Molineux ruled out of WBBL in blow for Melbourne Renegades

The allrounder is still recovering from the ACL injury sustained last year leaving the club needing a new captain

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2023Melbourne Renegades’ captain Sophie Molineux has been ruled out of the entire WBBL as she continues her recovery from the ACL injury suffered last season.Molineux, the left-arm spin-bowling allrounder, picked up the injury against Melbourne Stars in November and is now hoping to return to domestic cricket in the second half of this campaign following the WBBL.It was announced on Thursday that Molineux had signed a new two-year deal with Renegades.”I’m really disappointed that my ongoing recovery from an ACL reconstruction means that I won’t be fit and available in time for this season,” she said. “But I’m very much appreciative of the support the club has shown me during the process and I’m very keen to repay their support by helping the team in any way possible over the coming months.”Molineux’s absence means Renegades will need a new captain for the upcoming season, and it could be they look to one of their overseas signings having secured Harmanpreet Kaur and Hayley Matthews at the draft. Another option would be Australia allrounder Georgia Wareham.”While we’d love to have her on the field this year, it’s important Sophie returns to full fitness and her leadership around the group off the field will be just as important,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said.Renegades will also be without fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck for the whole WBBL after she underwent shoulder surgery following the Australia A tour of England earlier this year.

Cole Palmer's best friend! Chelsea star admits to leaning on Blues team-mate after tough year at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has revealed the crucial support he’s received from team-mate Tosin Adarabioyo after a testing 2025 at Stamford Bridge. Despite a strong start to the campaign, Palmer struggled with form and pressure in the second half of the campaign but has credited the centre-back for being a constant source of encouragement on and off the pitch.

Palmer reveals support from AdarabioyoCelebrated Palmeiras goal with his teammateLots of expectation placed on Palmer at ChelseaFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Palmer has admitted to enduring a challenging stretch in 2025, particularly after January, when his goal and assist tally dropped significantly. The Chelsea forward has now admitted that he leaned on Adarabioyo, a long-time friend and his former Manchester City academy teammate, for emotional and mental support during this time. Earlier this week, Palmer celebrated his Club World Cup quarter-final goal against Palmeiras by running straight to Adarabioyo in a show of appreciation.

Speaking to the media, Palmer said: “I've had a difficult time these past whatever months on and off the pitch, but he's always been there for me. He's helped me a lot.”

Adarabioyo responded: "I've known Cole since he was a young boy so even me seeing him on those big banners makes me very, very proud. I think people do forget that he's still 22, 23 years of age and he's one of the faces of this tournament. Obviously his life has changed in the past two years.

"I banter him some time and tell him he's a little superstar. But yeah, he handles it very well. He knows his focus is brilliant on football. He loves playing football and that's Cole Palmer for you.

"You say he's receiving a lot of scrutiny. I don't think Cole really looks at that and us as team-mates aren't really looking at that. He performs at a very high level every time he steps on the pitch. So our job is not just to help Cole Palmer but every single player on the pitch perform as well as they can."

Palmer burst onto the scene last season but struggled to maintain his red-hot form, especially as scrutiny around Chelsea’s inconsistent performances intensified. He still managed to shine in key moments, including the Europa Conference League final and recent Club World Cup fixtures. With added pressure as one of Chelsea’s young stars, Palmer’s ability to manage expectations has been a key talking point.

