Rangers fans blast Porteous vs Hibernian

Some Glasgow Rangers fans have been blasting Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous after his ‘dangerous’ challenge on Joe Aribo resulted in a red card in Sunday’s clash at Ibrox.

The centre-back lunged in on the Nigerian when he appeared to be through on goal and was over the top of the ball with his attempted tackle, resulting in referee Nick Walsh sending him off straight away.

It came at a good time for Steven Gerrard’s team, who were 1-0 down at the time at Ibrox through an early Kevin Nisbet strike, and it certainly helped their cause as they went on to win 2-1 in the end thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos.

Nonetheless, it was a challenge which left a lot of Light Blues fans fuming, as Porteous could have seriously hurt Aribo with the way that he approached the tackle.

Everton: Harry Winks price tag revealed

Tottenham Hotspur demanded £40million for Everton target Harry Winks, according to The Times’ Gary Jacobs.

The lowdown

Winks started just nine Premier League matches for Spurs last season, and has only played 61 top-flight minutes so far this term (via WhoScored).

It’s a tricky period for a player Mauricio Pochettino once compared to Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The 25-year-old has two years left to run on his £50,000-per-week contract at the North London club.

Winks has racked up ten England caps since his debut in October 2017, but has yet to make the squad for a major tournament (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

The report states that both Everton and Aston Villa were interested in signing the Englishman during the summer transfer window.

However, Spurs’ valuation deterred both clubs from making a move.

Had Everton agreed to pay £40million, it would have been their second biggest transfer outlay of all time.

The verdict

It was inevitable that Everton pulled out when that figure was floated. £40million is a frankly extortionate price tag for Winks, a player who despite his ability on the ball lacks the athleticism to thrive as a true box-to-box midfielder.

In all honesty, you could question whether, even for a quarter of that price, he truly improves Everton. This is a player who has stagnated in north London.

Rafael Benitez is probably better looking elsewhere if he’s intent on bolstering his midfield ranks.

In other news, a contract extension for this midfielder has been predicted.

United eyeing Saints beast Livramento

An update has emerged on Southampton right-back Tino Livramento, regarding interest in him from Manchester United.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have identified Southampton right-back Tino Livramento as a potential target for the next transfer window.

The report claims that Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s poor technique in the attacking third has caused them to be on the lookout for a new right-back, with Livramento now in their sights.

Fans would hate it

Martin Semmens must avoid a Southampton disaster following this update. The 18-year-old beast has burst onto the scene this season after joining from Chelsea in the summer and fans would hate it if the club immediately cashed in on his bright form in January.

The Saints must fight hard to resist the temptation of selling him in the next window if United come in with an offer, as he has the potential to improve further. He has already started all five of the club’s Premier League matches and averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.80, which could be why the likes of Manchester United are now looking at signing him.

However, this seems unlikely to be the peak of his career. Upon Livramento’s arrival at St. Mary’s, Hasenhuttl lauded him as one of the best young right-backs in the country and said that St. Mary’s is the ideal place for his development. He said:

“He is one of the best young players in his position in the country and there were a lot of clubs who were interested in signing him, but finally he chose to join us.

“I think he has made a very good choice, and this will be an excellent place for him to continue his development and hopefully reach his full potential.

“He is very much in line with the profile of player we want and I think he will adapt very well to our system and methods. To be around the first team of Chelsea at his age speaks about his ability.”

These quotes from Hasenhuttl suggest that he believes the defender can achieve big things at Southampton in the long term and develop into a top player. Therefore, Semmens must fight to keep hold of him in the short-term as his value could skyrocket if he is able to fulfill his potential to continue to improve as a right-back.

Fans would be livid if Southampton sold him before they had a chance to see what he could do with more experience under his belt on the south coast.

MCFC fans want Ronaldo

Manchester City fans want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer after it was suggested the Portuguese striker has been offered to the Citizens.

Despite possessing a squad full of talent and recently adding Jack Grealish (mancity.com) to their plethora of attacking options, it has not been the best start to the campaign for City this term.

They lost the Community Shield against Leicester City and they followed that up with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the opening matchday of the Premier League season.

In a shock report, the Corriere dello Sport (via Marca) has suggested £40.5m-valued Ronaldo (Transfermarkt) has been offered to the Etihad Stadium outfit. While the 36-year-old may be approaching the end of his career, he has still managed 101 goals in 133 games for Juventus (Transfermarkt), showing he still has plenty of his legendary ability.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the City supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Ronaldo news below

Newcastle eye Winks, Jones & Choudhury

Steve Bruce is now reportedly eyeing up moves for as many as three players from the Premier League for Newcastle United before the transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Bad start

There is no sugar-coating that it has been a bad start to the new 2021/22 season for the St. James’ Park faithful.

