Jack Leach feared for his life after bout of sepsis on New Zealand tour

Left-arm spinner Jack Leach has revealed that he feared for his life after contracting sepsis on England’s tour of New Zealand, admitting there was a point at which he thought to himself: “Don’t fall asleep because you might not wake up”.Leach suffers from Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease that requires him to take regular medication which weakens his immune system. After playing in the first Test of England’s series in New Zealand, he contracted gastroenteritis, and was later hospitalised with a bout of sepsis caused by his body’s response to the illness.ALSO READ: Sickness concerns mean no handshakes for England in Sri Lanka“I didn’t know too much about it at the time, how serious it could be, but I remember feeling very, very ill,” Leach told the PA news agency.”I remember thinking, ‘Don’t fall asleep because you might not wake up’. It was that serious in terms of how I was feeling.”I was out of it, really. My blood pressure was dropping quickly, my heart-rate was 190 and my temperature was 40 degrees. That’s when they called an ambulance and got me to hospital. Once I got there, got the antibiotics in my arm and on to a drip, I started to feel better quite quickly but it still took a couple of nights in hospital and I was probably still recovering when I flew back from New Zealand. It took longer to get over than I thought.”Leach returned to the UK after that tour before flying out to South Africa with the rest of the England squad, but his preparations ahead of that series were blighted as he was affected badly by the sickness bug that went around the touring party.”I picked up a couple of things out there and my body couldn’t cope with it,” he said.”Other people got ill but I struggled to fight it off as well as a healthy person. The medication I’m on for Crohn’s weakens my immune system, so it is just a bit more of a struggle.”You can start to feel fine in general but playing high-level sport is a completely different thing and that’s probably something I didn’t think about enough.”As sportsmen we try to push through pain. You don’t want to be weak mentally or physically but unfortunately that was the situation: I was weak physically. With your health you sometimes have to take a step back.”England have taken precautions in an attempt to ensure that their squad is not affected by illness on their tour of Sri Lanka, having landed on Tuesday, with captain Joe Root confirming the players would not be shaking hands with one another and medical staff giving out ‘immunity packs’.And while the global crisis surrounding the outbreak of coronavirus is a concern, Leach admitted that he was reassured by the fact that only one case has been confirmed in Sri Lanka so far.”I’ve come to a safer place,” Leach said. “I’ve been nervous in England but I feel fine here.”I guess I am a little bit more concerned than others. These things affect the older generation a bit more but with the medication I’m on, my immune system might be similar to that. We’ve been given packs to use with wipes, hand sanitiser, we’re drinking bottled water. I just have to do the right things and keep my fingers crossed.”Dom Bess came into the England squad as cover for Leach in South Africa•Getty Images

England have coped with Leach’s absence this winter thanks in part to the international emergence of his Somerset team-mate Dom Bess, who impressed in South Africa after being called into the squad as a late replacement. But Leach will have an important role in Sri Lanka, as the only member of the spin trio that took a combined 48 wickets on England’s last tour in 2018-19 still in the squad, with Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid both missing. His involvement in the series briefly looked doubtful on account of a calf injury, but he had been bowling at Taunton and Loughborough before departure and is confident that he will be fit to play.”I had a little setback with my calf a couple of weeks ago but I’m recovering well. I’m still maybe a little bit off but we’ve got a bit of time, so it’s about progressively getting back.”I’ll be bowling in training and see how we go. The main part of the tour is two Test matches and I’ll be doing everything I can to be back for them.”I look back with fond memories on the last tour. It was nice to be part of that with Mo and Adil – I learned a lot from them. It’s a different spin group this time but it’s going to be more of the same in terms of what we do. I’ve definitely got some ideas that helped me last time that I’ll be passing on to the boys. It’s going to be good fun.”

Latest Tottenham injury news, expected return dates, suspensions

With the Premier League slowly getting towards the business end, Tottenham Hotspur are in a huge fight to return to the Champions League after suffering a third defeat in a row in midweek.

