Shubman Gill leads KKR to stay alive, Kings XI knocked out

Sam Curran’s unbeaten 55 off 24 had given Kings XI a competitive total but KKR’s top order make short work of it

The Report by Danyal Rasool03-May-2019
The most pleasing thing about this game were the cameos – the half-century on either side, one score in the high 40s apiece, and – for good measure – an eye-catching cameo from Andre Russell. In a game brimming with high-class batting, Kings XI Punjab set Kolkata Knight Riders what looked a challenging target of 184. Nicholas Pooran’s 27-ball 48 – half of it coming in sixes – saw Kings XI on top early on, before a sumptuously intelligent 24-ball 55 not out from Sam Curran helped his side power to 183. Sunil Narine and Sandeep Warrier had stifled the innings through the Powerplay, but Kings XI’s success at building partnerships following the early dismissals of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul ensured they remained on track to post a competitive total. It was then something of a pity the bowlers couldn’t back that up and deliver the result Kings XI so desperately needed to keep realistic hopes of qualification alive. Chris Lynn has found himself in a run of form his side had desperately needed after losing their way through the group stages, with four half-centuries in the last seven innings. He fell four short of that mark today, but in 28 destructive balls, he had helped Knight Riders to 62 in the Powerplay. From thereon, Shubman Gill took over.Ensuring Lynn’s wicket did not result in a slump of the run rate, Gill worked the field expertly for the next six overs or so, with the occasional risk paying off. Handy contributions from Robin Uthappa and Russell helped, but it was Gill’s unbeaten 65 that saw Knight Riders all the way through, and while the game ended two overs early, the outcome – seven-wicket Knight Riders win – had been clear for the best part of the final hour.Shubman’s teenage kicksIt’s fair to say Shubnam came into this year’s IPL with something of a reputation to defend, having already made his international debut a few weeks ago. The way the tournament panned out hadn’t quite matched the hype though, with a pair of half-centuries interspersed with a string of underwhelming scores. Tonight, he allowed Chris Lynn to do the early damage while biding his time at the other end, and by the end of the 12th over, Gill had accumulated just 34 off 31.It was only then that he saw fit to launch, with no less than R Ashwin the chosen target for the teenager’s aggression. He charged Ashwin’s first ball to loft it in the air over long-on. A second six went over backward square leg two balls later, and the half-century was brought up with a late cut that would have had the MCC members purring on the first morning of a Test match. Even as the wickets fell at the other end, Knight Riders’ youngest team member had assumed the role of senior player, and eventually saw them through to the end.Curran’s cerebral knockTwenty-year-old Sam Curran’s fresh-faced demeanour and slight build aren’t exactly redolent of a typical power hitter, but in conjuring up that absorbing unbeaten 24-ball 55, he managed the best strike rate across an innings for Kings XI all season. Each ball was like a chess move, and Curran was one step ahead most of the way. He used his feet to scoop over fine leg, took the pace of the bowler in his strike to whack him over the top, and found angles to manoeuvre the ball into gaps Ashwin might have thought were impossible to pierce. The final over from Harry Gurney was such an astonishing display of mental dominance over the bowler it became impossible to tell whether Gurney was bowling badly or Curran playing the innings of the season. The last six balls yielded 22 as a discombobulated Gurney knew not which variation to try, and in the moment, it appeared to have powered Kings XI to a total that looked slightly above par.Gayle gone earlyPerhaps the most telling blow struck all evening was executed in the first 15 minutes. In a game that would see several players produce vital knocks, a half hour at the crease for Chris Gayle might have been enough to see Kings XI home. Instead, a pair of boundaries in the first over was his lot as Gayle struggles with Gurney’s varied pace and Narine’s guile, with the big man getting frustrated at his failure to find the middle of his bat more regularly. Sandeep Warrier, who had a couple of overs ago sent KL Rahul back to the pavilion, pitched one short of a length to Gayle. It was perhaps shorter than intended, and Gayle would have backed himself to clear the ropes. But with what had happened in the first three overs, Gayle jabbed at the ball early, eager to get himself going. The fielder at deep-backward square had been positioned exactly for that scenario, and it was the first of a number of plans that came together for a Knight Riders’ side that suddenly appear up and running in the tournament again.

