Thisara Perera rues another spate of Sri Lankan dropped catches

The 10-ball period in which Sri Lanka dropped three catches – all of them off England top-scorer Jason Roy – was when the hosts lost the one-off T20I in Colombo, according to captain Thisara Perera. Roy was spilled in the deep three times, and the first two chances off the bowling of Lakshan Sandakan were particularly straightforward. He would make 34 runs off 11 balls after that first reprieve.Although in the recent ODI series, Sri Lanka had been half-decent in the field, they have in general caught woefully over the past two years, particularly in limited-overs cricket. Three different head coaches – Graham Ford, Nic Pothas and now Chandika Hathurusingha – have attempted to turn Sri Lanka’s fielding around, but have not been decisive in correcting the malaise.”It’s hard to keep saying every time that when we drop catches, we lose the game. But that was the most important thing in today’s game also,” said Thisara. “That was a bad patch for us. It’s the batsmen that scored the most runs for them whom we reprieved. We could have kept them to under 160 if we took those three or four catches.”The other definitive period of the game, for Thisara, was the first three overs of Sri Lanka’s chase, when Joe Denly dismissed both the openers, and had the hosts 16 for 2.”We also gave away two wickets in the first few overs, and lost a lot of momentum there. If we had kept those wickets in hand, we might have been able to chase 188, especially given the outfield was a little greasy.”Later in the chase, Adil Rashid would effectively seal the match for England, with a four-over spell that claimed three wickets and conceded only 11 runs. Though Thisara is not a part of the Test set-up, he felt Rashid was hitting ominous form just ahead of the Tests.”Moeen Ali and Rashid are bowling really well. They are bowling good lengths, which is the main thing. It will be really difficult for us in the matches coming up as well. They are going well in Asia.”

Journalist drops concerning new Sandro Tonali update at Newcastle

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months, but another setback has now potentially emerged, according to an update from journalist Craig Hope.

Sandro Tonali ban

The Magpies signed the Italian from Serie A giants AC Milan during the summer transfer window, in what looked like a fantastic piece of business by the club.

Tonali had shone in his homeland, helping Milan reach the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, and was seen as someone who could take Eddie Howe's side to the next level.

After a dream debut that saw the 23-year-old score in a 5-1 win at home to Aston Villa in the league, disaster has struck in recent weeks with the news that Tonali has received a 10-month ban from football for breaching betting rules during his time as a Milan player.

It is a massive blow for Howe and anyone associated with Newcastle, and immediately hurts their chances of going far in the Champions League, as well as qualifying for the competition again next season – but now another potential setback has emerged regarding the situation.

Fresh Sandro Tonali blow

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Hope explained that Tonali may have broken betting rules since moving to Newcastle, which is contrary to earlier reports:

"Exclusive: The Football Association are now investigating whether Sandro Tonali broke betting rules AFTER his £52m move to Newcastle in July. The player is currently banned for 10 months for illegal gambling activity in Italy."

In his article for The Daily Mail itself, Hope goes on to add that the Italy international "continued to bet on football while under their jurisdiction", and that if this is proved to be the case, Tonali "could be subject to further sanction" from the FA.

This is a very worrying development from a Newcastle perspective considering they are already without the young midfielder for the rest of the season, not to mention what a bitter blow it is for the player himself, who will also miss Euro 2024 with Italy.

This fresh development has the potential to lead to a further ban, as Tonali could be found guilty of continuing to bet after he made the move from Milan to Newcastle, which doesn't bear thinking about.

What he cannot afford to do is become too big a distraction for the Magpies on the pitch at a time when their form has been a little hit-and-miss.

A good run of results ended recently with a 1-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund, which could be a damaging Champions League result, while their 2-2 draw away to Wolves in the Premier League twice saw Howe's men fail to hold onto a lead. That being said, the 3-0 win at Manchester United in the EFL Cup more than steadied the ship, though they need to retain that level moving forward.

The hope is that nothing new comes from this latest Tonali development and that his 10-month ban ends up being the worst-case scenario, but it is clear that a replacement is needed in January, with Newcastle linked with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante, among others.

Everton must start their "catalyst" over Danjuma against Brighton

Everton are back in action this afternoon, as the Blues welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Goodison Park on match day 11 of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

It has been a week of highs for Sean Dyche’s side, who secured a 1-0 away win against West Ham United last time out in the league, with their form added to midweek in knocking Burnley out of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 3-0 victory at Goodison.

An even bigger challenge awaits this afternoon in the form of Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls, who will be desperate to win after hitting a sticky patch of form.

