Holder and co stoutly defend 149 as West Indies beat India

Hardik Pandya and his new-look batting line-up were pinned down by the hosts’ discipline on a slow pitch in Tarouba

Jaffer: India need to ‘stick to a combination’ heading into the T20 World Cup

A T20 team built with the future in mind was unable to deal with the challenges of the present as West Indies made India scratch, struggle and finally submit. It was a hard-earned victory too. West Indies repelled a three-man spin attack on a slow Tarouba pitch to put up 149, their captain, Rovman Powell, who was discarded in the preceding one-day series, top-scoring with 48. That total proved four more than enough as the experience of Jason Holder, the guile of Akeal Hosein and the gumption of Romario Shepherd combined to buck a recent trend. West Indies haven’t had a lot of success against India in T20Is over the last five years. So this one will have tasted extra sweet.India, West Indies pick up over-rate fines

Both teams were found to be short of the required over-rate in the first T20I, with India picking up a fine of 5% of their match fee (for being one over behind) and West Indies getting 10% (two overs behind).
Both teams also had the in-game penalty of one fielder fewer in the deep for every over they bowled beyond the stipulated time for the start of the 19th over. So, India bowled their final over with only four outside the 30-yard circle, while West Indies had to do that for the final two overs of the chase.

The game was in the balance when Hardik Pandya was bowled in the chase with India needing 37 off 29 balls. It was still in the balance when India needed ten off the final over with three wickets in hand. Shepherd tipped it West Indies’ way, showing everyone that they can be competitive even when their seniors are available.Hosein, who was back from the Major League Cricket tournament in the USA, had set the tone for West Indies by taking out Shubman Gill in the powerplay. The left-arm fingerspinner then returned to finish with outstanding figures of 4-0-17-1, including 14 dots. Holder, Obed McCoy and Shepherd all took pace off the ball to make life difficult for India’s batters. On such a pitch, Suryakumar Yadav could score just one of his 21 runs behind square. Both debutant Tilak Varma, who had top-scored for India with 39 off 22 balls, and captain Hardik were done in by offcutters. There would be no way back for India, despite a late cameo from Arshdeep Singh.King and Pooran tee offBrandon King and Nicholas Pooran, fresh off a hundred in the MLC final, were responsible for 51 off the 54 runs West Indies had scored in the powerplay. With the pitch expected to slow down as the game progressed, King went harder against the new ball, pumping debutant Mukesh Kumar for back-to-back fours in his first over. King also lofted Axar Patel for a six before Yuzvendra Chahal trapped him in his first over.Pooran took over from King and laid into India’s spinners with his variety of sweeps. Despite Pooran’s presence in the middle, Hardik gave the last over of the powerplay to Axar, who ended up leaking 14.India pull WI backAxar didn’t bowl an over after that, but Kuldeep Yadav, Chahal and the seamers used the pitch to their advantage to apply the brakes on West Indies’ innings.Kuldeep and Chahal split three wickets between them on their reunion, but it was Hardik who claimed the prized scalp of Pooran for 41 off 34 balls.Jason Holder picked up 2 for 19 in four overs•AFP/Getty Images

Powell led a charmed life – he was dropped twice – but managed to repair West Indies’ innings with 48 off 32 balls. Even though he didn’t always pick the wristspinners out of the hand, he showed courage by constantly charging them, and once he got to the pitch of the ball, the direction of the turn didn’t matter.Mukesh and Arshdeep then bossed the death overs with their yorkers and hard-to-hit full tosses. India didn’t concede a single boundary in the last three overs of the innings.Tilak’s arrivalIndia then had a skittish start, losing both Gill and Ishan Kishan in the powerplay. Hosein made the new ball dip and turn to have Gill stumped for 3 off 9 balls. Kishan also tried to manufacture a shot by advancing at McCoy, but he ended up mis-hitting it to mid-on.In the next over, however, Tilak announced his arrival into international cricket with back-to-back sixes off 140-plus kph rockets from Alzarri Joseph. Then when Shepherd went full, Tilak drilled him over extra-cover for six more. Shepherd, though, struck back to hoodwink Tilak with a cutter. Tilak was the only proper batter from either team to have struck at over 150 on this pitch. The result may not have gone India’s way but defeat can be a good teacher and this team has a lot of room to grow.WI complete the jobThe fielding had cost West Indies a spot in the upcoming ODI World Cup, but on Thursday, it was particularly sharp, best exemplified by Shimron Hetmyer’s diving catch at extra-cover to dismiss Suryakumar. Kyle Mayers then produced a direct hit at the death to run Sanju Samson out for a run-a-ball 12.All the seamers kept hitting the pitch with quick short balls or slower cutters. Holder even bowled a double wicket-maiden in the 16th over. West Indies’ slow over-rate meant they had to contend with having only four fielders on the boundary for the last two overs of their defence, but McCoy and Shepherd coolly finished it off for them.

