Saka rival: Arsenal plotting to sign "one of the biggest talents" in Europe

We are less than a week away from the return of the Premier League, and after a successful preseason, Arsenal look raring to go.

Mikel Arteta's side wrapped up their summer preparations with a comfortable 2-0 win over French giants Lyon, in which several first-teamers looked seriously impressive, including club talisman Bukayo Saka.

The Hale Ender has only just returned from his short break following the Euros but already looks like a threat. However, to get the most out of him this season, the club must avoid repeating their mistake of playing him into the ground in the last few campaigns.

Fortunately, recent reports have linked the Gunners to one of the most exciting wingers on the continent, who would be the ideal player to provide the Englishman with some extra competition and help the club avoid problems that stem from too much game time.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Arsenal are 'plotting a shock move' to land Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman this summer.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Interestingly, the report has revealed that the Gunners do not intend to purchase the experienced winger but instead secure his services on a season-long loan.

The bad news is that the German club would require the North Londoners to either agree to an obligation or option to buy in at the end of the loan to complete the deal. The good news is that if it's the latter, Edu Gaspar and Co should still have room to return the Frenchman should he not impress in England.

Moreover, the report claims that the serial league winner is keen on the idea, meaning this deal could be completed relatively quickly.

Why Coman would be a great signing

One of the benefits of signing Coman this summer is that he's more than capable of playing off the right or left of a front three. This means that he could also offer some extra competition to Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, in turn offering Arteta yet another option in attack.

However, the primary reason the Gunners should look to bring the Champions League winner to the Emirates in the coming weeks is that he could be the perfect competition for Saka and, therefore, the first player to genuinely allow the Englishman a chance to rest during the season.

Now, it should be clarified that as talented as the former Juventus gem is, it's incredibly unlikely he'd join up with the squad and displace the Hale End superstar from the starting lineup.

We don't think there are many wingers in world football that Arteta would pick over the North Londoners' poster boy, but the Munich star is more than good enough to play substantial minutes over what is set to be an incredibly congested season.

For example, while he only made 27 appearances and played 1737 minutes of football last season, the 28-year-old still racked up five goals and three assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 3.37 games or once every 217.12 minutes.

Moreover, in the campaign prior, the Paris-born star, whom former Bayen Sporting Director Matthias Sammer once described as "one of the biggest talents in European football," found the back of the net on nine occasions in 35 appearances while also providing seven assists, equating to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.18 games.

Ultimately, there really is no downside to signing Coman on a season-long loan this summer, and if Arsenal can negotiate a deal that does not include an obligation to buy, then they should absolutely bring the Frenchman to the Emirates this summer. His quality would allow Saka to get some genuine rest during the season and maintain a higher level throughout the campaign.

Wolves have tabled £17m offer to sign 22 y/o as club struggle to reject it

Wolves are believed to have made a £17m offer for a 22-year-old, according to a new transfer update, with his current club struggling to turn it down.

Wolves transfer news

It has been an up-and-down summer transfer window at Molineux, with new faces already at the club, including Rodrigo Gomes and Pedro Lima. That being said, Wanderers have also lost key duo Max Kilman and Pedro Neto, who have joined West Ham and Chelsea respectively.

Replacements for the pair are essential before the end of the summer transfer window and RB Salzburg centre-back Oumar Solet has reportedly been lined up as a successor to Kilman at the heart of Gary O'Neil's defence.

A new goalkeeper could also be looked at by Wolves in the next few weeks and Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale has emerged as a potential option. The Englishman has been out of favour for the Gunners ever since David Raya arrived on loan from Brentford last summer, and he has now joined on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, Ajax forward Carlos Forbs has been lined up as a possible replacement for Neto out wide, having once been in Manchester City's youth team, spending eight years there between 2015 and 2023. The 20-year-old scored five goals and registered six assists in just seven appearances in the UEFA Youth League for the Under-19s during his time at the Etihad, showing what a prodigious talent he is.

