From the inclusion of Reyna to Pochettino's admiration of Tyler Adams, GOAL takes a look at the big takeaways from the latest U.S. squad
U.S. national team manager Mauricio Pochettino made it clear several times during a media call Tuesday to discuss his call-ups: trimming down the player pool to select the CONCACAF Nations League roster wasn’t fun. After naming a 60-player preliminary list, he had to cut it down to 23. It’s not the best part of his job – nor the easiest.
“When you can only call 23 when the preliminary list was 60 players, it’s really painful,” he said. “It’s not only about performance; it’s about balance and how you connect the characteristics of the players in the squad.”
There were some notable exclusions from Pochettino’s 23-man squad. Brenden Aaronson was left off, signaling that he has work to do if he wants to stay in the squad over the next year. Alejandro Zendejas was omitted as well, despite his incredible run of form with Club America. They were two of several difficult decisions, Pochettino said. If it were up to him, he’d have a much bigger squad. But that’s not how this works.
Pochettino did get the opportunity to add some newcomers, at least for him. Tyler Adams is back. So, too, is Gio Reyna. Both could be starters by the time the World Cup comes around, and both will now get the chance to work under the Argentine for the first time next week. That’s the fun part of the job – one that begins now that Pochettino has trimmed his list.
GOAL looks at main takeaways from Pochettino as he discussed his squad, the balance he’s aiming for, upcoming competitions, and the road to the CONCACAF Nations League final.

On Aaronson's absence: 'Too many players in that position'
"Sometimes it's not about a player having to improve," Pochettino said. "It's just about numbers".
For Brenden Aaronson, in particular, his absence came down to just that: Numbers. It isn't necessarily fair and, for Aaronson, it won't feel that way, but Pochettino can only call on 23 guys and, for this camp in particular, those 23 didn't include Aaronson.
Pochettino broke it down in the simplest terms. He sees the Leeds United star as a No. 10 and, right now, he's loaded with options in that position. Dortmund's Gio Reyna is back and could start there. So, too, could Real Salt Lake star Diego Luna, who shined in January camp. Weston McKennie has played extremely well as Juventus' No. 10 at times this season – and Pochettino even name-checked Christian Pulisic as someone who can play there, as well.
Again, it's a numbers game, and Aaronson's wasn't called.
"I think we have too many players for only one position and this was a possibility to provide balance," Pochettino said. "When you have 23 players to call in a competition for two games in a short space of time, balance is important. It's only really 20 players because you have three keepers, of course. We talk about [Brenden], but we can talk about many other players and we are disappointed we cannot call all of them. In our mind, Brenden is still a player that we consider so highly, but he'll have to wait until the next one."

Reyna's return: 'I think he can help'
Reyna is back in the group for the first time under Pochettino. His return comes at a tough moment as he continues to struggle at Borussia Dortmund. That makes this opportunity feel even bigger.
Just a year ago, Reyna was recognized as the Nations League's Best Player. That's the level he can reach, and Pochettino knows it, even if he has yet to really work with the 22-year-old midfielder. Opportunities such as this will be limited going forward if Reyna stays at Dortmund, whose participation at the Club World Cup would rule Reyna out of the USMNT's Gold Cup squad.
"I think his talent is there, and it's good to feel and see how he can help," Pochettino said. "I think one of the reasons to call him is because was a great opportunity. If not, it's going to be difficult to see him."
Reyna's place, though, isn't guaranteed. As Pochettino alluded to, the No. 10 competition is heating up, reaching a point now at which a regular such Aaronson can be left out of the squad. That'll serve as a reminder to the likes of Reyna, who needs to be playing at a high level by the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around.
"Everyone recognizes that he's talented and, of course, he's improving and he needs to improve," the manager said. "Of course, he can do better. We need to push him, but, secondly, we need to understand how he thinks, what he likes, what he doesn't like. I think it's important to create this relationship for the future. We want to win this competition, and I think he can help."