Harmanpreet to miss start of Asian Games after pleading guilty to ICC charges

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to miss the first two matches of the Asian Games, having been suspended by the ICC for breaching the code of conduct during the final ODI of the Bangladesh series.Harmanpreet, who had reacted angrily to her dismissal by smashing the stumps after being caught, pleaded guilty to two different charges pressed by the match referee Akhtar Ahmed. In a media release on Tuesday, the ICC confirmed that Harmanpreet received three demerit points relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. Harmanpreet becomes the first women’s player to be handed a Level 2 sanction since the ICC started listing code of conduct breaches publicly in 2016. The India captain was also fined 50% of her match fee for the same offence.Harmanpreet also received a separate Level 1 penalty along with a fine of 25% of her match fee and one demerit point for “public criticism” of match officials, having described the umpiring in the Bangladesh series as “pathetic”.As per the ICC’s rules, when a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points. Anything in the range of four to seven demerit points equates to two suspension points i.e. a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, depending on which comes first in the player’s schedule. The last time Harmanpreet earned a demerit point was during the semi-final of the 2017 ODI World Cup against Australia. After working legspinner Kristen Beams through midwicket, she was involved in a mix-up with Deepti Sharma before they completed the double that brought up Harmanpreet’s century. Instead of celebrating the milestone, Harmanpreet flung her helmet to the ground and fired verbal volleys at Deepti. Harmanpreet was found guilty of a Level 1 offence, which she had accepted. After the game in Dhaka, India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana supported Harmanpreet’s actions by saying her captain disagreed with the umpire’s call and that led to an angry reaction. Mandhana also said she expected “neutral umpires” to be present when India tour Bangladesh next time.Players breaking the stumps – either with the bat or by kicking them – while reacting to umpiring decisions is a rare occurrence in top-flight cricket. Coincidentally, the most recent case also happened in Bangladesh: in 2021, Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan was suspended for three matches and fined US$ 5800 (approx.) during a Dhaka Premier League T20 match between Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club.India women’s next campaign will be at the Asian Games in Hanghzou in China between September 23 and October 8. India will be fielding both men’s and women’s teams at the Games, which features the T20 format.

Arsenal's "huge talent" was the original Lewis-Skelly, then he left for £0

Arsenal’s Hale End academy is quickly becoming recognised as one of the best youth systems in the country.

It’s an academy set-up to have produced Jack Wilshere, to have brought through Emile Smith Rowe and to have nurtured Bukayo Saka.

The stable of talent they have coming through isn’t slowing down either with Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly both becoming huge parts of Mikel Arteta’s first-team this season.

15-year-old Max Dowman is also making a huge impression for the U18s this term and has already become a household name among Arsenal supporters despite not making his senior debut yet.

Nwaneri – who made his bow at the same age – has understandably been collecting most of the hype this season. Only Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen scored more goals for a Premier League club in all competitions before turning 18 than the talented Arsenal gem.

He’s not the only one to have replicated their feats this term.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's England debut in numbers

When Thomas Tuchel announced his first England squad a little over a week ago, there were some notable surprises.

Tuchel-England-squad

Jordan Henderson, now of Ajax, was back in the squad. There was a place for Marcus Rashford too. Yet, Lewis-Skelly’s inclusion wasn’t that much of a shock.

After all, his performances since making his first-team debut last September have been nothing short of incredible.

A midfielder by trade, the 18-year-old has played as a left-back, inverting into central pockets of space and driving forward with the ball. He’s been here, there and everywhere, something symbolised by his only club goal to date, a gorgeous curling effort against Manchester City. We all remember the celebration.

Well, if he needed to make another statement to the doubters over his qualities, he did so on his England debut, a 2-0 win over Albania on Friday night.

Lewis-Skelly started at left-back and scored the first goal of the Tuchel era, racing in behind to get on the end of a quite delicious ball from Jude Bellingham, before nutmegging the goalkeeper. Only the aforementioned Owen and Rooney have been younger when scoring England goals.

