Japen Patel leads defence of Robin Singh

USA allrounder Japen Patel has countered the criticism levelled by multiple team-mates against coach Robin Singh, saying that Singh has been “the best thing to happen to US cricket”

Peter Della Penna12-Nov-2014USA allrounder Japen Patel has countered the criticism levelled by multiple team-mates against coach Robin Singh, saying that Singh has been “the best thing to happen to US cricket” and his involvement is vital to the continued improvement of the national team.”There are bits and pieces that the US team does really well because of Robin,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo on Monday. “I just think that whatever good Robin does is overshadowed by USACA and the stuff they do wrong. Players like me and Adil Bhatti improved our games tournament by tournament because of him and because he believed in us. He saw what we had to offer and gave us plans to follow. If he wasn’t there then we wouldn’t be able to progress ourselves as quickly.”Patel was the first of four players who took to social media on Monday to give their support to Singh. Patel and Fahad Babar, who was USA’s leading scorer at WCL Division Three, gave strong statements in favour of the coach. Barrington Bartley also sought to distance himself from comments made by former USA captain Orlando Baker, with Bartley telling ESPNcricinfo that he “never have a problem with USACA management”, which contradicts Baker’s claim that players like Bartley and Timroy Allen would not stand for “disrespect” from Singh.Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Danial Ahmed went a step further than Patel and Babar, accusing team-mates of lying about events that took place on last year’s tour of the UAE and claimed that “the dressing room environment is perfect when Robin is around. The problem starts when certain individuals think they are bigger than the game itself and have a wrong attitude.” Fast bowler Naseer Jamali, who played for USA at three tournaments in 2013, also sided with Singh.”Robin wanted to bring the best out of us and it was never personal,” Jamali wrote. “He has the old school mentality, which pushed players to give it all they had. And I don’t blame him either for that approach. He had to deal with players that had the attitude and selfishness of amateurs.”While Patel gave an impassioned defense of Singh, he says both the coach and Allen needed to share responsibility for the locker-room confrontation that occurred on the tour of the UAE last year. Baker described the incident to ESPNcricinfo as “almost World War III”, while Allen said it was a major reason for withdrawing his availability for WCL Division Three last month as he no longer wanted to play for Singh. Patel says the incident could have been avoided but the actions of both men indicated that the tension between them had been brewing for some time.”I don’t know what triggered it,” Patel said. “They were just talking normal and all of a sudden both of them got personal so it was hard to tell who was at fault. They were having a conversation and all of a sudden it got heated. If I do something wrong and coach yells at me, I’m sure he only does it for the betterment of my game. You can take it as constructive criticism.”Patel also says he has a good relationship with Orlando Baker, who had also told ESPNcricinfo he would not play under Singh due to the breakdown in their relationship as player and coach. Patel did not hesitate to state that Baker is the best captain he has played under in his USA career, a view echoed by many other players, and hoped that Baker and Singh can patch up any differences they may have.”I talked to Baker and said everyone deserves a second chance,” Patel said. “Me and Baker are on the same page and I told him I think he should reach out to Robin because this will only hurt US cricket. Both guys are important. I think Baker is a great asset along with Robin, and if we can work together we can take things further.”

Josh Hazlewood, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson have effectively become the first three men named in Australia’s Test squad to face India at the Gabba after being rested by Cricket Australia from the round of Sheffield Shield matches that precedes the first Test. The selectors met to decide on their squad on Saturday, before its announcement on Monday. The likely fourth fast-bowling name in Australia’s squad will be Ryan Harris, but he has asked for and been granted an extra run with Queensland to further groove his bowling rhythm following knee surgery. It is plausible that Harris will be in the squad for Brisbane but not play until the second Test in Adelaide, due to commence only four days after the conclusion of the Gabba match. This would be similar to the approach taken with Harris when he was returning from injury at the outset of the 2013 Ashes series in England, where he was deemed unready for Trent Bridge but chosen for Lord’s.Hazlewood would thus be favoured to make his debut at the Gabba, ending a four-year wait since his first international appearance in an ODI in England to finally clasp a baggy green cap. At 23, Hazlewood’s pace, rhythm and steep trajectory are all considered useful weapons against the Indians, who will have only a pair of warm-up matches on more docile Adelaide surfaces before reaching Brisbane.Save for the captain Michael Clarke, all other members of the Test squad are to play in the Shield round, with Shane Watson a chance of being rested from the final ODI against South Africa in Sydney ahead of his first long-form fixture since the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town as far back as March.Brad Haddin has progressed decently in his return from an AC joint injury suffered when he fell heavily on day two of the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, and will lead the Blues against South Australia at the SCG from Tuesday. David Warner and Steven Smith will join him in the NSW batting order.Mitchell Marsh will turn out for Western Australia alongside his brother Shaun, who is a strong chance of being named in the squad despite still struggling to throw following shoulder surgery during the off season. Shaun Marsh’s one hundred in three matches this season is not an outstanding return, but it shades the meagre run-making of both Phillip Hughes and Alex Doolan since their returns from the UAE.Chris Rogers is the only member of the UAE Test squad to have made a first-class century since his return home, a polished effort against South Australia likely to have shored up his place in the squad after he was rumoured to have been very close to the precipice of selection at the end of the Pakistan matches. The tenuous state of Clarke, who is expected to be named in the Gabba squad with a fitness-pending asterisk against his name but is at extremely long odds to play until at least Boxing Day, is also believed to have helped Rogers’ cause, leaving the selectors reluctant to change too many names in the top six.