Adams is back: 'I wanted him at Chelsea!'
Pochettino knows all about Tyler Adams. If not for a late breakdown on a transfer from Leeds, he would have had him in his squad at Chelsea. It didn't work out that way. Chelsea splashed the cash on Moises Caicedo, Adams went to Bournemouth, and Pochettino, ultimately, left Stamford Bridge after last season.
"We know him very well as a player," Pochettino said of Adams. "He's a player we wanted to sign at Chelsea because he's a very good player."
That admiration remains, though, as Pochettino will finally get the chance to work with Adams in a USMNT shirt. The Bournemouth star hasn't been with the team since the Copa America and has largely been out of the team since the 2022 World Cup due to injuries. He's back to his best now, though, which gives Pochettino a new defensive bully in midfield.
"He needs to prove that he's better than the others," Pochettino said. "We have a good competition in midfield with [Tanner] Tessmann, [Johnny] Cardoso, [Yunus] Musah and McKennie, who all play that position. This is a good opportunity for us to see [Adams] and it's great to have him here again. This last month, he was performing really well with his team and I think he deserves an opportunity. For us, it's a great opportunity to get to know him."

Striker pool takes shape: 'Going to compete this week'
The forward line has been decimated by injuries. Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are both out, leaving the USMNT without two of its top strikers. In this camp, the line will be led by Josh Sargent, Patrick Agyemang and Brian White – all of whom have a point to prove.
Sargent is the obvious frontrunner. He's in incredible form for Norwich, having scored eight goals in his last eight matches. He's playing better than he ever has before, which almost certainly gives him a leg up on the other two. Even so, Pochettino isn't quite ready to announce him as the starter, insisting that Sargent still has to prove himself leading up to the March 20 semifinal against Panama.
"We need to pay attention to him," Pochettino said. "We are talking about a player that is doing really well in the Championship. Of course, Brenden Aaronson is also in the Championship and it's not the Premier League. It's not Calcio [Serie A], not La Liga, not a first division, but we need to know our players, know that they're performing well and, of course, if they do, they deserve the opportunity."
As for Agyemang and White, both are here following goalscoring performances at the January camp. Neither has ever been in a USMNT camp outside of that annual January gathering, which makes this a meaningful opportunity. Beating out Sargent for starts will be difficult, but both will hope to play some part of called upon by Pochettino.
"I think it's good competition," the USMNT coach said, "and it also then provides the national team a good three strikers competing to play in a very important tournament like the one we are going to compete in next week."
Celtic return to domestic action this weekend as they prepare to take on Kilmarnock away from Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon.
The Hoops come into this matchup off the back of a 3-1 win over Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in their fourth game of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Two goals from Nicolas Kuhn and one from Reo Hatate secured all three points for the Scottish giants, which was their second win in the league phase of the competition.
This comes after the Bhoys finished bottom of their group in the previous format in the 2023/24 campaign, winning just one of their six matches.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have also been in fine form domestically. They have won nine of their ten matches in the Premiership so far this term, drawing the other game, and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the division.
Despite their terrific start to the 2024/25 season, both domestically and on the European stage, there have been some players who have not been performing at the very best of their abilities.
Kyogo Furuhashi's struggles this season
One of those players is Kyogo Furuhashi. The Celtic marksman has not been at his best in the final third this season, having also struggled at times last term.
He had enjoyed a phenomenal 2022/23 campaign, scoring 27 goals in 36 matches in the Premiership, under Ange Postecoglou, but has yet to recapture that form during his time with Rodgers.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo’s finishing suffered a steep decline, missing eight more ‘big chances’ and scoring 13 fewer goals between those two seasons.
In the current campaign, the 29-year-old forward’s actions in front of goal have left plenty to be desired again, with a return of four goals in ten Premiership games.
His tally could have been significantly higher, however, if he had not fluffed as many opportunities at the top end of the pitch. The Japan international has already missed 12 ‘big chances’ in ten league games, starting eight of them.
Kyogo Furuhashi
Kyogo has also scored one goal and missed two ‘big chances’ in four appearances in the Champions League, which takes him to a tally of five goals and 14 ‘big chances’ spurned in 14 games across both competitions.
The forward has only scored two goals in his last eight appearances in all competitions and Rodgers could get him firing again by improving the creativity around him, to ensure that enough chances are created for him to find the back of the net and get back on the goal trial to improve his confidence.
Daizen Maeda's form this season
Daizen Maeda has been the first choice on the left flank for much of the season so far and is not the kind of winger who is likely to make a huge impact in the final third.
The Japanese forward’s best work is done off the ball, with his pressing to constantly close the opposition down and runs in behind to stretch defences, rather than in possession at the top end of the pitch.
