FA Cup Fourth Round: Winners and Losers

Although lacking the whimsical nature of it’s immediate predecessor, there’s something to be said for the Fourth Round of the FA Cup – this year’s edition seeing three Premier League sides held to a draw or defeat by teams from the Football League.

Throw in some gorgeous goals, heroic performances, VAR controversy and even a red card for spitting, and the weekend’s FA Cup action was littered with contentious talking points. Football FanCast run the rule over the most significant by looking at the biggest winners and losers from the Fourth Round…

Winner – Jarrod Bowen

An FA Cup clash right at the end of the transfer window was always going to be something of an audition for Hull City’s highly-rated youngster Jarrod Bowen, but especially with scouts from reportedly no less than eight Premier League clubs attending the KCOM Stadium to run the rule over him. And it’s safe to say the 21-year-old, currently amid his first full season in the Tigers’ first team, passed with flying colours, scoring Hull’s first and assisting the second in a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

The youngster is proving himself to be a real match winner and, assuming we won’t see a deal completed before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, he’ll be desperate for Hull to draw a Premier League club in the next round to showcase his talents against top flight opposition as well.

Loser – Jurgen Klopp

Soccer Football – FA Cup Fourth Round – Liverpool vs West Bromwich Albion – Anfield, Liverpool, Britain – January 27, 2018 Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp reacts REUTERS/Phil Noble

Jurgen Klopp has now been eliminated from the FA Cup during the Fourth Round for all three of his campaigns as Liverpool manager and in the process, he’ll probably miss out on bringing some much-needed silverware to Anfield for a third consecutive season as well.

Indeed, Liverpool’s home defeat to West Brom has left the Reds with only a top four finish and a solid run in the Champions League to play for. In more bad news for Klopp though, it also means he’s once again slipped behind predecessor Brendan Rodgers for winning returns as Liverpool manager, tasting one less victory than the now-Celtic boss after 134 games in charge.

Loser – Arthur Masuaku

Arthur Masuaku’s ‘despicable’ spit, to quote David Moyes, compounded what was a dreadful afternoon for West Ham up at Wigan Athletic as the Irons produced easily their worst performance of the Scot’s short tenure thus far. The Hammers didn’t manage a single shot on target against the League One side and finished up with just 48% possession, and Masuaku’s shocking spit early in the first half was symptomatic of their frustrations.

While Moyes will be quietly relieved he no longer needs to contend with an FA Cup run as well as a relegation battle though, the ninety minutes cost West Ham dearly. Including Masuaku’s six-game suspension for spitting and Pedro Obiang’s first-half injury, the east Londoners now have an incredible 13 players either injured or banned ahead of a week in which they face fellow relegation candidates Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Winners – Manchester United

The Alexis Sanchez era at Old Trafford will be a frighteningly exciting one if the former Arsenal star’s Manchester United debut is anything to go by.

While the League Two side hardly represented the most formidable of opposition, Newport County’s draw with Tottenham shows how difficult these ties can be, even for England’s top clubs. But United surged to a 4-0 victory with aplomb and Sanchez was at the performance’s beating heart, providing the ingenuity the Red Devils have often lacked between the midfield and the attack this season.

Perhaps more crucially, United remain in the hunt for their likeliest chance of silverware this season after being eliminated from the League Cup by Bristol City.

Losers – Tottenham

Tottenham may have drawn with Newport County in the end as Harry Kane came to the rescue but the cost is arguably greater than a defeat for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The Lilywhites were due to play Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus in their next four games but the middle two contests will now have the Fourth Round replay with Newport County sandwiched in between as well.

That gives Tottenham three days less to prepare for the North London derby, not to mention creates a run of five matches in the space of 14 days, and although Pochettino will fancy his second string to beat Newport in the relative comfort of Wembley, it’s nonetheless a drain on his resources at the worst possible time. On three fronts – the top four battle, the FA Cup and the Champions League – the next fortnight will define Tottenham’s season.

Winner – Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez didn’t kick a ball during the Fourth Round, instead watching on from the bench as Leicester City ripped apart Peterborough in a 5-1 romping. But it’s no secret the Algerian playmaker has sought a big move in recent summers and the Foxes’ reluctance to let their talismanic star leave may have waned substantially over the course of Saturday’s early kickoff as 22-year-old Fousseni Diabate produced a stunning debut performance for his new club that was very much in the Mahrez mould.

Indeed, the Malian midfielder provided an abundance of creativity and netting prowess, scoring twice and conjuring up four chances, while continuously marauding through the Posh defence with the ball at feet. It’s still early days in his King Power Stadium career but with a successor seemingly at the club already, Leicester may feel far more open to bids for Mahrez when the summer transfer window comes around.