Wolves made £17m offer for new goalkeeper

According to a new update from Il Messaggero [via Sport Witness], Wolves have bid around £17m for the services of Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas, as they look to snap him up this summer.

The report states that the Serie A side will find it hard to say "no" to the offer, following a breakout 2023/24 season from the 22-year-old Greek.

Mandas may not necessarily be a household name for Wolves supporters, but he could be a shrewd option between the sticks, as they look to bring in strong competition for Jose Sa, and perhaps even a long-term upgrade on the Portuguese.

The Lazio man is still a young 'keeper, but he has already shown that he is capable of shining in one of Europe's toughest leagues, starting eight games in Serie A last season, not to mention keeping six clean sheets in a total of 12 appearances for the Italian giants to date.

Mandas is a one-cap Greece international, and will surely add to that tally as his career goes on, and Wolves could enjoy the best years of him, initially bringing him as a great squad option before usurping Sa at Molineux, considering he is eight years the Wanderers hero's junior.

Romano: Rangers have "genuine interest" in "phenomenal" £15k-a-week gem

Rangers have "genuine interest" in signing a "phenomenal" player this summer, with a move potentially being completed in "days", according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Rangers transfer news

Plymouth Argyle striker Morgan Whittaker has been linked with a move to the Gers plenty of times recently, and it is a rumour that is refusing to go away. The 23-year-old was a standout attacking player in the Championship last season, registering 27 goal contributions (19 goals and eight assists) in 45 appearances.

Speaking on theTransfer Show, Simon Halloran has said: "We’re continuing to be linked with Morgan Whittaker. As far as we’re aware, this is legit, that we’re wanting him. We wouldn’t be pursuing if we didn’t believe a deal could be done."

Elsewhere, Rangers continue to be linked with a summer move for experienced Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan, although a transfer still appears to be some way from being completed. The 30-year-old could arrive on a loan-to-buy deal, with a permanent £3.3m switch then possibly on the cards this time next year.

Goncalo Borges is also being spoken of as a target for the Gers, with the Porto man an exciting young winger who would give Philippe Clement extra wide depth, following the summer exit of Kemar Roofe, among others. While the attacker remains an eye-catching young footballer who should still improve, it is worth noting that he hasn't yet scored in 50 appearances for his current club.

Rangers could sign "phenomenal" ace within "days"

According to Romano in an update for Caught Offside [via Rangers News], Rangers' interest in Hannibal Mejbri is "genuine", with the Manchester United youngster potentially leaving his current club in a matter of "days":

"Yeah I think there will be some more exits. For example Hannibal Mejbri will be out, I think, in the next days. They want to sell him on a permanent transfer and there is genuine interest from Rangers."

Hannibal could be just what Clement is looking for in the middle of the park, and if he could snap up both the United man and Jordan, it would give Rangers a lovely blend of fearless youth and vast experience in the middle of the park.

The Tunisian is an energetic midfielder who likes getting stuck in, and while that may be to his detriment at times – he received 10 yellow cards on loan at Birmingham City during a loan spell in 2022/23 – he has been lauded by former manager John Eustace: "The way he has played in the last couple of games has been phenomenal. He has broken records for total distance [covered], all that kind of stuff."

The £15,000-a-week Hannibal could be an instant favourite at Ibrox, and could relish the physical side of a battle with Celtic in the Old Firm derby, for example, but it is also worth stressing that he is a strong technical footballer, hence him being at United in the first place.

