Kent dig in as another draw looms

Kent edged towards safety in their Division Two match with Northamptonshire on a rain-hit at Canterbury. Crucially, they managed to inch past the follow-on figure of 269 to keep themselves on course for their fifth draw in six.

ScorecardKent edged towards safety in their Division Two match with Northamptonshire at Canterbury as they closed a rain-affected third day on 280 for 6. Crucially, they managed to inch past the follow-on figure of 269 to keep themselves on course for their fifth draw in six. With the floodlights on and the square swathed in sheets and pitch covers, match umpires Nigel Cowley and Nick Cook had no choice but to call proceedings off at 6pm, with Kent still 138 behind their opponents’ first-inning total of 418. It was all a familiar tale for Northamptonshire, who have already lost a total of 656 overs to inclement weather so far this season.Having resumed on 123 for 3, Kent lost overseas all-rounder Brendan Nash in the fourth over to only the seventh ball of the day from England Lions’ seamer Jack Brooks. Fooled by a slower off-cutter, Nash mistimed an on-drive into the hands of Stephen Peters at mid-wicket to go for 11 and make it 130 for 4.That brought Michael Powell and Darren Stevens together for a vital fifth-wicket stand that put Kent in a position to save the game. Both right-handers are renowned for their counter-attacking style but they soon realised they needed to curb their natural aggression and grind out precious runs.As a result, Powell got his first half-century for Kent at Canterbury from 119 balls, while Stevens, a Twenty20 star in the Bangladesh Premier League during the close season, limped to the same milestone from the same number of balls and with only seven fours.Their backs-to-the-wall effort finally ended when Powell, in attempting to work across the line against Lee Daggett, went lbw for 61, scored in a shade more than three hours. Stevens followed soon after for an equally stoical 57 when he nicked an attempted push drive against Andrew Hall into the gloves of wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien.Brothers-in-law James Tredwell and Geraint Jones also dug in for a further 16 overs before the rain arrived to wash out play for the day. Jones posted an unbeaten 26 from 58 balls with four flashing drives to the boundary, while Tredwell kept him company with a gritty unbeaten 11 scored in just over an hour.

Carberry knock sets up Hants win

Hampshire thrashed Scotland by 89 runs in their Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Bothwell Castle, rolling their opponents for a modest 131.

20-May-2012
ScorecardHampshire thrashed Scotland by 89 runs in their Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Bothwell Castle, rolling their opponents for a modest 131.Michael Carberry top-scored with 76 as Hampshire finished on 220 all out with two balls of their innings remaining but Scotland could not mount a credible challenge – Jean Symes’ 33 their best score as all six Hampshire bowlers took wickets.Kabir Ali, with 2 for 17 in six overs, and Danny Briggs – who returned 2 for 31 in eight – were the pick of the bowlers, while Majid Haq took three wickets for Scotland.Josh Davey was first man out for 13, bowled by Ali, before his opening partner Calum MacLeod was run out with the total at 28. Ali removed Ryan Flannigan lbw for duck and the dangerous Richie Berrington managed only nine before David Griffiths struck. That left the score at 58 for 4 but Symes and Preston Mommsen (22) dug in to extend the total to 94 before Symes – who batted for 48 deliveries and hit four boundaries – handed Chris Wood a wicket. Carberry’s part-time spin accounted for Haq and Liam Dawson ended Mommsen’s stay as the innings crumbled. Another run out and two tail-end scalps for Briggs ended the disappointing chase with seven overs remaining. The visitors made a swift start to their innings and were 66 for 1 in the ninth over when Jimmy Adams was caught behind by Craig Wallace off Gordon Drummond. James Vince joined Carberry in the middle and attempted to continue the rapid pace of the scoring and made good progress before being bowled by Haq.Simon Katich (six) was trapped lbw by Haq after facing just eight balls and Sean Ervine faced just a solitary delivery and was bowled with the next ball. Carberry could only watch on from the non-striker’s end but some stability was restored when Dawson joined him in the middle. Dawson kept the scoring going, but fell for 16 when he was caught by Drummond off the bowling of Mommsen.Carberry was running out of partners when Wood (4) and Michael Bates (2) fell in successive Davey overs and Carberry finally perished himself in the 33rd over following an innings which featured 10 boundaries. Ali (32) and Briggs (17) attempted to steer the visitors to a respectable total but both fell to Symes in the final over.

