Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood continue build-up to Australia return

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will continue their build-up to a return to international action by playing for the ACT Comets this week as Australia try to get into a position to be able to field their strongest pace attack for the first time since their meltdown in South Africa. The pair will take the field against Western Australia in a Futures League match at Chisholm Oval in Canberra from Monday having both gained good workloads last week in a previous Futures League match where they each sent down 22 overs.Cummins and Hazlewood have not played for Australia since the final Test of the controversial series earlier this year with both recovering from back injuries which kept them out of the series against Pakistan in the UAE.Their returns to action have been carefully managed ahead of a busy home summer which begins with the one-day series against South Africa before the arrival of India for a full tour followed by a short visit from Sri Lanka in January.Last month Hazlewood was named joint vice-captain of the Test side alongside Mitchell Marsh. If they are both passed fit – and selected – for the ODIs against South Africa, starting in Perth on November 4, there is a chance Australia will be able to reunite their first-choice pace attack if Mitchell Starc’s hamstring niggle picked up in Abu Dhabi does not prove serious.Starc had a scan following the conclusion of the second Test – where he only bowled seven overs in the second innings – and though he has been retained in the T20 squad he is unlikely to be risked.

Sarah Taylor to miss World T20 with anxiety condition

Mutual decision reached with England management after tough winter schedule is taken into account

Sarah Taylor pulled off a sensational stumping•Getty Images

Sarah Taylor, the England wicketkeeper, will miss the Women’s World T20 in the Caribbean in November due to the ongoing treatment of the anxiety issue that has caused her to take regular time away from the game in recent seasons.Taylor, who played a key role in England’s World Cup victory in 2017, was in prime form with the bat and behind the stumps this season. On the international front, she helped ensure a clean sweep of trophies in England’s series against New Zealand and South Africa, including a matchwinning century against South Africa at Hove in June. Domestically, she was an integral member of the Surrey Stars team that claimed victory in the Kia Super League Final.Perhaps the highlight of Taylor’s summer’s work, however – certainly in terms of the viral clips that circulated on social media – was her series of remarkable leg-side stumpings for England, feats of athleticism which confirmed that, pound for pound, she is among the most talented cricketers of her generation, male or female. However, Taylor’s availability for England has been carefully managed ever since she took a year out of the sport in the wake of the last World T20 in India in 2016. And, having missed the subsequent tour of India earlier this year, a “mutual decision” has been reached that she should sit out this winter’s engagements too.”Since the end of the summer Sarah hasn’t been able to train fully with the squad due to not being as fit as she would want to be from a psychological point of view,” England’s head coach, Mark Robinson, said.”At the moment she isn’t in a place where we would all be comfortable that the demanding training, playing and travel schedule wouldn’t potentially put her backwards and make her road to full recovery longer.”It’s important we see mental health in a similar way to a player with a physical injury. You wouldn’t risk a player if you felt that playing them with an injury would increase the chances of them being out for a long time or the issue even becoming career-threatening.”Sarah will continue to train at Loughborough at a pace more suited to where she is right now with a view to hopefully being fully fit in the new year. All of our players’ health and well-being is the most important thing and we must never lose sight of that in the intense and demanding world of professional sport.”Either way, her absence from England duty is a blow, as Heather Knight’s team look to emulate the efforts of their predecessors in 2009, who managed to add the World T20 title to the World Cup that they had claimed earlier in the same year.England are due to announce their squad on October 4, with Amy Jones now expected to be the frontrunner for the wicketkeeping role.

"Exciting" – Pundit reacts as Spurs want to sign "creative" Maddison cover

Pundit Carlton Palmer has had his say on a reported Tottenham transfer target as sporting director Johan Lange apparently chases cover for injured star James Maddison.

Spurs could be eyeing Maddison alternatives

Reports in the last fortnight have suggested that Spurs and manager Ange Postecoglou may well be keen on signing an alternative to Maddison. The England star's absence has exposed a lack of creativity in midfield when he's unavailable, with defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg filling in for him against Wolves in a 2-1 defeat prior to the international break.

