Their own Gyokeres: "Sensational" £50m striker now wants to sign for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be making some serious moves in the transfer market this summer, splashing the cash during Thomas Frank’s first window at the helm.

The Dane has been tasked with the challenge of making the Lilywhites consistent title challengers in the years ahead, with the ambition shown by the board backing such a vision.

They have already completed the £55m signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United, with other big-money additions expected between now and the start of the season.

Morgan Gibbs-White has been another huge name touted with a big transfer to North London, even triggering the Nottingham Forest star’s £60m release clause in his contract.

Despite triggering such a clause, the Reds have blocked such a transfer from taking place, leading to multiple other Premier League forwards emerging on the Lilywhites’ shortlist.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new signings this summer

Tyler Dibling has once again appeared on Spurs’ radar this window, potentially being a shrewd addition given Southampton’s relegation from England’s top-flight.

However, despite dropping into the Championship, the Saints are currently demanding £55m to part ways with the teenager during the current transfer window.

Another name has emerged as a possible option for Frank this summer, in the form of Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

The journalist confirmed that the 28-year-old wants a move to join the Lilywhites this summer, once again linking up with Frank after scoring 19 league goals under the Dane last season.

He also states that the DR Congo international would be prepared to reject interest from Newcastle United in favour of a move across the capital, with a £50m transfer fee mooted.

Why Spurs’ £50m target could be their answer to Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres has been one of the most in-demand talents throughout the current transfer window, unsurprisingly so given his staggering goalscoring record at Sporting CP.

The Swedish international managed to net 54 goals in just 52 outings across all competitions last campaign, taking his tally of goals in Portugal to a whopping 97 in just 102 outings.

As a result of such form, the 27-year-old has been valued at £70m this summer, leading to strong interest from Manchester United, but he now looks set for a move to North London rivals Arsenal.

Such a deal will undoubtedly improve Mikel Arteta’s side in 2025/26, but questions have been asked around Gyokeres’ ability to impress in England’s top flight.

However, Frank’s side have the opportunity to land their own version of the Swede in a deal for Wissa, possessing a similar playstyle in being able to operate off the shoulder of the defender and handing the side that poacher instinct in front of goal.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

When comparing the pair’s stats from the recent campaign, the DR Congo star managed to outperform him in multiple areas, handing the side an added threat within the final third.

Wissa, who’s been labelled “sensational” by Sky Sports’ Mark McAdam, may have notched fewer goals last season, but did post a better goal per shot on target rate – showcasing he’s more clinical with the chances that fall his way in the final third.

His goalscoring ability is one thing, but the Brentford star has also demonstrated his creativity, completing more passes into the final third per 90, along with a higher pass completion rate – handing others around him the chance to improve their tallies.

Despite his lack of height, Wissa has showcased he’s a better aerial option than Gyokeres, winning more of the battles he’s entered, subsequently handing Frank’s side an excellent all-round option within attacking areas.

Whilst £50m may appear a hefty fee for a 28-year-old forward, it could prove to be excellent business for a player who’s about to enter his prime years – potentially getting even better in the near future.

If he can carry over his form across the capital to North London, it would be a sensational addition and one that could push the club closer to their goal of battling for league titles.

The Lilywhites are now set to travel to Asia for a pre-season tour of the Far East, where they face off against north London rivals Arsenal in Hong Kong before taking on Newcastle in the South Korean capital of Seoul.

Tottenham Hotspur managerThomasFrankcelebrates after the match

Spurs have a final pre-season game against Bayern Munich in Germany before their highly-anticipated UEFA Super Cup clash against European champions PSG – a match that gifts Frank an opportunity to win silverware almost immediately after his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou.

A surprise win against the Ligue 1 heavyweights would be the perfect start to Frank’s tenure in charge, and he’d ideally have a few more summer recruits through the door before they battle Luis Enrique’s men at the Stadio Friuli.

Tottenham are still trying to sign Morgan Gibbs-White despite Nottingham Forest blocking his once-imminent move to N17 earlier this month.

