We continue to let ourselves down in key moments – Jason Holder

In the sixth over of India’s chase in the third ODI in Port of Spain, Virat Kohli, batting on 11, was surprised by a Keemo Paul delivery that went past him as he tried to make room to play on the leg side and caught an inside edge. Behind the stumps, Shai Hope couldn’t get enough of his gloves on the ball and dropped it. Kohli went on to score an unbeaten 114 and clinch the match for India. It was a chance that Jason Holder rued at the end of the match.”We have got to hold our chances and we didn’t hold them today. [Kohli] made us pay for it,” Holder said at the press conference. “Credit to him he batted really well and he won the game for India in the end.”They got off to a really good start and so did we. I think it was a really, really good wicket for cricket. Conditions got a little tougher in the afternoon after the rain fell. The ball was a bit wet and the outfield was obviously very wet, too. It didn’t work for us today.”Before the match, Carlos Brathwaite had said that the team wasn’t playing as badly as results suggested and the problem for the side came down to executing the critical moments. That held true in the third ODI, too. There were times, with bat and ball, when West Indies looked like they had the upper hand. Like that opening stand of 115 in nearly 11 overs between Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis, and Fabien Allen’s double-strike in the 13th over to dismiss Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan. But they failed to build on the big moments.”From T20s to the last ODI here, we have played some pretty decent cricket in patches, it is just a matter for us to put it together more often than not and that’s where we continue to let ourselves down,” Holder said.”It’s just a matter for us to continue to build, you know. I keep saying it’s a matter for us to really seize the key moments of the game and play those key moments a little bit better than we have been in the past.”Holder said there were a lot of individual performances – positives – that the team could build on going into the Test series and beyond.”The way Chris played today, Evin Lewis too showed a lot of form. The bowlers had a reasonable time too. The last game I thought we bowled really, really well,” he said. “Today we were off a little bit, but generally our bowling has led us in the last couple of games.”Nicholas Pooran continues to show what he can produce here at this level. Every single batter today really put their hands up today. I was really, really pleased how we batted in the situation after the rain break. In the past we lost too many wickets and not being able to – or struggled to – bat, and I think we handled the situation very well today and put ourselves in a really good situation in the halfway stage, you know. Just unfortunate we weren’t able to defend it but when you don’t hold your chances these things happen.”With the Test series beginning on August 22, Holder urged the side to carry the momentum from their 2-1 series win over England earlier this year. An additional incentive for the side will be the points in the World Test Championship.”We’ve got a few days off. This is a fresh group, different faces coming in to the Test squad. It’s a matter for us to continue doing the good work we have been doing in Test cricket in the last two-three years,” he said. “The first series we had this year was a success. I know the guys would be ready to go against India here in this second series of the year.”Obviously with the Test championship around it’s something I look forward to play. I think the guys are up for it. We started really well this year beating England at home and you know we had some brilliant individual performances. It’s just a matter for us to build. The Test championships are two years away, we have a lot of cricket to play in the next two years, I think every series will be important. Each and every moment in the series will be important.”

ExWHUemployee shares David Moyes update from very top West Ham sources

Reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has shared an update on David Moyes' future at West Ham and technical director Tim Steidten's search for alternatives.

West Ham postpone Moyes new deal talks amid poor run

The Hammers have reportedly postponed talks over a new deal for Moyes amid a very poor run of form and backlash from a large section of supporters (Jason Burt).

West Ham remain without a win in 2024, and their 6-0 humiliation at the hands of Arsenal last weekend in the Premier League saw fans desert the London Stadium in droves.

Moyes has overseen the club's most successful period in recent memory, guiding them to a Europa Conference League triumph in Prague last year and ending their long wait for silverware.

West Ham's successive seasons qualifying for Europe, though, have been somewhat marred in the eyes of some supporters by Moyes' dogmatic style and lacklustre domestic form – with the east Londoners just about avoiding relegation last season.

The Hammers hierarchy are now said to be contemplating Moyes' future, with owner David Sullivan in two minds over keeping Moyes at the club. The 60-year-old tactician is also believed to have a complicated relationship with Steidten, as both men bare the brunt of Sullivan's frustration following a regrettable January transfer window (Graeme Bailey).

There appears to be a degree of disharmony behind the scenes at West Ham, and there are other rumours that the likes of Paulo Fonseca are being considered as possible future replacements for Moyes.

Now, insider Ex has shared an update on Moyes' future and West Ham's potential manager search via West Ham Way.