Winners – West Brom

West Brom appeared to have turned a corner under Alan Pardew some time ago and those subtle improvements reached something of a climax at Anfield on Saturday night as the Baggies scored three goals in a single game for only the second time this season, the other being against Accrington Stanley, to claim their third victory in four games across all competitions.

The performance was clear evidence of the much-needed positivity Pardew has brought to the Hawthorns and just rewards for the good work for he’s done since replacing Tony Pulis. And although Pardew probably doesn’t want an FA Cup run to deal with in the middle of a scrap for survival, that emphatic win at Anfield will give the Baggies huge confidence ahead of a run of fixtures that includes Southampton, Huddersfield and Watford in their next five games.

Loser – VAR

For the second round in a row, VAR appeared to cause almost as many problems as it solved in the FA Cup.

After Norwich and Chelsea’s replay at Stamford Bridge drew criticism for VAR’s failure to bring a challenge defender Timm Klose later admitted was a penalty to the attention of the referee, Liverpool and West Brom’s Fourth Round clash provided a glimpse of the opposite end of the spectrum, with official Craig Pawson turning to video technology three times in the first half to ironic chants of VAR from bemused spectators.

On the one hand, VAR did mean every big decision in the game was eventually the right one, but on the other, it slowed down the match considerably, dampening the atmosphere, and the lack of communication became increasingly frustrating.

Baggies gaffer Pardew even believes the stoppages in play lead to two hamstring injuries for his players, unveiling yet another unforeseen consequence of the new system.

Liverpool fans react as Daniel Sturridge suffers yet another injury

On loan Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge has suffered yet another injury setback after being substituted just three minutes into West Bromwich Albion’s clash with Chelsea on Monday night.

The 28-year-old limped off with a suspected hamstring injury that Baggies boss Alan Pardew reckons could keep him out for three weeks.

It’s a massive blow to both the player, who is looking to revive his career after moving on loan in January, and the club, who are fighting for their Premier League survival and need all their players fit and ready to fight for points.

According to injury tracking website PhysioRoom.com, it’s the 31st time that the striker has been injured since 2013 when he joined Liverpool, a huge number by any standard.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool fans have reacted strongly to the latest injury, many feeling upset for the player himself and others drawing the conclusion that the Reds need to get rid of him completely.

Fans believe James Milner doesn’t get enough credit after huge Liverpool win

Liverpool are almost guaranteed of a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a dominant 5-0 away to Porto on Wednesday night.

The Reds were in blistering form, inflicting Porto’s heaviest home defeat in European competition and becoming the first English side to score five goals in an away Champions League knockout match

Supporters had their ever-reliable attacking front three to thank for the victory with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all netting in the first leg triumph.

While they’ll steal the headlines, it was another Reds man that supporters felt should get plaudits after a dynamic midfield display that rolled back the years.

Veteran James Milner is having a remarkable season in the Champions League, creating six assists in just five matches, more than any other player in the competition.

Leeds fans hated Liam Cooper’s performance on Wednesday night

Leeds United stretched their winless run to ten matches on Wednesday night, this time failing to beat Derby County away from home in the English Championship.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side were well on their way to victory after goals from Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Ezgjan Alioski put them ahead in the match twice.

However, play-off hopefuls Derby found a way to equalise in injury time of each half, breaking Whites fans hearts and leaving them frustrated at another missed opportunity to pick up three points.

Much of the criticism was aimed at their defence, with centre-back Liam Cooper on the receiving end. The 26-year-old failed to deal with headers all evening and his attempted clearance led directly to Derby’s first equaliser.

Supporters are now calling for him to be dropped as Paul Heckinbottom searches for a starting eleven he can trust.

Leeds fans keen for Mateusz Klich to get another chance next season

Leeds United midfieder Mateusz Klich was sent out on loan to FC Utrecht during the January transfer window after falling out of favour under former boss Thomas Christiansen, but now Whites fans have demanded that he is given a second chance next season after he returns from the Netherlands.

The Yorkshire outfit signed the 27-year-old on a three-year deal from FC Twente last summer, but he found it difficult to break into the starting XI under Christiansen and made just 10 appearances in all competitions before returning to Holland last month.

The Elland Road faithful obviously still feel he has a future with the Championship club though, and it is no surprise given he showed glimpses of the quality he has during the League Cup win against Burnley back in September.