Forest threatened both the north Londoners and Gibbs-White’s agent with legal action for what they deemed to be an ‘illegal approach’ for the playmaker (Sky Sports), but there remains an expectation that Frank could eventually welcome him to Hotspur Way (Fabrizio Romano).

Tottenham were set to welcome Gibbs-White and Mohammed Kudus in quick succession, with a medical scheduled over two weeks ago (BBC). However, Frank is now having to wait a lot longer for the 25-year-old’s arrival with the legalities involved.

According to reports, Spurs are targeting a new centre-back too and have shortlisted a variety of targets for the number six role, including Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha (Alasdair Gold).

Bayern Munich's JoaoPalhinhalooks dejected as he walks off after receiving a red card

This comes after they confirmed the signings of Kudus, Kota Takai, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich earlier this window.

Mathys Tel shares conversation with Harry Kane about joining Tottenham

Speaking of Tel, the Frenchman has now lifted the lid on a conversation he had with Spurs legend Harry Kane about joining the club.

After initially backing out of a transfer to N17 in January, Tel ultimately U-turned and agreed a move to England on an initial loan deal, which included an option to buy for around £45 million.

Chairman Daniel Levy, following a mixed start for the 20-year-old, then negotiated a cut-price £30 million deal for Tel, who’s now signed for them indefinitely ahead of his first full season at the club.

Speaking to Sky Germany, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Tel says that Kane played a role in convincing him to sign for Spurs – with the club’s all-time top scorer offering a helping hand through emotional support.

“Yes, I spoke to him [Kane] beforehand,” Tel said.

“He told me, if you need anything, send me a text, give me a call. I spoke to him; he’s a top guy. (Now it’s a) new challenge, I’m ready for my team, the clubs and also the fans.

The versatile attacker was tipped for a 40-goal season one day by ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, with supporters hoping the still-raw Tel can deliver on that glowing prediction.

Best CM since Rice: West Ham ready to battle to sign "world-class" £42m ace

A big summer continues at West Ham United.

Last season, the Hammers endured a nightmare campaign, finishing 14th in the Premier League, sacking Julen Lopetegui after just 20 league matches in charge, albeit things didn’t improve very much after Graham Potter’s appointment.

Thus, Potter comes into the new campaign under pressure to deliver quickly, but his squad has, so far, been weakened during the summer, meaning the Irons need new recruits and fast.

West Ham United's search for a new midfielder

Both Lopetegui and Potter tried countless different central midfield combinations throughout last season, without ever discovering the winning formula, as the table below highlights.

As the table documents, Tomáš Souček aside, West Ham never landed on a reliable, every-game starting midfield, with a rotating cast of characters deployed during the generally dismal campaign.

In truth, the Irons have never replaced Declan Rice who, as outlined by Roshane Thomas of The Athletic, is one of the best players in the club’s modern-day history, so succeeding him was never going to be easy.

Well, as they search for their best midfielder since Rice, Dave Fraser of The Sun is reporting that West Ham ‘are set to battle’ Everton for the signature of Douglas Luiz, adding that both clubs are ‘desperate’ to bolster their midfield options.

The Brazilian international joined Juventus from Aston Villa for a reported fee of £42.35m only 12 months ago, but this move has not gone to plan, with ex-Juve player Alessio Tacchinardi stating that this transfer has been a complete “disaster”.

Luiz made a miserly 27 appearances for la Vecchia Signora, featuring in just 17% of their minutes, hence why that aforementioned report notes that I Bianconeri are willing to sanction a permanent sale, so could he soon swap Turin for East London?

How Douglas Luiz would improve West Ham

Despite a nightmare campaign in Northern Italy, the reason Juventus signed Luiz in the first place is due to his excellent form at Aston Villa.

During five seasons in the Midlands, Luiz made over 200 appearances, with Adam Gilks stating that he’d become “one of the best sixes in the Premier League”, succinctly labelling him a “world-class” defensive midfielder.

He was awarded Aston Villa’s Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season in 2022/23, before arguably enjoying an even more impressive season the following campaign.

