Jessy Singh, Sagar Patel dropped from USA squad for UAE tour

USA’s selectors have kept faith with the side’s touring party from Trinidad this past month by picking a largely unchanged 14-man squad for the ODI tour of the UAE. Medium-pacer Jessy Singh and opening batsman Sagar Patel have been dropped from the 16-man group that was selected for the CWI Super50. USA had won two games against Guyana and eventual champions West Indies Emerging team.Jessy took 4 for 51 in his most recent ODI against Namibia on September 20 in Florida. But has struggled to maintain consistency ever since he was one of five players handed a 12-month central contract by USA Cricket in July. He managed just three wickets in four matches during the Super50 tour of Trinidad.USA debutants Cameron Stevenson and Ian Holland put pressure on Jessy’s place during that tour. Stevenson was clocked at a faster pace than Jessy, consistently above 80 mph, while taking seven wickets in five matches including a Man of the Match performance in USA’s 43-run win over West Indies Emerging team.Holland showcased his allround skills in USA’s eight-run win over Guyana with an unbeaten 59 off 37 balls and contributed tidy middle-over spells as well as cagey variations at the death.Sagar, 22, struggled in his first appearance for USA in nearly two years. He managed just 34 runs in three innings on tour before being dropped for USA’s final three matches.USA will play two ODIs each against UAE and Scotland. One match against each opponent will be played in Sharjah before the second round of fixtures takes place at the ICC Academy in Dubai. USA will begin the tour with a warm-up fixture against Scotland on December 6 before their first ODI against UAE on December 8.Squad: Saurabh Netravalkar (capt), Karima Gore, Ian Holland, Akshay Homraj (wk), Elmore Hutchinson, Aaron Jones, Nosthush Kenjige, Xavier Marshall, Monank Patel, Nisarg Patel, Timil Patel, Cameron Stevenson, Steven Taylor, Rusty Theron.

Griezmann out of contract in 2026Atletico not considering new dealFrenchman linked with MLS moveWHAT HAPPENED?

According to Spanish publication Marca, the Spanish side are trying to reduce their wage bill and with Griezmann being one of their top earners – plus the fact he will be 35 when his contract expires in 2026 – they may let his deal run down. On the flip side, the report adds nobody at the club doubts the Frenchman could stay past 2026, but only if he continues to deliver strong performances – and perhaps on reduced wages.

The 33-year-old is an Atletico legend, having scored a record 181 goals while adding 84 assists in 389 appearances. Together, they have won the Europa League, Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Super Cup and been a force on the European stage. But if the former Barcelona man doesn't stay at Atletico, who he has said he wants to be his last team in Europe, a move to MLS does appeal to him.

DID YOU KNOW?

Last year, Griezmann said when quizzed about his long-term future: “Saudi Arabia? I understand those who have to go there; we’re talking about incredible sums of money. Could I go? I have a family, three children. It’s not an easy decision to make. The MLS is still my priority.”

Tottenham 25-year-old now tipped to quit Spurs this summer by pundit

Tottenham "might soon be forced" to replace a 25-year-old member of their squad who's "only their to tick a box", with his future looking far away from N17.

Spurs players who could leave this summer

There are currently many players who don't appear to fit into manager Ange Postecoglou's long-term plans.

The north Londoners are thinking about signing a Harry Kane replacement.

To make room for potential new additions later in the year, the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bryan Gil, who are both being regularly linked with the Spurs exit door, may well depart.

Hojbjerg, once a mainstay under previous head coaches Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho, has been reduced to more of a bit-part squad role during Postecoglou's tenure.

The overwhelming majority of his appearances have come from the substitute's bench, but while the Dane is at least accumulating minutes, the same cannot be said for the likes of Gil and fellow midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Both have largely struggled for game time over 2023/2024, and it isn't unreasonable to think that Tottenham could look to cut their losses on the signings which just haven't worked out overall.

There is also the matter of Tottenham's loanees, as a host of senior players face uncertain futures upon returning to Hotspur Way this summer. Technical director Johan Lange may have to find buyers for Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Sergio Reguilon and Djed Spence, while reports suggest there is a strong chance Joe Rodon joins Leeds permanently.