Spurs whiz who won 10 duels was better than Son vs Bournemouth

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League on New Year's Eve as they hammered Bournemouth 3-1 at home.

Spurs came into the match off the back of a bitterly disappointing 4-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out and were in need of an immediate reaction.

Ange Postecoglou got exactly that as Pape Matar Sarr, Heung-min Son, and Richarlison all got on the scoresheet to secure all three points on Sunday.

Whilst Son was sublime on the left wing, the real hero of the afternoon for Tottenham was central midfielder Giovani Lo Celso as he caught the eye with an exceptional showing.

The Spurs skipper produced yet another exciting performance out wide for the club as he got on the scoresheet for the 12th time in the Premier League this season.

His standout moment came in the 71st minute as the South Korea international raced onto a ball down the left side and brilliantly found the back of the net with a rasping finish.

He also created one 'big chance' and made two key passes but was not rewarded with an assist for his creative efforts throughout the match.

However, it was not a perfect performance from the experienced forward as the 31-year-old sensation failed in all three of his attempted dribbles and lost six of his eight duels.

Lo Celso's performance against Bournemouth in numbers

Whilst Son was, once again, electric on the left flank, Lo Celso was the driving force in the middle of the park with a fantastic display in and out of possession for the side.

The Argentina international played a crucial role in both of the first two goals for the hosts, firstly teeing up Sarr to lash in an excellent opening strike.

He then assisted the second goal with an outrageous flick in behind the Cherries defence to send Son through down the left channel, which allowed the South Korean ace to fire the ball in.

Lo Celso completed 92% (34/37) of his attempted passes and 100% (3/3) of his dribbles to go along with two key passes – both of which were rewarded with assists. This shows that he was creative and forward-thinking without being wasteful on the ball.

The 27-year-old whiz was also almost perfect defensively with a combative performance. He won 10 of his 13 ground duels to make three tackles, one interception, and one clearance, whilst no opposition player completed a dribble past him.

These statistics show that Lo Celso was effective in all of his actions, in and out of possession, throughout the match, which is why he was better than Son, who left a bit to be desired with his wasteful dribbling and how easily Bournemouth beat him in duels.

This allowed him to make an impact at both ends of the pitch due to his ability to cut out opposition attacks whilst also playing a vital role for Spurs on the ball.

The impressive whiz, who was given a match rating of 8/10 by football.london's Alasdair Gold – who referenced the player's two assists, was the real hero for Postecoglou as he made telling contributions offensively and remained strong defensively.

Newcastle could revive Bruno with move for the "best modern midfielder"

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe may feel grateful that his side's dreadful run of form has come during the transfer window as it offers him the chance to strengthen his squad in weaker areas.

One of the Magpies' biggest issues over the past few weeks has been how easy the midfield are to play through. Against Liverpool on New Year's Day, Howe used four different players in the middle of the park throughout the match and all four were dribbled past seven times in total as the Reds registered a Premier League record xG.

Nonetheless, the manager is reportedly eyeing up one player who can put Newcastle's midfield on lockdown.

Newcastle United transfer news – Kalvin Phillips

According to a report from Rudy Galetti earlier this week, Newcastle are still in talks with European champions Manchester City over the possible loan signing of Kalvin Phillips before the January window closes. Juventus, who were also in the running, recently admitted that Phillips is no longer a transfer target, paving the way for the Magpies to come out on top.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

It has also been reported that Man City are seeking a £7.5m loan fee but also want the inclusion of a £40m obligation to buy clause inserted into the player's contract. Meanwhile, head coach Pep Guardiola revealed back in October that the door would be left open for the former Leeds United midfielder to complete a January exit.

The England international has played just 319 minutes in total for the treble-winners this season which has been spread across ten appearances. Newcastle could offer the 28-year-old a career lifeline by bringing him to St. James' Park until the end of the campaign to make up for the loss of Sandro Tonali, who is absent due to a lengthy suspension.