Ange Postecoglou will be eager to rally his troops ahead of another tough test away at Liverpool, having just been beaten in two London derbies in the space of a few days.

Football FanCast keeps you updated with all the latest Spurs news on the injury front ahead of their trip to Anfield.

Latest Spurs injury news

Spurs forward Timo Werner

Postecoglou was tight-lipped on any injury concerns ahead of Liverpool, mainly owing to the short turnaround from the Chelsea game. He appeared confident that there would be no major issues, though he did suggest some players were "still feeling the effects of the game".

He was also asked whether he was tempted to rest Son Heung-min, with the captain's last goal from open play coming in March's late win over Luton Town. The boss noted there have been challenges for the South Korean this year and "will find a way to work his way through it".

The Australian confirmed last week that Ben Davies would be out for the rest of the season with a calf injury. The same can be said for Timo Werner, whose hamstring issue means that he may have played his last game in Tottenham colours unless his loan deal is made permanent in the summer.

In terms of those already injured, Oliver Skipp is set to return from a knock that kept him out of the defeat to Arsenal, while Destiny Udogie, Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon all remain longer-term absentees.

Ben Davies – calf

Tottenham defender Ben Davies

Defender Ben Davies was drafted in for the north London derby, which was his first game in over two months. Perhaps this lack of sharpness contributed to his latest injury issue, with the Welshman suffering from a calf problem that Postecoglou expects will keep him out of Spurs' remaining games.

Timo Werner – hamstring

Tottenham forward Timo Werner.

Timo Werner was substituted in the first half against the Gunners last weekend, and after damage to his hamstring was confirmed, Postecoglou was resigned to being without the German for the rest of the campaign. Whether Werner returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium now likely relies on RB Leipzig negotiating a deal with Spurs in the summer over extending his stay in north London.

Oliver Skipp – knock

Oliver Skipp in action for Tottenham

Oliver Skipp hasn't featured since early February as a late substitute in Spurs' draw at Everton.

His recent absence since was down to what Postecoglou described as a "minor knock", with his manager ruling him out of last weekend's derby clash with Arsenal. However, he returned to the bench for the defeat against Chelsea, so should be near enough full fitness.

Destiny Udogie – thigh

Destiny Udogie

The club recently confirmed that Italy international Destiny Udogie had undergone surgery to his left thigh following a training injury.

Ahead of the north London derby, Postecoglou confirmed that his season is over, saying (via Football.london): ""Bit disappointing for him and for us as he has been such an important player for us. So yeah, unfortunately picking up an injury means the end of his season."

Fraser Forster – foot fracture

Fraser Forster is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after fracturing his foot.

At the time of the injury, it looked like it was going to be at least two months before he returned to the bench, but it appears as though next season now looks most likely.

Ryan Sessegnon – hamstring

Ryan Sessegnon.

Ryan Sessegnon's injury troubles continue as he's now set for surgery on a hamstring injury he picked up during an under-21s match.

Ange said this on the full-back's situation back in March: "Obviously, Sess had his hamstring and had to have surgery on that so that was kind of last game."

Manor Solomon – knee

Tottenham Hotspur provided an update on Manor Solomon's injury in October, which read: "It was announced on Thursday (5 October) that our number 27 had suffered a meniscus injury to his right knee in training this week. The forward underwent surgery the same day and has now started his rehabilitation as he looks to get back to full fitness."

And, things still aren't really any better as the winger is still dealing with an issue which Ange provided an update on a few weeks ago:

"No real progress. He's still not comfortable. The medical team are looking at other strategies now."

  • Attacker could play against Wolves
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Portugal international returned to Stamford Bridge, where he spent six months on loan in 2023, from Atletico in a deal worth a reported £45.5 million (€53m/$59m), signing a six-year contract that includes an option to extend for a further 12 months.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After spending last season on loan at Barcelona, Felix appeared likely to join the Catalan club on a permanent basis, but was instead drafted in as Chelsea's 10th summer signing since Maresca took charge after the close of last season. The Italian manager is confident Felix will settle in well upon his return to London and explained what he expects from him.

