    WHAT DEENEY SAID

Deeney said: “I am absolutely buzzing to play at the UK Open Pool Championship. I always fancied myself on the table at the training ground with the boys so when this opportunity came up, I jumped at the chance to put myself to the test against some of the world's top players and can't wait to compete on 7th May."

CEO of Matchroom Multi Sport, Emily Frazer added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Troy Deeney to the UK Pool Open as a wild card player. His presence will undoubtedly heighten the excitement and competitiveness of this iconic World Nineball Tour event.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

This surprising career pivot follows Deeney's brief stint in management. After departing Birmingham City as a player in 2023, he embarked on a new role as a player-coach at Forest Green Rovers last summer. However, his tenure as head coach was short-lived, lasting less than a month due to a string of disappointing results, after he took over the reins from David Horseman in December.

Chelsea’s £50k-p/w "nightmare" was the real hero alongside Palmer vs City

In the space of just six days, Chelsea have played in two of the most memorable Premier League games in a long time.

Their victory over Tottenham last Monday was marred by yet another farce involving VAR but it was a marker of how far they have come under Mauricio Pochettino that they were able to cast aside a team who had not lost all season.

However, to hold Manchester City to a draw, albeit a high-scoring one, also took character. For a team who seemingly didn't know how to score last term, the fact they've scored eight in two games against two big sides speaks volumes.

How Chelsea drew with Man City

A 4-4 draw was what this game deserved. It was frantic, not without some dubious refereeing (of course) and a true example of why the Premier League is so good.

It looked as though Rodri had given City the win during the last ten minutes but up stepped a man born in Manchester, a certain Cole Palmer, who equalised at the death to leave Pep Guardiola wondering what might have been.

Before then, it was a game that ebbed and flowed in unrelenting fashion. Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling responded in the opening 45.

A free header for Manuel Akanji had Pochettino tearing his hair out on the stroke of half time, before Haaland scored again just after the break to make it 3-2 City.

Chelsea fought back again through Nicolas Jackson, only for late drama to spice things up even more.

Chelsea's best player vs Man City

Chelsea were at their free-flowing best against the Citizens on Sunday afternoon with Sterling seemingly buoyed by playing against his former employers.

Only a few days ago the wide man had been left out of the England squad yet again but proved this time around why he should be there. Indeed, on his day the former City star is world-class and he showed as much this weekend.

A well-taken goal at the back post was the icing on the cake from a display where he terrorised his his former teammates on the left flank.

Palmer, whose remarkably assured and composed penalty late on rescued a point also looked on form. The youngster has been exceptional since signing for Chelsea and took his tally for the season to five goals.

However, another English talent, Conor Gallagher deserves equal praise. Playing alongside two £100m plus footballers in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez is no easy task. Yet, against City, it was the £50k-per-week Cobham graduate who looked worth the most.

Gallagher is underrated in many senses. Capable of offering a goal, creativity and a relentless press, it was two of those qualities that shone through at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

He was the man who made the first goal, whipping in a fine corner to the near post for Silva to head home. It was then his fizzing shot from range that Ederson parried straight to Jackson that led to the third.

Overall, it was a truly accomplished performance from the 23-year-old who was a 'relentless pressing presence' in the middle of the park, as per Football.London's Scott Trotter who gave the England man an 8/10 match rating.

That was backed up not only by Gallagher's involvement of two of the goals, but his desire to get stuck in. Described as a "nightmare" to play against by one prominent Chelsea account on X (formerly Twitter), Gallagher made six ball recoveries, as per Fotmob.

According to Sofascore, he also won half a dozen of his defensive duels, which comprised of three tackles. A 100% dribble success rate only goes to epitomise the full range of his skill set. Competent going forward and a menace inside his own half, Gallagher deserves more praise for his role in this Chelsea side.

Hopefully, he'll now get that after the Blues' barnstorming 4-4 draw in west London.

Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane repel Australia's attack

Their fifties and Pujara’s vigil helped India trim their deficit to 154 after Australia were dismissed for 326 on the second morning in Perth

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu15-Dec-2018
Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane led India’s riposte to Pat Cummins’ tour de force to help the visitors cut their deficit to 154 at stumps on an absorbing second day at the new Perth Stadium. After Australia were dismissed for 326, India lost both M Vijay and KL Rahul to hooping inswingers, but Kohli got cracking with three boundaries off Josh Hazlewood in the 10th over. Enter Cummins and then Nathan Lyon. Their combined genius and relentless accuracy meant Kohli and India had to wait 22 more overs for their next boundary. This was the passage of play that defined the day. Cummins first attacked Kohli’s off stump and then shifted his lines wider to tease the India captain’s outside edge. At the other end, Lyon found sharp turn and bounce to remind India what they were missing: a frontline spinner. A biting offbreak, which Kohli left alone, nearly trimmed the bails while a non-turning ball drew a leading edge to point. In the 10 overs Cummins and Lyon bowled in tandem during the post-lunch session, India managed only 12 runs. Kohli, though, weathered the storm and reached his first fifty of the series, with his first boundary off Cummins this series. He ground out 74 for the third wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara, who also played his part in keeping Australia’s attack at bay till tea. His duel with Lyon in particular was intriguing, again. While Pujara often took trips down the pitch and even hid his bat behind pad, like he had done in Adelaide, the loose ball did not come from Lyon here.Cummins then returned after the break to trouble Pujara with incoming deliveries. One of them skidded off the pitch and pinged the back thigh when he was on 23. The on-field decision was not-out but Tim Paine gambled on a review and lost it because the ball was always bouncing over the stumps.Virat Kohli pulls•Getty Images

After Lyon and Cummins had built up all the pressure, it was Mitchell Starc who made the incision when he snaffled Pujara down the leg side for 24 off 103 balls. It was Starc who had produced the first breakthrough, too, when he blazed through the weak defences of Vijay off what turned out to be the last ball before lunch. Rahul, the other opener, was bowled by a sharp inswinger as well. It was the 11th time that he had been dismissed bowled or lbw in his last 15 Test innings. All of that disappeared into the background when Kohli took centerstage, hitting Hazlewood for four rousing boundaries in a mere nine deliveries, the pick of them being a checked on-drive. After seeing off two immaculate spells from Cummins, he brought up his half-century with an adventurous upper-cut over the slip cordon.Rahane showed greater attacking enterprise and eased the pressure off Kohli in an unbroken 90-run stand. He hooked Starc over backward square leg for four and then ramped him over third man for a six, evoking memories of his more famous battles with Mitchell Johnson in the country. Once the bowlers adjusted their lengths, Rahane unfurled serene front-foot drives to keep India ticking.Lyon and Cummins ended with combined figures of 39-7-74-0. On another day they could have run through the opposition with the irresistible pressure they applied, but on Saturday both Kohli and Rahane were immovable. The day had started more promisingly for Australia with Paine and Cummins taking the hosts past 300 with a nuggety 59-run stand for the seventh wicket. However, they lost their last four wickets for 16 runs to be bowled out about 25 minutes before lunch. Kohli and Rahane then thrilled a crowd of 19,042 and seized the day for India.

Man Utd could repeat their Sancho nightmare by signing £36m star

Erik ten Hag will look to bolster his attacking options at Manchester United by acquiring a £36m-rated ex-Chelsea forward in January.

As per reporter Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils have enquired about 27-year-old, Timo Werner, however negotiations are yet to take place.

The likelihood is that Werner will remain at his current club until the summer, but the move could develop over the next few weeks.

Why Man United want Werner

Following an impressive debut campaign as manager of Manchester United, Ten Hag has been dealt an unfair hand this season, due to the sheer number of players that have been unavailable, with the current list tallying up to ten.

This was on show at Goodison Park at the weekend, with the only attackers on the Red Devils bench being Facundo Pellistri and youngster, Joe Hugill.