'Unrest in dressing room' over Dhawan injury – Dhoni

India captain MS Dhoni has said the decision to send Virat Kohli in in place of Shikhar Dhawan on the fourth morning was a late one, which resulted in “unrest” in the dressing room

Sidharth Monga at the Gabba20-Dec-20145:23

Match Point – ‘If the nets are no good, don’t bat in them’

The fourth day’s play at the Gabba began with India 26 behind and with nine wickets in hand, and with talk how these Indian batsmen were different: they would not get into a grim battle for a draw and roll over and die; they were going to go for the runs and set some sort of target for Australia. But even before they could get to attempting that, India were in turmoil. Two of their main batsmen injured themselves because of what they believed to be poor net pitches, and they did not even realise until five minutes before start of play that overnight batsman Shikhar Dhawan was not fit to bat immediately. So unimpressed were India with the practice facilities that they issued an official statement stating how the groundstaff had not paid heed to their requests for fresher pitches. Suddenly, all the simmering tension boiled over.ESPNcricinfo understands India are not happy that there is no gym at the Gabba. The only facility present at the stadium belongs to the Brisbane Lions, the AFL team that shares the stadium with cricket. When the Indians wanted to use the gym, the Lions were training at the facility, and turned down their request. More discontent surfaced with two of the players having to step out of the stadium to find vegetarian food on the third day of the Test. However, MS Dhoni conceded that India could have handled the early-morning crisis. The team knew that Dhawan had been hit on the hand, but realised he was not fit to bat only five minutes before 10am. “We went to practise, and the wicket wasn’t good for it,” Dhoni said. “A few of the batsmen batted, and Shikhar got hit and left. After that I had padded up and went in. He was a bit uncomfortable, but he didn’t react as to he won’t go out to bat. He came back to the dressing room, and Duncan [Fletcher] and I were there, and the by the time I finished my batting I too found the wicket to be a bit uneven.”We also came back early, but by the time we came back it was quite close to the start of play. And there we saw Shikhar wasn’t really 100% fit to go in to bat. It was quite late, and we could only give maybe five-10 minutes’ notice to Virat that he would go in to bat. That’s one area, which we could have handled a bit better, but it’s something that we will have to take it in our stride. We thought he [Dhawan] took a blow, but he was good enough to bat but he was not. As you saw he went into bat late.”That kind of a scenario, there is a bit of unrest in the dressing room. The calmness of the dressing room goes for a toss. It was a bit late to verbally resolve the problem. What was really needed was some kind of a partnership, 20-25 minutes batting and things would have been normal. But that didn’t happen. That was the area we lacked, and we couldn’t really capitalise on.”In hindsight, you could probably see Kohli did not really look settled. He, too, had taken a blow on the left forearm. He played 10 balls before playing Mitchell Johnson on. India went from 1 for 71 to 5 for 87, a collapse they never really recovered from, despite a brave half-century from Dhawan and spirited bowling in defence of just 127. Dhawan decided to bat on without going for scans, “playing through pain” at No. 8, and crossed 50 for the first time in six Tests, adding 55 to his overnight 26.Although Dhoni made more diplomatic comments at the post-match press conference, the statement released by India in the first session was strong. It said: “The Indian team has been asking for the fresh net practice wickets several times for last two days, which have not been provided. Instead of that, they [curators] have asked [us] to practice on worn-out wickets, which have uneven bounce. Because of that, two of our batsmen got injured today morning. One of the two batsmen, Shikar Dhawan, had a right wrist injury. Because of that he was unable to bat in the morning. He is being examined by our physio, and will assess his fitness in some time.”Dhoni was more sedate in his comments after the match. Asked about the overall facilities at the Gabba, Dhoni said, “It can improve. I don’t really want to create a controversy, but it can certainly improve.”ESPNcricinfo understands that such a request was indeed made to the groundsmen at the Gabba, but the Indian team was told those new pitches were being saved for future matches. The fresh practice pitches are being prepared on a specific time-frame, which means they will not be ready for use until a Brisbane Heat training session on December 23. India have not lodged an official complaint with Cricket Australia on the matter, though. The Gabba groundstaff was bemused and surprised at not just the complaint, but also that the request was made in the first place. Curator Kevin Mitchell jr prepares the practice wickets for a full week of training, with the intention that they wear in a similar style to the pitch used for the match. Ryan Harris, who missed selection due to injury for this Test, batted on the same practice surface on the fourth morning, facing fast bowler Ben Cutting, and reported no problems with the conditions. Harris even joked that he had no bruises because he used his bat.”The practice wickets are fine,” Mitchell said. “They wear just like a match pitch does and reflect what is happening in the middle. We have never had a complaint from another touring team.”Australia captain Steven Smith was on the side of the ground where Australia have not lost since 1988. “None of our players had any problems with those wickets, to be honest,” Smith said. “I think they’re very good practice wickets. They emulate pretty much what you get out in the middle. That’s what you want at your playing ground and I don’t think any of our players had any problems with them whatsoever.”