Ashley Giles: 'The door can't be closed forever' as Alex Hales given hope of comeback

Director of cricket holds talks with player’s agent, two years after banishment from England set-up

Ashley Giles has given the strongest hint yet that Alex Hales may be offered a route back into England’s white-ball set-up, almost two years after he was axed from the 2019 World Cup squad for failing two tests for recreational drugs. On Thursday Giles, England’s director of cricket, held what have been described as “positive” talks with James Cross, Hales’ agent, shortly after recording an interview for Sky Sports’ Cricket Show, in which he admitted that “the door can’t be closed forever” to a player who is regarded as one of the foremost batsmen on the T20 franchise circuit.”We all know what a good player Alex is,” Giles told Sky. “There has to be a way back in. In these times bringing someone back in – trying to reintegrate them – has been difficult to do because we’re living bubble life. But I certainly hope there are opportunities to do that this year.”Since his banishment from the England squad, Hales, 32, has carved himself a niche on the franchise circuit with a run of eye-catching performances – most recently at Australia’s Big Bash, where he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 543 runs for Sydney Thunder. And the longer his exile has gone on, the more the questions have begun to stack up for the England management – not least the captain Eoin Morgan, who accused Hales of a “complete disregard” for the team’s values in the wake of his sacking, and has repeatedly stated that that such a fundamental loss of trust can only be rebuilt over time.Last month, Hales pleaded to be given closure on the matter, one way or the other, describing himself as “desperate” to return to the England set-up after the “sickening” manner in which his career crumbled on the eve of the World Cup.He claimed to have made significant lifestyle changes since his fall from grace, including a move to a village outside Nottingham, and during the recent BBL, his coach at Sydney Thunder, Shane Bond, criticised the ECB for failing to enquire after a player who would walk into most T20I line-ups in the world.Related

Though Morgan has not yet spoken to Hales in his attempts to rebuild bridges between the pair, it is understood that he could be involved in a further round of talks with Hales’ management next month.Certainly, his stance appeared to have softened a touch when he was asked about Hales’ status on the eve of the first T20I in Ahmedabad.”A lot of players who aren’t in the squads have had really good winters,” Morgan said. “Alex is one of those, as is James Vince. The truth is it’s a very difficult side to get into at the moment.”Given the challenges around Covid, what we would normally do, if it wasn’t around, is try and have players that we perceive may be a part of the future coming in and spending time around the side, maybe two days out before the game,” he added.”Given that the regulations are being eased throughout our summer, that could be an opportunity for players outside of the squads to come in and be around the team, and Alex is in that place.”Giles added: “He is a high-class player. We are lucky at the moment we are blessed with a lot of high-class players in our T20 line-up particularly, but the door can’t be closed for ever. We all know that trust is a really important thing and that has to be won back.”

West Ham table £15m bid for "evolving" ace who’s already said yes to move

Looking to bolster Julen Lopetegui's squad further before the transfer window slams shut at the end of next month, West Ham United have reportedly tabled a £15m bid to sign an attacking reinforcement.

West Ham transfer rumours

It's the late show at the London Stadium this summer, with their Premier League opener against Aston Villa a matter of weeks away. There is, of course, some irony to the fact that the Hammers are set to square off against Aston Villa on the opening day, given that negotiations could reportedly be ongoing between the two clubs over a deal for Jhon Duran. The forward has certainly made his feelings known too, throwing up the famous Hammers sign on Instagram Live recently.

Jhon Duran scores for Aston Villa

If West Ham can reach an agreement to sign Duran before that game on August 17, then he may have the chance to deal the Midlands club one last blow in front of the fans at Villa Park. Given his recent antics, it is an opportunity that the forward may love to take with both hands.

Duran may not be the only Premier League player arriving after Max Kilman however. According to The Sunday Mirror via West Ham Zone, West Ham have tabled a £15m bid to sign Reiss Nelson from Arsenal this summer. The winger has reportedly already said yes and agreed to the move earlier this month, but it remains to be seen whether the Hammers' first offer is enough for their London rivals to sanction a move.

Previous reports suggested that Arsenal's price tag sits at £25m, which would make West Ham's reported bid some way off the mark. With Leicester City also reportedly interested in Nelson, those in London may be left with no choice but to match the Gunners' valuation this summer. As the season approaches, Lopetegui may hope to see any deals wrapped up as soon as possible, be that for Duran or, indeed, Nelson.