Kalvin Phillips' stats this season

Since moving to the Etihad Stadium eighteen months ago for £42m, Phillips has played 31 games in total for the club. In the meantime, he has picked up five trophies and is currently averaging one trophy every 5.2 matches under Guardiola.

ByAdam Scully Jan 10, 2024

Nonetheless, with the Euros kicking off in Germany this summer, Phillips may need to get some minutes under his belt if he is to claim a seat on the Three Lions' plane.

Right now, Newcastle lack depth and quality in their midfield department. Since Tonali's suspension earlier in the campaign, Howe has been forced to use Bruno Guimaraes in a deeper position, operating as the lone six in the side's 4-3-3.

However, the Brazil international is far from an excellent defensive player and even ranks quite low in most out-of-possession metrics this season when compared to all other holding midfielders in Europe's top-five leagues – also earning a measly 4/10 match rating from the Chronicle for his recent display at Anfield.

As the table shows, the former Lyon man is not great for getting stuck in defensively and given the team's recent struggles, Howe could benefit by using him in a more advanced position as a central midfielder. The Brazilian has played this role 62 times in his career, recording six goals and five assists.

Signing Phillips on loan would allow Howe to do this. The Englishman has it all as he can carry out his defensive duties just as well as his attacking ones. Former Champions League-winning manager Fabio Capello even once described Phillips as the "best modern midfielder" he had ever seen.

Phillips is excellent defensively and can help progress the team further up the pitch, but would also Bruno to be more creative in the opposition's half. It's no wonder Howe is keen to complete this deal.

Celtic interested in signing Gelhardt ahead of Rangers from Leeds on loan

Celtic are in the market for new additions this window and are reportedly now keeping tabs on a striker who hasn't featured too regularly this season.

Celtic's main January priority…

Brendan Rodgers will have an idea of where he would like to strengthen in the January transfer window and is likely to target signings in more than one area of the field.

However, there is an argument to say that bringing in a striker is the most important transfer pursuit for the Hoops during the mid-season market period, in light of Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda being selected to compete in the Asian Cup with their respective nations. Kyogo Furuhashi is now the sole survivor left to hold the fort in attack for the Scottish Premiership holders.

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the talented young defender.

ByDan Emery Jan 4, 2024

Reinforcements will be necessary for Celtic to guarantee sufficient depth in the forward areas heading into the return of football in Scotland upon the conclusion of the winter break.

Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden is a name that continues to be on the Hoops' radar, though Football Scotland understand that they are yet to test the Superliga outfit's resolve with an improved bid this month after seeing a £4 million offer rejected for his services in the summer.

Bologna's Sydney van Hooijdonk, Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski and Heart of Midlothian captain Lawrence Shankland have also been mentioned as potential new arrivals in Glasgow; nevertheless, it remains to be seen if any will be brought to Parkhead to help supplement their existing offensive options. Now, a new name looks to have been entered into the discussion as the Hoops look to get a deal over the line for a new forward, according to a report.

According to MailOnline reporter Simon Jones, Celtic are interested in Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt, who is also attracting interest from their arch-rivals Rangers.

The report doesn't specify whether any deal for the 21-year-old would be available on a permanent deal or loan basis; however, journalist Alan Nixon has shed some further light on the Liverpool-born ace's situation, stating the following on social media platform X: "He’s been nowhere near for weeks and can go on loan. On big money. That will have to be a sponsored loan for someone."

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

Labelled someone with "big potential" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Gelhardt has made eight appearances across all competitions this season, finding the net once against Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup (Gelhardt statistics – Transfermarkt).

On the face of it, he doesn't seem like a signing that may excite Celtic supporters; nevertheless, how this situation may play out remains to be seen as the Hoops look to source a marksman in the next few weeks.