Du Plessis wants to meet NZ in knockouts again

Four years ago, Faf du Plessis was at the vortex of the on-field altercation that fueled South Africa’s folding in the quarter-final against New Zealand. Four years later, he wants to do it all over again

Four years ago, Faf du Plessis was flashy and fun-loving, just four matches into an ODI career when South Africa’s World Cup began, and full of fight, in the literal sense, when it ended.Du Plessis was at the vortex of the on-field altercation that fueled South Africa’s folding in the quarter-final against New Zealand. He made the foul call for the run that was never on and found himself chest to chest with Kyle Mills.Four years later, he wants to do it all over again.”In my perfect world I would like to play New Zealand in the semi-final and have that same situation arise again. But this time it will be the other way around. We’ll be the team that’s on top, and we can do the same to them,” du Plessis said at South Africa’s World Cup squad announcement on January 7, where he also promised that flamboyance is now much less of a feature in his game.”The reason it took me so long to be where I am in my career is that it took me so long to understand that role. There was probably too much flashiness in my cricket.””So long” is not that long at all. In the four years since making his international debut, du Plessis has nailed down the No.3 spot in both the Test and ODI teams and captains the T20 side but he may be comparing it to when he first chose cricket as a career. Du Plessis made his first-class debut in 2004, when his school friend AB de Villiers made his maiden Test appearance. De Villiers went on to hold the world record for the most number of consecutive Test appearances since debut but du Plessis took the scenic route, via Kolpak, before he was considered for the South Africa team.He began as a lower-order batsman who was thought to have the ability to hit big and he did not want to blow his chance by proving a wolf in sheep’s clothing. But that’s what he was. “I’ve always believed that I’m better up the order but when you come into a team you can’t pick where you want to bat, you do what the team needs from you,” he said. “I came in at No. 6 and 7, and it wasn’t something I was used to. I took two years to understand what to do; how to finish games. Although I understood it better, I don’t think I was the best finisher.”On Test debut, du Plessis proved himself more of a resistor. He saved the Adelaide Test and then the Johannesburg one against India and showed he batted best in a crisis. “It’s something that started in the Test matches and that’s made me a lot more mature as a batsman.”When Jacques Kallis retired and du Plessis was promoted to No.3 in ODIs, he was given the opportunity to become a builder in that format, which is exactly what he knew he was. “I always believed I was more suited up the order so when I got the opportunity it was nice to show that was something I wanted to do – I wanted to score hundreds. No. 3 is my blueprint of batting.”Du Plessis cantered his way to three centuries in a triangular series in Zimbabwe when given the No. 3 role and aims to be a similar bridge between a solid start and a flourishing finish at the World Cup.”I understand my role better and it makes my game stronger and makes the team’s game stronger,” he said. “Quinnie (Quinton de Kock) and Hash (Hashim Amla) are aggressive players, and in Australia you need guys who can take it on. But guys like AB and David Miller also need protection. You don’t want them to come in too early.”But de Kock may not be fit in time for the tournament opener which could set du Plessis’ plans off. South Africa are experimenting with using Rilee Rossouw in that position but his five ducks from 10 innings may force them to seek more a more secure option like du Plessis. He has already indicated he is willing to do the job.”No. 3 and opening is almost the same. Now that I’ve had the opportunity to bat at No. 3, I don’t see opening as an issue.”A much bigger issue is how South Africa plan to get their hands on the trophy that has eluded them thus far. They have had the longest build-up period of all their competitors with a six-month preparation and the most number of matches but du Plessis thinks those on-field activities will take a back seat. “Something we’re looking at more now is what we have outside of cricket. In terms of off the cricket field, we probably have the best cricket environment you could ask for,” he said. “That’s something I would tip as that 5% extra that perhaps we didn’t have in the past.”Although no blame was ever laid at du Plessis’ door after 2011, particularly not by his team-mates, his reaction during the run-out was thought to symbolise the South African mindset. They got het up too easily and could be out-thought and chastised at will. But for du Plessis, it indicated none of those things.”That moment taught me a lot about myself. I learnt a lot about international cricket. I had always thought I enjoyed a challenge, but after that day I knew that I enjoyed a challenge. When there’s pressure or when it’s tough I like to try and stand up for the team. I learnt a lot about myself when I didn’t stand back to those guys.”They targeted me as a youngster, so that is the advice I would give guys going to this World Cup. Some teams target guys who are younger and less experienced. New Zealand are brilliant at that, the Aussies as well.” If du Plessis is ready to deal with New Zealand, maybe he is eyeing Michael Clarke’s men for the final.