In nine appearances in the Premiership so far this season, Maeda has provided two goals and two assists, and has only created two ‘big chances’ for his teammates. He has also failed to create a single ‘big chance’ in four appearances in the Champions League.
His lack of creativity across both competitions in the 2024/25 campaign should not come as a surprise, however, as it was also a weak point in his game last term.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old flanker rarely provided a creative spark for Celtic down the left flank in the Premiership last season.
Maeda only averaged one key pass every other game and managed just three assists in his 28 outings in the league, which suggests that he did not do much to help Kyogo to find the back of the net.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Therefore, Rodgers should look elsewhere to get the centre-forward firing and unleash the rarely-seen Luis Palma from the start this afternoon.
Why Luis Palma could get Kyogo firing
The Honduras international has only started one game in the Premiership so far this season but he does have the potential to come in and provide more creativity down the left wing.
He does not have the pace and the pressing qualities that Maeda possesses, but his use of the ball and his end product in the final third is superior to that of the Japan international.
Celtic forward Luis Palma.
The 24-year-old star showcased his creative quality in his only start of the Premiership season so far against Dundee last month, creating four chances and one ‘big chance’ for his teammates.
Palma was given plenty of chances to impress in the 2023/24 campaign, after his move from Greek side Aris in the summer of 2023, and caught the eye with his contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, the right-footed wizard created a whopping 14 ‘big chances’ and provided nine assists, whilst Maeda only created five ‘big chances’ and assisted three goals in the same number of appearances.
Palma, who ex-Celtic ace Peter Grant claimed “causes havoc” by being a “threat” on the pitch, can consistently open up opposition defences to create high-quality opportunities for his teammates, which is something the Japanese forward has failed to do.
Therefore, Rodgers could get Kyogo firing by unleashing a player who can provide him with more chances to consistently find the back of the net, as the current volume of key passes into him in the box has not been sufficient.
The "outstanding" Celtic star who has emerged as the new Lubo Moravcik
The former Celtic star may see himself in the current Hoops central midfielder.
It has been an incredibly tough season for Wolverhampton Wanderers so far. They are 17th in the Premier League and have just nine points to their name. This has, unsurprisingly, put pressure on manager Gary O’Neil, although that has somewhat lifted after the last couple of games.
Wins for the Old Gold have been like London buses in 2024/25. They went ten games without a victory, and have since won their next two on the bounce. Southampton were the first team they beat, overcoming them 2-0, before a fantastic 4-1 thrashing over Fulham at Craven Cottage sealed three points once more.
The star of the show in both of those games and, indeed, all season, has been Matheus Cunha.
Cunha’s stats in 2024/25
It has been an extraordinary campaign so far for Cunha, despite Wolves’ dire performances for the majority of the season. The Brazilian has scored seven goals and has three assists to his name in 12 appearances to date.
Cunha
The last four games have seen the Old Gold attacker go on a simply incredible run of form. He has scored four goals and registered three assists. That includes two goals and an assist away to the Cottagers last time out.
Cunha’s numbers are on a whole new level this season. He had 12 goals and seven assists to his name in 32 top-flight games in 2023/24 but is already just nine goal involvements away from that tally after 12 appearances.
As per FBref, he is one of just 18 players in the entirety of Europe’s big five leagues to have double figures for domestic goal involvements and one of six in the Premier League.
One of the most impressive things about the Brazilian attacker is his versatility. This season, O’Neil has played him in five different positions across the front line, and he has registered a goal or assist in three of them. He is an incredibly adaptable player.
Whilst Cunha is arguably the Old Gold’s best player, he might not end up being their next big sale. The Midlands club will no doubt do everything they can to keep hold of him and instead might sell another Brazilian in the squad first.
Wolves’ next major sale
The player in question here is Joao Gomes. Although the 23-year-old versatile midfielder does not have the same impact as Cunha from a goal involvements perspective, he is a key player for O’Neil.
This term, the young warrior has started all 12 times in the Premier League for the Midlands club and has managed to get on the scoresheet twice, grabbing an assist too, including one of each against Fulham.
If there is one thing that can be said about the Brazil international, it is that he is a fantastic ball-winner, having been described as “tenacious” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig. According to Squawka, Gomes has won 5.6 ground duels and makes an average of 5.6 ball recoveries per game this term.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes vs Arsenal
Interestingly, those numbers, like several of his other defensive stats, stack up well against Rodri’s 2023/24 stats.
The Ballon d’Or winner is undoubtedly one of the finest midfielders on the planet, and last season won 4.5 ground duels and made 7.2 ball recoveries per game. They really are similar statistically, showing Gomes’ quality.