Leeds supporters were quick to have their say on Klich via social media following another impressive performance from the Poland international for Utrecht over the weekend, and while one said “he’s got genuine quality”, another said “proper feel like Klich deserves a chance next season”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

How Newcastle must line up when they face Southampton on Saturday

Newcastle United will look to significantly boost their Premier League survival chances when they host fellow strugglers Southampton in a potentially season-defining clash for both clubs at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Magpies missed the chance to increase the gap between them and the relegation zone when they surrendered a two-goal lead in the last 10 minutes to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last month, and they followed that up with a 2-0 defeat against a free-scoring Liverpool side at Anfield last weekend.

That result left the Tyneside outfit two points above the bottom three, and they remain in real danger of suffering an immediate return to the Championship as they lie just two points above both 18th-placed Crystal Palace and 19th-placed Stoke City, with their fans believing this is the first of two fixtures that will decide their fate.

Their opponents this weekend are one point above those two clubs and one point adrift of Rafa Benitez’s side, and the Spaniard will certainly take some solace from the fact that the south coast outfit have only won two of their 13 top flight matches on the road during the current campaign.

Newcastle do have the third worst record on their own turf this term though, and Benitez will know that they need to improve that and start picking up wins if they are to stay up, with a draw at home to Saints not really good enough.

The 57-year-old Toon boss went with an unfamiliar 5-4-1 system at Anfield last weekend, and the former Liverpool chief will likely revert to one of his more popular formations for this fixture.

Benitez made three changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Bournemouth for the game against Liverpool last time out, and he will be considering making some more against Saints in what is such an important clash.

Here is how Newcastle must line up against Southampton on Saturday, ahead of Martin Dubravka in goal…

Defence

Aside from when he went with three central defenders and two wing-backs at Anfield last weekend, Benitez has had a relatively settled back four of DeAndre Yedlin, captain Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett in recent weeks, and there is no reason why they won’t be the quartet that lines up against Southampton.

Their Spanish boss should revert to a more familiar four-man defence for the visit of Saints in what is a such a huge six-pointer for both clubs, and the 57-year-old will be hoping that as well as being a leader at the back, Lascelles can try and add to his tally of three Premier League goals this season with the team as a whole only netting 27 in their 29 top flight fixtures.

Midfield

Kenedy and Yedlin lined up as wing-backs against Liverpool with Mo Diame and Mikel Merino – in for the injured Jonjo Shelvey – in the middle of the park, and Benitez should look to change things up for the visit of Southampton.

Kenedy was a little bit anonymous at Anfield and was criticised by the fans for his display, but if his Spanish manager reverts back to a four-man midfield, then he should start on the left because of his defensive and attacking abilities.

Meanwhile, Matt Ritchie should come in on the right to replace Christian Atsu – who played on that wing last weekend – with the Scotland international scoring the winning goal against Manchester United at St James’ Park last month.

Diame is pretty much undroppable in the middle right now and if Shelvey is 100% fit – he was pictured back in training on Thursday – he must replace Merino.

Attack

Benitez played Atsu and Jacob Murphy on the wings and Dwight Gayle up top on his own at Anfield, and it is no surprise that they didn’t really threaten too much in the final third.

The Spanish boss needs to be more attacking at home against Southampton this weekend, and while Joselu hasn’t always been a favourite among the St James’ Park faithful, he could be the man they need in the starting XI against the south coast outfit.

While Saints centre-backs Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens are decent with the ball at their feet, they have sometimes struggled aerially meaning the 6ft 4in Joselu could cause them big problems, playing alongside Gayle who has hit some goalscoring form.

Three reasons Everton must forget Wilshere and target Laurent Koscielny instead

Everton have reportedly already made an offer to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who fears that he will be forced to quit the club this summer.

The 26-year-old is desperate to stay at the Emirates Stadium when his contract expires at the end of the season, although he isn’t happy with the reduced terms he has been offered and doesn’t believe the club are showing the same commitment that he is.

The Mirror says that the north London outfit are unwilling to back down after offering the England international a deal that will see him take a £20,000-a-week pay cut, and the Toffees are ready to swoop in having already given the player their own offer.

There could be more significant changes during this summer’s transfer window for the Merseyside outfit following a disappointing season, with players that were brought in last summer like Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez failing to make an impression.

While midfield could be an area the club look at – whether the unpopular Sam Allardyce keeps his job or not – they are also likely improve their central defensive options, too.

Arsenal vice-captain Laurent Koscielny should be a player on their radar, although some would feel it would be an ambitious move to try and bring the France international to Goodison Park.

Here are three reasons Everton must forget Wilshere and target an impressive move for the 32-year-old centre-back instead…

While Koscielny has been a regular once again for Arsenal this season – aside from in the group stages of the Europa League and when he has been injured – you can’t help but feel that his time in the XI is coming to an end.