Mohammad Hafeez to serve as Pakistan head coach for tour of Australia and NZ

ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB will merge the roles of team director and head coach into one

Mohammad Hafeez will serve as Pakistan’s head coach in Australia and New Zealand. Hafeez had also been appointed as Pakistan team director – the position Mickey Arthur held until now – on Wednesday after a reshuffle followed Babar Azam’s resignation as Pakistan captain.ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB will merge the roles of team director and head coach into one, a dual role the former Pakistan allrounder will execute for three Test matches in Australia and five T20Is in New Zealand, in December and January.Related

Explainer – Making sense of Babar Azam's unexpected resignation as Pakistan captain

Babar Azam resigns as Pakistan captain in all formats

It is a significant step up for Hafeez, 43, who last played for Pakistan two years ago and does not have any coaching experience until now. But it is understood the current administration views the two separate roles for team director and head coach as superfluous.Indeed, Pakistan did not have a team director until earlier this year. Former PCB chairman Najam Sethi, who had made no secret of his pursuit of Arthur, struck a deal with him that would see Arthur travel with the team for certain series and tournaments, while maintaining oversight when he could not be with the side under the stewardship of Grant Bradburn. When both Arthur and Bradburn were with the side, it was felt there was no distinct difference between their specific jobs, something that has prompted the current PCB administration to do away with the extra role. The decision caps what have been a remarkably tumultuous 24 hours in Pakistan cricket. Babar resigned as captain from all three formats after he was told he would be relieved of his duties in the two white-ball formats. While that is a decision the PCB management committee likely lacks the authority to take, Babar opting to resign paved the way for Shan Masood’s appointment as Test captain, and Shaheen Afridi’s as T20I captain.Soon after, Arthur and Bradburn saw their own roles significantly reduced, with the PCB saying they would be “reassigned”, without further clarification. They will not travel with the team to Australia, and while it was initially announced that Hafeez would take over as team director, there was no word on the head coach or the chief selector. Hafeez’s appointment as coach does complete the picture further, though the position of chief selector remains vacant, with Wahab Riaz the frontrunner.Pakistan depart for Australia on November 30, and play a warm-up game against the Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval from December 6 to 9. The first Test begins in Perth on December 14. After the three Tests, the side also plays five T20Is in New Zealand.

Goodwin and Rocchiccioli take WA past South Australia in tense finish

At one stage, South Australia needed two wickets with 33 runs to get, but Goodwin and Rocchiccioli kept their composure to finish the job for their team

Jayden Goodwin and Corey Rocchiccioli produced a stirring ninth-wicket partnership late on day three as Western Australia overcame South Australia by two wickets in a nerve-jangling Sheffield Shield match in Perth.Chasing 201 for victory on a grassy WACA surface, WA were on the cusp of a second straight defeat at 168 for 8. But Goodwin and Rocchiccioli defied the Redbacks’ bid of a boilover with a calm, unbroken 33-run stand.Rocchiccioli hit the running runs to spark jubilation in the terraces as WA bounced back from a horror trip to Sydney where they suffered big defeats to NSW in the Shield and the Marsh Cup.”We discussed at tea that we were going to be positive and get it done today,” said 21-year-old Goodwin, who finished unbeaten on 47 off 72 balls on his return to the side after replacing the injured Ashton Turner. It was heartbreak for South Australia, who in their last match had beaten Queensland by three runs in a similarly tense finish. After a dull draw between WA and Tasmania last month, the WACA surface was particularly spicy and just three half-centuries were struck in the low-scoring contest. The Redbacks needed to strike with the new ball, which had accounted for clumps of wickets earlier in the match. But skipper Sam Whiteman and Cameron Bancroft looked unruffled as they chipped away at the target with a 39-run opening stand. The match turned when Whiteman fell to a short delivery from Brendan Doggett, who shortly after banged a brutal delivery that thundered into Teague Wyllie’s elbow. After receiving medical attention, Wyllie retired hurt and a pumped-up Doggett was on a roll with the key wicket of Bancroft for 27. A visibly annoyed Bancroft trudged off having endured a rare sub-par match, having fallen for 20 to a rash cut shot in the first innings.Doggett continued his spectacular spell when he had Hilton Cartwright caught behind to leave WA shakily placed at 58 for 3 at tea. Goodwin and Aaron Hardie decided to counter-attack after the break as they compiled 37 runs in quick time.A desperate South Australia captain Jake Lehmann reverted to offspinner Ben Manenti for the first time in the innings, and the gamble worked with Manenti getting through Hardie’s defences before Josh Philippe fell to Doggett in a rash stroke to extra cover. When Manenti had Joel Paris chopping on to his stumps, the Redbacks could sense a famous victory with WA slumping to 105 for 6 and still 96 short with Wyllie’s status uncertain. But Charlie Stobo, who bats in the top four for his local grade club, hit a breezy 26 to swing the momentum WA’s way before falling to Nathan McAndrew. In another twist, Wyllie returned to the crease having undergone a couple of rigorous net sessions in between. He was peppered by short deliveries but showed no ill effects, and inched WA closer. Manenti again provided a pivotal breakthrough after Wyllie was trapped lbw failing to connect on a sweep shot.WA’s hopes would have sunk at that stage, but Goodwin and Rocchiccioli, who showed maturity in his 25 off 42 balls, came together as the shadows creeped on to the ground. The gripping finale seemed unlikely when South Australia struggled to build a lead. But Harry Nielsen led a lower-order fight-back with a half-century and he was well supported by Manenti, who top-scored with 66 to lift the Redbacks to a lead of 200.Manenti took the long handle to offspinning counterpart Rocchiccioli and smashed him for two sixes which landed in rubble amid the ground’s redevelopment. His cavalier 88-ball knock was ended by Lance Morris, who finished with 3 for 44 from 14.4 overs. Steadily building his bowling loads this season after a back injury, Morris was venomous on a hard surface and hit speeds of around 145 kph.Paris shrugged off a groin niggle, which forced him off the ground late on day two. The injury-plagued Paris dismissed any possible concerns by dismissing McAndrew after coming into the attack an hour into the day’s play. The topsy-turvy contest continued until Rocchiccioli’s winning boundary powered WA over the line and into top spot on the ladder.