There were reports over summer that the £30k per week star was a target for Manchester United. The Manchester Evening News reported in early August that the Red Devils were interested in the Wolves number eight, and said he had a value of £38m.
That is a sale that could certainly be considered the Old Gold’s next big departure. Not only would they be losing a key player, but they would be doubling their money, after signing him for £15m in January 2023.
Wolves will surely want to do everything in their power to keep hold of Gomes, but with the likes of United showing previous interest, they might not be able to keep hold of him for much longer.
Wolves must finally axe flop who earns more than Cunha & Ait-Nouri combined

Everton have several players representing their countries during the international break. Not only is the UEFA Nations League reaching its climax, but qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations is ongoing and the South American World Cup qualifiers are over halfway completed..
Sean Dyche will be hoping a few of his players can return to Merseyside free from any injuries as they look to move away from the Premier League relegation zone.
He will be buoyed by a few of the performances that have been delivered by his players, however.
The Everton players who have shone on international duty
Jordan Pickford kept another clean sheet for England during their 3-0 victory over Greece. The goalkeeper made five saves and won 100% of his total duels during the game.
Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye both started for Senegal in their AFCON qualifier against Burkina Faso, which ended in a narrow 1-0 win for Senegal.
Gueye was in superb form, finishing the game with a 96% pass success rate, making four key passes, winning six of his eight ground duels and making four tackles as he ran the show from the heart of the midfield.
Ndiaye was deployed in a more advanced role, just behind Nicolas Jackson, and he was fairly solid too. He made two key passes, registered two shots and attempted four dribbles, succeeding with two.
Dyche will be hoping the trio can maintain these levels of performance for Everton’s next match in the league. There was one player who gave an underwhelming display on international duty, however, as Beto failed to shine for his nation.
Beto's stats vs Guinea-Bissau
The striker has scored two goals for Everton this term, including one in the Premier League, but he was poor for Guinea-Bissau as they drew 1-1 with Eswantini in the AFCON qualifiers on Friday night.
He was tasked with leading the line, yet Beto managed to take just 20 touches during his time on the pitch, while losing the ball nine times and losing ten of his 11 contested duels as he struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Beto also committed five fouls during the match and completed only five passes. Yes, he may have had a hand in the equalising goal – with his cross eventually finding its way in courtesy of Carlos Mane – but overall, it was a dismal showing from the Everton player.
Given Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s dropoff in form in recent weeks, Dyche would have been hoping for a more promising showing by Beto.
On the evidence on yesterday’s showing, however, It looks like he could find himself on the bench again when Everton take on Brentford following the conclusion of the international break next week.
His sole Premier League goal has come from the bench, which suggests he is perhaps better off being utilised midway through a game.
This was his chance to impress Dyche, however, but the 26-year-old failed to showcase his true talents, that’s for sure.
Everton sold a star who's now outperforming Salah & Palmer in one key area
Everton sold a star under Dyche’s management and now he’s outperforming Salah and Palmer in one key area.
Real Madrid are now sniffing around Chelsea once more and reportedly want to take another of their stars to the Spanish capital in the not too distant future, according to a fresh report.
Chelsea and Real Madrid do regular transfer business
Prior to the arrival of Todd Boehly and Enzo Maresca, Chelsea and Real Madrid have not been strangers to doing transfer business together. 18 players have played for both clubs, and Eden Hazard, Antonio Rudiger and Thibaut Courtois have all made the move fromthe Premier League giants to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent seasons, all to differing outcomes.
Prior to that, the likes of Ricardo Carvalho and Arjen Robben also made the switch, while Mateo Kovacic, Claude Makelele and Alvaro Morata have all moved the other way.
Chelsea now want to sign the new "heir to Thiago Silva" for Enzo Maresca
The Blues are keen to strengthen their backline under the former Leicester City boss.
ByBen Browning Dec 9, 2024
In recent years, it seemed most likely that Reece James would be the next one to tread that path, with reports claiming that Los Blancos were eyeing a move for the Englishman to replace Dani Carvajal 12 months ago.
However, no such move materialised, and injuries have halted Reece James’ career once more after he missed most of last season following surgery. In the time since, Real Madrid have changed their focus, and now want to sign England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign and could well leave Liverpool to join friend Jude Bellingham in Spain.
Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold
Though that may spell good news for Chelsea, Real Madrid’s newfound interest in one of James’ teammates at Stamford Bridge may be far worse.
Real Madrid want "special" Chelsea man
That comes as a shock report in Spain claims that Real Madrid are now monitoring Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer ahead of a potential move for the England international. Palmer found the net twice in the 4-2 win over Tottenham to take his tally to 11 goals for the season alongside six assists, and helping Chelsea move up to second in the Premier League in the process.
In fact, since moving to Stamford Bridge a little over 12 months ago, the former Manchester City man has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s best players, registering 50 goal contributions in just 47 outings.
After his latest performance, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher dubbed him a “special” player and one of the best in Europe.
“He is going to go down as one of the biggest players for Chelsea if he keeps doing what he is doing. He is a very special player, and that’s not just in the Premier League it is in Europe and world football as well”, he explained.