Rasmus Hojlund was one of the players who endured time out, which left an injury-prone Anthony Martial as the main striker versus Everton. Unreliable is the most appropriate term to describe the French attacker and Ten Hag will want to ensure that his side isn’t without a true number nine like last season.

Rasmus Hojlund

Availability is key and Werner’s injury record whilst he was at Chelsea wasn’t an issue, only missing nine matches throughout his time in London due to injury.

The RB Leipzig forward is known for his electric pace, movement beyond the opponent and being a natural goal scorer, who is lethal when confidence is high. Werner also recognises himself as a player who can perform in numerous roles and four years ago, he stated “I’ve become more versatile”.

Buying individuals who can cover a handful of positions will be beneficial to United, especially going into the second half of the campaign. Werner can feature off Hojlund, as a lone striker or as a left-sided forward, but Rafael van der Vaart isn’t convinced by the attacker, labelling him as a "blind horse".

The Bundesliga transfer curse

Manchester United have signed a handful of players from the Bundesliga in the past, with the majority of those individuals failing to live up to the high standards set by the United faithful.

Jadon Sancho, Shinji Kagawa and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all made the switch from Borussia Dortmund, yet despite having small spells of quality, a lack of consistency has been the driving force behind a shortened career at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho has been the notable Bundesliga nightmare, now alienated from the squad by Ten Hag after some less-than-favourable numbers. Indeed, the former Dortmund man has only registered 12 goals in 82 outings for the Red Devils.

Unlike the three aforementioned, Werner has played in the English top-flight prior and Premier League fans are more informed of his ability. During his first campaign at Chelsea, Werner played an important role in the UEFA Champions League triumph, whilst also scoring 12 goals and accumulating 15 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

However, the signing of Romelu Lukaku in the 2021/22 season affected the German and he later claimed that he “didn’t feel honoured enough”.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

It is reasonable to presume that if Ten Hag had his full squad available, including Werner, then the rapid forward would not make it into his best starting XI ahead of Marcus Rashford or Hojlund.

Given the quote just mentioned and the fact that the boss doesn’t rotate often, dressing room unrest may occur like at Chelsea, which raises question marks on whether this would be a smart signing.

O’Neil could land upgrade on important Wolves man with move for £120k-p/w gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers lost to Fulham in their most recent Premier League outing and their inconsistency could soon start to become a real problem.

Gary O’Neil is doing a fine job at the Old Gold, but if they could string a few successive wins together, it could give them hope of securing a top-half finish in the table.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the former Bournemouth manager may seek to bolster his side, and they have been linked with a player who currently finds himself out of favour at his current club – Aaron Ramsdale.

Wolves transfer news – Aaron Ramsdale

According to a report from the Daily Star last week, the Molineux outfit are reportedly looking to sign the Arsenal goalkeeper on a loan deal with an obligation to buy in January.

This comes following news that their current number one, Jose Sa, is being tracked by clubs in Saudi Arabia and O’Neil has placed a price tag of £35m on his head, although it remains to be seen whether this deters potential suitors.

Might a change in goal freshen things up, however?

Why Aaron Ramsdale would be better for Wolves than Jose Sa

The Portuguese ‘keeper has been a dependable option between the posts for the Old Gold since joining, yet last season, he conceded 57 goals across 39 matches while keeping only 12 clean sheets in the process.

During the current campaign, Sa has kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League thus far, and he has drawn criticism in recent months, with Talking Wolves presenter Tom Parker one of the most vocal critics.

He said: “Jose Sa's distribution is the worst I've seen from a Premier League goalkeeper. Constant liability. Desperately need a new goalkeeper.”

Ramsdale has found himself out of the first-team picture at the Emirates since David Raya arrived from Brentford on a season-long loan.

Arsenal have colossal goalkeeper out on loan who could soon replace Ramsdale

Ramsdale could fall even further down the Arsenal pecking order with this young star adding even more potential competition in goal when he returns.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 27, 2023

He has made just eight appearances in all competitions, conceding eight goals in the process, and his confidence appears to have gone, which is surprising considering how good the £120k-per-week titan was during the 2022/23 season.

