A dream for Garnacho: Chelsea plot late raid for "generational" PL star

Chelsea haven’t been a stranger to a transfer in January, previously making numerous superb additions who have impressed during their time at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz joined the Blues from Benfica back in 2011, wasting no time in making an immediate impact in the Premier League, winning the Player of the Month award just a couple of months into his spell.

During his first spell, he won a Champions League, Europa League and an FA Cup before departing for PSG – banking the club a huge profit before returning in 2016.

Gary Cahill is another on the list of superb January additions, arriving for just £7m in 2012 from Bolton Wanderers, playing an influential role in various levels of success, including multiple league titles.

Fast-forward to the present day, boss Enzo Maresca has the opportunity to land a player who could follow in their footsteps with a late move to West London.

Chelsea plot move for £70m PL talent

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are plotting a late raid for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo before Monday’s transfer deadline.

It’s not the first time the Blues have been touted with a move for the 19-year-old this window, with the Red Devils potentially open to selling him to raise funds for PSR.

The report claims that Ruben Amorim doesn’t want to part ways with the talented teenager, but that if an offer in the region of £70m was presented, they would consider selling the homegrown talent.

Mainoo has failed to start any of the last two matches for United, potentially opening the door to a move away from Old Trafford, but Maresca’s side would have to fork out a pretty penny for his signature.

However, any move could see the Englishman link up with another player at the Bridge should they decide to pull the trigger and make a move, subsequently handing Maresca a huge chance of claiming Champions League football for next season.

Why Mainoo could star with Garnacho at Chelsea

Mainoo isn’t the only United player to be linked with a move to join the Blues this month, with winger Alejandro Garnacho another player who could swap Manchester for the capital.

The Argentine could leave for the same reason as the midfielder but would demand a cheaper fee in the region of £55m, with Napoli also in the race for his services.

The Blues do have a large selection of attackers already on the books, but Garnacho would offer something different off the left-hand side, with his pace and direct running – which has seen him register 13 combined goals and assists in 2024/25.

A move for Mainoo would allow the pair to settle into life at the club, providing a smooth transition, with the duo able to benefit one another with their respective skill sets and boost the Blues’ chances of a top-four finish.

The “generational” Englishman, as dubbed by journalist Andy Dunn, has registered an 87% pass accuracy this campaign, whilst averaging 1.5 successful dribbles per 90 in 2024/25 – having the tools to provide his current teammate with opportunities should they join Maresca’s side.

He’s also won an average of 1.7 tackles and 6.6 duels per 90, having the combative nature to regain possession, before providing for the Argentine in attacking areas – making him the perfect box-to-box option for the Blues.

As for the winger, he’s posted 3.5 shots per 90, along with seven touches in the opposition box per game, hugely benefitting from the midfielder’s ability to get the ball into forward areas, starring together as they’ve done so far in the North West.

The pair would cost a huge sum this month, but their talents would prove to be worth any money forked out for their services – also having the potential to improve further given their tender ages.

With just a couple of days left in the window, the Blues hierarchy must act quickly to secure the respective deals and take advantage of United’s situation with moves like this unlikely to happen again in the future.

Arsenal must rue selling incredible star who's outscoring Havertz & Watkins

The mood around Arsenal on Sunday night was a brilliant one.

Mikel Arteta’s side not only beat Manchester City but utterly demolished them 5-1, and while the pick of the goals came from Hale End graduates Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, Kai Havertz also scored a brilliant curler of his own.

However, for everything the German did right against the champions, he also missed a golden opportunity in the first half, an opportunity which reaffirmed why so many fans were desperate for the club to pull the trigger and sign a striker before the transfer window slammed shut last night.

Alas, despite plenty of links, including some particularly strong ones to Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, the club did not get themselves a new number nine, and what’s worse is the fact that they sold one in the summer who’s now outscoring Havertz and the Englishman.

Had you asked Arsenal fans what area of the squad needed to be strengthened last summer, we bet a significant portion of them would’ve said striker, yet the club clearly felt differently and opted to sign Riccardo Calafiori, Neto, Raheem Sterling and Mikel Merino.

However, the team’s need for a reliable number nine only became more evident as the campaign progressed, and when Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus both went down with long-term injuries within a few weeks of each other, it could be said the team were in a full-blown crisis at the top of the pitch.

So it was hardly a surprise when the club started to be linked with a whole host of tremendously exciting strikers last month.

One of the first major links of the window was to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who already has 17 goal involvements to his name this season, but despite Arteta and Co’s best efforts, the Bundesliga outfit were adamant that he would not be moving prior to the summer.