  • WHAT MARESCA SAID

"For me, he can [play as a No.9] fantastically; dropping in and giving us an extra man when we need more passes, more possession," Maresca said at a press conference. "And then to find the right moment to attack, he can do that very well. He can play as an attacking midfielder, if we need he can play also outside. He can play in different positions."

He added: "Potential, he is a top player, no doubt. I have known Joao for many, many years. Now, working with him day-by-day, I will know him even better. It is a little bit like Misha [Mudryk]; we are going to help them to improve and see if they can give one step forward to reach that kind of level for those players."

    WHAT NEXT FOR FELIX?

Maresca was asked if Felix will be part of the team for the weekend's Premier League match against Wolves. "If he is available, then for sure he can have a chance to play," he replied.

When asked if the attacker is ready to line up for the Blues, he added: "In terms of knowing the way we want to play, probably not yet. In terms of physicality, I think he is ready because he was already playing games there [at Atletico Madrid]. He needs more time to understand the way we want to play but overall I think he can play."

Dane Piedt ends South Africa career to chase American dream

Offspinner, who played nine Tests for South Africa, has signed up for new ‘minor league’ T20 competition

Firdose Moonda27-Mar-2020Dane Piedt, the nine-times capped South African Test offspinner, still harbours hopes of playing at a 50-over World Cup, albeit not for the country of his birth.Piedt will move to the USA in the next few months to be part of the new Minor League T20 tournament, which is due to launch this summer, ending his career at home. And he intends to meet qualifying criteria to play for the USA national team and hopes to be part of their campaign to appear at the ICC’s flagship event.”The USA were given ODI status last year so it’s not completely out of the question,” Piedt told ESPNcricinfo, from his home in Kenilworth in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, on the first day of a three-week nationwide lockdown aimed to slow the spread of the coronavirus. It may be far from the ideal occasion to sign an employment contract that will take Piedt thousands of kilometres away but for him the timing was right. “I just signed the deal this morning but no-one really knows when I will be able to travel. It was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up, financially and for lifestyle reasons, but it was still a tough decision to make.”

