Arsenal make out-of-window bid to sign World Cup ace ahead of Barcelona

Arsenal have made an out-of-window offer to sign a 2022 World Cup player ahead of Barcelona.

Arteta and Edu making summer transfer plans

The Gunners have been in sensational form since the turn of the year, winning their last six Premier League games while bagging an impressive 25 goals in that period.

However, in the background, manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu continue to work on how best to strengthen Arsenal's ranks this summer – and hopefully for a defence of their title.

Widespread reports suggest Arsenal want to sign a new striker and there are suggestions that a new central midfielder is on Arteta's agenda as well.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz was heavily linked in the build-up to January, and Arsenal could apparently make a move for the Brazilian this summer. Another central midfield ace to be mentioned is Everton star Amadou Onana.

The 22-year-old, who's made 20 league appearances for the Toffees as a mainstay under Sean Dyche, has been tipped for a "big future" by his manager.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

“I thought him (Onana) and Jimmy [Garner] were excellent last night, had good games at the weekend in slightly different roles and yet again, open-mindedness from two different players who are growing and maturing in the Premier League," said Dyche earlier this season.

"It’s the way the game has gone, people were remarking about it a few weeks ago. But I said: ‘If that player was €2 million, everyone would say he’s a young player see how he goes’.

"But put a big price on it, the demand goes up immediately. They’re young in their true understanding of the Premier League, they have a massive future in front of them.”

There's been an update on Arsenal's links to the Belgian, who featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Arsenal make out-of-window offer for Onana

Spanish news outlet Sport now claim that Arsenal have made an out-of-window offer for Onana in an effort to beat the likes of Barcelona and Man United.

The La Liga champions are only willing to pay a set fee, and not the £51 million requested by Everton, but it is believed both Arteta's side and The Red Devils can match this figure.

This could hand them a distinct advantage over Xavi's side in the race for Onana, coming after former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez called him a "very exciting" player.

“Really exciting footballer,” said Martinez to Sky Sports.

“I know that sometimes when we speak about players, it’s very difficult to measure their potential. I think we are talking about a 20-year-old boy, who is probably one of the most talented at that age in European football, and that’s how excited we are in Belgium."

Daniel Hughes guides nervy chase after Harry Conway's ten-wicket haul

Michael Neser and Billy Stanlake reduced New South Wales to 5 for 53 as they chased 134

The Report by Andrew McGlashan13-Oct-2019Harry Conway took career-best match figures of 10 for 56 but New South Wales needed Daniel Hughes’ composed 66 to secure a hard-fought five-wicket win at the Gabba it what became a tricky chase.Conway’s second-innings haul of 5 for 39 – to follow 5 for 17 on the opening day – left New South Wales a target of 134. David Warner fell for a first-ball duck, edging low to third slip off Michael Neser, and after lunch the chase fell to 5 for 53.Steven Smith was caught behind off the impressive Neser, who added Moises Henriques in similar manner. Billy Stanlake then made an impression, removing Nick Larkin and Nick Bertus in the space of three balls, and with half the side out and 81 still needed, Queensland were sensing a notable turnaround. However, Hughes, who was in sparkling form during the Marsh Cup, played the testing situation nervelessly as he reached a 93-ball half-century alongside captain Peter Nevill, who was unbeaten on 31 in a match-winning stand of 81.Queensland had resumed on 5 for 186 and Trent Copeland made the breakthrough when he hooped one back at Jimmy Peirson, who shouldered arms. Ten runs later came the key wicket, when Mitchell Starc struck his only blow of the match by having Marnus Labuschagne caught behind shortly after he had passed fifty for the second time in the game.New South Wales were then frustrated by a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket between Neser and Cameron Gannon before Conway got into the act. Neser popped a leading edge to mid-off, Mark Steketee was sharply held at second slip by Smith, and Stanlake was yorked first ball. While Conway led his team-mates off the field with ten wickets to his name, Starc finished the match with figures of 39-10-129-1. With Copeland and Sean Abbott having also bowled well, New South Wales could face a tricky selection decision for their next match at the SCG if Nathan Lyon is available.

Can top-ranked Pakistan avoid whitewash against second-string Sri Lanka?