Oman continue dominance with win over Hong Kong

USA brush aside PNG to notch second win while Namibia overpower Canada

Bilal Khan accepts the Man of the Match award after his 4 for 30•Peter Della Penna

Left-arm swing bowler Bilal Khan bagged four wickets on one of his favourite hunting grounds at Wanderers before Jatinder Singh’s half-century paced a simple chase. Oman thus continued their undefeated run at WCL Division 2 with a seven-wicket win over Hong Kong. Oman are now in the driver’s seat for one of the four ODI status berths up for grabs in the tournament, and can be the first team to clinch it with a win over Namibia on Wednesday.Man of the Match Bilal struck a massive blow in the third over, claiming the tournament’s leading scorer Anshy Rath for just 3, caught in the slips by Jatinder. Hong Kong’s innings finally started to stabilise around Babar Hayat and Tanwir Afzal, who added 62 for the fifth wicket to take them to 109 for 4 by the 32nd, but Bilal’s intervention broke the stand with Tanwir dismissed for 32.Hayat carried on to top-score with 56, but was the third of legspinning allrounder Khawar Ali’s victims, leaving Hong Kong 149 for 7. Bilal was then brought back to wipe out the tail in the 48th over. A run out of last recognised batsman Scott McKechnie for 26 was followed by wickets on back-to-back balls for Bilal, which finished Hong Kong off for 176 with two overs unused.Oman faced little pressure in the chase, with the Hong Kong bowling unit lacking any spark as Jatinder and Khawar coasted through a 79-run opening stand in the first 21 overs. Khawar was run-out for 28 to break the stand, but Jatinder compiled 49 runs in tandem with Aqib Ilyas before both fell in quick succession to the spin duo of Kinchit Shah and Jhatavedh Subramanyan. Captain Zeeshan Maqsood and Mohammad Nadeem knocked off the remaining 43 runs without much fuss. Nadeem ended unbeaten on 31, and has yet to be dismissed in the tournament. The last time these two teams met in one-day cricket was in 2011 at WCL Division 3 in Hong Kong, when Papua New Guinea sent USA in to bat under a heavy cloud cover and bowled them out for 44. It took eight years, but USA finally exacted a heavy dose of revenge. The new-ball exploits of Ali Khan and an incisive spell of left-arm spin by Karima Gore decimated the PNG middle order.Monank Patel drives over mid-off•Peter Della Penna

On a ground where chasing targets has traditionally been best after the pitch flattens out in the afternoon sun, PNG chose to bat first at the toss and paid the price as Ali Khan produced another hostile spell of fast bowling to take three wickets in the Powerplay, giving him a tournament-best 12 wickets after three matches. It began with a brute of a delivery to Tony Ura, who edged to Steven Taylor at second slip, before a pair of inswingers trapped Sese Bau and Assad Vala leg before to leave PNG 19 for 3.Gore arrived in the 24th but attacked the stumps from ball one. His first three wickets were lbw decisions. Chad Soper and Lega Siaka prodded down the wrong line to arm balls before Jason Kila was late on a sweep. Damien Ravu was bowled by Gore for the final wicket as the innings lasted just 39.3 overs.Monank Patel and Xavier Marshall batted ten overs before lunch to take USA to 49 for no loss. PNG extended a streak of three maidens with two more to start after the break, but Monank and Marshall exploded shortly thereafter, scoring 79 off the next 43 balls to end the match. Monank took Siaka’s part-time spin apart in the 19th, driving three sixes in a 22-run frame, and was named Man of the Match.Stephan Baard’s 90 at the top of the order was bookended by an unbeaten 65 from Craig Williams as Namibia bounced back from their final-over loss to USA to notch a 98-run win over Canada. Namibia moves to 2-1 with the win while Canada remains the only winless team in the tournament at 0-3, as their hopes of reclaiming ODI status hang by a thread.Baard and Jean Bredenkamp added 73 for the second wicket to steady the innings after the loss of JP Kotze in the Powerplay for just 6. Bredenkamp eventually fell to left-arm spinner Saad bin Zafar, who along with Nikhil Dutta took two wickets each to slow down Namibia in the middle stage of the innings. But Williams produced half-century stands with Baard and JJ Smit to keep Namibia on course for a well-above par total at United’s sluggish outfield. Smit clubbed three sixes in his 35 off 23 balls to dominate a 51-run stand with Williams before falling in the 49th over to Romesh Eranga.Canada’s batting struggles in Namibia continued as six of the top seven got starts but none passed Rodrigo Thomas’ 28. Dilon Heyliger wound up top-scoring from No. 10 with an unbeaten 29 to save Canada from taking an even bigger hit to their net run rate.