ExWHUemployee shares West Ham manager update

According to Ex, Moyes contract talks are indeed on hold, and Steidten is personally "looking" at West Ham managerial alternatives.

“Understandably, there are some serious doubts over David Moyes,” reported Ex on The West Ham Way Podcast.

“We have spoken with the very top and it was said: ‘Whilst David Moyes is statistically the best manager in what he’s delivered for the club, it's clear his style is not appreciated.’

West Ham United manager David Moyes looks dejected during a Premier League match.

“We know the Chairman is very aware of the discontent amongst the fans, he's not on social media but is very well informed of what is happening.”

“A new deal for Moyes is not close,” added Ex. “Results and performances have put any planned talks back, and the manager of course has been warned things must improve fast.

“The objective was to retain Moyes, and the club are known to want to stay loyal to the manager, however we can confirm options are being assessed. Tim Steidten will be looking at alternatives as the club plan ahead, although that is to be expected.”

West Ham next take on Nottingham Forest in the league on Saturday, and it's certainly in Moyes' best interest to turn the tide sharply against Nuno Espirito Santo's men.

Rawalpindi, Multan among four Pakistan cities to host PSL 2020

The PCB has reaffirmed its commitment to host the PSL next year in Pakistan in its entirety, but the UAE remains a back-up venue

In arguably the most significant step towards the PSL returning in full to Pakistan, the owners of the franchises in conjunction with the PCB reaffirmed their commitment to playing the fifth edition of the tournament in the country. Four venues – Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Rawalpindi – have been nominated to cover the entire tournament spanning 34 games, though the UAE remains as a back-up option. The PCB chairman met all franchise owners on Monday to discuss the plans for the tournament slated to begin on February 20 in Karachi. As things stand, Lahore stands to stage 13 matches.Multan, which last hosted international cricket in 2008, is also believed to be ready to host the tournament. The stadium in Rawalpindi, meanwhile, is being renovated to ensure it is prepared to host matches.Over the years, the PCB has used the PSL as a platform to revive international cricket in the country. The ball got rolling in 2017 when the Gadaffi Stadium hosted the final. In the following season, four games were held across Karachi and Lahore.Earlier this year, the final eight games were scheduled to be played in Lahore and Karachi. However, they were all moved to Karachi following political tensions with India, which shares a border with Lahore. The 2017 PSL final paved way for an ICC-approved World XI to tour Pakistan for three T20Is, while West Indies and Sri Lanka have also toured the country to play T20Is since. Prior to that, only Zimbabwe visited Pakistan in 2015 for three ODIs and two T20Is since the 2009 terror attack, and while the games themselves went off without a hitch, a a bomb explosion two kilometres from the stadium killed one policeman. While the World XI series saw an influx of high-profile players, including a strong South African contingent led by Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla, as well as Tamim Iqbal, Thisara Perera and current Australian Test captain Tim Paine, many others high-profile players have been reluctant to tour Pakistan in the past.To PCB’s credit, they managed to convince all the foreign players who featured in the 2018 season to tour Pakistan. Among them was Shane Watson, who had earlier expressed his reservations of playing in the country.During the meeting, the franchises touched upon various other issues, including reworking their 10-year contracts with the PCB, seeking perpetuity rights, abolishing bank guarantees, and pegging dollar rate on payments and taxation.Since it was an informal meeting, all these matters will be taken up when the PSL’s general council meets later this month, with a working group constituted to deliberate matters.

Aston Villa will regret selling "unreal” ace who’s outperformed Diaby

All of Aston Villa’s summer transfers have performed well this season, which proves that their recruitment strategy has been spot on.

Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby were the two big summer purchases, with both becoming important players.

However, there is one individual that Unai Emery didn’t have in his plans, which is a decision that could come back to bite the Spaniard.

Moussa Diaby’s start to life at Villa

Diaby became Villa’s club record signing in the summer as he swapped the Bundesliga for the Premier League in a deal worth £51.9m.

The 24-year-old has been handed lots of opportunities by the former Arsenal boss, playing 34 games across all competitions, with a goal contribution record of 12.

Emery has been able to trust the attacker in multiple positions, whether it is on either flank or as a second striker behind Ollie Watkins, which is where he has mainly been deployed.

However, Diaby is often subbed off in the Premier League, as his average minutes per game is 62. Over his 24 league games, he’s scored four times and provided six assists.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star has been relatively impressive, but in truth, he hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations of his record-breaking fee just yet.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace since leaving Villa

Jaden Philogene-Bidace only made six appearances for Villa’s first team, registering two assists in the process. One of those came in the opening match against Newcastle United, when he was subbed on for Matty Cash minutes from time.