Hojbjerg, playing in a more advanced role, couldn't quite fill the void left by Maddison. The 26-year-old has starred since joining from Leicester City for £40 million, and while he's expected back in early 2024, Spurs may need to look at alternatives given just how weak they look in the playmaker role when he can't contribute.

Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson is a target for Spurs in this regard, as the Serie A side's second striker is capable of playing in Maddison's role when required. Tottenham also like Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who has impressed with three goals and an assist in 16 Championship starts this season.

The younger brother of Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, Sunderland's young star appears to be representing the family name excellently as he turns heads for the Black Cats.

Palmer thrilled by Spurs links to Bellingham

Speaking to Football League World, former England international Palmer has heaped praise on Bellingham whilst giving a lowdown on him as a player.

"Tottenham are among numerous clubs keeping an eye on the in-form younger brother of Jude Bellingham, Jobe at Sunderland, Jobe made the move to Sunderland from Birmingham in the summer and he has made a big impression scoring three goals and one assist so far this season, becoming a real important player for Tony Mowbray's team," said Palmer.

"Bellingham, who is a versatile attacker has come on Spurs' radar due to the injury to their talisman (James) Maddison, they are on the lookout for a creative player and Bellingham could provide cover as he would be an exciting element of home-grown talent."

However, commenting further on the teenage talent, he believes that a move in the summer would be more realistic than in January.

"I think Sunderland are unlikely to let Jobe leave in January with the impending departure of Jack Clarke, but next summer would be a realistic possibility for Jobe to leave for a bigger club in the Premier League or Europe."

The midfielder signed for Sunderland from Birmingham City in the summer of 2023, where he made 22 second-tier appearances for the Blues over the 22/23 season before his switch to the Stadium of Light. It's a pretty tall order for Bellingham to follow in the footsteps of his brother, who is now both a star at Real Madrid and for the England national team under Gareth Southgate.

Jobe could be set for his own upward trajectory, though, especially if Postecoglou opts to sign him in 2024.

Awoniyi replacement found in Nottingham Forest’s dream starting XI after Jan

Nottingham Forest have endured a tricky spell in the Premier League with only one win in their last eight matches.

Given this wretched run of form, the Reds can consider themselves lucky to have an eight-point comfort blanket separating them from 18th-place Sheffield United.

With quality seriously lacking at the bottom of the table, particularly from all three promoted sides, Forest should survive comfortably and avoid falling victim to second-season syndrome.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

However, Steve Cooper's side will have aspirations of being more than just perennial top-flight survivors and will want to start making inroads towards the league's top half.

That said, Forest could perform surgery on their squad by adding more quality additions in the transfer window and the rumours circulating suggest the club could be busy once more.

Here's how a Nottingham Forest starting XI could look at the end of January…

1 GK – Odysseas Vlachodimos

Forest captured Vlachidomos from Portuguese giants Benfica and he's recently stolen the number one jersey from Matt Turner, who started their first ten Premier League matches.

The Greek goliath has impressed across his first two starts, racking up an impressive six saves from shots inside the box and recording the highest average Sofascore rating in the Reds squad (7.35). If the 29-year-old continues this form, Turner will struggle to earn his spot back.

2 RB – Ola Aina

An athletic and versatile defender, Aina moved to the club this summer after departing Serie A side Torino. The former Chelsea academy graduate has endeared himself in fine fashion to the City Ground faithful, terrorising the opposition with his explosive pace and power while offering excellent output down the right flank. His venomous strike in the 2-0 victory over Aston Villa showcased his capabilities as an attacking wing-back.

3 CB – Murillo

Murillo

Cooper dipped into the South American market in the summer to prise talented centre-back Murillo away from Brazilian giants Corinthians. He's since established himself as a warrior at the heart of the Forest defence in recent weeks, winning 66% of his ground duels and recovering five balls per game. The 21-year-old has also showcased his ability with the ball at his feet, averaging 82% pass completion and completing 90% of his successful dribbles – 1.2 per game.