And that has reportedly caught the eye of the European Champions, with the report claiming that Real Madrid “have him in their sights” for a future window and Florentino Perez values “both the midfielder’s footballing qualities and his potential to become a global icon”, in keeping with his former Galacticos project.
In truth, any deal in the near future seems highly unlikely, with Palmer and Bellingham already fighting for the same position for England, and likely to end up doing so for Real Madrid.
That is even before the cost of the operation is taken into account, with Palmer still having a mammoth nine years left to run on his £130,000 a week deal at Stamford Bridge and not agitating for a move, which would likely force Real Madrid to put up a record fee to land the Englishman.
With Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler all among the stable of young talent already at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal, and Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr both key memebers of the squad, adding Palmer seems more like a pipe dream than a reality.

Rangers look set to be without a key player ahead of their Scottish Premiership meeting with Kilmarnock this week, in a blow for manager Philippe Clement.
Clement clinging on as Rangers manager
The Gers picked up a much-needed victory in the league on Sunday afternoon, winning 1-0 away to St Johnstone to just about keep in touch with Celtic and Aberdeen, getting to within seven points of the latter and having a game in hand.
It was a result that has helped ease a little pressure on Clement, who continues to battle to save his job at Rangers, following an unconvincing start to the season. It was far from the greatest performance, however, with an own goal needed to get them over the line, and further improvements are needed.
Next up for the Gers is a league clash with Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday evening, with Celtic making the trip to Aberdeen at the same time, meaning at least one of their rivals will drop points.
Another win is essential for Rangers, not only in terms of their slim title hopes, but also when it comes to Clement remaining in charge heading into Christmas. With the match not too far away, an injury blow has emerged from the St Johnstone game, though.
"Unlucky" Rangers player could miss Kilmarnock game
Speaking after Sunday’s action, Clement admitted that Dujon Sterling could miss Rangers’ visit of Killie, having to see a specialist to get to the bottom of a blocked nerve issue.
“Dujon is unlucky, because it’s not a real injury. It’s a blocked nerve, so he has to see a specialist to unblock it, to get treatment and because of that, he was not available today. We will see if he’s available on Wednesday or not. It’s not a long-term thing, but those things happen.”
Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.
Being without Sterling on Wednesday night would be a blow for Rangers, considering he has featured plenty this season, making 10 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, as well as playing four times in the Europa League, even registering an assist in last week’s 4-1 win away to Nice.
Meanwhile, Michael Stewart spoke of his admiration for the 25-year-old after he signed a new deal at Ibrox, saying back in October: “We are delighted that Dujon has committed his future to the club. He has become a vital member of the squad over the past year since I came to the club, showing his potential in several positions and always being ready for the team.
“We are going to continue working hard together with him to get everything out of his abilities and believe he will continue to have a big impact on the squad.”

On the plus side, Clement hasn’t completely ruled the £22,000-a-week Sterling out of the midweek game at Ibrox, but the fact that he missed St Johnstone and is seeing a specialist does suggest that he may have to sit it out.