Nonetheless, the 22-year-old moved away from the club permanently in September, when he joined Hull City for just £5m, after numerous spells in the Championship at Cardiff City and Stoke City.

Cardiff winger Jaden Philogene.

Since moving to the Tigers, the dazzling winger – who can operate on both flanks – has been extremely impressive, with his performances often being game-changing for his side.

The table below showcases his stats from this season, and how he compares to his positional peers.

As you can see, Philogene-Bidace is a "fantastic" player, as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, and he's been absolutely immense in the Championship this season, scoring seven goals and picking up five assists, which puts him among the elite category of wingers who can provide both creativity and goal-scoring threat – while also eclipsing Diaby's top-flight return.

The latest goal involvement came last night with the youngster pulling off an audacious rabona. On first viewing it looks as though it sails straight in but it takes a slight deflection and soars into the net, cruelly going down as an own goal.

Even still, that "unreal" piece of quality has showcased the full array of the playmaker's talents – as hailed by reporter Alex Howell – with it easy to see why the Hammersmith native had even "surprised" Emery during pre-season, in the words of Howell.

The England U21 international is extremely confident, as displayed by his high shot total and direct approach via his dribbling. The latter is where most of his creative magic stems from, as he can drive past opponents with a direct approach to reach the penalty box.

Philogene-Bidace would have suited Emery’s intense approach perfectly from an out-of-possession perspective, as he ranks in the top 11% for tackles, which shows he works extremely hard off the ball to regain control for his side.

Overall, selling the in-form whiz for just £5m without giving him a real opportunity to shine could just be one of the biggest mistakes the club has made in years, representing arguably the most notable blunder of a relatively serene stint in charge so far for Emery.

Aston Villa could sign £51m Luiz replacement who’s like Rice

Aston Villa are looking like they could have a busy last 24 hours of the January transfer market.

They have reached an agreement to secure Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers in a deal expected to reach £15m as Unai Emery has acted in order to bolster his attacking options.

Aston Villa transfer target Morgan Rogers in action against Chelsea.

Heading into the dying embers of the window, the Spaniard will be looking to add at least another new face to his squad, especially as their schedule is likely to be hectic over the coming months.

Could they shop in a market which Emery knows well? A fresh update has them showing interest in a Bundesliga midfielder who has shone this season…

Aston Villa may make another signing before the window closes

With a deal for Rogers more or less over the line, it could give the former Arsenal manager a boost in his pursuit for more signings.

According to SportBild (via Sport Witness), Villa are keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios ahead of making a potential late swoop for the player.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielderExequiel Palacios.

Although he is performing wonderfully in the Bundesliga this term, the Midlands outfit are the only Premier League side mentioned in the report and this may give Emery an edge when it comes to trying to lure him to the club.

Villa are no strangers to dealing with Leverkusen. They signed Leon Bailey back in the summer of 2021 before making Moussa Diaby their record signing last summer, and might it be a third time they snatch a prized asset from the German club?

Xabi Alonso has set the bar high with regard to the valuation for the 25-year-old, placing a €60m (£51m) price tag on his head – a similar fee to the one that brought Diaby to England.

With Douglas Luiz attracting plenty of attention following his sublime displays throughout 2023/24, the Brazilian may be entering his final few months as a Villa player.

If this is the case, Emery will need to find a replacement sooner rather than later and turning to Palacios could be the most logical option.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news: Unai eyes £40m deal; Saudi club want star

It’s a huge summer for Aston Villa and Unai Emery as they prepare for the Champions League.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 11, 2024 Douglas Luiz’s future remains uncertain

The former Manchester City starlet has enjoyed a stunning resurgence at Villa since Emery took over in October 2022.

During his first three seasons in the Midlands, he scored six goals and registered six assists. Since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, however, the 25-year-old has added more attacking nous to his game and has been rewarded by finding the back of the net on 13 occasions, chipping in with 12 assists too, and it is clear he is becoming a key figure for the club.

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

This form has led to interest from Arsenal, and they had bids rejected for him in 2022, yet Emery currently values his midfielder above the £100m mark, which he will hope deters any potential suitors.

Should Villa slip out of the Champions League places between now and the end of the season while failing to win a trophy, the Brazilian may decide a move to Arsenal could be the next stage in his career and this is something the 52-year-old must be prepared for.

