'Players with right attitude will stay' – Waqar

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan head coach, has said that players with the “right attitude will stay” in the side

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan head coach, has said that players with the “right attitude will stay” in the side. Waqar was optimistic that the young Pakistan players would do well against an “improved” Bangladesh team. After the 2015 World Cup, the Pakistan selectors named a new-look ODI squad led by Test regular Azhar Ali. “It’s a new era and with these new boys I am optimistic that they can serve Pakistan for long from here,” Waqar said. “Talent is there but it is all about opportunities, which they have and now I am hopeful that they will do well in the upcoming Bangladesh series.”It’s a tough series. The way Bangladesh have improved recently they are a fine side and we can’t take them easy. I can’t built a big expectation because we have a young side, a lot of new comers and also I don’t want to put extra pressure on them but I believe they can do the job.”Waqar had written to the PCB with strict recommendations after Pakistan crashed out in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. It is believed that board chairman Shaharyar Khan acted upon Waqar’s suggestions to drop both Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal.”I can’t share much from the report but yes in my report I have written my reservations to the PCB and I am glad that most of them were accepted and the PCB started taking initiative. Of course there is a dire need of an attitude – a right attitude towards many aspects of the game and if we don’t do it and don’t improve we will be left behind. We have seen the fielding in the World Cup and the fitness aspect so we have to do it and I don’t think Pakistan need any such player who does not have the right attitude.”I always try to make the team better. Everyone has their own view but I appreciate criticism from people who do constructive criticism and I don’t care about the rest of them. All I want is that what is needed should be done. Whether someone likes it or not, it should be implemented.”Whoever does well for Pakistan and plays with the right attitude will stay. It’s not like my recommendation in the report made the difference but the selectors did what they deemed best for the team. It’s not my team or your team it’s Pakistan’s team and we all want good results. What I can say is that in the upcoming series you will see a team spirit with new players.”Saeed Ajmal, who had his bowling action cleared, is set to play for Pakistan after a gap of eight months. Waqar applauded Ajmal’s persistence for his return. “Saeed in the last eight months has showed character and his approach towards cricket has been very good,” Waqar said. “He deserves respect. Yes there is a difference between match and practice but he is experienced enough to come good. He is given the opportunity in all three formats and it is going to test where he stands. But he is a seasoned player and humble person and I am sure he will do good.”With the absence of Misbah-ul-Haq, who has retired from limited-overs cricket, and Younis Khan, who has been rested, Waqar said everyone has to move on and that he has faith in the newcomers. “We have to have move on otherwise we will be run out. We have seen recently that we didn’t indulge our new players and suffered a lot. Players should be tested on and off and this should have been a regular practice. Younis and Misbah no doubt are great players and have done so much for Pakistan but moving forward we have Azhar Ali, who is a smart captain, humble person and will be a good option.”The Pakistan ODI and T20 teams played a practice match under lights at Gaddafi Stadium on the penultimate day of their conditioning camp. Pakistan are set to depart for Bangladesh on Monday from Karachi for a series of three ODIs and a T20 followed by two Tests.

NZ present settled side as Bell shows sympathy for Pietersen

The most striking aspect of the Investec summer launch came in the contrast between Ian Bell’s understandably guarded responses, and the utter relaxation of Grant Elliot, nevertheless taken aback by the headlines around English cricket in the past 48 hour

Andrew Miller14-May-20151:23

KP can feel aggrieved – Bell

As the man who struck the six that sealed New Zealand’s epic World Cup semi-final win over South Africa in March, Grant Elliott is no stranger to stressful situations. But even he was taken aback by the blizzard of headlines that have enveloped English cricket in the past 48 hours.”You guys are pretty intense over here,” he said at the launch of the Investec Test summer. “I asked Belly, ‘is it always like this?’ He said, ‘yeah, pretty much’.” Ian Bell, separated from Elliot by compere Nasser Hussain, was visibly braced for impact. The most striking aspect of the morning came in the contrast between Bell’s understandably guarded responses, and the utter relaxation of a New Zealand cricketer who, though he will not be featuring on this tour until the ODIs in June, is self-evidently qualified to speak for the mindset of his Test-playing team-mates. The afterglow of New Zealand’s extraordinary and captivating World Cup has yet to wear off and Elliott spoke with an openness and enthusiasm that must surely be the envy of any England player who longs for a chance to be truly judged on the field.”The cohesion and team environment we had could be seen through the television screen,” Elliot said. “But possibly the best accolade was having mums and dads come up to us, saying my son or daughter wants to play cricket next summer. It was great.”Respect for your team-mates would have played its part too, which is presumably the underlying, and still unspoken reason, for Kevin Pietersen’s blackballing from the England set-up. And yet Bell, who is part of the same management company, could shed no light on the dressing-room politics.”I played ten years with Kevin, we both went through highs and lows, we won a lot of cricket together,” Bell said. “I enjoyed my time with him but it’s very difficult to say anything. Kevin is a quality player, probably the best player I’ve ever played with so he does make any team stronger. But I haven’t sat in on any of these meetings, I don’t know what’s been said between Colin Graves and Kevin, and Tom Harrison and Kevin, and Andrew Strauss and Kevin.”It’s no good us as players talking about that and there have been no conversations in the dressing room about any of this stuff.”There’s no use blaming the players for the situation that their management has created for them, but whatever way you try to spin it, it’s not a good look for a sport that has rarely felt more distant from its public. As Elliott summed up, not without a degree of relish: “It’s complicated, isn’t it?”New Zealand shrugged off their internal politics long ago and throughout the World Cup, the connection between the New Zealand team and their fans was real and heartfelt, and stories abound to illustrate the warmth and the depth of that feeling – a primary school teacher in the Bay of Plenty won a bet (50 press-ups) with an incredulous Year Five student that, yes, she was in fact Trent Boult’s girlfriend, and, yes, if the class behaved for the rest of the term she would ask him to visit. There’s a significant difference in scale between England and New Zealand, of course – Elliott himself likened his home town, Wellington, to a “fishing village” – but the ECB can but dream of creating such a seamless connection between its team and its public.5:37