He then dismissed Ajinka Rahane, Shivam Dube and Shams Mulani as Mumbai were restricted to 132 for 8. It was Mumbai’s only defeat in the group stage.Sai Kishore retires outSai Kishore walked out to bat at the start of the 18th over against Madhya Pradesh, with Tamil Nadu at 132 and looking to finish strong. It turned out to be a disappointing season overall for Tamil Nadu, managing just three wins and finishing fifth in their group.

The Rondo: Debating Club World Cup semis – are we headed for a Chelsea-PSG final, would a Real Madrid win actually be an upset, and does Thiago Silva have one more in him?

GOAL US writers discuss what to expect in the CWC finals – outcomes as expected, or surprises in store for the last four?

The Club World Cup semifinals have arrived, and we have a duo of compelling matches on our hands.

On one side is PSG-Real Madrid, two European heavyweights in different iterations of themselves. PSG are the best team in the world at the moment. Madrid are revamping, rebuilding, and rebranding. Based on those facts alone, and it would be a no-brainer.

But this is Real Madrid, and they always seem to find a way to turn it on for the big games.

And on the other is Fluminense, a heartwarming Brazilian team, against Chelsea, an evil capitalist entity, who can't stop spending money (or some might say). It's hard to imagine anyone not favoring Chelsea blue will be rooting for the English club, but they are certainly favorites – even if that means taking on the villain role they used to embody so well.

Perhaps it would have been ideal for the four best teams in the world to be in the CWC semifinals, but beggars can't be choosers and there is certainly intrigue here.

Are we careening to a PSG-Chelsea final? Will Real Madrid's voodoo return? And can Thiago Silva conjure one more defensive masterclass?

GOAL US writers break it all down in the Club World Cup semifinal edition of… .

AFPWho wins Madrid vs PSG?

Tom Hindle: PSG, and quite comfortably. Madrid are still in the beta-testing phase of their team, and aren't quite clicking yet. They have no real midfield and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be given actual nightmares by PSG's switchable wingers. The Parisians did themselves no favors by getting a couple late reds against Bayern, but they have the depth to make up for it. Lucas Beraldo next to Marquinhos? They will be just fine.