Another curious case is that of back up keeper and Spurs academy product Brandon Austin, who has already turned 25 years of age.

Austin tipped for Tottenham exit as contract winds down

The Englishman, who counts towards Tottenham's homegrown quota, has been included in match-day squads but doesn't appear to seriously be in Postecoglou's thinking for the future project. He hasn't even made his senior debut for the club yet, which is pretty surprising considering his age.

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham says that Spurs may soon be forced to replace Austin, as his contract expires this summer.

“Austin perhaps doesn’t want to sit around forever at Tottenham," said Wenham.

“Right now, he is just ticking a box as a homegrown player in the first-team squad, and he might want to go out there and start playing regularly himself.

“He might have already made the decision not to renew at Tottenham with his contract set to expire this summer, and Spurs might soon be forced to look for a homegrown goalkeeper to take his place in the squad.”

When Austin does move on, it will be interesting to see which suitors become available, as he's not been given a chance to prove his worth at senior level yet.

Dhawan replaced by Shaw and Samson for New Zealand tour

Dhawan, who was first-choice opener prior to a grade two injury to his shoulder, will report to Bangalore for rehabilitation

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-2020Prithvi Shaw could be in line for an ODI debut in New Zealand having replaced the injured Shikhar Dhawan for the three-match series set to begin on February 5. Both teams play a five-match T20I series prior to that, for which Sanju Samson has been picked as the BCCI confirmed Dhawan, who was first-choice opener before a grade two injury to his shoulder, will report to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for rehabilitation.Shaw, who made a Test century on debut in 2018, is already in New Zealand with the India A team and has been in excellent form. The 20-year old opener struck a compelling 150 against New Zealand A in a warm-up game on Sunday to follow a double-hundred for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. He did suffer a minor injury scare a few weeks ago, having fallen on his shoulder while fielding, but judging by that hundred in Lincoln, which included 22 fours and two sixes, there appears to be little discomfort.Prithvi Shaw has been called up to India’s ODI squad for the first time•ESPNcricinfo LtdShaw has been on an upward track since his return from doping violation in November 2019. His first innings back was a half-century which he celebrated by pointing at his back and then making a talking gesture. The BCCI, while imposing a back-dated sanction, said Shaw had accidentally taken a forbidden substance commonly found in cough syrups. Should he make it to the XI during this three-match series against New Zealand, he will make his ODI debut in the same place where he led India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2017. Outside of his inclusion, India kept faith in the same squad that beat Australia 2-1 at home.Samson, meanwhile, has been on the fringes of national selection for several years. The wicketkeeper batsman played his first international in July 2015 and that had been his only game for India until earlier this month when he made the squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Both Samson and Shaw may yet be confined to the reserves considering India still have Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to open the batting and Rishabh Pant to keep wicket.Sanju Samson has replaced the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India’s T20I squad•ESPNcricinfo LtdMohammed Shami is the only other addition to the T20I squad that beat Sri Lanka 2-0. He has shown great improvement in his limited-overs skills, some of which were display on his last tour of New Zealand when he picked up nine wickets from four ODIs. He joined a fast-bowling line-up which includes Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur. India were spoiled for choice in the spin department as well with Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar all part of the squad for the five-match T20I series.

Ex-Everton scout explains why Dele Alli was always a 'strange' signing as injury-plagued midfielder is challenged to 'prove he wants' new contract at Goodison Park

An ex-Everton scout has explained why Dele Alli signing for the club was always "strange", insisting he needs to up his game to earn a new deal.

  • Dele's Everton contract expired in June
  • Training with Toffees as he targets new deal
  • Ex-club scout says Dele signing was "strange"
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 37-cap England international swapped Tottenham for Everton in January 2022 but has only played 13 times for the Toffees since then. Earlier this summer, his contract at the Merseyside outfit expired and he is yet to sign a new deal with Sean Dyche's men, despite training with them in pre-season – after a string of injuries. Now, former Everton scout Bryan King has given his thoughts on this whole episode, while challenging the 28-year-old to "prove he wants" a new deal at Goodison Park.