Of the issues the hosts must sort, the top-order problems seem the most pressing

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando08-Oct-2019

Big PictureYes, even the first-string Sri Lanka had lost their four most-recent T20I series, and sure, Pakistan topped the rankings, but there are no two sides that revel quite as much in chaos as these two, so in some ways, a comfortable series victory for the underdogs is not a huge surprise. The two matches so far have followed a remarkably similar script. Sri Lanka have got a half-century and a big partnership from their top three, and then a strong finish. Their quicks have then struck early blows, and despite the occasional good partnership from Pakistan, Sri Lanka have managed to keep the required rate climbing through the middle overs. In the first match, Pakistan’s last seven wickets fell for 33. In the second, their last five went down for 20.The two players catching the most heat so far have been Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad, who have produced four awful innings between them. Akmal’s successive golden ducks have basically been an invitation for a punchline. Shehzad has arguably been even worse, chewing up 25 Powerplay deliveries for his 17 runs across the two games. Babar Azam’s rare failures haven’t helped either, nor has the fitful form of the rest of the middle order.A whitewash will be a coup for Sri Lanka, and a significant early obstacle for the new lord commander of Pakistan cricket, Misbah-ul-Haq. Of the issues the hosts must sort, the top-order problems seem the most pressing.Form guidePakistan LLLWL (completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WWWLLIn the spotlightPart of Pakistan’s good T20I form in 2018 had been down to the bowlers, and Mohammad Amir had as good a year as anyone, going at 6.57 in nine appearances last year, taking 14 wickets at 15.50. He had not gone wicketless in eight previous T20Is before this series but has now failed to take a wicket through the first two matches in Lahore. With a confident opposition top three to contend with, Pakistan need their quicks to fire in the last match. In all four of Sri Lanka’s innings on tour, Dasun Shanaka has played good knocks befitting the situation, finding late boundaries when Sri Lanka are looking to finish fast, and rebuilding when they have lost early wickets. He had been disappointed to miss out on a World Cup spot but has perhaps now done enough to firm up a place in the first-choice XI in both limited-overs formats.Team newsIftikhar Ahmed may come in for the run-less Akmal. Perhaps Pakistan will also consider Haris Sohail instead of Shehzad.Pakistan (possible): 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Ahmed Shehzad, 4 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Asif Ali, 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Mohammad HasnainAlthough ordinarily a team might be tempted to trial inexperienced players once a series has been sewn up, a whitewash will mean a lot to this Sri Lanka team, and they are unlikely to change their side.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 4 Shehan Jayasuriya, 5 Minod Bhanuka (wk), 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Lakshan Sandakan, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Nuwan PradeepPitch and conditionsThere has been a little dew around in Lahore, but not so much that it has had a substantial effect on the game. The pitch is expected to be decent for batting again.Stats and trivia Amir’s 0 for 40 on Monday were his worst figures since the 2016 T20 World Cup. Seven members of Sri Lanka’s XI had played fewer than ten T20s at the start of the series. Sri Lanka have never won a T20I series 3-0.

Ange told £15m forward may decide to join Tottenham as reason shared

Tottenham have been told that an in-form forward with eight goals and six assists in his league could decide to join Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs apparently in pole position to sign him as things stand.

Spurs eyeing new forward for Postecoglou this summer

The Lilywhites, according to reliable media sources in the past week, are keen to add a new forward as their major signing for the summer window.

Tottenham "ever closer to closing" transfer with Paratici involved

They could get him for a bargain fee.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 1, 2024

Indeed, journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent wrote very recently that Tottenham have their eyes on Pedro Neto and Eberechi Eze as targets in this regard, with other noteworthy reporters like Fabrizio Romano backing interest in the former.

While Postecoglou has an abundance of wingers at his disposal, namely Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Timo Werner, there are concerns the latter won't be able to add a consistent goalscoring threat.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham.

The German was on target for the first time in his Tottenham career against Crystal Palace at the weekend, scoring his only goal for the club so far, but also missed a gaping chance to open the scoring when Sam Johnstone thwarted Werner's attempt to round him.

It is currently unclear whether Tottenham will activate the buy-option in his contract, but the rumours surrounding a new star winger this summer is perhaps an indicator they're weighing alternatives.

Another in-form wide forward to be linked is Hull City star Jaden Philogene.

The Englishman, who's been terrific form for the Tigers this season, boasts 14 Championship goal contributions – and it is believed that Tottenham are current favourites to sign Philogene.