Jacob Tanswell and Mark Carey of The Athletic noted that he created more than 50 chances during the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, the most of any player at the club, praising his ‘influence’ over all facets of the team, citing Unai Emery, who stated that he is “progressing a lot as a midfielder… adding goals and… being demanding”.

As the table outlines, when comparing Luiz’s final season at Villa to Rice’s last year at West Ham, it is the Brazilian who comes out on top pretty much across the board.

douglas-luiz-aston-villa-transfer-gossip-arsenal-edu-arteta-declan-rice

Luiz boasted better statistics when it came to all the attacking metrics, goals, assists and chances created, as well as all the passing numbers, while the out-of-possession statistics were admittedly more even.

Nevertheless, what is clear is that, in the right environment, Luiz is a top-class Premier League midfielder, so could a move to West Ham, which would see him back in claret and blue, revitalise both his career and the Hammers alike?

Tottenham targeting £35m swoop to sign goalscoring midfielder with Kudus

Having already set their sights on Mohammed Kudus, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly targeting a move worth £35m to sign a goalscoring midfielder ahead of Manchester United.

Tottenham readying second Kudus bid

The Lilywhites are wasting no time in pursuit of West Ham United’s Kudus. After the Hammers reportedly rejected their opening offer, those in North London are reportedly already readying a second bid. This time, they’ll have to table more than £50m, but with the winger keen on the move, Spurs will hope to get their second deal of the summer over the line.

Even if Kudus does join Matthys Tel on Spurs’ list of incomings, however, Daniel Levy still has plenty of work to get done if Thomas Frank is to avoid the same fate as Ange Postecoglou.

With that said, the Lilywhites have also reportedly set their sights on the likes of Daizen Maeda and even Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries. The latter would particularly stand out as an excellent addition following his role as Inter reached the Champions League final last season. Compared to current options, the Dutchman would add plenty of competition.

Tottenham need to sign a new defender or two this summer.

The same can be said about another impressive star too, who has also found himself on Spurs’ radar as they look to kick on with their summer business.

Tottenham now targeting Orkun Kokcu swoop

As reported by Caught Offside, Tottenham are now targeting a move to sign Orkun Kokcu in a summer swoop which will cost just €40m (£35m) if they push on and secure a deal ahead of Manchester United.

The Benfica man is at the peak of his powers at 24 years old and is attracting plenty of attention as a result. Having scored an impressive 12 goals and created a further 11 assists from midfield in all competitions last season, to say that he would hand Spurs a much-needed threat in the middle of the park would be an understatement.

U23 scout Antonio Mango was full of praise for Kokcu back in 2022, describing him as a “great midfielder” with “brilliant ball control”, and he has only kicked on since swapping Feyenoord for Benfica two summers ago.

Whether the Turkish international opts to make it a third season in Portugal is the unanswered question. Kokcu certainly has the ability to step into the Premier League and Spurs would be landing a bargain deal if they secure his signature for just £35m.

Aston Villa in pole position to sign star in total deal that may cost £130m

Aston Villa are thought to be best placed to sign a star in a transfer that could cost a total of £130m over five years, according to a former scout.

Rashford impressing at Aston Villa as Romano shares update

Marcus Rashford has been catching the eye at Villa Park after joining Villa on loan with a £40m option to buy in the summer from Manchester United.

Under Unai Emery, Rashford has impressed enough to break back into the England side, now under Thomas Tuchel, and he recently scored his first goals for Villa against Preston North End in the FA Cup and followed that up with another against Brighton on Wednesday.

There have been rumours of a permanent move to the Midlands for the forward, and Fabrizio Romano recently shared what he knows about the situation.

“Aston Villa are very happy with Marcus Rashford in general,” said Romano.

“So I don’t think, in any case, if they decided to trigger the £40m option clause, I don’t think they would do that just to sell the player again. So in that case, I see Marcus Rashford staying at Aston Villa and having the opportunity to make something long-term with the club. What I can say about Marcus Rashford is that it’s going to be really important to understand financially what happens for Aston Villa.”