If Arsene Wenger leaves this summer a new manager is likely to want to have a big squad overhaul, and the likes of Koscielny may well be at risk with the new boss likely to bring in at least one new centre-back – and perhaps two – given some of the north London outfit’s disappointing displays this season.

The France international could be one of those shown the exit door with two years remaining on his contract, and Everton should move quickly to snap him up if that is the case.

The Merseyside outfit have really struggled from a defensive point of view this term and only four Premier League teams – Stoke City, West Ham United, Huddersfield Town and Watford – have conceded more than their tally of 50 goals in 31 top flight matches this season.

Everton need to add a top-class centre-back to their ranks with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams – who has been slaughtered by Toffees fans following his latest comments about a disappointing campaign – likely to go, they need an experienced player to feature alongside the likes of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate at the heart of the back four.

Koscielny would certainly match both of those requirements.

Koscielny may be turning 33 years of age in September, but there is no doubt that he would bring a lot of quality to the Everton backline.

The experience he has of playing in the Premier League, the Champions League and now the Europa League would be hugely beneficial for the ambitious Merseyside outfit, while he also has 50 France caps to his name.

The centre-back isn’t afraid to put his body on the line for his team in his own box – and is a threat in the opposition penalty area too – while the fact that he is Arsenal’s vice-captain shows the leadership skills that he has.

Leeds fans are split on Heckingbottom’s future

Leeds fans have been discussing the future of Paul Heckingbottom, and it seems like a pretty even split amongst fans. When Paul Heckingbottom replaced Thomas Christiansen in February, fans were hopeful the ex-Barnsley man could get their playoff push back on track.Heckingbottom’s arrival has had fair from the desired effect though, and the side have won just twice since he took over. In fact, the 40 year-old is on track for the worst win percentage in Leeds managerial history.Still, some fans are sympathetic for the manager, pointing to the poor recruitment in January and the poor individual performances from players as the primary reasons for this season’s capitulation.[ad_pod ]Defensive errors seem to be far too prevalent for Leeds at the moment, but many of them are individual mistakes rather than system errors, like losing a man at a corner. The fine margins of Championship football were on display yet again in the 2-0 loss to Fulham on Tuesday, with some fans pointing to Caleb Ekuban’s crucial miss as yet another example of the players letting the manager down.Fans have been discussing who to blame for the club’s torrid run of form on Twitter, and some of the best reactions can be found below…

Newcastle takeover would allow Benitez to move club onto next level

Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover of Newcastle United is back on the cards after talks resumed between the two parties, as per the Mirror.

The conversation broke down earlier this year but if the Mike Ashley era at Newcastle came to an end, the increased investment would surely allow Rafa Benitez to make the club a sustained Premier League force again.

What’s the story, then?

The talks reportedly broke down because of Ashley’s concerns about a potential £100m loss if Newcastle were relegated but now that the club are all but safe after Saturday’s 2-1 win at Europa League chasers Leicester City, dialogue has resumed.

Benitez has felt his hands were tied by Ashley’s unwillingness to invest and he feels that is the reason that Newcastle have struggled this season.

Therefore, a takeover would reportedly please the Spanish manager, who would have been considering his future if Ashley was still the club’s owner at the end of the season.

Rafa needs money to spend

Benitez was, ironically, allowed to invest more heavily in his side to get out of the Championship than he has been allowed to this season.

That is because he had assets such as Moussa Sissoko and Gigi Wijnaldum to sell, which raised the funds for an assault on the second tier, which they duly won.

Despite the promotion windfall, the pursestrings have remained tight in the North East this season, which has left Benitez to face the Premier League with a largely Championship standard team.

He has that side safe and reasonably comfortably, with an organised style of play but the takeover would allow him to go and get the players he really wants. That could make Newcastle a solid Premier League outfit again and allow the former Liverpool boss to do himself justice.

Liverpool fans absolutely loved Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance on Saturday

Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 19 English Premier League matches at home after securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.

That’s the longest active unbeaten streak at home in the competition and it’s a win that solidifies their status as a top four team in the top-flight this term.

With their league form ticking along nicely and European honours to play for, it’s all set to be an exciting end to the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side and their supporters.

Beyond goalscorers Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino against the Cherries, at the heart of the winning performance was midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who was again superb throughout the 90 minutes.

Fans were quick to praise the former Arsenal man for another impressive display with many believing he is simply getting better and better all the time.

His overall performance was capped off nicely with an assist for Firmino’s effort in the closing moments of the game.