In opting to move abroad, Piedt has not only taken himself out of contention for national selection but he has also ended a decade-long association with the Cobras franchise, where he has played throughout his career and is entering the complete unknown. He has never travelled to the USA and doesn’t even know where he will be based in the long term. “I’m a massive basketball fan, so that helps,” Piedt said. “I will have a choice of four cities – New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or Seattle – to live in but the rest will be a surprise.”Piedt has been taking tips from former Warriors seamer Rusty Theron, who helped him secure the deal. Theron has been living in the USA for several years, studied teaching in Miami and made his ODI debut for the country last year. “He has given me some information, especially about the cricket scene there. It’s a decent set-up and I know they have some good cricketers like Xavier Marshall and a few Australians and Indians who played in national Under-19 teams and then moved.”ALSO READ: New York, Chicago, Boston, LA among 22 targeted launch cities for USA T20 competitionMarshall played seven Tests, 24 ODIs and six T20s for West Indies and he along with Theron is the only other former international in the American squad. All that means that Piedt has a realistic chance of pushing for a place in the American national side, something that he can no longer say with regards to South Africa. Despite leading the wickets chart in first-class cricket last summer and finishing in the top 10 in the two seasons before that, Piedt has lost ground to other spinners and sees himself quite far back in the queue.”Shammo [Tabraiz Shamsi] has really made a mark in white-ball cricket and Keshav [Maharaj] has done exceptionally well for the Test side, he has done exactly what the team needs,” Piedt said. “And if you look at the schedule, South Africa are not due to tour the subcontinent again soon and that’s the only place where I might get a game.”That is exactly what happened when Piedt was recalled to the South African side to tour India last September, more than three years after being dropped. Like most of the squad that were blanked 3-0, he had a tough time but returned home to captain the South Africa A side against England and was hopeful of still being in contention for the national side. “Enoch [Nkwe] was the coach at the time and he gave me a call and said I was still in the plans,” Piedt said.Dane Piedt celebrates a wicket off his first ball in Tests•AFPWithout an Mzansi Super League (MSL) deal, that was the last sliver of hope for Piedt to cling to until it became clear everything was changing. In the last two weeks of 2019, South African cricket was overhauled and it became apparent to Piedt his ship had sailed. Unlike the last time he considered walking away – three years ago when he flirted with the idea of a Kolpak contract – this time he waited for an opportunity to come to him. When it did, the Cobras management were the first people he told.”I did it the proper way. I gave the coach [Ashwell Prince] a call and explained it to him and he was very understanding. I explained that this is an opportunity to further my cricketing career,” Piedt said. “It’s something different, a new challenge. I have always been someone who goes against the grain.”Piedt has identified Zubayr Hamza, who led the Cobras in the domestic one-day cup this season and finished as the tournament’s top scorer, and Kyle Verreynne, who made his ODI debut for South Africa against Australia last month, as potential successors for the franchise captaincy. “I’d really like to see the younger guys step up,” he said. And although he will not be around to mentor them, he knows there are some veterans who will. “Someone like Rory Kleinveldt who retired this season, I know will still be involved in cricket here in the Cape when we start up again.”Though the sport was about to head into its off-season in South Africa, the season was clipped right at the end, with the playoffs of the one-day cup and the last two rounds of the first-class competition canceled, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. No teams are training at the moment, leaving professional sportspeople to do “home gym,” as Piedt put until at least April 16, when the lockdown is scheduled to end.Piedt, like millions of other South Africans, is confined to home but his period of isolation did not start too badly. He celebrated 11 months since his wedding with his wife Misha today and is taking the opportunity to enjoy some “quality time,” with her after a busy summer.”I had a lot of commitments this season because I was also working as a commentator so I was away a lot, so now we can have some bonding time,” he said. “We’ve bought five board games and my wife beat me at Scrabble yesterday. Today, we are playing a game called Sequence and my wife thinks I will win at this one because it’s all about luck. And we are trying some new recipes, same as everyone else.”But there’s a cruel twist in all of this. Piedt used to have a dog called Corona, a Husky, named after the beer, who was taken from him two years ago after suffering a stroke. “When I heard the name of the virus, I thought maybe she was paying me back for all the walks I didn’t take her on,” he said. “It’s sad but it’s life. You never know where it will take you next. Like a cricketer’s life. You just never know.”

Sports Minister slams CSA over transformation

Nathi Mthethwa wants more people of colour in leadership positions both in the board and in the team