Now, another promising claim has been made on the 27-year-old sticking around at Villa Park.

Aston Villa in pole position to sign Rashford in potential £130m package

Ex-scout Mick Brown now believes that Aston Villa are in the best position to sign Rashford on a permanent transfer. There have been claims by Football Insider that a transfer could cost £130m due to Rashford’s £350,000-per-week wage over a five-year period alongside the £40m fee.

Talking to FI, Brown said: “Marcus going out on loan has been a win-win. There was no way his situation at Man United was going to improve, so from that point of view he’s gone away and improved his position. There’s never been any doubt about Marcus’ talent, and now he’s found a platform to display that.

“Aston Villa have gained from it because they were brave enough to take him on loan. Now, I think they’ll be in the best position to keep him on a permanent deal even though there’s going to be interest from elsewhere.

Aston Villa ready to offer 5 year-contract to "unbelievable" Emery target

He’s ready to leave…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 2, 2025

“He’s established there and it’s been a good deal for everybody involved. I think there’s more to come for him there now that he’s got his first couple of goals – that link up with Asensio has been excellent. If they can keep that going and Villa can keep him at the club they’ll be much better for it.

“Manchester United will no doubt benefit as well because they can maximise his price tag when if he had stayed he was a depreciating asset.”

Rashford is also of interest to Bayern Munich, with reports at the end of February saying that the German giants are going all in to sign the winger. However, Brown believes Villa are best placed to seal a transfer, although it could be very expensive for NSWE between now and 2030.

UAE look to script upset of the year against T20 world champions India

Big picture: It’s India against Lalchand Rajput’s UAEIt’s been a month and five days since the most lucrative banner in cricket took field. It is rare that India get such a long break from international cricket. They resume international cricket with a tournament that to the cynical mind exists so that other Asian boards can benefit from India’s economic heft and in turn support the BCCI in the boardroom. However, one mustn’t downplay the opportunity it gives to some of the smaller teams to play big-time opposition.Like UAE, India’s first opponents, who have played a full T20I tri- series since India last played international cricket. They came within a shot of upsetting Afghanistan even though they didn’t win a single match in the tournament. This is just the kind of tough cricket they needed before facing the best team in the world in a year in which their momentum of a bilateral series win against Bangladesh was thwarted by two defeats in ten days to Uganda in the Pearl of Africa series.Make no mistake, they are coming up against the reigning T20 world champions, who are not just the only team to have won every match in a T20 World Cup but one that has only got better since that campaign. India may have a small weakness in not having a specialist bowler who can hit sixes, but their specialist batting’s firepower and their specialist bowling’s uniqueness makes them strong contenders for being the best T20 empire ever created.Who else to know the powerhouse India have become than the UAE coach, Lalchand Rajput, who took India to their first T20 World Cup campaign when the superstars of the game were not even serious about the format? If Rajput and captain Muhammad Waseem can plot a win against India, it will be the upset of the year.Form guideIndia: WWLWW
UAE: LLLLLIn the spotlight: Shubman Gill and Simranjeet SinghIndia’s Test captain Shubman Gill is making a comeback into the T20I team. Not just any comeback but one as a vice-captain, which suggests he will take his opening position. There can be an argument made that he never lost the place, he was asked to vacate it as he prepared for what was perceived as more important cricket at that time. Now he comes back as India get a little more serious about their combination in the lead-up to their world title defence early next year. And he comes back with form: 650 runs in the IPL at a strike rate of 155.87 while batting within himself.Fellow Punjabi, Ludhiana’s Simranjeet Singh bowled to Gill in the nets when the India Test captain was about 12 years old. Always on the fringes of Punjab and Kings XI Punjab, left-arm spinner Simranjeet was stranded in Dubai during the Covid-19 lockdown. He ended up staying back, coaching young cricketers, and now, at 35, will come up against Gill, who has just turned 26.10:21

Does Samson get a place in India’s starting XI?