His interview with clubmate Declan Rice after the game was lovely, with the Arsenal midfielder hailing him as a “fearless” talent.

The goal wasn’t the only impressive part of the teenager’s game, as the numbers below suggest.

It’s been quite the rise for the Arsenal teen this season. He’s featured on 26 occasions for the first team in 2024/25 and as Rice says, this is only the beginning.

Arsenal will just hope his career doesn’t go in the same direction as another of Hale End’s best talents.

What happened to Arsenal's original Myles Lewis-Skelly

Through every academy there are thousands of players who never quite made the grade, eventually falling out of football.

For plenty, they stay in football but end up in the football league. Then, you have the elite, the players who do make the grade, graduating out of the academy and thriving at the top level.

For Ainsley Maitland-Niles, that story is certainly true. A midfielder by trade – like Lewis-Skelly – he made his debut for the senior side on 9th December 2014.

It was a Champions League tie with Galatasaray where Arsene Wenger introduced the teenager into the action as a substitute for Aaron Ramsey.

He was just 17 years and 102 days old, making him the second youngest player to have represented the club in the Champions League, behind Jack Wilshere. His future looked bright.

However, with a number of top midfielders in his way, the spritely academy graduate ended up playing more as a wing-back or full-back. You can see where we’re heading here with the Lewis-Skelly comparisons.

He even made his England debut at left-back, appearing in that position due to injuries elsewhere.

However, while Maitland-Niles looked like he had huge potential, he was never hugely keen on establishing himself as a full-back and wanted to play in midfield.

Indeed, upon heading on loan to West Brom in 2021, Sam Allardyce noted: “The problem with Ainsley is his position. His only position that he wants to play is centre midfield. The reason he came to West Brom – which he forced through – Edu and Arteta didn’t want him to come, was because I said he’d play in midfield.”

Well, with that in mind, his future was never going to be at Arsenal under the current manager. In the summer of 2023, his contract expired and he left on a free transfer. Lyon came calling where, coincidentally, he’s still playing as a full-back.

During his debut campaign in France, he made 29 appearances, catching the eye with two goals and four assists while this term, the 27-year-old has played 34 times, scoring one and supplying five assists.

His numbers and overall performances in Ligue 1 have actually seen calls for an England inclusion, with French football expert Matt Spiro commenting in December: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles should now be in the conversation [for England]. He’s playing the best football of his career with Lyon.”

So, while things didn’t pan out as he would have hoped at the Emirates, it’s nice to see Arsenal’s original Lewis-Skelly thriving elsewhere.

Arsenal starlet was ahead of Nwaneri & Lewis-Skelly, then he left for £1m

Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly are two of the finest talents to emerge from the Arsenal academy.

Trott: 'The longer Gurbaz bats, the more we win'

The Afghanistan coach believes getting Gurbaz to understand every game isn’t a T20 is the key to his ODI evolution