After losing both of their opening games in the Premier League, they crashed out of the Carabao Cup second round on penalties to Burnley on Wednesday night, and so new signings could not come quicker for the North East club in order to boost their squad.

The Latest: Three players eyed

As per The Daily Mail, Bruce is now looking to sign Hamza Choudhury on loan, while he also holds an interest in both Harry Winks and Phil Jones.

However, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland manager has already admitted that he needs to move some players on first of all before they can make any new additions.

The Verdict: Sign sign sign

What all three players have in common is they all offer a vast amount of experience in the top flight, with Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United respectively.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Once likened to legendary midfielders Xavi and Iniesta by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino (Birmingham Mail), Winks certainly has a point to prove to show why he was given his senior England debut back in 2017 (Transfermarkt), while Choudhury would also add some tenacity and bite to the current options in the middle of the park.

At 29 years of age now, Jones is also a player who will want to show that he is still capable of playing in the Premier League week in and week out, and so all three could be smart deals for the Tyneside club if they can secure loan deals at minimum cost.

Wolves must sign Kang-in Lee

Wolves took to the transfer market last summer with a ruthless eye. They spent an eye-catching sum of money, paying over £50m for the acquisitions of Nelson Semedo and Fabio Silva.

However, this year has been completely different for the Old Gold.Huge fees haven’t been paid with spending limited at Molineux. Trincao has been added to their ranks on a loan deal but beyond that, not much will catch the eye in terms of incomings. One player they were linked with heading into the summer was Valencia’s Kang-in Lee. Yet, with a release clause of £71m, a deal looked completely off the table.Fresh reports dictate that he may be available for just €10m (£8.5m) and if he is, Wolves must seek out a deal.An attacking midfielder by trade, Lee is one of the most exciting prospects in South Korean football.Dubbed “spectacular” by Valencia great Dario Felman, he made 27 appearances for Valencia last term, scoring just one goal but providing four assists for his troubles during an impressive season. Also capable of playing on the wing, there are plenty of strings to a bow that cuts through opposition defences in devastating fashion.Compared to David Silva, he was in particularly good form during the Tokyo Olympics. Lee found the net on three occasions for his country, demonstrating that he has the qualities to thrive on the biggest of stages.Speaking about his game previously, Valencia academy director Luis Vicente Mateo said: “He is willing to learn every day, regardless of whether he is in first or second-team training. He is a player with outstanding talent.”His numbers aren’t the greatest just yet but Wolves have proven themselves to be the perfect club for young players coming through. You only need to look at Pedro Neto who captured the imagination with some dazzling performances last term, ending the campaign as the club’s Player of the Season and their joint-top scorer. What’s particularly exciting about Lee’s style of play is his close touch control. The 20-year-old completed 1.6 dribbles per game last term – a tally that would have placed him fourth in the Wolves squad.Considering just how young he is, those numbers will only improve. He must be at the top of Wolves’ priorities for now.AND in other news, Wolves eye swoop for “tenacious” 37-cap warrior, he could be their new Ruben Neves…

Seri edging closer to Fulham exit

Fulham midfielder Jean Michael Seri could be edging closer to a departure from Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to reports in France (via Football League World), Napoli and Galatasaray are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the 30-year-old ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The report continues by stating that the Serie A side are contemplating an offer for the Ivory Coast international as a result of an injury crisis, however, it is not mentioned whether they would want to sign the midfielder on a permanent or temporary basis.

It is also stated that, with Seri now entering the final year of his contract in west London, should the Cottagers wish to receive any kind of transfer fee for their £27m 2018 signing, they will have to do so this summer.

Stealing a living

It would be a difficult argument to make that Seri has been a successful signing for the Cottagers, as the midfielder has made just 36 appearances in all competitions over his three years at the club, having been twice sent out on loan – firstly to Galatasaray and most recently to Girondins Bordeaux.

Indeed, in the one full season the 30-year-old has spent at Craven Cottage following his arrival, the £3.6m-rated man failed to live up to expectations, averaging a disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.55 over his 32 Premier League appearances back in the club’s 2018/19 campaign.

And, considering the man Xavi once claimed possesses “Barca DNA” is reported to earn a princely £65k-per-week at Fulham – the second-highest salary in the current Cottagers squad.

It would indeed appear highly advisable for Marco Silva to do all he can to move the midfielder on this summer, particularly as it seems the Portuguese boss has no intention of utilising Seri this season, with the former OGC Nice man being an unused substitute in the club’s season-opening fixture against Middlesbrough last weekend.