4 CB – Nino

Nino

According to recent reports, Forest are going back to Brazil this January to capture the highly-rated Fluminense centre-back Nino, who would be an excellent partner for Murillo. The report states that the 26-year-old could cost around £6m and that looks like a snip for someone who helped his side win the Copa Libertadores earlier this month and was also called up to the Brazil squad.

If that doesn't underline his talents, the fact that the 6 foot 2 titan has recorded an accurate pass completion of 91% and recovered four balls per game in 2023 probably will.

5 LB – Zaidu Sanusi

Whilst Harry Toffolo is currently performing admirably in the left-back position, Cooper could find a long-term replacement by signing Zaidu Sanusi from Porto.

The Reds were reportedly preparing a bid for the title-winning 26-year-old in the summer, though, a move never materialised further than that. If the club were to reignite their interest in the Nigerian, they'd be acquiring a talented gem who ranked in the top 13% for non-penalty goals and the top 14% for interceptions per 90 in the Champions League last term.

6 CM – Orel Mangala

Mangala is a pressing machine who does a lot of work in Forest's midfield that often goes unnoticed. In the Premier League this term, he ranks in the top 13% among his positional peers for interceptions per 90 while averaging an 88% pass completion per game.

This implies that he's adept at closing down space to win possession back and supply his teammates with quality on the ball.

7 CM – Nicolas Dominguez

When Forest managed to prise Bologna captain Dominguez away from the Serie A in the summer, they knew they were getting an exceptional midfielder who would provide an abundance of quality in central areas.

Dubbed by Jamie Redknapp as the Reds' "best player" in the draw against Brentford, the all-action Argentine has shown his class across his seven matches this term, placing within the top 5% across Europe's top five leagues for tackles in the past year and recording an exceptional 4.6 balls recovered per game.

8 CM – Ibrahim Sangare

PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

A £30m acquisition from PSV on deadline day, Sangare has slotted into the Forest midfield this term like a glove and instantly showcased his class as a destructive ball-winner and an incredible ball carrier.

Across eight starts in the Premier League, the Ivory Coast international, who was once likened to Michael Essien by African journalist Alpha Balde, has done that comparison justice by putting in physically domineering performances. He's recorded the second-most tackles in the Reds squad (3.1), behind only Dominguez, and has driven his side forward with 50% completed dribbles per game.

9 RW – Morgan Gibbs-White

Forest's master creator and the one who can unlock defences in the blink of an eye, Morgan Gibbs-White has predominantly played as a wide playmaker this term but likes to drift inside and dictate play centrally.

The Englishman is one of the first names on the team sheet for Cooper and that is mainly down to the quality he provides in possession. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man has supplied the second most accurate long balls (2.2), the most key passes (1.8) and the second most big chances created (3) in the squad.

10 LW – Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga.

Once Callum Hudson-Odoi makes a return to action, competition for places is strong on the left flank, but it'll take a lot to dislodge Anthony Elanga.

After arriving from Manchester United in the summer, the Englishman has instantly adapted to his new surroundings, tearing through defences with his electrifying pace and fleet-footed dribbling. He's also supplied end product, too, scoring two and supplying three assists in 13 matches, including the winner against Chelsea in September.

Pujara retires hurt because of 'stiff neck'

Uthappa sidelined for ‘six to eight weeks’, while India A fast bowlers asked to rest ahead of the New Zealand tour