Alan Hutton says Philogene may decide to join Tottenham

Speaking to Aston Villa News, commenting on the 22-year-old's future, former Tottenham defender and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has suggested Philogene may decide to join Spurs – despite Villa holding the advantage of a £15 million buy-back clause.

“Fair play to him, he’s left and gone to Hull and done really well and now other teams are looking and he might feel as though he doesn’t want to go back, he’ll want to move forward in his career and try something else.

“Obviously, Tottenham under Ange have been a breath of fresh air so that might be something that he may feel suits him better than going backwards.”

Jaden Philogene-Bidace

Philogene is rated very highly by those around Hull City, like podcaster Ant Northgraves, who has tipped the young attacker for England one day and believes he is simply "astonishing".

“I think Jaden Philogene definitely has the ability and the confidence to step up to a Premier League team regularly," said Northgraves to Football League World.

Arsenal released their next Saka as a boy; now he’s dominating the PL

Arsenal are enjoying another brilliant season in the Premier League under former player Mikel Arteta, with the Gunners currently sitting just two points off leaders Liverpool.

Arteta's side have only lost four times in the league so far this campaign, with the Gunners boasting the best defensive record in the division – conceding just 22 times in the 25 league games so far this season.

However, in recent games, Arsenal have been just as impressive in the final third as they have been defensively. During the last two encounters, Arteta's side have kept two clean sheets but have also scored 11 times after a 6-0 win over West Ham and a 5-0 win against Burnley on Saturday.

Despite their impressive tally in front of goal, the club might've missed a trick with another attacking player who was at the club during his younger years; Michael Olise.

Michael Olise's time at Arsenal

Unbeknownst to some, the dazzling Frenchman actually spent a brief period at the Hale End Academy as a youngster.

Telling the BBC, youth coach Sean Conlon stated: "It wasn't that he was particularly big or strong; it was the efficiency of his movements. He was very elegant, a graceful runner. He glided across the pitch. There was ease about the way he did things.

"At the time he was just in at Arsenal. Then in the U8s season he joined various development centres as well as us and he became more polished. He was so slight as a youngster, he needed game intelligence."

Olise subsequently joined Chelsea's academy, where he was until the age of 14 before making his name at Reading in the Championship.

Olise's time at Palace

Now aged 22, the French winger plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League – with the attacker attracting interest from multiple other English sides.

Manchester United have been the side that have been linked with Olise most, with the Red Devils rumoured to be wanting to sign the Palace forward for a fee in the region of £60m.

Olise has made 82 appearances for Palace, scoring 12 times and assisting another 22 since his £8m move to Selhurst Park back in July 2021.

The right-sided forward has impressed with his ability to cut inside on his stronger left foot, with Olise's displays similar to that of current Arsenal star boy Bukayo Saka.

His performances for Roy Hodgson's side has seen his market value skyrocket, with the 22-year-old now worth £42.5m as per Transfermarkt, and more than capable of making the jump to being a first-team starter for a big six Premier League side.

How Olise compares to Bukayo Saka

Saka has taken his game to the next level under Arteta this campaign, scoring 12 times with eight assists in his 24 Premier League appearances – the highest total of anyone in the Arsenal side.

The Hale End Academy graduate has been crucial in the club's attempt to win a first league title since the invincible campaign, with Saka's market value now reaching an astronomical £102.5m.

When comparing Saka to Olise this season, the Crystal Palace winger beats the Arsenal man in multiple key areas as a similarly left-footed player cutting in off the right-hand side.

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

Olise has averaged 4.4 progressive passes per 90, with Saka unable to match his tally, with the Englishman trailing Palace's winger by 0.6 per game. Saka also trails Olise for successful take-ons per 90, with the Hale End Academy product averaging 1.8 compared to the Frenchman's tally of 2.4.

Whilst Saka blows Olise out of the water for goals this season, the Palace winger averages more assists per game with his tally of 0.42 per 90 ranking him within the top 4% of attackers in Europe's top five leagues.

Even though the youngster wouldn't play instead of Saka, he certainly would add to the quality of Arsenal's already impressive frontline – with the Gunners potentially missing a trick with the Frenchman when he was at the club as a youngster.