    WHAT THE EX-EVERTON SCOUT SAID

King told Goodison News: “If Everton are prepared to get him fit, he has then got to get back to playing. It is one thing training and getting fit, but he has got to get back into match situations. Therefore decisions will still be pending. It is a strange situation. It has been strange ever since he went to Everton, I could never see him being an Everton player.

"I spoke to several people with big Everton connections, and they were also surprised the club had brought him in. He is not the sort of player who looks up for a relegation fight. However, he deserves a chance, if he is prepared to train then the next step will be matches and reintegrating into the squad. It will be interesting to see how the squad accepts him. For Dyche, if they can get him back, it could prove to be a very good free-transfer signing. Alli just needs to prove that he wants it.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Everton reached an agreement with Tottenham to waive paying a further fee when offering Dele a new contract. However, the former Spurs star may not be offered a new deal as he looks to get his career back on track. Dele made headlines in 2023 when he spoke about his childhood, time spent in rehab and mental health issues.

    WHAT NEXT?

Everton manager Dyche has revealed Dele is still some way off returning to action, despite training with the squad during pre-season.

“Dele is getting fitter but only really just breaking into training. Forgetting about the contact situation. He’s generally with us and getting fitter," he said.

The Toffees are due to open their new Premier League campaign at home to Brighton on August 17.

Contact made: Wolves make first move to sign 26 y/o ahead of Aston Villa

Wolves have made their first move to sign a new player ahead of a number of Premier League rivals, according to a new report.

Wolves planning for summer transfer window

Those at Molineux and Gary O‘Neil may well be looking ahead to the 2024/25 season, with the club’s push for European football this season now faltering.

Tuesday evening’s 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Burnley has seen Wolves drop points in three of their last four fixtures, with a potential battle now on for a top-half finish.

O’Neil once again vented his frustrations at the club’s business in the January transfer window following the point at Turf Moor.

There have been transfer targets mentioned ahead of the summer, especially in attack. Wolves are expected to sign teenage forward Stephano Carrillo from Mexican side Santos Laguna and they are also readying an offer to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal ahead of Brentford and Crystal Palace.

The Old Gold are also in pole position to sign Southampton striker Che Adams, but there could also be additions at the back going off a new update.

Wolves make contact to sign new goalkeeper

According to reports in Spain in the last 48 hours, relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have made contact to sign UD Las Palmas goalkeeper Alvaro Valles.

The 26-year-old has been linked with rivals Aston Villa, as well as Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, but it is Wolves who have made first contacts over a potential deal.

Valles, who was previously on the books with Real Betis, has been with Las Palmas since 2018 and has been a regular in recent years.

In fact, the shot-stopper helped Las Palmas win promotion to La Liga with 19 clean sheets in 34 appearances, and he has also impressed in the Spanish top flight.

For example, his Transfermarkt valuation stood at just €1m less than 12 months ago, but that figure has now rocketed to a career-high €15m. Valles also recently spoke about the possibility of being called up by Spain ahead of Euro 2024 following his eye-catching displays.

“I’m not aware of anything. I’m focused on the collective success of the team. We all want to finish as high as possible in the standings, to make history. Individual awards, if they come, are welcome. But the main thing for me is the collective. Praise can be debilitating, that’s why I always keep my feet on the ground.”

A move to Molineux this summer looks like it could be one to watch, with Valles potentially the long-term successor to Jose Sa.