Everton team news vs Brighton

Having won three of their previous five fixtures, Everton will be hopeful to continue their impressive run, and prolong Brighton’s woes in the league.

After an electrifying start to the campaign, De Zerbi’s side are without a win in their last four Premier League games, giving Dyche added motivation to keep his squad pushing up the table.

With reference to team news, there are no new injuries to report, with the only change in the squad expected to be the return of Ashley Young following his one-match suspension.

Dyche also relayed in his pre-match press conference that Seamus Coleman is edging closer to fitness after his horrific knee injury sustained six months ago, while Dele and Andre Gomes remain a distance away from being match fit.

Following the comprehensive win against Burnley on Wednesday night, Dyche may opt to make some changes, with one name a must-pick for the starting XI after being benched against the Clarets.

The stats that suggest Abdoulaye Doucoure must start against Brighton

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure started on the bench in midweek, giving Arnaut Danjuma a chance to show his worth away from the Premier League.

While the Villarreal loanee provides an encouraging threat in the final third, he is almost certainly in line to be restored to the bench this afternoon to allow the 30-year-old to reclaim his spot.

Danjuma played 68 minutes against Burnley and failed to register a single effort on goal, to go along with 17 touches and one key pass, as he was unable to make a significant impact on the match, which is why he could be instantly ditched.

In playing behind the striker, Doucoure has shown how vital he is to the Toffees this term, showcasing his playmaking and goal scoring qualities, as well as his ability to eliminate danger in midfield.

With three Premier League goals so far, the Mali international is Dyche’s joint-top scorer, level with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, highlighting his proficiency in front of goal.

The former Watford ace also averages an impressive 1.6 key passes per game this term, as well as portraying his combative side with 1.7 tackles averaged in the midfield, via WhoScored.

These statistics suggest that Doucoure has the potential to break down the Seagulls with his attacking prowess, as a scorer and a creator, in a way that Danjuma was unable to against Burnley.

Considering the threat that Brighton can exert when at their best, Dyche must restore the Malian to the starting XI, as the Dutch forward continues to find his feet in England.

Once lauded as Everton’s “catalyst” by the manager, Doucoure will hope to cap off an already memorable week with a result this afternoon, after signing a contract extension to 2025 on Friday.

5 midfielders Newcastle could sign instead of Ruben Neves this January

Newcastle United have been left threadbare after an injury crisis, which could see up to 11 first-team players ruled out heading into Saturday's match against Chelsea.

Read more: Latest Newcastle injury news

As such, Eddie Howe will be keen to strengthen his ranks come January, particularly in midfield, where Sandro Tonali has left a huge void after picking up a 10-month suspension.

Al-Hilal's Rúben Neves had been mooted as a potential replacement for the Italian, but The Atheltic recently confirmed that he is expected to remain in Saudi Arabia, at least until the end of the season.

Although, the recent Premier League vote on a loan ban between associated clubs failed, so technically there is still a possibility.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has taken a look at five midfielders Newcastle could sign in January.

Scott McTominay – Manchester United

West Ham could provide competition for his signature

Scott McTominay has been linked with a move to the North East club in the past and the Mirror ran a report in October claiming that he is among a four-man shortlist for the January transfer window.

The towering midfielder has netted three times in nine league outings this season and has been in prolific goalscoring form for Scotland, scoring seven goals in Euro qualifying.

McTominay was subjected to a bid from West Ham United in the summer and the Hammers could return with a second proposal this winter.

That would only drive the price up for the Magpies which could force them to explore other midfield alternatives…

Kalvin Phillips – Manchester City

The 27-year-old is eager to find regular football

According to ESPN, Newcastle are lining up a proposal for out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is also being monitored by European powerhouses Bayern Munich and Juventus.

The England international has played just 89 minutes of Premier League football this term and is eager to find regular opportunities ahead of the Euros next summer.

It remains to be seen whether any forthcoming deal will be a permanent or loan, though, City will likely want to recoup as much of the £42m they outlaid as possible.

Amadou Onana – Everton

The former Lille midfielder could be sold to ease financial pressures

As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle United have previously had Everton midfielder Amadou Onana on their transfer shortlist and could materialise their interest in January given Everton's financial position.

The Toffees have recently been deducted 10 points and could face further punishment with Leeds United, Leicester City and Burnley all set to sue the Merseyside club.

One of Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite will likely depart in the next year to ease the club's financial concerns which could allow the Magpies to land the Belgian international's signature at a discounted price.

Though, TEAMtalk claim Everton remain well-positioned to keep hold of their prized assets and won't accept any cut-price offers.