Another centre-forward constantly touted for a move to the Emirates was Dušan Vlahović, who’s scored 13 goals and provided two assists this term, but once again, nothing came of their supposed interest.

However, the most significant link of all came towards the end of the window, when it was reported mid-way through last week that the club had made an offer for Villa’s Watkins, only for it to be turned down and then fade into nothing.

Given the state of Arsenal’s attack and the chances they have to win something this season, it would be hard to describe their failure to sign a striker as anything other than that, as a failure, and what makes it worse is that a player sold in the summer is now outscoring Havertz and Watkins.

The former Arsenal star outscoring Havertz and Watkins

So, Arsenal saw a lot of players leave the club on permanent deals in the summer, from Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah to Aaron Ramsdale and Mohamed Elneny, but the player we are talking about is Mika Biereth.

The Danish sharpshooter spent the second half of last season on loan with Austrian outfit Sturm Graz, where, in 22 games, he scored nine goals, provided four assists and did enough to earn a £4m move to the club.

This season, he took another step forward, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists in just 25 games, which was enough to catch the eye of Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco, who opted to splash an initial £10.8m on the 21-year-old early last month.

Since moving to the French Riviera, the “incredible” poacher, as dubbed by podcaster and Hale End expert Will Balsam, has scored four goals and provided one assist in just four games, taking his tally for the season up to 18 goals and six assists in 19 games, which is not only incredible but also better than both Watkins and Havertz.

For his part, the former Exeter City star has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in 33 appearances so far this season, which is undeniably impressive but still seven goals and four goal involvements short of the Dane’s tally.

Likewise, the Gunners’ number 29 has scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 33 games this season, but once again, that’s three goals and four goal involvements short of the player sold for £4m just seven months ago.

Now, there is certainly an argument to be made that the 6 foot 2 prospect has spent much of the season in a far easier league, but since making his move to France, which is still a top-five league, he’s looked just as dangerous.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s need for another striker is now impossible to ignore, and while we’ll never know how he’d have got on had he stayed, it certainly looks as if the club made a mistake in selling Biereth last summer.

Liverpool now in constant contact to sign "incredible" £87m sensation

With Liverpool preparing to splash the cash for the first time under Arne Slot, those at Anfield are reportedly in constant contact to sign one of Europe’s most impressive players ahead of interest from Real Madrid.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds, whilst still top of the Premier League, looked far from convincing against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out as Matheus Cunha passed what some will hope to have been an Anfield audition with flying colours. Even as the Brazilian threatened to steal the headlines, however, Mohamed Salah was once again the match-winner.

With a trip to Aston Villa awaiting them on Wednesday night, it doesn’t get any easier for the Premier League leaders, who have 13 games remaining to fend off any Arsenal attempt to hijack their push for silverware.

Of course, once those 13 games are played out and the title is decided, Liverpool will have no choice but to turn their attention to the summer transfer window. And given that Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to depart as free agents at the end of the season, it’s fair to say that the Reds could have plenty of making up to do.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are now in constant contact to sign Florian Wirtz, who is valued at a hefty £87m by Bayer Leverkusen. They’re not alone in their interest, however, with Real Madrid, Manchester City and Arsenal also keen on the attacking midfielder.

A deal will become easier for any of the four interested parties if Xabi Alonso leaves Leverkusen at the end of the campaign, with the Spaniard’s future reportedly playing a large part in Wirtz’s decision. One of the most talented players in Europe, Wirtz could form one of the deals of the summer.

"Incredible" Wirtz would be blockbuster move

Losing any one of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold would be a major blow this summer. Losing all three at once would be indefensible. But, one way to make up for that in part would be to welcome a player of Wirtz’s quality. Better yet, of course, would be to keep hold of those three players and then add the German to an already-stacked squad.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

When the summer arrives, the Reds should go all out for a player who would move straight into Slot’s system as the attacking midfielder in his 4-2-3-1 – perhaps replacing Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai.

The stats certainly don’t lie and it’s as clear as ever that Wirtz would take Liverpool’s attack to a new level entirely. What’s more, his ability to lead the line, as he has done in a partnership at Leverkusen at times, would also hand Slot an instant boost.

Dubbed “incredible” by former Chelsea and Liverpool man Joe Cole last season, Wirtz is one to watch this summer.

Liverpool could sell "world-class" 28 y/o who’s frustrating Slot with Diaz

Liverpool are believed to be weighing up the idea of selling a “world-class” player at the end of this season alongside Luis Diaz, according to a big new claim.