"Evolving" Nelson needs move

After a late flurry of form in the 2022/23 campaign led to a new contract, Nelson would have been desperate to pick up where he left off and finally make his mark on Mikel Arteta's side last season. But that was far from the case. The 24-year-old earned just one Premier League start and found himself out of the squad altogether in the final five games in quite the contrast to the previous campaign. Now, as the reality of his game time sets in, he appears to need a fresh start.

That's where West Ham could come in. The Hammers could do with all the depth that they can get and providing cover for Mohammed Kudus could be the key to sustained success in the fast-approaching season. Nelson is hardly an inexperienced option to turn to either, having spent time at Feyenoord and Hoffenheim before breaking through at Arsenal.

His exit, should it take place, will be a shame given his status as an academy graduate and a player Arteta once believed was "evolving", but West Ham may well take full advantage to finally help Nelson realise his potential.

Liverpool could sign £50m Quansah upgrade who’ll be one of the world’s best

Joe Gomez is Liverpool's longest-serving senior player. The England international signed from Charlton Athletic for around £3.5m in 2015 when he was a teenager and has been a cardinal presence under Jurgen Klopp.

He's won it all. Still only 27, Gomez has mounted 224 appearances for the Anfielders, playing across the backline and being described as "absolutely priceless" by pundit Steve McManaman.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

The thing is though, there's no such thing as priceless in football, with Gomez mooted for a departure at the start of the Arne Slot era. After nearly a decade of service, he's earned the right to search for pastures new, but Liverpool would need to sign a replacement.

Liverpool transfer news

Gomez was not included in Liverpool's matchday squad for the opening day of the Premier League campaign, where three points were struck through a 2-0 victory at Ipswich Town, goals by Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

Klopp used him across both defensive flanks last term but it's not out of the question that, should he stay, Slot would view him as an athletic central defender, having played 114 fixtures at centre-back throughout his career.

Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle United have all been credited with an interest and it might be that he moves on; he'd likely play a bit-part role this year. As such, Liverpool should move quickly to ensure that they are in a position to sign the perfect replacement.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Enter Piero Hincapie. According to Studio Futbol earlier this week, Liverpool are set to tussle with Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of the Bayer Leverkusen centre-half, though Xabi Alonso does not want to part with his defensive invincible.

Hincapie is left-footed and thus would appear to be a natural successor to skipper Virgil van Dijk, who has long dominated from the left side of defence for the Reds.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

Liverpool are the only side across Europe's top-seven leagues that have yet to make a senior signing this summer, so the funds are there for the £50m-rated star – it will take willpower and savvy negotiating to get this one done though.

Jarell Quansah's place in Slot's squad

Slot certainly doesn't mince his words. The former Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar boss made the bold call to take Quansah off at half-time at Portman Road, discontented by Liverpool's aggressiveness and sharpness throughout a stodgy opening half.

When quizzed on his substitution post-match, he responded tersely that his decision had indeed been tactical. Quansah, 21, received a big show of faith to get the nod over Ibrahima Konate for the opening fixture and looked angry and aggrieved as he slumped in his seat after half-time, watching his teammates run rampant.

Van Dijk is an unquestionable starter in the Liverpool rearguard but his partner is seemingly undetermined at this stage, and FSG could yet move to add another dimension through the signing of a player like Hincapie.

Such a signing would have to be studiously thought out, for Quansah and Konate both have flaws (the former inexperience and the latter a rash streak and a tendency to dip now and again).

But, as the table above shows you, both are top-class defenders, highly skilled and suitable for the kind of passing game that Slot seeks to implement.

It sure would have to be an exciting player to join the fold and flourish.

Why Liverpool must sign Piero Hincapie

Hincapie, 22, has already been tipped to become “one of the world's best centre-backs” by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango, who has also dubbed him an "absolute beast".

Having won the domestic double last season as an invincible, the Ecuador international has started the 2024/25 campaign with a bang, playing a crucial role in Leverkusen's third slice of silverware in 2024, beating Stuttgart in the DFL-Supercup last weekend.

