Green considering his own future and even the Fulham reserve goalkeeper David Stockdale pulling out of the England squad because he is getting married next week, Capello was struggling for manpower. He’ll need a job-lot of cotton wool at Manchester City next season because if Joe Hart gets injured, the options are severely limited.

And to think that Britain always used to rule the world in goalkeeping. I played with two of the genuine all-time world greats in Gordon Banks and Pat Jennings – and after my playing days, you could add Peter Shilton, Ray Clemence, David Seaman and Neville Southall in that category too. Now the cupboard is looking pretty bare and it is as if the changes in the interpretation of the laws have turned our keepers soft. They seem over-protected as a species and most of them are clearly too tired to turn up for international duty.

It was always said that you had to start worrying about your goalkeeper when you found him looking at himself in the mirror too much, because then he’d no longer be willing to dive at a forward’s feet. You could never accuse Jennings of that, even though he was a good-looking man. By approximately the width of a fag paper, Big Pat was the best keeper I ever played with – he was simply the complete package.

[divider]

As well as being a fine shot-stopper, he even scored in the Charity Shield once – I was the man his huge goal-kick flew over on its way into the net. And when it came to dealing with crosses, you didn’t want to mess with him. A huge man with hands the size of buckets, he would always charge out of goal with both fists flying, one for the ball and another to cuff an opponent around the ear.

The first great foreign keeper in English football was Manchester City’s Bert Trautmann, whose bravery was famously proved in the 1956 FA Cup Final when he played on despite the most horrific of injuries, in those days before subs. Apparently the physio treating Bert told him: “There’s good news and bad news – the bad news is you’ve broken your neck, the good news is there’s only 75 minutes left to play.” Goalkeeping is a very different game now, of course – modern balls swerve about, especially the old World Cup Jabulani – while the back-pass rule means modern keepers need to be able to kick with both feet as well as any defender.

That particular rule change would not have pleased our old Chelsea keeper Reg Matthews, a fine shot-stopper but a man who could barely kick beyond his own 18-yard box and was also a chain-smoking nervous wreck! But you simply don’t win major trophies without a great goalkeeper – the likes of Jennings, Banks, Seaman, Shilton, Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and Petr Cech. Name me an iffy keeper who has won the English title or the European Cup?

And as sorry as we felt for Rob Green when he slipped up against the USA at last summer’s World Cup, that sort of thing simply doesn’t seem to happen to the best keepers on the biggest occasions. So send a lorry load of the white fluffy stuff up to Eastlands, for the attention of young Mr Hart – because without him, we’re surely doomed

Charlton seek momentum to take them over the finish line

Well a week ago I stated this was a make or break week for Charlton, and Seven days later I sit here rather happy.

Charlton have picked up 4 crucial points after following a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe up with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Yeovil Town as they head in to a crunch top of the table clash with League 1 giants Huddersfield town this weekend.

Huddersfield go in to the game following a 2-0 victory over Chesterfield on Tuesday night and are back in with a shout of automatic promotion again.

It’s been a strange season for Huddersfield so far. They made a flying start along with Charlton, and back in November when the two sides met it was first v second in a tightly fought encounter. Charlton came out 2-0 winners thanks to Hogan Ephraim and Yann Kermorgant and in the process ending Huddersfield’s amazing and record breaking 43 unbeaten record.

But this meeting at the Galpharm sees Huddersfield managed by a different man since that night in November with Simon Grayson now the man at the helm and it’s fair to say it’s been a frustrating start to his time with the Terriers after he has already witnessed his side throw away a few leads including a 3-0 lead over Bury and a 2-0 advantage over Stevenage.

There is no doubting who Charlton will have to watch on Saturday afternoon,  his name is Jordan Rhodes and his quite simply unplayable at this moment in time. The prolific youngster bagged his 34th goal of the season on Tuesday night and although he didn’t cause Charlton’s backline too many problems in November, he is quite simply a player who can make something out of nothing. Not only is he doing it on the club scene but also at international this season bagging a hat-trick for the Scotland’s Under 21’s already this season.

What has tended to be Huddersfield downfall this season is their defence.  Although they have one of the most highly rated keepers in England right now in Alex Smithies it means little if your defence is leaking goals. As a result they will have to be at their best to stop the rampant Addicks from scoring a few.