Heather Knight sees England to 3-0 series win over Pakistan

Pakistan pushed England close but could not prevent defeat and a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series in Kuala Lumpur. Javeria Khan top-scored in the match with 57, but England kept a grip on the scoring rate to close out the game.England, who rested Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt for the final game, produced an all-round effort with bat and ball. Captain Heather Knight made 43 from 31 balls and the rest of the top five all chipped in with solid contributions, before Anya Shrusbole, Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone shared five wickets to disrupt Pakistan’s chase. The tour also allowed England’s new head coach, Lisa Keightley, who is due to take up the role in January, to have a first look at the players after she joined up with the team following the conclusion of the Women’s Big Bash League.”I think it’s been a good tour for us,” Knight said. “We asked batters to get big runs and that’s happened across both the ODI and the IT20 series.”I think we’ve found some new players, as well. Sarah Glenn has really put her hand up and that’s great for us, it adds to the competition for places and makes us stronger as a group.”I’ve been proud of how we’ve maintained our high standards, especially in the field – which is something we’ve been working hard on.”It’s been great to spend time with Lisa and get chatting to her about how she sees the plans moving forward. We’re looking forward to the new year and the challenge of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.”After Danni Wyatt had lashed 25 off 15 to get England going, the main plank of the innings was provided by an 81-run partnership between Knight and Amy Jones. Knight hit three sixes in her innings, and while both fell in consecutive overs, Fran Wilson and Tammy Beaumont added another fifty stand in the closing overs.Pakistan lost both openers inside the Powerplay, and were struggling at just past the halfway way point when Bismah Maroof was stumped off Glenn to leave them 68 for 3. Javeria’s measured innings kept them in the hunt but despite Sidra Nawaz cracking 19 off 7 balls at the end, Pakistan had left themselves too much to do.

Arteta must now drop Jorginho and unleash "special" Arsenal talent

This afternoon, Arsenal welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium, where they will look to win their sixth Premier League home game in a row.

Mikel Arteta’s side go into the game off the back of a relatively decent 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Some changes are expected to be made from the mid-week European clash, even though a victory would see the Gunners return to the top of the table.

Indeed, one player could return to the starting lineup, in turn making Jorginho lose his place.

Why Jorginho must be dropped by Arteta

There’s no two ways about it: Jorginho has now cemented himself as a starter in Arteta’s best team, controlling the game from a deeper role.

The Italian has featured in 21 Premier League games this season, developing a brilliant relationship with Declan Rice at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.

However, against Thomas Tuchel’s side, the 32-year-old struggled to influence the game quite as much as he would have hoped, even being substituted early for Gabriel Jesus.

Over his 67 minutes on the field, the former Chelsea ace had an 85% pass accuracy and won 57% of his ground duels in what was a quiet night for the midfielder, but his potential replacement this weekend will certainly look to impact the tie.

Arteta must drop Martinelli and unleash Arsenal's "exquisite" gamechanger

The sensationally talented star should take the youngster’s spot for the next few games.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 14, 2024 The man to replace Jorginho against Aston Villa

Emile Smith Rowe’s never-ending injury crisis has continued into the 2023/24 campaign, missing ten games through setbacks and halting his progress once again.

However, he’s slowly getting back up to speed after his return, with the 23-year-old making 11 league appearances this term, but in truth, all but three of them have been short cameos.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

Arteta has been extremely cautious when managing his minutes, sitting on the bench in six of Arsenal’s last seven matches across all competitions.

However, in the one game he did feature in, he was extremely impressive, which was in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Luton Town at the start of this month.

Taking home the player of the match award, Smith-Rowe was almost back to his usual self, adding energy, creativity, and skill to the Arsenal setup, with Arteta full of praise for the attacking midfielder, saying: "When Emile Smith-Rowe is in that moment… guys, it's very difficult to stop him".

"He won a lot of duels and he was thinking with that killer instinct to play forward and to make things happen."

The “special” talent, as dubbed by Jamie Carragher, clearly wanted to impress, with his two key passes and two shots supporting the boss’ statements.

That said, the number ten wasn’t too eager, often making the right decision in possession and working extremely hard to regain the ball for his side, which was almost the best aspect of his game on the day.

Smith-Rowe’s return would see him feature in the left-sided midfield role, ultimately meaning that Rice will drop into his usual defensive midfield role.

The winner of the midfield battle during this game will have a huge say in the final outcome against Unai Emery's men, and with Douglas Luiz unavailable due to suspension, the Spaniard will fancy his chances of playing a more creative star in the middle of the field.

Overall, with the second leg of the Champions League around the corner, Jorginho should be handed a rest, and out of all the potential replacements, Smith Rowe deserves a shot.