Pujara retires hurt because of ‘stiff neck’
A stiff neck had Cheteshwar Pujara retire hurt midway through the opening day of Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy opener against Chhattisgarh in Rajkot. Pujara had complained of discomfort in the morning because he was trying to bat with an open stance but walked in to bat at his usual No. 3 position. He had faced 64 deliveries for his 30 not out when he walked off after consulting the team physio. Shitanshu Kotak, the Saurashtra coach, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that there was “nothing to worry” and the move to have him retire hurt was precautionary, keeping immediate future in mind. “He will be ready to bat on Friday, if required.” With India’s Test tour of Australia slated to begin only in the first week of December, Pujara has made himself available for at least the first two round of the season.India A fast bowlers asked to rest
Mindful of managing players’ workloads and keeping them fresh, the selectors have asked the fast bowlers of the New Zealand-bound India A squad to skip the first round of the Ranji Trophy. This meant Hyderabad, defending champions Vidarbha, and Rajasthan were without the services of Mohammad Siraj, Rajneesh Gurbani and Deepak Chahar respectively. MSK Prasad’s request to the state associations didn’t affect Navdeep Saini, however, as Delhi are slated to play their first game on November 12.While the request was to rest only the fast bowlers, a number of other India A regulars, like Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer, too didn’t take part in the opening round. M Vijay was included in Tamil Nadu’s XI alongside R Ashwin, while Hanuma Vihari and Parthiv Patel, who have been selected for the Test tour of Australia, also walked out to lead Andhra and Gujarat respectively.India A is slated to leave for New Zealand on November 9, with the first of three four-day matches scheduled to begin on November 16 at Bay Oval in Tauranga.Uthappa likely to sit out for ‘four to six weeks’
Robin Uthappa, the Saurashtra batsman, is likely to be unavailable for the group stages because of an ankle injury. Uthappa underwent surgery in England last week and has been advised rest for six to eight weeks according to Kotak: “He is a quality player who will add value to any side, we won’t rush him in. Even if he is back for the second phase, his inclusion will be very valuable.”Uthappa’s signing for a second season with Saurashtra wasn’t a given until two months ago, as he was keen to return to Karnataka. However, with Karnataka opting for a new coaching staff and focusing on youth, Uthappa didn’t find a favourable response.

– Finalmente voltamos a ganhar.

Renshaw impresses in battle for Test opening berth

Queensland enjoyed a solid opening day against Western Australia with Charlie Hemphrey continuing his good form

Alex Malcolm03-Nov-2018A patient 89 from Test hopeful Matt Renshaw underpinned a solid opening day for Queensland against Western Australia at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.Renshaw batted for four hours and faced 215 deliveries in his first half-century of the Shield season before Matt Kelly trapped him lbw from around the wicket with a ball that appeared to keep a fraction low.The Bulls laid a strong platform after winning the toss. Renshaw and Joe Burns put on a 90-run opening stand. Burns fell one short of a half-century, caught behind attempting a cut shot off Jhye Richardson. Marnus Labuschagne fell to a similar stroke from the same bowler guiding a ball to Josh Philippe in the gully for just 11.Renshaw and Charlie Hemphrey put on 77 before the opener fell in the 68th over. Sam Heazlett made just 21, clean bowled by the part-time offspin of Will Bosisto late in the day.Hemphrey backed up his fighting 87 in last week’s draw with South Australia with another half-century. He moved to 68 not out at stumps with 10 fours and a six. Jack Wildermuth remained 16 not out. While the Warriors did not make significant inroads they did keep the scoring under three runs per over on a fairly benign surface.

The Olympic football tournament draw took place last month and it produced some incredible groups on the women's side in particular, none more headline-grabbing than that which pooled the USWNT with Germany and Australia. The fourth and final team in the group was yet to be confirmed at that point though, with the final qualifiers in Africa scheduled for early April.

But the USWNT knew it would be facing either Zambia or Morocco, the latter now under the charge of Vilda, the controversial coach who led Spain to World Cup glory last year.

However, he won't be adding an Olympic gold to that title anytime soon as Zambia emerged victorious in the two-legged affair, beating Morocco in extra time in the second leg in Rabat, despite losing the first leg 2-1 on home soil, to join the USWNT's Olympic group.

DID YOU KNOW?

Zambia was not the only nation to secure its place in the Olympic women's football tournament on Tuesday either. There was also a spot up for grabs in the group with Spain, Brazil and Japan and that has been claimed by Nigeria, who beat South Africa 1-0 in the other two-legged play-off.