India-Pakistan series still up in the air

The resumption of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan remains in the balance after inconclusive discussions between the heads of the two boards in Kuala Lumpur

The resumption of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan remains in the balance after inconclusive discussions between the heads of the two boards in Kuala Lumpur. The BCCI president N Srinivasan and the PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf met on the sidelines of the ICC annual conference and agreed on a series in principle, but not on any specific details.”We’d already agreed [in May] to playing each other, which he [Srinivasan] reconfirmed,” Ashraf told ESPNcricinfo. “We will play, that’s for sure, but dates and revenue matters are yet to be finalised.”Ashraf said Pakistan were ready for progress on the series but Srinivasan had said he would only be able to commit after checking with Indian authorities. It is Pakistan’s turn to host a bilateral series, though Ashraf said the BCCI had the prerogative to decide on the dates. It’s understood the BCCI is not keen to play at a neutral venue, and Pakistan are ready to play in India. However, the PCB would want the BCCI to share revenue because it has apparently not yet recovered from the loss suffered when India pulled out their planned tour in 2009.The PCB is currently facing a shortfall of approximately $75 million in its annual budget and is looking at the India series to make up the deficit.Pakistan and India have not played each other in a bilateral series since December 2007, and ties have been frozen since the 2008 Mumbai terrorist strike. Pakistan did, however, travel to India to play the semi-final of the 2011 World Cup.Talks of reviving Pakistan-India cricketing ties began when Ashraf requested Pakistan President Asif Zardari to take up the issue with the Indian government. A meeting between the head of states in Delhi in April indicated that the Indian government had no objections to the resumption of cricket between the two countries. Last month, Ashraf visited India for the IPL final and it emerged that one window for the series could be during the gap in England’s split tour to India at the end of the year.

Khan tears through Middlesex

Amjad Khan took season’s best figures as Sussex skittled Middlesex to give a further boost to their outside chance for the title

Perhaps they’ve left their charge up the table just a little too late. But in the space of five-and-a-bit matches, Sussex have transformed themselves from relegation worriers into title dreamers. The ten-wicket loss to Middlesex at Lord’s in early June had the champions of 2003, ’06 and ’07 looking anxiously over their shoulders towards the drop zone. Since then, though, they have beaten Surrey, Durham and Worcestershire, drawn with long-time top two Warwickshire and Notts and are now fancied to take over second place by claiming another victory here.Steve Magoffin, James Anyon and Monty Panesar have been the mainstays of their attack for most of this campaign. Today, though, it was Amjad Khan who ripped through Middlesex’s middle order on his way to season’s best figures of 5 for 25 from 14 overs.Khan, who played his only Test in 2009, has fallen a long way down the pecking order when it comes to England fast bowling candidates and throughout the middle part of this campaign he was not able to force his way into Sussex’s four-day side. On Friday, though, the 31-year-old proved almost unstoppable on an evenly grassed pitch which, thanks to some cracking, produced variable bounce. In the space of eight balls, he removed Dawid Malan, Sam Robson and Neil Dexter to leave Middlesex in serious difficulty at 62 for 5.Unlike Sussex’s catching, which was splendid for the most part, some of the opposition batting left a fair bit to be desired. But Khan deserved bags of credit for hitting the right spot, more often than not, and making the opposition play.He completed his first five-for since starting the season, when he claimed a handful against Surrey, by locating the outside edge twice more, thereby removing Ollie Rayner and Gareth Berg. At that stage, all eight Middlesex wickets had fallen to catches behind the wicket – from keeper through to gully – and a perfect ten seemed probable, rather than possible.Instead, Panesar ended the neatness by winning a leg-before decision against Toby Roland-Jones and, thereafter, Middlesex were grateful to a bright and breezy 34 from No. 10 Tim Murtagh to take them past 150. His knock included one particularly pleasing sweep against Panesar, which sent the ball soaring for six. When Sussex’s top order batsmen found life only a little easier against the new ball it looked as though Murtagh’s innings might be the day’s top score. But Ed Joyce was not quite finished when it came to making life difficult for his former employers. The ex-Middlesex batsman has only recently taken over the Championship captaincy at Sussex. He began his reign by leading the county to an innings victory against Worcestershire last week and here, having taken a punt by inserting the opposition, he underpinned the bowlers’ good work with a diligent, unbeaten innings of 49.The Irishman needed 116 balls to make one short of 50 but that mattered not a jot. Having flashed an early drive through a startled slip cordon, he put his nose to the grindstone while losing the company of Chris Nash, Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin. At 64 for 3, Sussex needed a partnership. They were given one by Joyce and Mike Yardy, the man who handed over the captaincy in order to concentrate on his own game, and the pair will hope to add significantly to a 42-run alliance on Saturday.
