Lack of DRS in focus as Pujara rides his luck in Ranji semi-final

Players and coaches involved in the game between Karnataka and Saurashtra have indicated that they would welcome the use of technology in domestic cricket, especially in knockout matches.

Saurabh Somani28-Jan-2019Players and coaches involved in the sometimes contentious Ranji Trophy 2018-19 semi-final between Karnataka and Saurashtra have indicated that they would welcome the use of technology to aid umpires in domestic cricket too, especially in knockout matches.”Definitely, if they can use DRS then nothing like it. We will have a fair game,” Yere Goud, the Karnataka coach, said.Saurashtra captain Jaydev Unadkat was also for the idea. “It’s good for the game, whatever technology you can include,” he said. “We’ve seen it at the international level as well. It has really helped teams. I think the BCCI would be the best judge to look at it. I’m sure people there would be looking at it. Obviously, whatever technology you can include can help the game for sure.”Saurashtra won the game by five wickets on the fifth morning, driven by Cheteshwar Pujara’s 131 not out in the fourth innings, but Karnataka were left aggrieved by umpiring errors, believing that Pujara had got a nick when on 34, shortly after lunch on the fourth day. Vinay Kumar, the bowler, and all the Karnataka fielders appealed spontaneously, but umpire Saiyed Khalid remained unmoved. There was a sound as ball passed bat – though on replays, without the aid of HotSpot or UltraEdge, it was difficult to say conclusively that the sound was the result of an edge.
That this followed from the first innings when Pujara had been given a reprieve by the same umpire when he appeared to have gloved Abhimanyu Mithun behind lent an edge to the proceedings, with the crowd at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium also getting involved as Pujara was greeted by chants of “cheater” and booed.ESPNcricinfo understand that Khalid has been rated as among the top 15 umpires in the country based on this season’s domestic performance, which played a part in him being appointed for the semi-finals.Goud didn’t appear to hold issue with Pujara not having walked. “It is left on the individual,” he said. “Because sometimes players get bad decisions, generally they don’t walk. That has been the case in most of the domestic matches we’ve seen.”On the umpiring specific to the match, Unadkat said both sides had received decisions for and against them, but held that nothing could take away from the way Pujara and Sheldon Jackson (100) constructed the chase, with a 214-run stand for the fourth wicket from 23 for 3.”I think anyone can have a tough game. The ball was moving a lot, deviating from the wicket,” Unadkat said. “I’d just say that [the umpiring] has been neutral for sure… [Karnataka] thought it was out, we thought it was not out. There were a couple of other decisions as well, which went against us, and we didn’t really it take in our mind and play the game, which I think they did.”I’m really happy, don’t want to take any credit away from how we played this game, how we fought after being 23 for 3, and playing the way Cheteshwar and Sheldon played.”Karnataka captain Manish Pandey mentioned the umpiring obliquely, telling the host broadcaster after the game, “Unfortunately, a couple of decisions went against us, maybe a couple of performances would have made a difference today.”

Newcastle pencil in Murphy contract talks

Newcastle United are keen to tie down Jacob Murphy to a new contract and talks will take place ‘in the coming weeks’, according to a report from Football Insider.

Murphy’s £25,000-per-week deal is set to expire in the summer, and potential suitors have been on alert.

Football Insider named Scottish champions Rangers, Newcastle’s mid-table rivals Southampton and recently-promoted Watford among the clubs who are keen, but the Magpies are now seeking to ward off that interest with Murphy enjoying a strong run of form.

Murphy shines in Toon’s survival push

Murphy has started Newcastle’s last four games at right-back, helping his side pick up eight points from a possible 12 and take giant strides towards Premier League safety.

The Englishman was hailed for an ‘excellent’ display in the 2-2 draw against Spurs before going on to score an excellent equaliser as Newcastle fought back to beat Burnley the following week.

Journalist Lee Ryder then awarded Murphy a seven out of 10 at the weekend after the Magpies snatched a draw away to Liverpool, saying that the 26-year-old ‘never gave up and kept pressuring’.

Transfer Tavern verdict

What has been really impressive about Murphy’s performances is that he knows he’s playing for his future and he has duly come alive.