Charlton must build on Tuesday’s superb win over in-form Yeovil to push themselves over that line. A week ago there were question marks over whether Charlton could see this title push through and, the response coming from the ecstatic Charlton fans on Tuesday after the final whistle would have made most neutrals think that Tuesday night guaranteed promotion.

It was great to see a huge number of fans jumping around with chants like “Championship here we come”, as this shows the belief is very much back with the fans, if it had ever gone away. Another 3 points over Huddersfield on Saturday would move Charlton on to 85 points and another huge step towards that inevitable title.

Mercurial talent who should top Sir Alex’s January wishlist

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is not easily impressed yet it seems Udinese star Alexis Sanchez has convinced the Scot of his Premier League credentials with some increasingly impressive performances over the last 12 months.

Ferguson confirmed this week that he is a keen admirer of the Chilean international and several recent Sunday newspaper reports  claimed United will table a big money offer for the flying winger in the January transfer window. The 68-year-old United boss uncharacteristically confirmed:

“We have looked at Sanchez and he has impressed us. As have other players.

“He has had very good games and is an interesting project.

“We have gathered some background, as with other footballers at his level, but nothing more than this – for the moment”

Sanchez started his playing career with Chilean side Cobreloa, where he impressed in his debut season and immediately snapped up by Italian side Udinese in 2006 for a bargain £2m. Sanchez was then loaned back to Colo-Colo and Argentinean side River Plate, where he continued to develop and dazzle in equal measure, with some outstanding displays. The Chilean had huge success during his respective loan spells, as an inspirational figure in winning league titles with both sides.

His parent club Udinese recalled the prestigious talent in the summer of 2008 and Sanchez immediately became a first-team regular at the Stadio Friuli. Sanchez has reportedly stated he is keen on a move to Old Trafford and has been touted as the long-term replacement for £80m man Cristiano Ronaldo.

The comparison is an obvious one, both have lightening quick speed, a deft first touch, amazing trickery and the ability to unlock defences. Real Madrid star Ronaldo however has a natural height and stature, something which helped him to combat the physical nature of the Premier League, an area in which Sanchez is somewhat lacking. However the 21-year old’s main quality is his ability in attack, something which he loves to do. He revealed:

“I’ve always liked playing that way; coming up with the unexpected. I love entertaining the fans.”

Known as ‘the boy wonder’, Sanchez has scored 11 goals in 32 appearances for his country and increased his reputation even further at the World Cup with some electric performances for Chile. Sanchez is one of the most wanted talents in Europe and United will have to pay big money in order to get their man. Understandably, Udinese are reluctant to sell their star player and rejected an offer from Roma earlier this year. European heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona are also reportedly keen on the mercurial talent.

Sanchez would slot right into the United set-up and would offer a more direct attacking threat to opposition defences than Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia, who will be sidelined until February with a fractured left ankle. While Ronaldo was signed as a fresh-faced 18-year-old with just 25 games as a professional under his belt, Sanchez has already made over 100 appearances and could make an immediate impact.

Ferguson rarely publically reveals his interest in a player and the fact he has chosen to do so with Sanchez speaks volumes. The diminutive winger would be a fantastic addition to the United squad and should be at the top of Fergie’s Christmas wish list.

Tevez deal set to collapse

Corinthians’ inability to make an immediate payment has stalled Carlos Tevez’s transfer from Manchester City. The clubs appeared to have come to an agreement for the transfer of the Argentine striker, reportedly for a fee in the region of 40 million pounds.

But City’s request that Corinthians make their first payment before the transfer is completed, rather than in early 2012 as proposed by the Brazilian Serie A side, appears to be a deal-breaker.

Corinthians’ director of football, Duilio Monteiro Alves, confirmed the negotiations have stalled, saying: “I’m pessimistic. City want us to start the payments now, and we cannot do that.”

The transfer window in Brazil closes on Wednesday, meaning a resolution will need to be made swiftly if the deal is to go ahead.

However, Tevez’s attorney Adrian Ruocco did not seem confident a deal would be done in time.

“Regrettably, judging from the pace of negotiations right now, it is improbable that we will come to any agreement with Corinthians,” Ruocco told Lancenet.

“The only thing that stands in the way of a deal is this matter about the first instalment. But we will wait until Wednesday, that is the only thing we can do.”

One suggested solution is that Corinthians provide bank guarantees in order for a new payment structure to be worked out.

City boss Roberto Mancini will be hoping to resolve the matter quickly as the club prepares to put in a bid for unsettled Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero.