João Palhinha – Fulham

The former Sporting midfielder came close to a summer exit

Fulham's João Palhinha was another midfielder namechecked in The Athletic's October report, though, the publication did note that the deal is 'potentially unrealistic'.

Bayern Munich were close to signing the 23-cap Portugal international for a reported £55m in the summer before the deal collapsed.

The Cottagers will clearly want a similar fee should they sanction a January exit, meaning the Tynesiders will have to outlay a sizable fee, which is perhaps non-viable.

The 28-year-old is under contract until June 2028.

André Almeida – Valencia

The Portugal youth international impressed against England's Under-21s

The Athletic further notes that Valencia's André Almeida could be targetted this winter, with the Spanish outfit potentially in need of raising cash.

The 23-year-old has represented Portugal at every age level and impressed against England in the Under-21 European Championships quarter-final in the summer.

He is thought to be worth around £20m, which could be a more feasible option than some of the aforementioned names. Despite Newcastle's significant wealth, they must operate shrewdly in the market with Financial Fair Play looming.

After the disappointing loss, the Gunners boss explained that he was forced to substitute Odegaard as the midfielder suffered a leg injury. He further stated that the team now need to show character and bounce back from the setback if they still want to win the title.

WHAT MIKEL ARTETA SAID

Speaking to right after the match, the Spaniard explained his decision to change Odegaard as he said: "He had a leg issue, that's why [he was taken off]."

In the post-match press conference, Arteta added: "We can't control [Manchester City]. What we can control is that when we have the run we had when you win, win, win, win, it's easy. The moment is now. After this blow, it's how we react.

"We have the best opportunity to react against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The team has to show it. If you want to win, you have to overcome these situations. With the games we had, this was going to happen. It is now about how we react. This is in our control."

Ravi Shastri a yes-man? 'Most bizarre', says Virat Kohli

After an “untenable” relationship that led to Anil Kumble’s resignation as head coach, Virat Kohli says he’s been working with a coach who has said “no” to him more than anyone else in Indian cricket. To give context to Kohli comments, he was asked ahead of the India’s departure for Australia whether Ravi Shastri merely said “yes” to everything Kohli said. The captain responded by saying it was “the most bizarre thing” he had ever heard.”About saying ‘yes’ all the time, that is the most bizarre thing I have heard,” Kohli said. “I don’t think there’s anyone who has said no to me more than him in Indian cricket. Honestly, because he’s one guy I can speak to and get an honest opinion and he’ll tell me something that if it doesn’t need to be done, it doesn’t need to be done. I’ve made more changes to my game listening to him than anyone else in the past.”These are very personal things that happen within the team environment and things that conveniently need to be put out there are put out there, and we’re not going to take a banner and say, ‘no, this is what happens in the Indian team’. As long as our heart is clear and our intent is right, we just want to keep moving forward.”Reports and a public image of Shastri and Kohli hardly differing on anything took shape following Shastri’s appointment as head coach in July last year. At the time, Kumble said he was informed by the BCCI that “the captain had reservations with my style and about my continuing as head coach”. Shastri had incidentally been team director just before Kumble was appointed in 2016, despite Shastri also applying for the job.Soon after Shastri took over as coach in 2017, he first made it clear the captain was going to be the boss. When asked about what exactly Shastri brought “to the table strategically or by motivation” as coach, Kohli jumped to his defence, saying he had pulled many players out of shells when they had been in poor form.”The contribution he has brought to the table ever since we started building this team is making people believe that they belong to this level,” Kohli said. “I can vouch for it because at a time when we all went through a really difficult time in England in 2014…for me to be able to come out of that shell [and] a lot of other players, like Shikhar [Dhawan] in the 2015 World Cup, he can vouch for that as well…you know to get the best out of players, I think he’s been the most important factor.”Man management is the most important thing at the level at which we play. I think a lot of people think that we don’t understand what needs to be done and someone needs to literally tell you where the bat needs to come from, where the head has to be. I think we’ve learnt those things enough, it’s the man management which Ravi has done brilliantly for the time that he’s been with the team.”About the other factors, look, everyone has their opinion on things, and they are absolutely free and entitled to voice their opinion, but we can’t stop living life, we cannot stop doing things that we feel are organic. Nothing is made up here, nothing is created or happening in a fake way. Everyone has a different personality, if someone’s personality doesn’t fall into someone else comfort zone, then that becomes a problem.”We’re all given a responsibility and we’re doing it to the best of our abilities. The only motive is to take Indian cricket forward. And if someone can say otherwise about the progress of the team, then that’s a very personal point of view because we all feel that we’re moving in the right direction as a team.”