He could so easily be trying too hard to impress or be playing with a weight on his shoulders, but that’s not the case whatsoever based on his efforts of late, so it makes infinite sense to extend the 26-year-old’s stay, especially as he has played his part in easing Newcastle away from the drop zone.

Leeds: Raphinha suitors have made ‘no contact’

There has no been ‘no contact’ from clubs showing an interest in Leeds United star Raphinha, according to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season for the Whites, arguably standing out as his side’s star man.

Raphinha has chipped in with six goals and assists apiece in the Premier League, with his pace, dribbling and unpredictability making him a nightmare for opposition defenders.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Brazilian’s form has seen him linked with some of the top clubs in the country, with Liverpool one of those tipped to sign him.

Hay provides key Raphinha update

Hay has given a positive update from a Leeds perspective, however, telling David Ornstein that there has been no concrete interest in Raphinha yet:

“In terms of Raphinha, the last time I asked about him there had been no contact of note.

“For all the links to the various clubs, particularly the top four in England, there was nothing behind it.

“But you have to be sensible enough to know it all depends on who bids what and when they bid.”

Transfer Tavern take

The thought of Leeds losing Raphinha just a year after he arrived is a worrying one, considering what a huge impact he has made.

If Marcelo Bielsa’s men want to go up another level in the league, they need to be keeping hold of their biggest players and the silky wide man is certainly one of those.

His aforementioned 12 goal involvements are proof of that and his level of threat means opponents often focus on him, opening up space for teammates to run into.

It would also leave a sour taste in fans’ mouths, given the kind of cult hero Raphinha has already developed into thanks to his frankly ridiculous moments of skill – such as the nutmeg on Gary Cahill.

Update provided on SAFC’s McGeady

Lee Johnson has revealed Aiden McGeady’s chances of appearing for Sunderland against Accrington Stanley this weekend are 50-50.

Johnson provides McGeady update

McGeady missed the Black Cats’ match against Hull City during the week with an ankle issue as his side managed a 2-2 draw.

Speaking prior to this weekend’s clash against Accrington, Johnson provided an update on the 35-year-old. He said (via The Northern Echo):

“I’d put Aiden at 50-50 (for the weekend). He’s tough, like I’ve said, so he wants to play. He’s still very bruised, but at the same time it is a superficial injury.

“It’s not anything bone-related or ligament-related, so if he can handle the pain of smashing one in from 25 yards, hopefully in the top corner, then he can play. It’s as simple as that.”

Save him for the play-offs

Even though he is approaching the end of his career, McGeady is enjoying a fantastic season, especially since the arrival of Johnson. In his last 24 League One appearances, he has managed four goals and 12 assists (Transfermarkt), helping the Black Cats chase their dream of automatic promotion.

Unfortunately, results over the last few weeks mean Sunderland are likely to have to make do with the play-offs if they want to move up to the Championship. As such, it makes no sense to rush McGeady back into the action too quickly. They will need him for the last few games of the campaign – it is then that he can make a real difference to his side’s fortunes.

MCFC: Fans react to Pep’s Aguero talks

Numerous fans of Manchester City have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed a claim revealing Pep Guardiola’s conversation with outbound City star Sergio Aguero.

On Monday evening, Aguero posted an emotional statement on Twitter, in which the 32-year-old confirmed that, after 10 years at Manchester City, he will be leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

However, Mike Minay then claimed that, rather than Aguero deciding his future at City alongside the club, as had been suggested previously, Guardiola “told” the Argentine that the latter would be leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer “in a private meeting” between the two of them.

After City Xtra relayed Minay’s claim on Twitter, many fans of Manchester City flocked to have their say on the matter, with several venting their fury with the 50-year-old City manager as they seemed to believe that the Spaniard has treated the club legend in a “disrespectful” manner.

So, what did these Manchester City fans have to say in reaction to the news of Guardiola’s Aguero conversation?

“This is really disappointing from Pep. Aguero deserves more this season, especially with Jesus lacking goals. He could have proved himself then and would have earned an extension.”

@L_Sane_19

“Pep treating Aguero like this is really disrespectful. I have to hate Pep.”

