New Zealand are hoping Jesse Ryder’s improved fitness translates into big runs as they battle to stay in contention for the World Twenty20 semi-finals. Ryder missed most of the season with a stomach problem but has returned to the side for this tournament and is chipping in with useful displays at the top of the order.Ryder has scores of 42, 2 and 33 in the first three matches and will need to keep delivering if New Zealand are to overcome Pakistan in Barbados on Saturday. The loser of the fixture will almost certainly be out of the race for the semi-finals while the winner should also need to succeed in their final Super Eight match to guarantee a top-four place.”If we play to our potential I think we can do it,” Ryder said. “We’ve got the team to do it.”Ryder is pleased with his fitness after the long lay-off and his only complaint is some stiffness in his legs. “I think my form is going pretty well, I’m striking the ball well,” he said. “It’s just a matter of getting in and going from there.”The coach Mark Greatbatch wants a couple of his men to star and Ryder, who opens with Brendon McCullum, is an obvious candidate for a large impact. New Zealand’s players have been contributing but none has scored a half-century and only Nathan McCullum has taken three wickets in an innings.”You need one or two guys to really step up,” Greatbatch said. “That means a match-winning performance with the ball and a match-winning performance with the bat. It normally comes down to one or two guys.”New Zealand lost their opening Super Eight game to South Africa in Barbados on Thursday and need a quick turnaround. “We’ve got to regroup and scout Pakistan,” Greatbatch said, “it’s a big game coming up for us.”

Liverpool keen on signing Matheus Cunha

Liverpool have made an ‘official proposal’ to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha in January, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Cunha not a key man

The 22-year-old made the move to the La Liga champions last summer after joining from Hertha Berlin, but he has struggled to be a key man under Diego Simeone.

Cunha has been limited to just three starts in La Liga, coming on as a substitute on 14 occasions, while also failing to start a single Champions League match, racking up only 573 minutes across the two major competitions.

Thus, it makes sense that the Brazilian could look for a move elsewhere, and Liverpool have now emerged as possible suitors.

The Latest: Liverpool make ‘official proposal’

According to AS [via Sport Witness], the Reds want to snap him up before the January transfer window closes on Monday night, despite Luis Diaz looking likely to join over the weekend (BBC).

Liverpool are believed to have shown a ‘strong interest’ in Cunha and Jurgen Klopp sees him as a ‘good reinforcement’ for his squad.

To this point, however, Atletico have refused the interest.

The Verdict: January move feels unlikely

While Cunha is a talented player who could thrive at Anfield, possessing end product, work rate and strength – he enjoyed 23 goal involvements in 40 appearances for Hertha with 13 goals and ten assists – it would be a surprise to see him join in January.

Assuming Diaz makes the move to Liverpool, Klopp will already have five top-quality attacking options at his disposal, not to mention Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi and Kaide Gordon all on the fringes, too.

A summer move for Cunha would feel more likely, especially if one of Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino were to leave as they enter the final 18 months of their current deals.

While Cunha is apparently a player Klopp rates highly due to his ‘strength and quality’ (Sport Witness), this one feels like a move to keep on the back burner for now.

In other news, Liverpool are also hopeful of signing another player this month. Find out who it is here.

Allround Smith puts Lancashire ahead

Yorkshire recovered somewhat from 55 for 5 but at 199 for 8 still trail by 217 runs, needing 68 more to avoid the follow-on