Elliott backs New Zealand IPL stars to fire in Tests

To that end, Matt Dwyer, formerly of Cricket Australia, has been appointed the ECB’s new director of participation and growth. It is a vital role, in spite of the lumpiness of the title, but nothing compared to the impact that a liberated, exciting, free-spirited national team could create.More’s the pity that, ten years ago, that’s exactly what England had. Though only a rookie at the time, Bell was a member of the 2005 Ashes team that won over the country with every bit as much élan as Brendon McCullum’s New Zealand have shown throughout their recent triumphs.”I remember Michael Vaughan saying he’d rather lose to Australia by taking them on than sit there and lose by playing passive cricket,” Bell said. “I see this summer as similar, we are going to have to be brave, take the odd gamble here and there, and if we play good cricket, we can start changing people’s opinions on the team and start getting people talking about cricket again, which is what we all play for.”But we’re certainly not in the place ideally that we’d like right now.”Indeed. If England are embarking on a long-term project – and Andrew Strauss appeared to imply that a five-year rebuilding mission is on the cards – then the first Test at Lord’s, now only seven days’ away, is probably too soon to hope that England can exorcise the negativity and find a new thrilling brand of KP-free aggression. But they ought to expect some handy pointers on the merits, and otherwise, of all-out attack, as Elliott fully expects Brendon McCullum to stick to the gameplan that has served him well in all formats and all conditions.”He’s a bit of a maverick, he’s risky, but it’s great to be a part of that and you have to buy into it,” he said. “I know that the bowlers turn around and think ‘where the hell are my fielders?’, and they’ll all be in the slips. But you can’t help but be endeared to him and want to play for him. He’s been an integral part of New Zealand’s success.”So too has the underlying recognition that cricket is only a game – as Elliott himself personified after booking New Zealand’s place in the World Cup final. Again, with echoes England’s endeavours in 2005, Elliott’s first instinct was to offer a hand to his beaten opponent. “I’ve got a perspective on the game now,” Elliott said. “That game could have gone any way, my middle pole could still be tumbling out of Eden Park. It’s a game of sport, and it’s about having that respect for your opponents.”

Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman and wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das are the only uncapped players named in Bangladesh’s 14-man ODI squad for the three-match series against India. They replaced Abul Hasan and the injured Mahmudulah.Mustafizur’s international debut was in the T20 against Pakistan in April, while Litton made his debut against India in the Fatullah Test.Abul has featured in six ODIs and played the first ODI against Pakistan in April. Mahmudullah’s finger injury, ahead of the India Test, made way for Litton. It is also likely that Litton could keep wickets in place of Mushfiqur Rahim who is still struggling with a finger injury.Mustafizur was impressive since he toured the West Indies with Bangladesh A last year. He was one of the top wicket-takers among pace bowlers in domestic cricket. He took the wickets of Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez on his T20I debut, in which he bowled with much verve. The three ODIs against India will be played in Mirpur on June 18, 21 and 24.ODI squad: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan (vice-captain), Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Arafat Sunny, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Rony Talukdar, Mustafizur Rahman, Liton Das

Want to play all three formats – Vijay

M Vijay’s inconsistent ODI career was given a boost after his career-best 72 in the second ODI that was the undergird to India’s total of 271

Liam Brickhill12-Jul-2015M Vijay has had to wait a long time to move from an understudy to a main act as an Indian opener in ODIs, with 16 ODIs spread over more than five years since his debut against South Africa in 2010. When he wafted Brian Vitori to second slip in the opening match of this series, it appeared he may have fluffed his chance once again, but his 72 in the second ODI – a career-best score – was the undergird to India’s unassailable 271 and their series win.”I’ve been there or thereabouts in the one-dayers and have been the third opener for quite some time, so this is a good opportunity for me to establish myself as a one-day player,” Vijay said. “I always wanted to play this format and play all three formats. So it’s just around the corner. You’ve got to wait your turn. I’m not in a hurry, but when I get an opportunity I’m keen to score runs.”It’s hard to fathom why it’s taken so long for Vijay to settle in this format – he averages over 40 in List A cricket and was one of India’s most consistent batsmen in Test cricket in 2013 and 2014. “[There are] a lot of variables. I don’t want to think about it now because it’s done and dusted – for me this is a new beginning and I’m looking forward to the opportunities coming for me. I think I’m batting well, which is more important, and I’m enjoying my cricket, so whichever format doesn’t matter to me so long as I’m batting.”Before today, he had scored 25 or more six times without passing 33, but while he was pleased to pass fifty he felt that he should have scored more than his 72 today.”It’s not really [a good return] but I’m enjoying my game so I’m not looking too far ahead. As long as I’m enjoying my cricket I think everything will fall into place. To be honest I was not playing at my best, but according to the conditions we decided not to give early wickets because then the team is under more pressure. We thought 260 or 270 was a good score on this wicket because it was getting slower and lower.”Ultimately, Vijay’s opening stand with Ajinkya Rahane was the tonic which allowed India to reach that score, and though he couldn’t push on to a maiden ODI century he was pleased to have stuck to the gameplan. “You saw in the first game we had a bit of a collapse, so we thought rather take time and play our game, so that we give the middle order an opportunity to come and do their job. We did that,” he said