Firdose Moonda20-Jun-2020Cricket South Africa has come under severe criticism from the country’s minister of sport, art and culture Nathi Mthethwa who questioned the organisation’s commitment to transformation at a parliamentary briefing on Friday. Despite CSA exceeding their transformation targets on the field for the 2018-19 season, Mtethwa was concerned that several senior positions since an overhaul of the board last year were occupied by white men.In December 2019, CSA CEO Thabang Moroe was suspended on allegations of misconduct. His case is ongoing and Dr. Jacques Faul has been in the position of acting CEO since. Under Faul, Graeme Smith was appointed director of cricket, replacing Corrie van Zyl, who occupied the post in interim capacity but was also suspended.Van Zyl has since returned to work, under Smith, who named Mark Boucher the national men’s coach. Boucher displaced Enoch Nkwe, who was working as interim team director and took the South African squad to India, where they were whitewashed 3-0. Nkwe was named as Boucher’s deputy. Boucher also brought in Jacques Kallis as batting consultant and Paul Harris as spin bowling consultant, in addition to Charl Langeveldt (bowling coach) and Justin Ontong (fielding coach). At the parliamentary briefing, CSA President Chris Nenzani was asked if the appointments of Faul, Smith and Boucher represented a regression of the board’s transformation policy given that two of them had replaced black African employees. Nenzani’s response was that the appointments had been made on merit.”I felt insulted with your [Nenzani’s] intervention when you said you only take people on merit,” Mtethwa said. “When we talk of cricket and going to the heart and core‚ you look at the CEO‚ you look at the director of cricket and the coach; you’ll find the deputy being an African.””You look at the batting specialist and you come and say to the nation that there’s nothing wrong and there’s no regression in transformation. I feel particularly insulted. It says that there’s a particular posture that has been taken that says Africans can be elsewhere in other areas that are not core ones. There’s no core area above the top five. It’s only one and that person is the deputy to the coach. I’m not going to be smiling at that kind of statement.”Mtethwa found it incredulous that CSA could not find black African candidates to fill senior roles when it has been 26 years since the official end of Apartheid (1994) and almost three decades (1991) since the country’s black and white cricket boards were unified. “Does it mean that after 26 years‚ there hasn’t been anybody who hasn’t been able to fill one of these positions? The only people with merit are white. I take exception to that.”Since readmission, CSA have had two black African CEOs, Gerald Majola and Thabang Moroe and six (of eight) presidents of colour including Krish Mackerdhuj, Percy Sonn, Norman Arendse, Ray Mali, Mtutuzeli Nyoka and now Nenzani. Apart from Nkwe’s brief stint with the national team, they have had only one other home-grown head coach of colour, Russell Domingo, and only one permanently appointed national captain of colour, Hashim Amla.Although there will be no sanctions against CSA at this point, earlier this month, Mtethwa met with the Eminent Persons Group expressing similar concerns and proposed legislation to address the pace of transformation. “The Minister raised his concern on the leadership and governance matters that have consistently undermined the development and transformation of sport in the country. He highlighted the urgent need for a fundamental discussion of re-imagining sport in the country, a major part of that being transformation,” a sports ministry press release from June 5 said.CSA have long-stated their commitment to transformation and “welcomed” the EPG report when it was released, noting the areas that still needed improvement, especially at school level. “The participation of senior schools from townships (previously disadvantaged black residential areas) amounts to 515 schools of the 1023 participating high schools. The participation of girls in senior schools’ cricket is growing. This growth will accelerate in the foreseeable future,” a CSA statement said. However, the concern lies more at the top where big changes have been made in response to the chaos that engulfed CSA late last year, In the space of a few weeks, their major sponsor Standard Bank opted not to renew their arrangement, three board members resigned and the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) voiced continued unhappiness with the CSA CEO. On December 6, Moroe was suspended, and 10 days later Nkwe was demoted and new appointments made. At the time, an organisation called the Black African Cricket Clubs accused CSA of a whitewash at senior level but Smith responded by providing an assurance of his commitment to transformation.

Free transfer: Celtic eyeing move to sign "massive" £50,000-a-week player

Celtic are in a race for a soon-to-be free agent this summer, who could be perfect for Brendan Rodgers' side ahead of the new season.

Celtic players set to depart

Despite their impending Scottish Premiership success, there could be plenty of change at Celtic this summer as Rodgers continues to try and shape his squad.

Loan pair Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo will return to their parent clubs ahead of a summer of potential permanent Parkhead transfer rumours, while veteran duo James McCarthy and James Forrest will be down to the final 12 months of their deals at Celtic Park, leaving a decision to be made on their future.

One player definitely leaving will be Celtic no.1 Joe Hart, who announced his retirement earlier in the campaign.

Joe Hart

The ex-England no.1 has been an almost ever-present for the Scottish side this season, making 35 appearances in the top-flight and keeping 14 clean sheets in the process, helping his side keep the second meanest defence in the Scottish Premiership, just a goal behind Rangers.

It's not all bad news though. One player who seems to be set to stay is Adam Montgomery, who penned a new deal last week after being strongly linked with a move away from the club. But Rodgers will need to replace Hart and may have found the perfect solution.

Celtic eye free transfer for new goalkeeper

Now, Celtic are reportedly one of the clubs considering a move for soon-to-be free agent Alex McCarthy as a potential replacement for Hart as their new no.1.