Mohammad Isam08-Jul-2023Rahmanullah Gurbaz staying still and smacking the ball gives Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott a lot of pleasure. Gurbaz’s career-best 145 consigned Bangladesh to a 142-run defeat as the visitors clinched the three-match ODI series with one game still remaining. Afghanistan put up a formidable 331 for 9 in their 50 overs, banking on record 256-run opening stand between Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who also made a century.Gurbaz struck 13 fours and eight sixes in his 125-ball stay, and was particularly destructive in his final 25 balls off which he smacked 45 runs. Afghanistan raised the tempo during that portion of their innings, scoring 69 runs in six overs leading up to Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 37th over.Trott said Gurbaz and Ibrahim complemented each other very well.”He [Gurbaz] can score everywhere around the ground,” Trott said. “He sometimes rushes it and thinks that every game is a T20. The longer Gurbaz bats for us, the more chance we have of winning. I was obviously very happy with how [the opening partnership] was going, especially the shots that they played. It was certainly on a wicket where if you bowl well, you can create some pressure. It had a little variable bounce.”We were going to bat first if we won the toss, having looked at the weather. There was no rain. There wasn’t as much grass as the previous match. I think the way that Gurbaz played in his natural attacking style, while Ibrahim was a nice foil at the other side. Gurbaz didn’t have to worry about another new batsman at the other end. It was a good sort of dovetailing if you like. I was happy with the first 35 overs.”Gurbaz doesn’t need to worry too much about his technique, Trott believes. All he needs is to stand tall and let his instincts do the rest. “I think it was about Gurbaz being as still as possible at release,” Trott said. “Sometimes he is moving. Sometimes a player as talented as Gurbaz can get wrapped up in technique instead of just watching the ball.”It is about making the game as simple as possible with the hand-eye coordination that Gurbaz has. It is about just being simple in the mind, technically as well. He has worked hard, so hopefully he can back it up in the third ODI.”Afghanistan players have a chat with coach Jonathan Trott at training•Munir Uz Zaman/AFP/Getty ImagesZadran’s improvement also impressed the coach, who reckons the openrr is showing maturity beyond his age. His two hundreds and two fifties against Sri Lanka caught the eye, and he made 100 off 119 balls against Bangladesh, batting until the 46th over to ensure his side got close to the 300-run mark.”He [Zadran] is very good,” Trott said. “He will improve as he gets older. He showed maturity in the knock realising that Gurbaz was attacking. Sometimes for a young player, you try to copy that, and maybe get out of your little bubble. It was important that he stayed there till the end. Otherwise we may have lost our way if he got out as well. Credit to him for a fantastic innings.”Afghanistan’s ODI series win also comes off the back of a massive Test defeat to Bangladesh last month. They lost by 546 runs, lasting only 39 and 36 overs respectively in the two innings.”I arrived in Bangladesh disappointed with the way the Test went,” Trott said. “We learned as a side. We realised how much progress Bangladesh has made in all areas of the game. We needed to be at the top of our game to come here and compete.”It is important that we focus on the next game as well. We can’t get too wound up or hyped up. We can’t rest on our laurels if we want to improve as a side looking ahead to the Asia Cup and World Cup. When you go to competitions and Cups, you need to keep winning.”Afghanistan also bowled well to defend their total. Bangladesh lost wickets in clusters of three each; the first three for 25 runs, the second three for seven runs and the last three wickets for 30 runs. Trott felt that Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman gave Afghanistan the perfect start with the ball.”Fazal started the first over with a maiden. You want to start well with the ball defending 330,” Trott said. “Sometimes you can let the opposition get a good start. The way that he [Farooqi] and Mujeeb bowled were fantastic. I think we learned how to bowl on this wicket. Hopefully we can apply that in the third game.”

It's not Isak: "Superstar" striker with 33 G/A now high on Arsenal's list

A “superstar” striker, who has been in prolific form this season, is now high on Arsenal’s list of targets for the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Gunners lacking striker options

The Gunners have been unlucky on the injury front this season, with both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz being ruled out with long-term issues, meaning Mikel Merino has been used in a makeshift striker role in recent weeks.

However, Mikel Arteta will be keen to ensure a similar situation doesn’t arise next season, and the need to bring in a new striker may be exacerbated by the fact there are question marks over whether Havertz is a true number 9.

The likes of Moise Kean, Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak make up Arteta’s shortlist, with a recent report revealing a £101m bid could be submitted for the Newcastle United star, which could be difficult for the Magpies to refuse.

Arteta is a huge admirer of the former Real Sociedad man, which indicates he could be a major target, but a different forward is now rising up the shortlist.

Arsenal could make move for £243k-p/w star who has strong bond with Arteta

The Gunners have identified a “world-class” forward as a top target, and could make an approach during the summer transfer window.

1 ByDominic Lund Mar 19, 2025

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Arsenal are now becoming increasingly keen on signing Lille striker Jonathan David, with the Canadian now high on their list of targets.

A number of top clubs are in the race for David, including Barcelona and Liverpool, while West Ham United are also very keen, having already reached out to his agents to discuss a potential deal.

An added bonus that comes with signing the 25-year-old is the fact he is set to be available on a free transfer this summer, which could be helpful for the Gunners, who may not have as much money to spend as some of their rivals.

"Superstar" David in prolific form this season

Lille fans will undoubtedly be sad to see the Canada international leave this summer, given that he has played a major role in keeping them competitive in Ligue 1, scoring 13 goals en route to their title triumph in the 2020/21 campaign.

Since then, the Brooklyn-born striker has gone from strength to strength, amassing 33 goal contributions in all competitions this season, which includes seven goals and two assists in 10 Champions League games.

The Lille star has also received high praise from Canada teammate Jonathan Osorio, who described him as a “superstar”, and having been on fire in the Champions League this season, it could be time to move to one of Europe’s top clubs.

It is clear to see why Isak may be the preferable target for Arsenal, given that the Sweden international has proven himself in the Premier League, but David’s performances in Ligue 1 and Europe suggest he could be a fantastic alternative.