Why Pep Guardiola 'completely agrees' with Erik ten Hag as under-pressure Man Utd boss prepares for crunch FA Cup final against Man City

Pep Guardiola said he had plenty of sympathy for Erik ten Hag after Manchester United endured their worst season in the Premier League era.

City manager sympathises with United bossRed Devils suffered over 60 injuries'Your squad must be fit fit fit'WHAT HAPPENED?

City are overwhelming favourites heading into the FA Cup final against United after winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title. The Red Devils, by contrast, registered their lowest finish in the league since 1990 and finished with a negative goal difference. And the dire campaign looks set to cost Ten Hag his job. But Guardiola said he felt for United as they were hampered by relentless injury problems.

AdvertisementWHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

"He has done many good things, I have huge respect for his job in the past and now at United I completely agree when I listen to him when he says they have not had a full squad this season and had a lot of injuries," Guardiola told a press conference. "I think this is the most important thing they have to think about because I am always focused that we have to be fit, fit, fit – otherwise we cannot use the players. They had a lot of problems and when that happens the manager suffers a lot. The squad is really good but the problem is when you cannot use them. This is a big disadvantage."

Getty THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola said that United can never be counted out despite their problems and singled out Bruno Fernandes as their most influential player. "The brilliant players they have up front, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund. The influence of Bruno on that team is outstanding. His creativity is one of the best I have ever seen."

Ten Hag has had to contend with more than 60 injuries this season, leading to players missing a combined total of more than 350 games. United will still be missing Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire for the final, although City have no injury worries aside from Ederson, who would have missed out anyway as Stefan Ortega is the first choice goalkeeper in cup competitions.

Spurs could land Kulusevski 2.0 with move for £9m "crazy talent"

Tottenham Hotspur could well be set to strengthen their charges once the market re-opens in just a few days' time, amid reports linking the Lilywhites with a move for one of the most highly-rated young talents in Europe.

Spurs transfer news

According to Italian outlet InterLive.it, Spurs are among the clubs who have expressed an interest in signing FC Copenhagen sensation, Roony Bardghji, with the north Londoners joining the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle United, Napoli and Juventus in the race for his signature.

FC Copenhagen midfielderRoony Bardghji.

The report claims that manager Ange Postecoglou has personally requested the signing of the 18-year-old in January, despite potential doubts over the 5 foot 8 forward's small and slender frame which could make adapting to life in the Premier League somewhat difficult.

If a deal is to be struck in 2024, however, it could come at a relative bargain cost, with the piece suggesting that the Danish outfit will only demand a fee of around €10m (£9m), despite prior reports indicating that the youngster could be worth as much as £30m.

Roony Bardghji's style of play

While not quite a household name just yet, the "crazy talent" – as hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – certainly announced himself to the wider world after scoring a late winner in the 4-3 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League earlier this year.

That stunning half-volley is one of 11 goals that the former Malmo youth product has scored in 30 games in all competitions this season, with his overall tally for the Superliga side standing at 15 goals in 71 outings – a respectable return for a player still firmly in his teenage years.

Such an explosion at senior level has even earned Bardghji comparisons to a certain Lionel Messi, yet for those at N17, the hope will be that he can emulate the success of his fellow Swede, Dejan Kulusevski, with the latter man currently shining under Postecoglou.

A left-footed attacker who can feature all across the frontline or in a playmaking berth, like Bardghji, Kulusevski has sparkled since joining Tottenham on an initial loan deal from Juventus in January 2022, registering 30 goals and assists in 76 games in all competitions to date.

In the current campaign thus far, the 23-year-old – who has been tipped to become an £80m-100m player by pundit Gary Neville – has started every single league game, scoring five goals and registering two assists in that time.

richarlison-heung-min-son-tottenham-opinion

To potentially then have the next Kulusevski on their hands with the signing of the Sweden U21 international would then be a real blessing for Postecoglou and co, with Bardghji able to strike up a devastating attacking partnership with talismanic skipper, Heung-min Son.