Diaz linked with Liverpool exit

Arne Slot is blessed with a plethora of elite attacking options in his squad, not least Mohamed Salah, who is arguably the best footballer in the world on current form, looking like becoming the first-ever player to win the PFA Player of the Year award on three occasions.

The Dutchman also has Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa to call upon, however, allowing Liverpool so much firepower and playing a big role in them topping the Premier League and winning the 36-team Champions League group.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz in action with Nottingham Forest'sMurillo

That said, a fresh report has said that the Reds could decide to move Diaz on once the current season reaches its conclusion, having started to frustrate Slot.

The Colombian has enjoyed a good season overall, scoring a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen and adjusting well to a new central role, but it could be that Liverpool’s head coach doesn’t see him as the solution in that position, wanting to bring in an out-and-out centre forward this summer instead.

Liverpool could sell "world-class" player

According to that same update from Anfield Watch, Liverpool could also look to sell Jota in the summer, with potential huge changes to the attack being made.

The report says that there is “doubt” over the Portuguese’s future at Anfield, with injuries continuing to keep him out of the side too often. He is “another” who is thought to be “frustrating” Slot. It’s worth noting that Nunez could also be moved on, ahead of potential major attacking surgery.

Diogo Jota celebrates for Liverpool

If Jota was available every week, the situation would likely be very different, considering the match-winning quality he possesses, with Jurgen Klopp once saying of him:

“We were completely convinced when he arrived at the club he would help us massively. Since he is here he has made another step, he has turned into a really world-class striker. Mentality mixed with quality is the reason we signed him. Of course he scored two goals, he is incredibly important to us, so it is that mix of his skills that is really exciting. He is in good shape as well and long may it continue.”

Jota’s inability to stay fit for large periods is now a big issue, however, and at 28 years of age, it is hard to see his injury-prone nature changing now, especially considering how much he puts his body on the line during games, showing great bravery.

Contact has been made regarding the transfer.

ByHenry Jackson Feb 9, 2025

The Portugal international’s contract expires in 2027, too, so this summer may act as one of the last chances for Liverpool to earn excellent money for him, so there could be a sense in moving him on. Selling him, Diaz and Nunez all at once would be a bold approach, though.

Former Railways spinner Syed Hyder Ali dies at 79

Syed Hyder Ali, the former Railways left-arm spinner, has died after battling a prolonged illness. He was 79.”He was suffering from chest congestion for some time now. After a routine check-up with his doctor, we were returning home when he suddenly collapsed. He passed away around 1.30 pm on Saturday,” his son Raza Ali, also a former first-class cricketer, told PTI.Having begun his career as a tearaway left-arm quick, Hyder turned to left-arm spin on the insistence of former Railways captain William Ghosh. He would hone his skills on docile tracks around India in the 1960s and 1970s.Hyder played 113 first-class matches during the course of a 25-year first-class career. These brought him 366 wickets at an impressive average of 19.71. He was also a valuable lower order batter, who made 3125 first-class runs, including three centuries and 10 half-centuries.After retirement in 1987, Hyder continued to play a key role at Railways, overlooking the cricket structure. He also served as selector when Railways won the Ranji Trophy in 2001-02 and 2004-05.Sanjay Bangar, the former India and Railways allrounder, remembered Hyder as a “stalwart” and a “well-respected” individual.”Very unfortunate to hear the tragic news,” he said. “I never got a chance to play alongside him, but I played when he was the chief selector of the Railways team. He was a stalwart. A soft-spoken and a well-respected individual.”Vinod Sharma, also a former Railways player and coach, termed Hyder’s passing as a “huge loss” while terming him the “godfather” of Railways cricket.Hyder’s best years came at a time when India’s spin stocks were at an all-time high. Matchday 11 of the 2025 MLS campaign played out as expected, for the most part. Of the 15 matches, only three results surprised, as the hierarchies in the league take shape.

Bruce Arena and the San Jose Earthquakes put four goals past the in-form Portland Timbers, while FC Cincinnati were upset 1-0 by NYCFC – and with the loss, fell off the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They now sit third behind both the Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union, who secured wins.

Upon his return to the XI, Christian Benteke led D.C. United to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids, another surprise result.

Elsewhere, Inter Miami cruised to a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, with both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scoring, while San Diego FC stomped FC Dallas 5-0. The Seattle Sounders, meanwhile, put four goals past St. Louis CITY SC for their third win in the last four matches.