Dan Lawrence showcases talent with ton for Championship challengers Essex

Essex 302 for 6 (Lawrence 147, ten Doeschate 78*) lead Surrey 174 (Porter 5-62, Cook 5-53) by 128 runs
Dan Lawrence has fallen off the England radar somewhat since he caused so much excitement as a 17-year-old with a maiden Championship hundred against Surrey. More than four years on, he treated the same county to a reminder of the talent that might yet win him England recognition and quickened Essex’s Championship challenge in the process. While county matches around the country were careering ahead at a startling rate on mid-September surfaces, Lawrence produced one of the more considered innings seen at Chelmsford late in a season that has been largely fought out in bowler-orientated conditions. After Surrey lost their last six wickets for 22 in 61 deliveries to be dismissed for 174, many wise observers, the guru himself, Keith Fletcher, among them, felt that an Essex first-innings lead would be a challenging proposition, and when Alastair Cook became the third wicket to fall on 53, it did nothing to assuage the feeling. But Lawrence shared partnerships of 72 in 24 overs with Ravi Bopara and 173 in 40 with Ryan ten Doeschate as Essex reached the close at 302 for 6 with a lead of 128. Even the loss late on of Lawrence for 147, caught at second slip off Morne Morkel, as the light faded could not temper Essex’s satisfaction. Ten Doeschate remains on 78 and has alighted on some batting form when it matters most.Such was Lawrence’s influence that this match might actually go into the final day, a requirement so rare this season that it would be no surprise to discover that Chelmsford Produce Association have already booked the outfield. He had few moments of alarm, although Surrey will rue the chance missed at short midwicket when he was only 9. On 50, he chopped the offspinner Amar Virdi uncomfortably into the leg side and it invited speculation that a pitch which has been designed for the offspin of Simon Harmer was about to grip. But Virdi found little purchase in 24 wicketless overs as Essex took control of the match and Surrey even turned to the leg spin of Scott Borthwick, who had only bowled 15 Championship overs all season – he strained a side while batting in a pre-season match against Durham UCCE – and is still awaiting his first victim after another seven overs here.Reputations are hard to shake off and it was no surprise to find that Lawrence’s thoughtful hundred was marked by a photo of him working a ball to the leg side: it is his stock in trade. But this innings had a different flavour. Surrey examined his off side game and as he reached his first hundred by sweeping a leg side gift from Borthwick through square leg it was only his third leg-side boundary. At that point, 11 fours and a six had come through the offside, 63 runs in all, with Liam Plunkett one of the chief seamers to suffer.Surrey’s ambitions were initially whetted by three wickets for Jordan Clark. Nick Browne was bowled by one that straightened from around the wicket shortly just before lunch, and then saw Tom Westley depart to the first ball after the interval, lbw as he played all around one that might have clipped leg stump. Clark had his third wicket when he swung a ball back into Cook’s back pad: there will have been no need for dressing room replays of that one.Surrey’s innings lasted just 70 minutes on the second morning as they crashed from their overnight 137 for 4 to 174 all out. Jamie Porter and Sam Cook both returned five-wicket hauls as they pounded a better length than they had on the opening day. Surprisingly, Porter’s 5 for 62 was only his second of the season; Cook has had three five-fors in his last four inningsSam Cook celebrates a wicket•Getty Images

Ben Foakes was the most unfortunate Surrey batsmen as he got one from Cook that kept low, but Will Jacks poked at a wide one and Clark’s attempts to produce some 10th-wicket mayhem came to grief with an ugly leg-side slog.Nine Championship hundreds at 22 is a tidy record – Jason Roy has the same number, at 29, and it didn’t prevent him from a place in England’s Test side in the Ashes series. For Lawrence, still only 22, and having recently committed himself to Essex until 2021, there remains time to win that England place. This was a day, though, when for the media at least a hundred also had to share the acclaim with a 50. For half-a-century, Nigel Fuller has followed the affairs of Essex and that landmark was recognised with a lunchtime presentation. Fuller’s assessment is that both Cook and Bopara outdid Lawrence for their potential as a young player; the reputation that Lawrence must live up to, it appears, is not quite as onerous as he might imagine.Fuller also tells that according to no lesser judge than Trevor Bailey, a fixture in England’s side in the 1950s and later a commentator with Test Match Special, believed the finest young Essex-based batsman he ever saw was Stewart Robson, as a 13-year-old in the Essex League at Ilford. Robson turned instead to football with Arsenal and West Ham United. One can only speculate what he might have achieved.