Team news: Will Sanju Samson get a chance? The big question for India is around Sanju Samson and the No. 8. If Gill takes the opening slot alongside Abhishek Sharma, does Samson bat at No. 3 or in the middle order or does he get to play at all? An ideal T20 combination won’t ask him to bat out of position or disrupt their Nos. 3 and 4, which should open the door for Jitesh Sharma to come back into the XI. Stranger things have happened, though, and there is a lot of popular backing for Samson. The other question for India is: do they play four specialist bowlers plus two allrounders and have no batting from No. 8 onwards or do they go three plus three? If they go four plus two, they could play both mystery spinners in Kuldeep Yadav Varun Chakravarthy, with Harshit Rana asked to do a batting job at No. 8. Three plus three will call for one of the spinners to be left out unless the pitch is a turner, which it doesn’t seem to be.India (possible): 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Harshit Rana, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Varun ChakravarthyAlishan Sharafu, back to opening the innings during the tri-series after an experiment to space the big hitters out through the order, should continue doing so with captain Waseem. Asif Khan and wicketkeeper Rahul Chopra should form the rest of the core of the batting. Junaid Siddique, Muhammad Rohid and Haider Ali are the core of the bowling, with Simranjeet making an impression with figures of 4-0-24-1 in his only match this year.UAE (possible): 1 Muhammad Waseem (capt), 2 Alishan Sharafu, 3 Rahul Chopra (wk), 4 Asif Khan, 5 Muhammad Farooq, 6 Harshit Kaushik, 7 Muhammad Zohaib, 8 Muhammad Jawadullah/Saghir Khan, 9 Haider Ali, 10 Junaid Siddique, 11 Muhammad RohidPitch and conditionsWhen India played in Dubai earlier in the year, in the ODI Champions Trophy, they unleashed four spinners on a used surface. The pitches are likely to be fresher and livelier for the Asia Cup, which might call for more balanced attacks and a second specialist fast bowler to partner Jasprit Bumrah. The oppressive heat at this time of the year will test the conditioning of both the sides.Stats and trivia UAE have played India only once in T20Is, losing by nine wickets in the 2016 Asia Cup. They have also lost each of their three ODIs against India, the last of those in the 2015 World Cup. India hold a 24-3 win-loss record in T20Is since the start of the last T20 World Cup.

Big-money Chelsea flop is fast becoming their new Danny Drinkwater

It’s still early in the season, but even so, Chelsea’s summer business is starting to look questionable.

For example, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho do not look at the level required, and Joao Pedro has one goal in his last seven Premier League games.

Moreover, even though Jorrel Hato is one of the most promising young defenders around, he looked out of his depth in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Fortunately, there is plenty of time for the players to come good, although there is another member of Enzo Maresca’s squad who is starting to look like one of Chelsea’s worst ever signings: Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater's Chelsea career

Drinkwater first shot to prominence when he played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s legendary Premier League triumph in the 15/16 season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Englishman actually stayed at the King Power Stadium for the following campaign, but then, in the summer of 2017, made a £35m move to Chelsea.

While he was a title-winning midfielder, it felt like something of an unnecessary move from the Blues at the time, but nobody would have predicted quite how poorly it was going to go.

He would only make 22 appearances, totalling 1151 minutes, in his first season, on top of dealing with his role as a squad player, he had to contend with persistent calf injuries.

Unfortunately, the following season was even worse, as in addition to yet more injuries, it also became clear that Marizio Sarri did not fancy him at all, and so he ended the season with a solitary 30-minute appearance in the Community Shield.

The following campaign saw him join Burnley on loan for the first half of the season and Aston Villa for the second half.

However, injuries limited him to two appearances for the former, while a training ground incident saw him return to West London after just four appearances for the latter.

The writing was on the wall at this point, and after a loan to Turkish side Kasimpasa for half a season in 2020/21, he made one more move to Reading the following year, where he made 34 appearances and then retired.

It would be hard to describe Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea as anything other than a disaster, and while there were some reasons why, it mostly came down to his inability to remain fit.

Unfortunately for Maresca, it appears that he may now have someone like that in his squad today.