@H_RICHARD5

“It may be better for Sergio to go before Pep ruins his career like he did Joe Hart’s.”

@kateylangridge

“What happened to it being Kun’s choice??”

@FloatedQuickley

“They fed us lies and we believed them.”

@brod_riguez

“Josep Guardiola better have a solid replacement otherwise Khaldoon Al Mubarak will be making another phone call real quick.”

@SheikhManCity08

“Big mistake and sad for those who think we will get Haaland, we will end up with Danny Ings or Lukaku.”

@Revanchist20

“Pep nooooooooo, not in front of no fans.”

@MoNasereldin

“So Pep is the reason?”

Exclusive: Keith Gillespie fears for Sander Berge’s future after long-term injury

Former Sheffield United midfielder Keith Gillespie has exclusively told Football FanCast that the Blades have missed Sander Berge’s “quality”, but thinks his injury record could see him struggle for a future move away from Bramall Lane.

The Norwegian joined from Genk for a club-record fee last January, but whilst the midfielder featured in all 14 of United’s Premier League remaining 2019/20 games following his arrival, he’s been plagued with injuries this term and therefore hasn’t been able to help the club battle against relegation.

He appeared in Sheffield United’s opening 13 league matches this season, but hasn’t been available since having surgery on a tendon his leg following an injury sustained in the defeat to Manchester United before Christmas.

Berge still has more than three years remaining on his Blades contract, but with the club on the verge of relegation, is set to leave Bramall Lane this summer – with north London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal both interested in the 23-year-old.

Despite those links, Gillespie believes that Berge’s recent injuries could make a potential summer move difficult for him. He told Football FanCast:

“Berge was brought in for a lot of money and he has been injured for most of the season, so that can hinder you because you want somebody with that quality to come in and help the side.

“Berge, who’s going to come in for him? He hasn’t played that much. You don’t know how injury prone he can be, he’s missed a huge chunk of the season.

“I certainly think he would have improved Sheffield United this season.”

Paul Stewart claims Winks not good enough

In an exclusive interview with Transfer Tavern, Paul Stewart, who made 169 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, has claimed that Harry Winks is not good enough to play in the Premier League.

Winks first made his debut for Spurs in 2014 and has gone on to appear 170 times for his boyhood club in all competitions, including coming on as a substitute in the 4-0 win against Sheffield United on Sunday, and even started in their Champions League final defeat to Liverpool.

The 25-year old has struggled for regular game time this season making just seven league starts and was linked with a move away to Valencia in January, something Jose Mourinho was strongly against.

Speaking on why Winks is not Premier League quality and how there are many players just like him, Stewart told The Transfer Tavern:

“I’ve got to be honest, I’ve been a bit of a critic of Harry because I think he’s neat and tidy and retains the ball but there are better players out there.

“I hope he proves me wrong, but I don’t think he’s Premier League quality because he doesn’t offer enough in the modern-day game. I’ve seen other players like that in the past who flatter to deceive.”

Winks has earned 10 caps for England since making his debut back in 2017, however, it appears unlikely he will be going to the Euros this summer with the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Jude Bellingham ahead of him in the pecking order.

The £50,000 per week midfielder appears to currently be fourth-choice central midfielder under temporary manager, Ryan Mason, so his future may depend heavily on who is appointed manager in the summer.

Gers fans shocked at Sadiq news

Glasgow Rangers fans are shocked after it was revealed Bayern Munich are interested in signing Ibrox flop Umar Sadiq.

Sadiq spent around six months on loan at Rangers in 2018, and managed just four outings for the 55-time Scottish champions – he failed to hit the back of the net even once (Transfermarkt). However, since then, his career has gone from strength, scoring 23 goals in 52 games for Partizan Belgrade before netting 17 in 32 for Almeria.

Now, according to Spanish outlet AS, Bayern are said to be eyeing a move for the 24-year-old Nigeria international. He has a release clause of €60m (£52m) at his current outfit – that will become €80m (£69.4m) if they are promoted to La Liga – but Almeria would reportedly consider an offer of €30m (£26m).

Given his poor displays for them during his time in Scotland, Rangers fans are perplexed as to how he is now on the radar of the European champions. They took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.