One hundred fans arrested as rival fans clash

Poland and Russia played out a 1-1 draw in Group A on Tuesday night, but the game was slightly overshadowed by serious disturbances in the lead up to kick-off.

In-form Russian attacker Alan Dzagoev opened the scoring for Dick Advocaat’s men, but a sensational Jakub Blaszczykowski equaliser saw the spoils shared.

However, clashes between rival fans in the build up to the game drew attention away from an intense game, as a number of separate incidents led to 100 arrests.

Ten people were injured in the violent clashes, with seven Poles, two Russians and a German taken to hospital, but none of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

Violence has been apparent in the tournament to date, and along with racist incidents have marred an exciting competition so far.

A Warsaw spokesperson has admitted that local police were investigating the circumstances of last night’s disruption.

“We are still monitoring the situation and trying to identify the supporters involved. The operation is not over from our side as we continue in our attempts to catch those who are causing trouble,” a statement reads.

Meanwhile, in the other Group B game Czech Republic beat Greece 2-1 to salvage their campaign.

Two goals in the opening six minutes from Vaclav Pilar and Petr Jiracek put the Czechs into a dominant position, and although Theofanis Gekas pulled one back for the Greeks, the three points went to Michal Bilek’s men.

Bilek was happy with the nature of the team’s win but bemoaned the loss of Tomas Rosicky to injury.

“The changes (to the starting line-up) proved useful, we played a great first half, controlled the game, we soon scored twice, the first half was great,” Bilek told Sky Sports.

“Tomas Rosicky picked up an injury and we missed his creative skills, we found it hard to create, we conceded a terribly stupid goal and then got under pressure.

“While its hard to tell the exact nature of it (Rosicky’s injury) at the moment it’s unpleasant, we have to hope he’ll be all right.”

“We missed him in the second half as he is a key player for us in attack as he can add tempo our game.”

Arguably the Top TEN Premier League summer transfers

With megabucks Manchester City lavishing millions on new players over summer it was left to the rest of the clubs in the Premier League to bring some much-needed stability and sanity to the transfer market. Below Football FanCast runs through the top ten deals of the transfer window, taking into account a player’s price, ability and potential in these recessionary times.

10. David Silva, Man City

Despite the hefty price tag at £24m, the highly-talented David Silva can transform Manchester City from Europa League competitors to Premier League contenders this season. The support striker has the creativity and flair to unlock those mean, stubborn defences and the Spaniard has his best years ahead of him at the age of 24.

After four successful years in the Valencia first-team, clocking up over 100 appearances, Silva finally made his move to England this summer after previously being courted by the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. Silva also has 39 caps for Spain and looks set to make a big impact this season.

9. Hatem Ben Arfa, Newcastle (loan)

As a product of France’s highly regarded Clairefontaine academy, which has produced the likes of Louis Saha, William Gallas and Thierry Henry; Hatem Ben Arfa is considered to be one of the hottest talents in French football today.

Newcastle secured the 23-year-old winger on a season-long loan from Marseille after Ben Arfa went on strike in a desperate bid to leave the Stade Velodrome following a series of fall-outs. Ben Arfa is a mercurial talent and if manager Chris Houghton can help him overcome his disciplinary problems then The Magpies could reap the benefits this season.

8. Marouane Chamakh, Arsenal

Landing fast and powerful Moroccan forward Marouane Chamakh on a free transfer from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux was an astute piece of business by Frenchman Arsene Wenger this summer.

The 26-year-old scored 56 goals in 230 appearances for FCGB, helping the club win their first league title in ten years in 2009. Wenger said at the time:

“I know he will provide our squad with great quality.”

7. Stephen Ireland, Aston Villa

Aston Villa received £16m, as well as Man City’s 2008/09 Player of the Year Stephen Ireland, in exchange for England international James Milner and The Villa certainly got a good deal. Ireland has a point to prove after being frozen out by Roberto Mancini at Eastlands and will be raring to go this season.

The passionate midfielder will add extra bite to the Villa midfield and at 23 will look to improve his all-round game at the Midlands club.

6. Asamoah Gyan, Sunderland

Sunderland sprang one of the biggest surprises on deadline day by breaking their transfer record to capture the signature of World Cup star Asamoah Gyan. The 24-year-old lit up the tournament with some eye-catching displays for Ghana’s Black Stars on their spectacular run to the quarter-finals.