Having cursed the weather when day one of the 250th Roses match was lost to rain, Yorkshire may be less than disappointed if the final day brings more of the same after a dry but otherwise miserable third day for the home side left Lancashire firmly in control.Yorkshire recovered somewhat from 55 for 5 but at 199 for 8 still trail by 217 runs, needing 68 more to avoid the follow-on. Their imperilled position owes much to the Lancashire allrounder, Tom Smith, who scored a career-best 108 not out, then took four wickets as he continued a habit of saving his best for Roses matches. The 24-year-old from Liverpool returned career-best bowling figures of 6 for 46 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 181 when the rivals met at Old Trafford last July, going on to share a 107-run opening partnership with Paul Horton, setting Lancashire up for a mammoth total. Those six wickets doubled his tally for the season and there were parallels of a kind on this occasion, the first Championship century of his career coming after a woeful run of scores with the bat. In eight innings before this one, he had accumulated only 31 runs in total, yet put all of that behind him in a chanceless performance, spiced by some lovely strokes on both sides of the wicket, eclipsing the 104 he made against Durham University last season as his best first-class score. Some days, clearly, everything works in harmony and the confidence drawn from one part of his game falling into place spills over into the other discipline. This was one such day. Introduced at first change in a four-man seam attack, his first eight-over spell included a run of three wickets for four runs in 37 balls as sorry Yorkshire’s reply to Lancashire’s 419 for 9 declared crumbled to 55 for 5.The Lancashire charge was halted for a while as Adil Rashid tried to organise a salvage operation. The leg-spinning allrounder had Jonathan Bairstow for company in a stand of 74 in 19 overs but their partnership ended when the young wicketkeeper paid the price for inexperience and a touch of impetuosity. Having hit left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan for six over long-on, he tried to despatch the next delivery in the same way but did not get it quite right and with the irrepressible Smith running around from long-off there was only going to be one outcome, even if the ball did momentarily bounce out of his grasp before he completed the catch.Rashid, having hit seven fours in reaching 51 off 85 balls, picked up a couple more but then Smith began his second spell and pinned him leg before for 65. The last wicket before the close was a give-away, Tino Best blasting the ball straight to Kyle Hogg at mid-off to give Kerrigan a second success.Smith, 46 overnight, must by now have convinced Lancashire that he is not the right man to open the batting, a role he was given last season as Lancashire sought a way to find the desired balance of batters and bowlers, and has struggled with again this year. Back in more comfortable territory at six, he succeeded where his top-order team-mates had failed in turning a solid start into a substantial score.Lancashire’s day did not begin too well, Luke Sutton lasting just three balls before Glen Chapple was dropped on the boundary, having scored only a single. But Smith’s first boundary of the day, driven firmly through the off side from a short ball by Ajmal Shahzad, took him to a half-century off 90 balls and it was with an authoritative pull to the ropes from a Joe Sayers full toss that he moved into three figures from 158 deliveries, with 10 fours.Lancashire added 144 in the morning session, although not quickly enough to gain more than one extra batting point. They were thwarted in that ambition when Chapple, drawn down the track by Rashid, was stumped just when he seemed to be finding his range. After a lunchtime declaration, it was Chapple who drew first blood with the ball for Lancashire, ending Adam Lyth’s hopes of becoming only the third batsman since the War to score 1,000 first-class runs by the end of May. The left-hander has made brisk starts his trademark this season but when he set himself to drive Chapple’s second ball through the covers he succeeded only in directing it on to his stumps via an inside edge.Chapple landed another serious blow in his second over, nipping one back to have Anthony McGrath leg before, seeing off another batsman who has been in sparkling form. Saj Mahmood had half a dozen overs without success at the Kirkstall Lane end, but when he gave way to Smith, Yorkshire lurched back into trouble, rapidly sliding from 40 for 2 to 55 for 3. Smith trapped Sayers in front with his third ball, then had Andrew Gale edging to second slip and Jacques Rudolph caught behind, the South African nibbling at an excellent ball that left him late.Shahzad battled well in the final half hour and resumes on 38 not out but it would be a surprise if Yorkshire are not batting for a second time within the first hour of the last morning, unless of course the weather has had another say.

As declarações sinalizaram situações distintas.

Rangers: Roofe let Gvb down badly

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst tasted defeat for the first time in charge of the Ibrox giants on Wednesday night.

The Gers were hammered 3-0 by rivals Celtic at Parkhead to lose their place at the top of the Premiership table, moving one point behind the Hoops.

Reo Hatate scored two goals from outside the box in the first half to put the home side into a two-goal lead, with Allan McGregor caught off guard by both efforts as they crept into the bottom corner.

Liel Abada then completed the opening 45-minute rout as he snuck in ahead of a sleeping Borna Barisic to prod the ball in from close range, with the Gers unable to pull one back

Forget Barisic

The Croatian left-back had five yards on Abada when the cross came in and failed to switch on as the winger sprinted past him to finish unmarked in the six-yard box. He was then substituted, along with Glen Kamara and Amad Diallo, at half-time as he struggled throughout the entire first half.

Forget Barisic, though, as a player who must have started his last Premiership game under van Bronckhorst this season is centre-forward Kemar Roofe.

Offensively, the Gers nightmare was virtually invisible. As per SofaScore, he failed to register a single shot, on or off target, in the entire match. He was also unsuccessful with his one attempt at dribbling past an opponent and had 35 touches of the ball, fewer than goalkeeper Allan McGregor despite playing the full 90 minutes.

Off the ball, he was a lightweight. As per SofaScore, he lost 70% of his duels (7/10) and completed two tackles, whilst being dribbled past once. This shows that he was far from good enough in his individual battles as he was unable to provide Rangers with the focal point they needed to alleviate pressure when clearing the ball from Celtic’s high press early on.