That is according to The Daily Mail, who namecheck the Scottish giants as one of the sides keeping an eye on the 34-year-old, though they are joined by Premier League heavyweights Newcastle United and Liverpool as well as "a number of Saudi Arabian clubs".

"Incredible" goalscorer "very keen" to sign for Celtic as talks planned

What a boost this would be for Brendan Rodgers.

ByHenry Jackson May 10, 2024

Having been a backup goalkeeper for much of the season at Southampton, McCarthy has been called upon by Russell Martin in recent weeks after a major injury to no.1 Gavin Bazunu, and pulled off a string of excellent saves in the play-off semi-final first leg to keep a clean sheet against West Brom at The Hawthorns.

After the game, Martin singled the veteran out for praise. "He was massive today, (he has great with) long throws and the way he came and dealt with things. The last two weeks I’ve loved the way we’ve defended. I just don't think anything phases him. He has that laid-back mentality but he really backs himself as a goalkeeper. He has been fantastic."

Though Celtic may not be able to compete financially with the Premier League sides keen on signing McCarthy, they could be able to offer regular first-team football, while Newcastle and Liverpool are both largely on the hunt for a backup option.

He would likely have to take a cut on his wages though, with his £50,000 per week deal at Southampton putting him above the highest earners at Celtic (which is believed to currently be the £37,000 a week taken home by Callum McGregor).

Should he agree to, he could help Celtic kickstart their summer window with a bang.

Clement could ditch Wright in Rangers move for gem with "pace to burn"

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement is just five wins away from potentially leading the club to a stunning treble success during his first season in charge.

The momentum appears to be with Celtic at the moment, but rest assured, the Belgian will be doing everything he can to make sure the season ends with another couple of trophies.

The 50-year-old is already planning ahead for the future, eyeing up a few potential transfer targets this summer…

Rangers transfer news

According to a report from Football Scotland, Raphael Borges Rodrigues has emerged as a potential option for the Light Blues when the transfer window opens.

The 20-year-old is currently playing for Australian side Macarthur, having joined from Melbourne City in 2023.

Rangers are not the only side interested, however, as Coventry City have reportedly contacted the player’s representatives about making a move to the Championship, meaning the Gers certainly have some competition for his signature.

Clement is looking to sign promising young talents who could be sold on in a few years for a significant profit. With this in mind, Rodrigues not only fits the bill, but his arrival could give the manager licence to finally ditch Scott Wright.

How Raphael Borges Rodrigues compares to Wright

The fact that Wright is still being utilised by Clement indicates how poor the squad depth is at the club and this needs to change heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

Since joining the Ibrox side in 2021, Wright has made 113 appearances for the club, yet he has registered only 17 goal contributions – ten goals and seven assists – during that time.

Rangers winger Scott Wright.

When compared to his teammates this term, Wright ranks in a lowly 16th place for shots per game (0.9) in the top flight, along with ranking 22nd for big chances created (one) and 19th for key passes per game (0.6), suggesting that even when he is given a chance, the winger fails to impress.

Rodrigues’ preferred position may be on the left wing, but during his embryonic career thus far, the youngster has operated on the right flank 16 times, scoring twice and grabbing two assists, indicating his flexibility to play on either wing.

He certainly offers a greater threat in the final third than Wright, registering six goals and two assists in 32 matches this season. Compare this to Wright’s two goals in 29 games, and it is clear who has been the most productive.

Journalist Sasch Pisani hailed the winger after watching him live for the first time this season, claiming he “has pace to burn, great feet & a powerful shot.” Which is everything that Clement wants from his wide options.

The 20-year-old averages 1.6 successful dribbles per game along with creating four big chances, proving he can generate plenty of opportunities for his teammates from a wide position.

The Dutch-born Australian youth international certainly looks like he has the talent to shine in Scotland. The question is, could he make the step-up straight away?

If he does join Rangers, it should see Wright – who at one stage looked set for a move to Turkey last summer – swiftly moved on in the process.