Gyan’s World Cup performances has clearly pushed up the player’s transfer fee and at £13m represents a slight risk for Black Cats boss Steve Bruce. However if Gyan can recapture the form he showed over the summer than Sunderland fans are in for a real treat.

5. Eidur Gudjohnsen, Stoke

Stoke secured the improbable signature of experienced Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan from Monaco as part of a triple transfer treat for Potters fans on deadline day.

The 31-year-old clinical forward spent the second-half of last season on loan at Tottenham where he made a handful of appearances for Harry Redknapp’s Champions League chasing side. Gudjohnsen has plenty of experience having played for Barcelona, Chelsea and Bolton and represents a real coup for Tony Pulis as the club look to improve on last season’s 11th placed finish.

4. Alexander Hleb, Birmingham (loan)

Birmingham managed to pull off a deadline day coup by securing former Arsenal star Alexander Hleb on a season-long loan from reigning Spanish champions Barcelona. The attacking midfielder moved to Catalonia in 2008 for £11.8m but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular under Pep Guardiola.

Having spent last season on loan at his former club Stuttgart, Hleb was keen on a return to the Premier League. The 29-year-old was a massive hit with The Gunners and is sure to have Blues fans on the edge of their seat this season.

3. Joe Cole, Liverpool

Joe Cole arrived as Roy Hodgson’s first summer signing at Liverpool on a free transfer. After failing to win a new contract with champions Chelsea, Cole will be determined to prove his worth at Anfield this season.

Cole has bags of ability and has been welcomed with open arms on Merseyside. Liverpool could be the right club for Cole to re-establish himself as an England regular under the guidance of Hodgson this season.

2. Javier Hernandez, Manchester United

Mexican livewire Javier Hernandez is a fantastic prospect after impressing at the World Cup and in pre-season for United this summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the club saved over £10m by signing him before he hit the headlines with his excellent performances at the World Cup and ‘Chicharito’ has wasted no time in establishing himself at Old Trafford. Signed for around £10m from Mexican side Guadalajara, Hernandez looks to be another impressive signing by Sir Alex.

1. Rafael van der Vaart, Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs pulled off the shock of the transfer window by landing Dutch maestro Rafael van der Vaart for £8m, with just two hours left of the transfer window. Reportedly heading to Bayern Munich for £18m the day before, manager Harry Redknapp rushed through a cut-price deal after his proposed move to Germany collapsed.

The 27-year-old Holland international helped his country reach the World Cup final this summer but was deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu. Transfer deadline day certainly isn’t over until Harry Redknapp says it is.

Premier League: Aston Villa 1 Stoke 1

Aston Villa and Stoke City both edged closer to Premier League survival with a point each on Saturday. It was a classic game of two halves, with Stoke dominating early on and Villa eventually playing their way back into the match.

Darren Bent cancelled out Kenwyne Jones’ opener just before half-time and the home side perhaps deserved the win on the balance of play in the second half.

The visitors had all the early pressure, forcing a succession of corners, with only superb goalkeeping by Brad Friedel preventing them from taking a lead.

First Robert Huth picked up a loose ball after a trademark Rory Delap throw was only half cleared, but Friedel was alert to parry away the defender’s volley.

Then, from the resulting Matty Etherington corner, Jones’ goal-bound header was superbly clawed away by Friedel.

But the pressure finally paid off in the 20th minute when Stoke took the lead in familiar fashion with Jones rising highest to head home Delap’s long throw.

Villa struggled to cope with Stoke’s physical presence and it took half an hour for them to get into the game, even then only producing half chances for Luke Young who shot wide and Emile Heskey who headed over.

And when Bent did get into a scoring position, a last-ditch tackle from Ryan Shawcross denied him.

However, Bent grabbed the equaliser two minutes from half time, glancing a header from a Kyle Walker cross off the post and into the net.

The home side upped their game at the start of the second half. Stewart Downing had goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scrambling after his drive cannoned off Huth and out for a corner.

Then Heskey steered a low cross from Nigel Reo-Coker wide, before two substitutes combined, Gabby Agbonlahor heading Marc Albrighton’s cross into the ground and the arms of Begovic.

Stoke substitute Ricardo Fuller did have the ball in the net late on, but the striker was ruled offside as Jones passed to him.

And it was to get worse for Fuller as he was carried off on a stretcher forcing his side to play added time with only 10 men.

