0 duels won: Slot must instantly drop 4/10 Liverpool star after Chelsea

The Premier League watched with bated breath. Surely, this was to be the game that would unravel the Arne Slot revolution at Liverpool, who would collapse against the first test of significance?

Chelsea were impressive and their fans should be excited by the promise that has hatched from Enzo Maresca’s tactical implementation, but Slot has trumped the Italian at this stage, shaping Anfield into a force to be reckoned with.

Curtis Jones gave birth to a new level of quality and control as he scored and won both of Liverpool’s awarded penalties, albeit the latter being overturned by VAR.

The 23-year-old’s performance showcases Liverpool’s strength of depth and comments on Slot’s chances of winning silverware this season.

It wasn’t a perfect performance: Chelsea had plenty of success in midfield and succeeded in taking a foothold across portions of the Anfield clash. Dominik Szoboszlai produced an indifferent performance once more and must be sweating over his starting berth going forward.

Dominik Szoboszlai's performance vs Chelsea

Alexis Mac Allister lost his place in the starting line-up for this one, with Slot wary of overexerting his South American coterie, who had only days before returned from their home continent after the October international break.

It meant Jones was handed the opportunity to impress, and he took his chance superbly. Szoboszlai, however, has done little to shake off his detractors after leaving plenty to be desired with the technical facets displayed against the Blues.

Aside from squandering a promising chance in the first half, the 2023 recruit from RB Leipzig also failed to move away from anonymity, with his metrics from the afternoon depicting a bland, colourless canvas.

Not great. It’s pretty damning that Liverpool’s thrusting midfielder failed to win any of his seven contested duels or even win a tackle, while also unable to attempt, let alone complete, a dribble, despite all his running. And moreover, his 49 touches yielded not one key pass.

His movement and presence did help to wrest control from Chelsea in moments, but it wasn’t enough to colour his performance in a positive light.

Luckily, Jones’ wonderful effort allowed Liverpool to grab the three points. Maybe on another day, Liverpool wouldn’t have seen the affair sway in the way it did, and Slot might be tempted to bench Szoboszlai for the next one.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai must be dropped

Szoboszlai’s high-class ability is indisputable, but it’s safe to say that he’s not applying himself correctly in crucial moments, appearing hesitant, and circumspect. Fans can likely draw several instances from 2024/25 alone when the Hungary captain should have thumped the ball against the netting.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With Jones thriving, perhaps it’s time to relegate Szoboszlai to the bench for a couple of matches, probing him to harness that abundant talent and bring it together to give Liverpool the goals that they need from deep. Mohamed Salah and his forwards are excellent, but there will be a time when another dimension is needed to secure the points.

Against Chelsea, the 23-year-old certainly caught onlookers’ attention, with inews writing of Szoboszlai’s shortcomings in their post-match ratings: ‘Didn’t do well enough with a great chance on 37 minutes and was otherwise anonymous.’

Szoboszlai is a tireless runner but sometimes to a fault. His endless gas tank provides Slot’s engine with the energy it needs to outwork opponents, create space, maintain fluidity within passing passages.

It meant that he was handed a 4/10 match rating, and with Alexis Mac Allister starting from the bench after jetting halfway across the world, you worry about his starting place going forward.

Dominik Szoboszlai warms up for Liverpool

Not least because Jones was so brilliant, so confident, so dynamic. Against Arsenal at the Emirates next weekend, perhaps Slot will value Szoboszlai’s energy and athleticism. But Jones’ movement and silencing of Cole Palmer suggest his form must be preserved. The former Leipzig man needs to be dropped.

Move over Wallace: Corberan must now unleash “talented” West Brom star

West Bromwich Albion go into this set of Championship mid-week fixtures desperate for a win, with the Baggies experiencing a sticky patch of form of late in the second tier.

Carlos Corberan’s men went the entirety of October without picking up an elusive three points, but the very start of November did see West Brom race into a 1-0 lead away from home at Luton Town, only for Tahith Chong to fire home an equaliser to secure a share of the points for the Hatters.

Therefore, the Spaniard in the Hawthorns hot seat must be contemplating some changes for his side’s clash with Burnley tonight, which could include dropping Jed Wallace for some new blood to shine against Scott Parker’s equally up-and-down Clarets.

Wallace's form this season

Wallace has learnt the hard way that he’s no longer a guaranteed name on his manager’s teamsheet, with only two starts coming his way this campaign in the Championship to date, after starting 35 clashes in total last season.

His poor displays when he has started haven’t helped his cause either, with the experienced 30-year-old way off the pace against Luton last time out.