The Englishman conceded 1.1 goals per game in the top flight, made 2.5 saves per game (a success rate of 69%) along with succeeding with 100% of his run-outs per game (0.4) and keeping 14 clean sheets.

In comparison, Sa conceded 1.5 goals per game in the Premier League, made three saves per game (a success rate of 66%) while succeeding with 87% of his run out attempts (0.4 per game) and keeping 11 clean sheets.

There isn’t too much between the two ‘keepers, yet Ramsdale is five years younger than Sa and with interest from the Middle East sure to ramp up in the coming weeks, O’Neil may be tempted to cash in on the 30-year-old in January.

In Ramsdale, he would be signing a player who just needs some confidence shown in him in order to perform at his very best, with the 6 foot 5 gem certainly be an upgrade on Sa – hency why Wolves must act swiftly to secure his signature.

Pujara was "priceless" in Adelaide – Kohli

“Priceless.”That was India captain Virat Kohli describing the value of Cheteshwar Pujara’s runs after a 31-run victory in the first Test against Australia in Adelaide.Batting at No. 3, Pujara scored a first-innings 123 that dragged India back from 5 for 86 to 250, and then a second-innings 71, with two important middle-order partnerships, allowing India to set a fourth-innings target of 323. It was the first time he had made a century and a fifty in the same Test match.Kohli and his men had to endure a nervous wait on the fifth afternoon, the final few wickets proving difficult to dislodge. But eventually they bowled Australia out for 291 and celebrated the first time India had ever won the first Test of an Australian tour.”We were down and out at lunch on day one. His belief, grit and determination kept us in the game, he brought us back beautifully,” Kohli said after the match. “The game was poised equally on day two. We knew runs on the board, their position playing at home, they’ll obviously be a bit tentative and we cashed in on that. Any lead would have been gold and we built on that (with) a couple of partnerships in the second innings, particularly Pujara and Rahane. When they bat together like that they are our most solid pair. They gave us that safety for the bowlers to go out and get ten wickets. It took grit and determination from both of them to put us past Australia where it was hard for them to chase that total down.”Cheteshwar Pujara carves the ball away•Getty Images

Australia captain Tim Paine acknowledged that his side’s batsmen could learn a lot from Pujara.”Pujara was probably the difference between the two sides,” he said. “It’s what you want from your top 5-6 batters, hundreds and a (playing) lot of balls into our bowlers as well. He made us work very hard to get him out and we can take a lot from that for our batting group.”Kohli pointed to the Pujara-Rahane partnership as an example of how the India batsmen needed to step up and support the side’s bowlers who are “at their peak”. They went in with a four-man attack with Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami as the lead pace bowlers and R Ashwin as the sole spinner.”Super proud (of India’s bowling attack). To have four bowlers take 20 wickets to win the Test is an outstanding feat, something we haven’t done in the past in Australia. That’s why we are very proud of our bowlers. They are at their peak, all of them together and it’s something that we as batsman look at as an opportunity to put in good performances. We will be, in every Test match, gunning for a result. It’s up to our batsmen to step up in this particular series and Pujara and Rahane particularly showed that.”Pre-tour preparations were key to his success, Pujara acknowledged, and he also praised the bowlers for giving India a psychological advantage in the form of the 15-run lead”Playing here before has helped me a lot. The most important thing for me was the preparation, when I was back home. I knew what to expect from Australian pitches and playing some of their bowlers in the past has also helped me.”It was special, the way we came back in the game, we were four wickets and 40 runs and from there to make a comeback and get to 250 was the most important. Ultimately, winning the Test match, credit goes to all our bowlers for getting them out and getting the 15-run lead was a psychological advantage which made us believe we can bat well in the second innings and the partnerships in the second innings were very crucial. I think it’s our self belief which made it possible.”

'No-brainer' – Jude Bellingham reflects on decision to reject transfer interest from Man City & Liverpool to sign for Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham says it was a "no-brainer" to sign for Real Madrid despite links with Manchester City and Liverpool last summer.