The sky is the limit, and Liverpool must throw the kitchen sink at the 22-year-old this summer, especially if Gomez is to be sold.

Quansah is a high-level defender with the trappings of something even greater, sure, but Hincapie could pip his English positional peer and cement a regular starting berth for Liverpool over the coming years.

With a hulking frame and a sharp range of passing, Quansah's got what it takes to succeed on Merseyside, but his strengths in that regard are actually surpassed by Hincapie, who has the mark of an elite ball player.

The Ecuadorian ace's ability to play down the channels and create with constancy is something to behold, and he will only improve – like Quansah – with age.

Ultimately, comparing the two centre-backs has a semblance of splitting hairs, and there's no reason why they cannot form a formidable defensive bond under Slot's tutelage for many years to come.

Man City player ratings vs Feyenoord: Another defensive disaster-class, as Ederson and Josko Gvardiol horror-shows spark Champions League collapse as Erling Haaland's heroics go unrewarded

Pep Guardiola's side threw away a three-goal lead to fall deeper into crisis as their run without a win stretched to six games

Manchester City thought they were out of their crisis when they went 3-0 up against Feyenoord on Tuesday, but their own dismal defending pulled them right back in as they were left wondering how on earth they managed to draw 3-3 in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola's side were cruising thanks to a double from Erling Haaland and an Ilkay Gundogan strike, but they capitulated in a dreadful final 15 minutes.

A horrendous Josko Gvardiol back-pass allowed Anis Hadj Moussa to pull Feyenoord back into contention before Santiago Gimenez and David Hancko scored to round off the most unlikely of comebacks from the visitors, who are fourth in the Eredivisie, eight points off the pace.

Ederson (4/10):

Stood tall to trap Paixao's effort but appeared to take his eye off the ball late in the game. A tad slow when he tried to halt Hadj-Moussa and didn't guard his post properly in the build-up to the second before being at fault for the equaliser.

Rico Lewis (5/10):

Was having a more comfortable evening than in recent weeks, shuttling between defence and midfield with ease, but he was overwhelmed at the end.

Manuel Akanji (5/10):

Nathan Ake (6/10):

Josko Gvardiol (4/10):

Made a couple of good recovery runs but one weak ball to Foden that was intercepted was a sign he was lacking concentration, and he made his worst blunder of a bad week to gift Feyenoord a way back in to the game.

Uninspiring once more. Blocked Grealish's shot and saw his own strike tipped around the post.

Erling Haaland (8/10):

Jack Grealish (5/10):

Not an encouraging return at all. Wasted a great chance to make it 4-0 and then had a shot deflected onto the bar at the end.

Rodri's Ballon d'Or triumph over Vinicius Jr. in Paris this year has divided opinions in world football. While some considered the Manchester City star to be a worthy recipient of the Golden Ball, several experts and footballers believed that the Brazilian was robbed of the prize.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amid all the debate over the Ballon d'Or, Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez has slammed journalists from four countries who completely ignored the Brazilian during the voting process. Vinicius Jr had a dream outing in club football in the 2023/24 season as he played a crucial role in Los Blancos winning the Champions League and La Liga titles. Rodri, on the other hand, won the Premier League trophy for a record fourth season in a row and then helped Spain win their second European Championship title.

  • WHAT FLORENTINO PEREZ SAID

At an event, the Real president said, "If the journalists from Namibia, Uganda, Albania and Finland had not voted, Vinicius would be the Ballon d'Or [winner]. These countries did not give Vinicius a single vote. Not one! The Finn, at least, has resigned. And he has said that he will not be part of the jury again. Look, I appreciate it.

"The Ballon d'Or must be organised independently and the votes for this award must be in the hands of people of recognised prestige, the coaches, so that everyone understands that their reputation is also at stake with their vote. We do not know who voted for them, from countries we do not know. For all these reasons, Real Madrid considered it appropriate not to attend this edition of the Ballon d'Or gala."