Jacob Schneider: With PSG shorthanded defensively, Madrid win. With Kylian Mbappe now in the mix, it's expected that he will start. Without both Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, PSG will fall to the Spanish outfit. That said, with Ousmane Dembele back and healthy, it will be interesting to see if PSG's attack can make up for their defensive shortcomings.

Alex Labidou: First off, praise the football gods for teeing this up. Call it a guess, but if there's ever been a match Mbappe is up for (outside of the World Cup he won in 2018), this is likely it. Mbappe's breakup with PSG is among one of the most drama-filled departures in recent memory. In fact, the Real Madrid star is still very much in a legal battle with his former club over millions of dollars he is claiming he's owed. If there was ever a chance to send a message, this is it. Fully expect Real Madrid and their French star to be fired up – and Madrid will narrowly defeat the European champs.

AdvertisementAFPWho wins Fluminense vs Chelsea?

TH: It really be Chelsea based on quality, budget and level of performance so far. But why not Fluminense, who could quite easily grab an early goal and dig in for 90 minutes? Throw in the fact that Chelsea will have to figure out how to play without Liam Delap – and will run out a semi-fit Reece James – and the pieces are here for an upset. Believe.

JS: Chelsea should advance, especially with Moises Caicedo back in the mix after missing their quarterfinal match. James is reportedly healthy and available for selection, which only bolsters their odds. For Fluminense, though, anything is possible – and this run has been nothing short of miraculous.

AL: Fluminese have been the one of the Cinderella stories of this tournament. Try not getting chills over the recently-released video of Thiago Silva firing up his teammates. But that story ends in the semifinals. After years of being mismanaged and languishing in irrelevance, Chelsea are back. And they have shown how potent they can be in this tournament. It will help that the Blues have already faced two Brazilian sides in the CWC, and that should ultimately serve them well here. Chelsea 2-0 and on to the final.

gettyWho will be the biggest difference maker?

TH: Jude Bellingham, if he decides he wants to play football again. It has been a rough tournament for the Englishman, and a talismanic showing here would give Madrid a far better chance. It would also be pretty handy if Alexander-Arnold could learn how to defend in the next 48 hours.

JS: For Madrid, it's Mbappe if he is back and healthy, while for Luis Enrique and PSG, the same goes for Dembele. Chelsea, meanwhile, will be without new star Liam Delap, so all eyes are on striker Nicolas Jackson – who has two red cards in his last three appearances across all competitions. Can he redeem himself? For Fluminense, it's Thiago "El Monstro" Silva. The 40-year-old veteran has captained them this far, and now he comes up against his former team from London. There's your storyline.

AL: This is a tough one but let's go with Antonio Rüdiger. With Dean Huijsen being sent off and unavailable for the semis, it's up to the German to keep things at bay with whomever he will be paired with against PSG. Rüdiger is arguably one of the world's top three defenders when it comes to marking and aerial prowess, but he's been known to lose his head – as he did in Madrid's Copa final last season. Xabi Alonso can ill-afford a repeat against PSG or Los Blancos will miss out on the CWC final.

Getty Images SportHow shocking would it be to have a Brazilian team in the final?

TH: It would be absolutely massive. If there is one thing that this tournament has proved, it is that South American football simply has to be taken seriously. They have already made something of a case with a couple of upsets and a semifinal berth. What's one more win?

JS: It would be a big wake-up call for how South American football is viewed, in general. The teams have started spending more and more in recent years, and it's starting to pay off. If Fluminense can manage the upset, it would put Serie A in Brazil on the map.

AL: It would be extraordinary considering the pride and quality shown by these sides, but its difficult to imagine Fluminese getting past Chelsea, let alone beating either PSG or Real Madrid. If they do it, the world should take notice and pay more attention to competitions such as the Copa Libertadores.