The former Millwall midfielder would only amass a lacklustre 22 touches of the ball at Kenilworth Road, with the bite and energy that’s usually apparent in the versatile West Brom number seven’s game also missing, with just one paltry duel won from nine attempted.

Also failing to complete a single dribble, alongside failing to test Thomas Kaminski with a single effort on goal, it wasn’t a huge surprise when Corberan hooked off Wallace just after the hour mark to put him out of his misery.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old’s best days in a Baggies strip could now be behind him, with free-kick strikes like this one managed against Rotherham United just last season a distant memory, compared to his dire performances in the here and now.

Corberan could well be forced into playing a different attacking midfielder behind Josh Maja for the test of Burnley tonight, therefore, with John Swift an adequate replacement for the underperforming Wallace.

Why Swift should replace Wallace

Funnily enough, Swift was purchased in the exact same transfer window Wallace also entered the building, with the ex-Reading man still showing glimpses of his quality in a Baggies kit now three seasons deep into his stay at the Hawthorns.

Although he also has zero goals and assists next to his name like his former Millwall counterpart in league action, Swift was desperately unlucky versus Cardiff City the match before the away trip to Luton to not pick up a goal contribution.

Coming away from the game with four key passes under his belt, after amassing a ridiculous 116 touches as a key creative spark for his side, it’s safe to say the 29-year-old was desperately unlucky not to come away from the 0-0 affair with anything of note.

Instead, he was surprisingly dropped for Wallace, which is a decision his manager must now regret, having seen what the out-of-sorts midfielder offered in place of the “talented” ace, with that label given to him when he still was at Reading by ex-Royals manager Veljko Paunovic.

Also capable of scoring sublime strikes like this one for his side, having tallied up 16 goals from his 102 appearances to date in the West Midlands, Swift’s re-entry into the starting XI could see West Brom play more on the front foot against Burnley.

With the Clarets also wobbling in terms of form, with no wins in their last three, Corberan could sense this is a good opportunity for his team to get back on the horse, as Swift potentially returns to his XI.

Gabba power failure causes TV broadcast blackout

The Test continued but very few were able to follow it for part of the morning session

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2021A major power outage at the Gabba resulted in television coverage of the fourth day’s play going off air during the morning session as the opening Ashes Test continued be hampered by technical issues. The world feed – which is taken by all broadcasters with coverage of the match – went down midway through the session leaving the majority of viewers in the dark. Channel Seven, who share coverage with Fox Sports in Australia, were able to provide some pictures with their own cameras at the venue but that, too, was interrupted for a period.Occasionally there was a view provided from just one end of the ground as broadcasters scrambled to get pictures back on air. The DRS was also unavailable during this time. After a 25-minute period of disruption, power was restored shortly after the drinks break and full coverage resumed across networks.Related

The absence of the no-ball system only became apparent on the second day when Ben Stokes dismissed David Warner but had overstepped, with replays then showing his first three deliveries had all been no-balls.Broadcasters have been working with severely scaled-back production staff at the Gabba due to the restrictions put in place by the Queensland government. The full DRS is expected to be available in Adelaide.

Liverpool want to ruin Amorim’s Man Utd plan by signing "talented" £84m gem

As the Arne Slot machine keeps hitting the jackpot, Liverpool are now reportedly plotting to get an early victory over new Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim by signing one Sporting CP gem ahead of interest from their rivals.

Liverpool transfer news

If there was a definition for seamless transition then 14 wins in 16 games would be among them. Slot has entered Anfield and simply picked up where Jurgen Klopp left off whilst implementing his own calmer, more controlled approach than the exciting, positively frantic style of the German. And things were no different against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, as Luis Diaz’s hat-trick sent Xabi Alonso packing.

Back on top in the Premier League and in European football, Michael Edwards will now want to get Liverpool back to the top in the transfer market following a quiet window last time out.

The Reds have already been linked with the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, but now reportedly want to spoil one of Amorim’s first plans at Manchester United.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool now want to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting Club, who will only let their 17-year-old winger leave if his hefty €100m (£84m) release clause is triggered.

Those at Anfield sit alongside Manchester City and Manchester United with their interest and the latter may well have the advantage on paper given Amorim’s Sporting links. That said, it would then be quite the way to deal an early blow to the new Red Devils boss by instantly luring one of his former players away from his grasp.

90% passing, 100% dribbles: 8/10 Liverpool star was just as good as Diaz

Quenda – still a teenager – is considered one of Sporting’s hottest prospects and is undoubtedly one to keep an eye on.