Klopp benches Mac Allister in Liverpool predicted XI vs Sparta Prague

Liverpool's unrelenting calendar shows no sign of abating, with the Premier League table-toppers and Carabao Cup champions travelling to the Czech Republic on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie against Sparta Prague.

Defying the odds to construct a six-game win streak after falling against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium at the start of February, Jurgen Klopp's side are firing on all cylinders despite having been beset with substantial injury problems.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester City, imperious as ever and just one point behind Liverpool in the league table, travel to Anfield for a huge showdown on Sunday afternoon in what will undoubtedly affect Klopp's team selection tomorrow.

Sparta Prague are top of the Czech First League with one defeat all term, dispatching Galatasaray in the previous Europa League stage to set up the tie with Liverpool.

Meet Liverpool's "sublime" teenager who could be their own Phil Foden

This exciting talent hasn’t even made his senior debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side yet.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 4, 2024

Klopp is blessed by the return of Mohamed Salah to training this week, while match-winner Darwin Nunez, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai all featured off the bench at the City Ground.

Shuffling the pack is inevitable, and Klopp could make as many as four changes to his starting XI.

1 GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Who needs Alisson? Caoimhin Kelleher had some big boots to fill after arguably the best goalkeeper in the world was felled by a muscular injury in February, but he's been phenomenal, heroic in the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

Klopp even went so far as to say that the Irishman, aged 25, is "the best no.2 in the world", and he will have the opportunity to raise his stock once again on the continent.

2 RB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Conor Bradley is quite the talent but he's played a lot of football recently and will be expected to start against Pep Guardiola's side, so Joe Gomez should get the nod.

The dynamic defender has played a myriad of roles this season and offers the multi-functional ability to thrive on the right flank of the backline, his natural position.

3 CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Exciting prospects have filtered into Liverpool's first-team in their droves this season but Jarell Quansah was among the first to make an impression.

Described as "absolutely phenomenal" by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the young titan has the qualities to succeed on Merseyside for years to come.

4 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool.

It wouldn't be surprising for Klopp to repeat that trick that he implemented against Southampton one week ago, rotating his preferred defensive axis at half-time.

It's a toss of a coin, but Ibrahima Konate might be in line from the opening whistle, with Virgil van Dijk coming in after the break.

5 LB – Kostas Tsimikas

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

Kostas Tsimikas has struggled with injury in recent months but he whipped in the corner for Van Dijk's trophy-winning goal against Chelsea and will replace Andy Robertson against Sparta Prague.

6 DM – Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo overcame the knock suffered against Chelsea to come off the bench and make an impact against Nottingham Forest.

The Japan international is dogged and industrious and should start both of Liverpool's fixtures this week, though his inclusion from the outset tomorrow will hand Alexis Mac Allister a well-earned rest.

7 CM – Bobby Clark

Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark.

Bobby Clark has taken to life in Liverpool's senior set-up with the assured grace of a player set for success at the highest level. The talented teenager played from the outset against Nottingham Forest last weekend and impressed with his ball-playing, dribbling and confidence.

8 CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai returned from the bench against Forest on Saturday afternoon but you'd need to trek back to the last days of January to find the Hungarian's last starting appearance, scoring during Liverpool's Premier League romping over Chelsea.

Hailed as an "artist" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Szoboszlai has scored five goals and supplied four assists since joining from RB Leipzig last summer, completing 88% of his passes in the Premier League and averaging 1.7 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 6.0 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

9 RW – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

Harvey Elliott's something of a cultured veteran in this Reds squad, having played 37 times in all competitions this season and started the past four fixtures, but it's easy to forget that the creative midfielder is still only 20 years old.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive passes, the top 2% for progressive carries and the top 1% for total shots taken per 90.

He might not be the most prolific but he could certainly be the difference-maker.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz warming up for Liverpool.

Ever-present and effervescent, Luis Diaz is a bundle of energy and while he's been impressive across recent months, he needs to be a bit less wasteful in front of goal, having missed eight 'big chances' in the league this season.

Still, the Colombian's presence down the left channel will be crucial against a Sparta Prague side that might surprise a few and inflict damage on Liverpool's still injury-hit squad.