A move for Palacios makes perfect sense as he could emerge as an excellent replacement for Luiz, while he also could be Emery’s own Declan Rice, such is his playing style.

Exequiel Palacios’ style of play

According to WhoScored, the Argentinian likes to tackle often and plays short passes regularly, aiming to dictate the play during matches, and this combative nature combined with a solid passing ability could see him fit into the Villa midfield.

Indeed, his strengths are passing, tackling and ball interception and, while he may not score as much as Luiz, his defensive attributes more than make up for this, hence the comparison to Rice.

The Englishman has impressed since making the move to Arsenal from West Ham United last summer, taking his game to new levels, especially in the Champions League, averaging a 90% pass success rate per game along with winning 65% of his ground duels and losing possession just 7.8 times per match.

According to FBref, Rice is currently the fourth-most comparable player to Palacios and, given their respective defensive and passing abilities, the Leverkusen midfielder could be a major transfer coup should Villa secure his signature.

This season, the pair have registered similar statistics with regard to goals and assists domestically (both five each), pass success rate per 90 (91.6% vs 90.6%), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.67 vs 2.03) and tackles won (28 vs 24), clearly indicating that they have shone across a range of performance metrics specific to their position.

Not only that, but Palacios currently ranks in the top 1% for passes attempted per 90 (87.4) when compared to his positional peers across similar leagues, while even ranking in the top 4% for tackles per 90 (3.33) and the top 5% for interceptions per 90 (1.71), showcasing his talents when compared to fellow peers in the big European leagues.

joshua-kimmich-declan-rice-liverpool

The midfielder was hailed as a “special footballer” by head of scouting for InsightMrkt Andy McGregor back in 2019 before he made his mark in Europe, and he has since developed into one of the best players in his position across the continent.

£51m may sound like a lot on the surface, and it could require Emery to move on a player or two in order to comply with the financial fair play regulations, but if he is going to move on Luiz potentially for a fee in excess of £100m, then the Argentinian must be the ideal replacement.

The Spaniard is in the middle of building something big at Villa Park and the ability to secure big profits on players when they are at the peak of their powers along with signing replacements for half the price could be imperative to any future success.

Palacios has demonstrated his abilities in one of the toughest leagues in Europe and a move to the Premier League is clearly the next step for the World Cup winner.

Reporter says Newcastle target’s name is "bubbling away" behind the scenes

Much of Newcastle United's January transfer window has been centred around potential departures, as they look to balance the books and stay within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. However, into the final week of the winter window, the Magpies could turn their attention to a surprising reinforcement.

Newcastle transfer news

So far this month, and more so in the last week, we've seen Miguel Almiron heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia side Al-Shabab, Callum Wilson linked with a number of Premier League clubs in a deal worth £18m, and Kieran Trippier linked with a winter switch to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Yet, as the deadline approaches, none of the aforementioned stars have sealed an exit away from St James' Park. Instead, Eddie Howe could welcome a bargain transfer to reinforce his midfield.

According to Aaron Stokes, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a name being discussed behind the scenes at St James' Park by Newcastle. The reporter told The Chronicle: "There's one name that has been bubbling away under the surface and that is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg."

The Premier League's profit and sustainability rules state that clubs are only allowed to record a loss of £105m in the space of three seasons. Newcastle's loss in that time reportedly stands at £155m. And although investment into the women's team, charity foundation and academy don't count towards the final figure, PIF are certainly walking a fine line.

Given Hojbjerg's struggle for game time under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, the Dane is certainly in need of a move away this month, and Newcastle could offer him exactly that. It's a deal that could suit the Magpies too, as they look to avoid spending big whilst still welcoming key additions.

"Important" Hojbjerg can provide short-term solution

With summer signing Sandro Tonali still serving his long-term ban for breaching betting rules and Joelinton now sidelined with a long-term injury, Newcastle have been left short on options in midfield. But that's where a player of Hojbjerg's experience can come in. The Denmark international is a player who has played on the biggest stage and one who has earned the praise of Postecoglou, despite falling down the pecking order.

Postecoglou said via The Independent: “I don’t think there was any time during the transfer window where I thought Pierre would move,” Postecoglou insisted. The discussions I had with him were that he was here and wanted to contribute, he wanted to be part of what we were building.

“It is obvious someone that has played regularly would have wanted to play more but ultimately our performances have been strong and he has had to bide his time. He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late. He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us."

Chelsea must regret selling £58m flop who’s now outscoring Cole Palmer

It's impossible to know which Chelsea will show up these days.