The South Korean superstar currently leads the way as the club's top scorer this season with 11 goals, with the teenager likely to help ease that goalscoring burden either from the flanks or through the middle, having scored seven goals in just 17 league games this term.

The Copenhagen ace can also provide quality service to the 31-year-old when required having created two big chances and averaged 1.3 key passes per game in 2023/24, indicating that there is more to his game than just putting the ball in the back of the net.

Levy could land Spurs' biggest talent since Bale in "crazy" £30m whiz

The north Londoners are seemingly looking at another teen sensation who could sparkle at N17.

ByRobbie Walls Dec 21, 2023

While still a way to go to reach the levels of his compatriot Kulusevski – who has chalked up eight big chances and averages 2.3 key passes per game – the signs are that Bardghji could blossom into a real superstar in the years to come.

With Postecoglou already boasting the likes of Kulusevski and Son in his frontline, throwing another dynamic delight into the mix could help the Greek-Aussie take his side to even greater heights.

West Brom can shrug off potential Fellows sale by signing “emerging talent”

West Bromwich Albion made it back-to-back 4-1 wins by overcoming a leaky Blackburn Rovers side at the Hawthorns comfortably, Brandon Thomas-Asante's double in the one-sided affair helping the Baggies pick up a win and consolidate fifth position in the current Championship standings.

Tom Fellows got in on the act in the resounding victory too, opening the scoring to justify Carlos Corberan sticking with the 20-year-old winger in the starting lineup after starring in the FA Cup versus Aldershot Town.

The homegrown Baggies product is attracting interest from plenty of higher-up suitors as a result of his recent positive displays, with West Brom powering ahead with multiple incomings in the building to soften the blow of Fellows potentially exiting this month.

West Brom want to sign German talent

Football Insider revealed on Saturday that West Brom are eager to bring Hertha Berlin talent Derry Scherhant to England this January, with Ipswich Town also sniffing around for the German youngster according to the report.

Played both down the flanks and as a centre forward this season out in Berlin, Scherhant could be a wise buy if Fellows does depart the Hawthorns for pastures new.

Previously linked with a shock move to Germany where Scherhant currently resides, Fellows is now subject to interest from Everton in the Premier League according to Fabrizio Romano on social media.

Still yet to tie Fellows down to a new contract, Corberan could swoop in for this 21-year-old transfer target if the Baggies end up becoming powerless over the ongoing situation with their in-demand winger and he ends up walking away.

How Scherhant fits into the West Brom team

Once referred to as an "emerging talent" by football journalist Mike McGrath when the attacker was on the radar of Newcastle United, Scherhant wouldn't simply move to West Brom and wait for an opportunity on the sidelines as one for the future anymore.

Able to be versatile and play down either flank, Scherhant's main joy to date at Hertha Berlin has been when he's deployed as an out-and-out centre forward – notching up an impressive 26 goals playing in that role for the Berlin II team from just 45 appearances in that position.

Scherhant even has five goals from five this campaign for the reserve side before being bumped up to the first-team set-up, proving himself to be a deadly finisher in the German capital.

Yet, when drafted into the play in the senior side, the 21-year-old has commonly played down the left-hand side on top of his striker duties.

With Josh Maja out of action for some time, and Daryl Dike also prone to a lengthy injury layover, Corberan could well utilise Scherhant as a backup striker option to Brandon Thomas-Asante as well as using him as another body down the wings.

The Spanish manager in the Hawthorns dug-out does enjoy having a versatile and flexible squad to call upon when numbers are light, with the likes of Jed Wallace playing across a whole host of attacking positions this season.

Scherhant, who stands at 6 foot 1, could well tick that box for Corberan too, with the 21-year-old even capable of slotting in at right wing and doing a job there if Fellows does move on.

Corberan's men will just have to hope Scherhant isn't tempted by a move to the Tractor Boys over the Baggies, with the West Midlands outfit scared that Ipswich will come out on top again in a transfer tussle as they did by landing Jeremy Sarmiento on loan to West Brom's dismay.

Still, with Fellows rumoured to be off, West Brom will need to push on and add some needed depth to their side in order to maintain a playoff spot in the Championship.