Chelsea's modern Drinkwater

While several players in Chelsea’s team have a less-than-ideal injury record, it’ll come as no shock that Roméo Lavia is the star in danger of becoming Maresca’s own Drinkwater.

Now, before the pitchforks and torches come out, the Belgian has already shown far more in West London than the former Blues man ever did, but that’s not really the point.

Like the former Leicester star, the 21-year-old has been so incredibly unlucky with injuries, and it’s now got to the point where some fans are questioning whether he should still be at the club come next season.

That might sound extreme, but considering he cost in excess of £45m in 2023, it’s really not.

For example, in his first campaign with the club, the midfielder, whom talent scout Jack Kulig once described as having “enormous potential,” played a single game.

Then, despite managing 22 appearances last season, they only amounted to 1,069 minutes of action.

This season, he has made seven appearances, totalling 240 minutes, but is now set to be out for some time after suffering yet another injury against Qarabag FK on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, availability is the best ability, and as one content creator put it, “there is a world-class player in there when he’s fit, but that is the case so rarely.”

Ultimately, Lavia is a better player than Drinkwater was, but due to his inability to remain fit, his Chelsea career could follow the same path.

"Superb" – Mikel Arteta blown away by under the radar Arsenal star in Bayern Munich win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has piled praise on a Gunners star who perhaps went unnoticed during their 3-1 win over Bayern Munich.

Arsenal end Bayern Munich unbeaten streak with 3-1 victory

Vincent Kompany’s Bundesliga champions went into Wednesday night’s Champions League clash off the back of a season-long unbeaten streak, winning all but one of their total games in all competitions.

It was Arsenal’s biggest test on paper, but Arteta’s side passed it with flying colours.

Arsenal delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat Bayern at the Emirates Stadium, extending their perfect Champions League record to five wins from five matches and establishing themselves as genuine European contenders.

Arteta’s side opened the scoring through Jurrien Timber, who powered home a header from Bukayo Saka’s corner after 22 minutes. The Dutchman’s near-post run proved decisive as he guided his effort beyond Manuel Neuer, continuing Arsenal’s remarkable threat from set-pieces this season.

Joshua Kimmich’s accurate pass found ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry, who cushioned the ball into Karl’s path and allowed the teenager to volley emphatically into the roof of the net — with the home side conceding their first goal in Europe this season.

However, the second period belonged entirely to the Gunners, who began to dominate.

Noni Madueke, introduced as a first-half substitute for Leandro Trossard, broke the deadlock with his first Arsenal goal after two months out with a knee injury. The winger’s clinical finish, feeding off fellow sub Riccardo Calafiori, restored the lead and shifted momentum decisively in the home side’s favour.

Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory seven minutes later after capitalizing on a catastrophic error from Neuer, with the result sending Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Champions League table and sealing their first victory over Bayern in a decade.

Captain Martin Odegaard made his comeback from injury as a late substitute too, providing further encouragement ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash with second-placed Chelsea.Declan Rice was simply sensational against Bayern, with the midfielder dominating in midfield and causing Kompany’s men all sorts of problems.Arteta’s substitutions were inspired as well, but one man who delivered yet again was summer signing Cristhian Mosquera.

Mikel Arteta praises Cristhian Mosquera after Arsenal display in Bayern win

The young Spaniard came in to partner William Saliba in place of Piero Hincapie and the injured Gabriel Magalhaes, and despite being scarcely mentioned by critics, Mosquera impressed against Bayern.

Arteta, speaking in his post-match press conference, reserved special praise for the ex-Valencia star.

Those within Arsenal believe the 21-year-old could become one of world football’s best centre-backs in the next few years, and nothing we have seen has given us any reason to doubt that theory.Mosquera made his Premier League debut in Saliba’s stead against Liverpool at Anfield in August, barely setting a foot wrong despite being given a baptism of fire. The youngster does a quite simply brilliant job whenever called upon, and the initial £13 million that Arsenal paid Valencia for his services back in June is beginning to look like one of the bargains of 2025.