Is it going to be the Chelsea who lost 4-1 to Liverpool and 4-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in back-to-back Premier League games? Or the Chelsea who beat a formidable Aston Villa 3-1 away from home in the FA Cup before doing the same to Crystal Palace in the next game?

Mauricio Pochettino clearly has some talent in his side, but if he can't get them to show it consistently, he might not be in the dugout for much longer.

This inconsistency is made all the more frustrating by the fact that one of their former players, who many considered a flop, has been a consistent goalscorer since leaving West London and has actually even outscored Cole Palmer this season.

Chelsea's club record signing in 2017

The player in question is none other than Spain international and former club-record signing Alvaro Morata.

The Spaniard signed for Blues in July of that year for around £60m after enjoying a fruitful 2016/17 season at Real Madrid, in which he scored 20 goals and provided six assists in 43 appearances for Los Blancos.

Unfortunately for the Chelsea faithful, he would never prove to be this effective in London, and while he did manage to score 15 goals and provide six assists in the 2017/18 season, this was as good as it was going to get.

The following season, he scored just nine goals in his 24 appearances for the Pensioners before he moved to Atlético Madrid on loan in January, where he managed six goals and one assist in 17 appearances.

Alvaro Morata

While his overall record of 24 goals and six assists for the Blues wasn't horrendous, he was seen by many fans and pundits alike as an abject failure, with Rio Ferdinand saying on BT Sport after the 2018 Community Shield that (via Football 365) "from a centre half's point of view, he does not scare you" while Richard Dunne was even harsher, claiming the Spaniard was "a disgrace up front, he was awful."

So, with underwhelming performances and scathing reviews, the Madrid-born forward made his move to Atleti permanent in the summer of 2019 for £58m, although the West Londoners could undoubtedly do with his goals this season.

Morata's stats after leaving Chelsea

Now, life after Chelsea wasn't necessarily all plain sailing for Morata, as his first full season back in Spain was only marginally better than his first year in England, with 16 goals and five assists coming in his 44 games for Los Colchoneros.

It was this middling return that saw him sent back to Juventus on loan for two seasons so that Atleti could sign Luis Suárez, and while some players might've downed tools at the idea of being moved on once again, the former Real Madrid youngster put his head down and enjoyed a brilliant two years in Turin.

In his first season, he scored 20 goals and provided 12 assists in 44 appearances before scoring 12 goals and registering nine assists in 48 games the following season, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.73 games for the Old Lady.

Following the end of his two-year loan deal, the "prolific" number nine, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, returned to Atlético and provided 18 goal involvements in 45 appearances for Diego Simeone's side last season.

Alvaro Morata's stats this season

While Morata's output across the four seasons following his move to Atlético is impressive, his performances this season have bordered on world-class.

The 31-year-old has seemingly reached a whole new level this campaign and has already found the back of the net 19 times and provided three assists in just 33 appearances.

Unfortunately for fans and Morata himself, he is currently set to miss up to ten games with a knee ligament injury, but should he be back by the end of next month – as he's expected to be – then there is no reason he couldn't end the season with 30 goal involvements.

Simeone clearly shares this sentiment, as in November, on the Spanish podcast El Larguero (via GOAL), the Argentine claimed: "Alvaro Morata is on par with Erling Haaland. In terms of goals and his numbers, he can certainly be compared to him."

While that comparison might be a step too far, Morata has enjoyed an impressive few years bouncing between Juventus and Atlético, and while he might not be the best striker in the world, his 19 goals would see him top Chelsea's squad if he was still in England

The top scorer in Pochettino's squad at the moment is arguably one of the few Chelsea players who will end this season with their stock higher than it was at the start, Palmer.

The former Manchester City prodigy has found the back of the net on 12 occasions across all competitions this season, and while that is undeniably impressive for anyone in their first season at a new club, it's even more remarkable considering he's just 21 years old.

However, that is still a considerably lower goal tally than Morata's and considering the next highest goalscorer in the team is Nicolas Jackson with nine goals, the Blues are clearly crying out for a new clinical number nine this summer.

Chelsea star with 144 touches was even better than Gallagher vs Palace

Another magnificent performance from the 23-year-old.

ByEthan Lamb Feb 13, 2024

Ultimately, the Blues might have thought they were doing the right thing selling Morata when they did, but he has since proven himself in both La Liga and Serie A, and with Chelsea's current goalscoring woes, Pochettino would probably love to have him at his disposal.