"Talented" Quenda is one for the future

Whilst it remains uncertain whether Mohamed Salah will put pen to paper on a new Liverpool deal, what is a known fact is that the Egyptian doesn’t have several years left at the top now that he’s 32 years old. In an ideal world, the Liverpool great will sign a new contract just as the Reds welcome the heir to his throne in the form of Quenda – a player who would instantly learn from Salah.

The young right-winger has been at the centre of significant praise so far this season, including from Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, who described him as “one of the most talented wingers in world football” this week.

Replacing Salah will be no easy task, whenever that may be, but getting one over on Manchester United and Amorim whilst doing exactly that would be quite the move from those at Anfield.

As you can see, there’s plenty of opposition hoping to trip the Merseysiders up over the coming months, but Liverpool have what it takes to succeed, especially with Virgil van Dijk back to his stunning best.

Virgil van Dijk's brilliance

Van Dijk is widely regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs of his generation, with Paolo Maldini even claiming that the Netherlands captain “will be the best defender in history of football soon”, quite the remark from one of the game’s finest.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

His £75m move to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 had a transcendental effect on Klopp’s team, for he added a new-found level of security and stability at the rear and was instrumental in winning the Premier League, Champions League and a wealth of further major honours.

Liverpool’s defensive quality perhaps waned over the later years of Klopp’s reign but Slot’s newly-implemented system has worked wonders, with the 33-year-old back to his best, head and shoulders above the rest of the defensive talent in England’s top flight.

Statistics will only tell you so much, though the 6 foot 4 colossus’ metrics from the previous term hold up against his current, having completed 92% of his passes and won 68% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

He’s irreplaceable, but Liverpool need to prepare for his departure in any case. It’s well-known that Van Dijk’s £220k-per-week contract is soon to expire, and while it would be hoped that he remains on Merseyside, a long-term plan needs to be put forth.

Liverpool looking at Van Dijk heir

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are doing due diligence on Palmeiras centre-back Vitor Reis as they weigh up launching a bid in 2025.

The Brazilian defender has earned acclaim for his early performances in his homeland and has what it takes to become a leading player in a division such as the Premier League, with a number of top European outfits, such as Arsenal and Real Madrid, also tracking him.

The 18-year-old has a staggering €100m (£84m) release clause in his contract but FSG will hope to agree to a deal far below that exorbitant tag, should Liverpool’s interest indeed solidify.

What type of defender Vitor Reis is

Standing at 6 foot 1, Reis isn’t the most towering of titans but he is composed and assured in his performances in defence, belying his age to step confidently into life as a professional.

Palmeiras are second in the Brasileiro Serie A this season and boast the meanest defence in the country, with just 20 goals conceded across 29 matches.

Reis’ maiden year as a senior has been hampered by injuries but he’s still exhibited his talent through some excellent performances. While he’s only chalked up 15 professional appearances, Reis has scored two goals and showcased his quality excellently.

Brazilian football expert Marcus Watts has issued a glowing endorsement on his ability, saying: “Despite not being a very physical player, he’s very good in the air and has shown great awareness for an 18yo.

Vitor Reis for Palmeiras

“He’s also very good on the ball, both for setting up the play from the back and for attacking – which has already been translated into two goals so early in his career.

“Another good mental attribute he’s already shown is his decision making – he knows where the spaces are and knows when to move forward or when to make a tackle, something that is quite remarkable for a player so young.”

His mental capacity and innate quality in reading the game is something that could see him emulate Van Dijk, with journalist Alan Gouveia picking Reis out as the best from a bad bunch during one defeat back in July, criticising the “shameful” performance but praising the teenager, who “doesn’t feel the weight of the shirt”.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk

As per FBref, the young star ranks among the top 15% of centre-backs across divisions similar to the Brazilian first division for goals scored, the top 12% for pass completion, the top 13% for tackles and the top 8% for aerial battles won per 90, highlighting the wide spread of skills that further suggest that he has what it takes to succeed Van Dijk.

It was mentioned earlier that Reis isn’t exactly the most physically imposing of players, but even so, he has won 70% of his aerial battles in the league this season while completing 92% of his passes and averaging 3.4 ball recoveries and 3.4 clearances per game.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

There’s so much to like about this young defender, and while he might not be ready to start for Liverpool week in and week out, efforts must be made to sign him and nurture his ability over the coming years.

It would be amazing if Van Dijk penned a new deal and continued his Liverpool journey over the next several campaigns, but irrespective of the outcome, a success plan is needed, and Reis could be the perfect heir.