Bellingham joined Real Madrid last summerWas linked with Liverpool and Man CitySays Los Blancos move was a 'no-brainer'WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international swapped Borussia Dortmund for Madrid last summer for £88 million ($110m) and he has proven to be a superb acquisition for Los Blancos, scoring 20 goals and bagging 10 assists so far. The 20-year-old admitted he had "brilliant" chats with some unnamed English sides, with Liverpool and City both trying to sign the midfielder, but in the end the chance to join the Spanish giants was too good an offer to refuse.

AdvertisementWHAT JUDE BELLINGHAM SAID

He told : "I had brilliant conversations with a couple of teams in England and they were all so respectful of my family and the way we went about the process was really good. I enjoyed getting everyone's perspective. But I think when Real Madrid came in it was a no-brainer, what they said and the way they made me feel couldn't really be repeated by anyone else. Now I'm reaping the rewards of that decision. I feel so grateful every time I go to training and wear this badge on my chest and go and represent such a great club."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham has been a revelation for Madrid so far but they may need him more than ever ahead of their crunch clash with City at the Etihad on Wednesday night. The tie is finely poised following a 3-3 first-leg draw in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. If he can help Carlo Ancelotti's men past Pep Guardiola's side, he may be writing himself into Madrid folklore.

O’Neil could finally replace Neves in Wolves swoop for £7m ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a point against Nottingham Forest over the weekend and heading into the busy festive period, the club currently occupy 13th position in the Premier League table.

Ties against West Ham United and Brentford before Christmas are certainly winnable, but the Old Gold will have to be at their best to secure three points in both matches.

Gary O’Neil will be hoping to get through the next few games unscathed heading into the January transfer window as it appears he is keen on a fellow Premier League midfielder…

Wolves transfer news – Josh Brownhill

According to the Mirror, the Molineux outfit are preparing a move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill during the January transfer window, and they could secure his signature for a cut-price fee of just £7m.

Josh Brownhill in action for Burnley.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, but the player and club are embroiled in a standoff at the moment and unless Burnley sell him in January, they will lose him for nothing.

He is valued at £20m, yet due to his contract scenario, £7m could well be enough to lure him to Wolves in the coming weeks.

Wolves could land Cunha upgrade by signing £15m gem who's like Kane

Wolves could look to sign an upgrade on Cunha in the January transfer window

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 7, 2023

The former Bournemouth manager could do with another midfielder and Brownhill may be an ideal replacement for former player Ruben Neves.

How Josh Brownhill compares to Ruben Neves

The Portuguese gem left Molineux during the summer in a £47m deal to join Al-Hilal, and it marked the end of a six-season stay in the Midlands for Neves.

The midfielder made over 250 appearances for the club while he helped establish them as a steady top-flight club after their promotion during the 2017/18 campaign.

The Old Gold have certainly missed his goals from midfield, as only two midfielders have found the back of the net during the current campaign, and O’Neil is clearly looking to sign a player who can chip in from the centre of the pitch.

Neves scored six times in the league last term, while Brownhill netted seven – albeit in the Championship – along with grabbing eight assists, and this type of player is exactly what the club need going forward.

During the 2023/24 season so far, the 27-year-old Brownhill has scored three Premier League goals and he currently ranks second in the squad for goals and assists (three), along with ranking third for key passes per game (0.8) and for tackles per game (1.7), showcasing his abilities across a range of metrics.

He has been impressive during his debut season in the top flight and a move to Wolves would allow him to continue this, especially as he could be filling the boots of Neves.

The midfielder was hailed as “brilliant” by Jack Cork in 2022 and O’Neil has an excellent chance of landing a player who may only get better for a reasonable fee in the coming weeks.

The move makes perfect sense and while the club signed Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Boubacar Traore, while also adding Tommy Doyle on loan, none have managed to really replace Neves.

By signing Brownhill, they will sign a Premier League standard player for a fraction of his valuation, and it could turn into a shrewd investment by the club.