He has scored six goals in the Premiership this season and only two of them have come from him being in the starting line-up, both of which came from the penalty spot. This means that he has failed to score from open play in his seven starts this term, whilst scoring four in nine appearances off the bench.

Roofe has been far more effective coming on as a substitute and this latest poor performance against the Hoops must have told van Bronckhorst that he should use him exclusively from the bench. With Alfredo Morelos due to return from international duty, the Dutchman will have an alternative option to Cedric Itten to start in place of him – with Roofe then being an impact substitute.

Put it simply; he mustn’t start again this term if the Gers have any desires of winning the Premiership in a few months time.

Celtic: Kieran Devlin addresses deadline day plans

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has shared the club’s deadline day plans on The Athletic, revealing the Hoops are still on the lookout for a ‘big opportunity’.

The Lowdown: Busy month

The Bhoys have already brought in five players in 2022, adding to the 12 they signed in the summer.

Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda and Matt O’Riley have gone on to make their Celtic debuts, whereas young forward Johnny Kenny appears to be a signing for the future.

Although it seems as if the club’s business could be finished, it appears as if Michael Nicholson and co are still open to making a move in the final hours of the window.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin took to The Athletic on Monday morning to provide an update on possible incomings and outgoings at Parkhead.

He revealed ‘what’s being briefed’ is that the incoming side of things is ‘done unless a big opportunity presents itself’.

Devlin then added that Osaze Urhoghide is off to Oostende on loan, whereas Albian Ajeti could be heading back to join Basel. However, that deal is in no rush to be completed with the Swiss market open for a further two weeks.

The Verdict: Interesting…

Although it will need a ‘big’ opportunity to come to light over the coming hours, it’s good to see that Celtic are still willing to make a sixth and final signing this month.

Hopefully the club can move a number of fringe players on, and it’ll be interesting to know where the club would be looking to strengthen if one big chance jumps up.

Should Adam Montgomery leave on loan and Boli Bolingoli depart, perhaps another left-back could be of interest to rival what would be the remaining senior left-back Greg Taylor.

It will be a case of wait and see today, but at least the Hoops haven’t completely ruled out making an 11th-hour addition.

PCB seek government advice on Howard

The PCB will seek the advice of the Pakistan government before deciding whether or not to support John Howard’s bid for the vice-presidency of the ICC

The Pakistan government will advise the PCB on the John Howard issue•AFP

The PCB will seek the advice of the Pakistan government before deciding whether or not to support John Howard’s bid for the vice-presidency of the ICC, a stance senior officials say indicates the seriousness and sensitivity of the issue.Howard, the former Australian prime minister, was nominated by Australia and New Zealand as their candidate for the vice-president’s post which will eventually see him take over from Sharad Pawar as ICC president in 2012. But his nomination has run into stiff opposition from a number of boards within the ICC. Four votes are needed to block the nomination and currently, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are determined to block it. Pawar, who will take over as president in June, backed the process that threw up Howard as a candidate rather than the candidate himself in an ICC statement earlier.Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, considers Howard a personal friend and is aware of his love for the game. But he has refused to make the voting intentions of his board public, telling Cricinfo only that “the issue is a very sensitive one and it has to be handled delicately.” Cricinfo understands, however, that the board has sought the advice of the government on the matter and contacted the office of the President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also patron of the board. Effectively, the board will go by the advice they receive.Senior board officials remain reluctant to talk about the issue, publicly or privately, but they stress repeatedly that the decision is one serious enough to warrant state advice. “Things on this issue are not as simple as they look,” one official told Cricinfo. “What appears on the surface is not what you will see below. That is all I can say currently on the matter.”Another official firmed up the stance. “This is a very big issue and we cannot just decide on it ourselves. It is a complicated matter involving many different aspects so we have to seek direction.”There is little clarity on why the matter should be referred to the government. Diplomatic ties between Australia and Pakistan have traditionally been straightforward, cordial and friendly. Howard last visited Pakistan in 2005, touring northern areas devastated by an earthquake and bowling an embarrassing series of half-trackers at a camp. Howard did rile much of Sri Lanka by calling Muttiah Muralitharan a chucker twice. Murali later forgave him but said on his nomination that Howard would face a tough challenge in trying “to convince the subcontinent.”Another member board has said that they will discuss the issue with other boards before making any decision. A senior official of the Bangladesh board told Cricinfo that the issue of Howard’s candidature had not as yet been discussed at boardroom level. But he added that in light of the increasing resistance to his nomination, the matter was likely to be addressed in consultation with other member nations.