The diminutive 5 foot 6 ace would be merely stealing a wage by not playing and festering away in the reserves all season. It’s time to be ruthless and shift him out before this month’s transfer deadline.

West Brom out of Harry Wilson transfer race

West Bromwich Albion will not be bringing Harry Wilson to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Goal, who claim that Valerien Ismael’s side are no longer in the race for the Liverpool winger, with the Premier League club’s £15m asking price believed to be well out of Albion’s price range, while the Reds are also thought to be unwilling to allow the 24-year-old to leave on a loan deal.

The report continues by stating that West Brom’s likely promotion rivals Fulham now are leading the race for the Wales international, with personal terms between the two parties not thought to be an issue, although it remains to be seen whether Marco Silva’s side will meet Liverpool’s asking price with an offer.

Fans surely gutted

With it very much appearing as if West Brom winger Matheus Pereira will be leaving The Hawthorns this summer, having been linked with the likes of West Ham United, Norwich City, Leeds United and Leicester City in recent weeks, in addition to the fact that Wilson himself has proven a fantastic player in the Championship, the news that the Baggies are out of the race for the winger is sure to have left fans gutted.

Indeed, the 24-year-old highly impressed during his most recent loan spell at Cardiff City, with the £15.3m-rated man scoring seven goals, registering 11 assists and creating 11 big chances over his 37 Championship appearances for the Bluebirds last season.

These returns saw the man Klopp dubbed a “world-class” striker of the ball earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.20, ranking him as Cardiff’s second-best player in the second tier of English football.

The £41k-per-week forward has also impressed during spells at both Hull City and Derby County in the past, scoring seven goals and providing four assists and bagging 16 goals and registering four assists for the Tigers and the Rams respectively.

As such, should Pereira indeed go on to secure a move away from Albion this summer, Wilson would have very much appeared to be a decent replacement for the Brazilian – who scored 11 goals and registered six assists in the Premier League last season.

However, with Fulham looking the most likely club to land the Welshman ahead of next season, not only will Ismael fail to benefit from the 24-year-old’s undoubted talent, it would appear as if one of the club’s main Championship rivals will – an eventuality that is sure to leave all involved with the Baggies incredibly frustrated.

What the Everton board promised to Benitez

The process that took Rafa Benitez to Everton was an incredibly longwinded one.

The Spaniard revealed his desire to return to the Premier League back in March and, four months later, he’s had his wish fulfilled.

That said, if you told him at the beginning of the year that he’d be heading to Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals at Goodison Park, he’d have probably laughed.

What’s the word?

Benitez has been in the Everton hotseat for 48 hours now and details are beginning to emerge surrounding why he wanted the job.

According to Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window Podcast, the 61-year-old was given assurances over the club’s transfer budget.

Speaking this week, McGarry said: “We understand that Benitez spoke to his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti before that meeting to ask what it had been like managing the Merseyside club, which was a positive conversation.”

The reporter added: “Benitez has been assured that he will have money to spend in order to improve the squad with the aim of playing European football and also being in the space where they are considered to be on the up in terms of challenging.”

Exciting news

This news should be music to the ears of Everton supporters and the club’s new manager.

The Toffees haven’t been afraid to lash out vast sums of money in years gone by, with a grand total of £448.98m spent since the 2017/18 campaign.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-everton-news-benitez-kamara-romero-dumfries” title= “Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

What’s happened with that money has been a rugged state of affairs. Despite Farhad Moshiri’s immense spending power, they’ve not been able to claim an elusive spot in the Champions League or even the Europa League.

Not since the days of David Moyes have the Toffees reached the qualification stages for Europe’s top club competition, so it will take a great deal of planning and work to get them back there. After all, it doesn’t matter how much you spend if the deals you’re concluding aren’t on top players.

A small improvement has been made in recent years with James Rodriguez, Ben Godfrey and Richarlison becoming regular starters and key players during Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure. However, you sense that Benitez will relish the opportunity to sink his teeth into a hefty budget as promised.

The Spaniard impressed at Newcastle by guiding them to promotion from the Championship but, once he was back in the top flight, Mike Ashley presented him with very limited funds, breaking promises in the process. Those were ultimately the main reasons behind Benitez’s departure from St James’ Park.

Consequently, the opportunity to spend more money at Everton should be enthralling for the new Toffees manager.

It should also be exciting news for supporters. If the money available is really going to be spent on players who can help them break into the top six, this could be a campaign to remember.

Perhaps this is the catalyst for supporters to back Benitez rather than grill him. They should be delighted with initial events following his appointment.