Premier League’s Most Wanted: Loic Remy

Interest in Nice striker Loic Remy is certainly heating up this summer with Arsenal and West Ham currently believed to be doing battle over his signature along with a number of European clubs.

Remy came to prominence in France last year after his exploits with Nice and was rewarded by receiving his debut for the national team in June, despite not making their World Cup squad and he is definitely a player for the future and has been likened to Thierry Henry, his blistering pace and technical ability is very reminiscent of the former Arsenal star and based on what he has shown so far he could have as a big a career in the game as Henry. He looks like a player that could come in and play well right from the off and as both Arsenal and West Ham are lacking quality attacking options, he would be of tremendous benefit to both sides.

The 23-year-old started his career with French giants Lyon but after finding it too difficult to break into the team, making just 12 league appearances in three years during this time he headed out to Lens on loan where he enjoyed a fairly productive loan spell. Nice then agreed to pay Lyon €8m for his services in 2008, making him Nice’s most expensive ever player, he had a decent first season at the club before he went on to further his reputation last season. Despite not scoring loads of goals, its been his movement and technique that have caught the eye with many believing that he can go on to become a deadly striker in the coming years.

Now a whole host of clubs outside of France want to sign the youngster and along with Arsenal and West Ham, Sevilla, AC Milan and Fiorentina are all believed to have been taking an interest in him. He has interest in his home land from the three biggest clubs as Marseille, his former club Lyon and Bordeaux are all said to be keen. However Bordeaux have declared themselves out of the race to sign him with their chairman Jean-Louis Triaud saying:

“They (Nice) refused to accept €13.5m from West Ham, I do not see how we could make a proposal that pleases them.”

It is strange to hear of a chairman from another club commenting on the Hammers transfer dealings, however if the fee that has been mentioned is true then it’s clear that West Ham are prepared to spend big this summer to get themselves a top striker. It will be interesting to see if Arsenal now come in with a bid for the player who has declared that he will be leaving his future in the hands of his club. Remy has said:

“I am returning back to training this week, I am still a Nice player. If they decide to sell me I will listen to offers and see what we can do, but I am relaxed and if nothing happens I will be happy to stay here.”

Based on what he has shown already, wherever he ends up he is going to be a valuable asset for that side. Remy already looks the part and could go on to be a great striker.

Dave Jones remains committed to Cardiff

Dave Jones, who has been linked with the managerial vacancy at Fulham, insists he is committed to Cardiff City.

The Cottagers are continuing to seek a successor for Roy Hodgson, who left Fulham to take up the managerial post at Liverpool almost four weeks ago.

They had been keen to appoint Martin Jol, but he has decided to remain at Ajax, while Jones continues to be one of the favourites to take the Craven Cottage post.

However, Jones said:"I'm fully committed here, I'm fully behind this football club. I can assure our fans that I am – as always – 100 per cent working at this football club to try and get things right, as I have done every season and during the season.

"It's nice to have things written about you, of course. I'm not going to lie and say that it isn't. But this football club for the last five years has got everything I've got, my family and me.

"You never say never in football because you don't know what's round the corner.

Torres delighted with Chelsea switch

New Chelsea signing Fernando Torres says he is delighted with his move to Stamford Bridge and is eyeing a long career at the London club.

The former Liverpool striker signed a five-and-half-year deal reportedly worth 50 million pounds as Chelsea look to bolster their striking stocks ahead of the knockout stages of the Champions League and the conclusion of the English Premier League campaign.

The 26-year-old said he is looking forward to making an immediate impression at his new club, who face off against Liverpool in the league at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

“I am very happy with my transfer to Chelsea and I am looking forward very much to helping my new team-mates this season and for many years to come,” he told the Chelsea website.

“Having played against Chelsea many times since coming to England, and in some very big games I will never forget, I know there are many great players here and I will work hard to win a place in the team. I hope I can score some important goals for the supporters to enjoy this season.”

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck hailed the signing of one of the world’s best players as a major coup for his club.

“This is a very significant day for Chelsea, capturing one of the best players in the world with his peak years ahead of him,” Buck said.

“We have long admired the talents of a player who is a proven goalscorer in English football and Fernando’s arrival is a sign of our continuing high ambitious. I hope every Chelsea fan is as excited as I am with this news.”

Torres, who joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007, scored 81 goals in 142 total appearances for the Reds including both goals when the Reds defeated Chelsea at Anfield in November.
