Glasgow Rangers crashed out of the League Cup at Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon after they were beaten 3-1 by their city rivals.

Danny Rohl lost for the second time in four matches since his arrival at Ibrox, but it did take extra time for Celtic to eventually clinch their victory after a hard-fought 90 minutes.

The Gers had to dig in and fight for the majority of the match because they were sent down to ten men in the 38th minute when Thelo Aasgaard was given his marching orders.

How Thelo Aasgaard let Rangers down

The Norway international was in the team to provide creativity and flair in the left-sided central midfield position, but he had little impact on the match in his time on the pitch.

Aasgaard’s biggest contribution to the game was how his red card changed the match, as it meant that Celtic had an extra man advantage for the rest of the 90 minutes and extra time.

It was an unfortunate situation for the central midfielder, rather than a malicious challenge, as he caught Anthony Ralston whilst turning and attempting to control the ball.

Regardless, Aasgaard let his side down by putting his foot in that position to control the ball, which gave the referee a decision to make.

As you can see in the table above, his all-round play left plenty to be desired, as he lost the majority of his duels and lost the ball 14 times without registering a single shot on target.

The Portuguese centre-forward was then just as bad as Aasgaard in the 3-1 loss to Celtic because he missed two huge opportunities to find the back of the net in the first half when the score was 0-0.

Mohamed Diomande played a perfect ball across to the striker, who was unmarked in the middle of the box, but his effort veered wide of the target when it seemed harder to miss. It was a miss that caused Premier Sports TV pundit Michael Stewart to describe him as “so poor” during their live coverage.

The summer signing from Everton then evaded his marker at the back post to attack a sublime free-kick delivery from James Tavernier, only to fail to find the target from two or three yards out.

Chermiti’s lack of composure in front of goal ultimately cost Rangers because they could have been one or two goals up with those chances, but, instead, they failed to take the lead, then they went down to ten men and one goal down.

It was a dismal showing from the £8m summer signing, whose performance was as poor as Aasgaard’s, and that is why Rohl should ruthlessly ditch him from the starting line-up.

This comes as Bayern enjoy a flawless start to their Champions League campaign and sit top of the Bundesliga, with Hoeness crediting Kompany's management style for the club's current success and unity.

Hoeness, the influential honorary president of Bayern, has offered a glowing assessment of Kompany's tenure as head coach. Speaking on the podcast, Hoeness highlighted Kompany's nurturing yet demanding approach as a key factor in the team's impressive form.

"Today we have a coach who is like a mother hen, who wonderfully protects the players and yet teaches them everything on the training pitch, and most importantly, he makes every player better," Hoeness stated. He further praised Kompany's squad management, noting, "At the moment, I have to say that the opposite is true, because our coach is playing with us by not complaining."

Hoeness pointed to Kompany's successful integration of young talents like Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof as evidence of his positive impact. "That hasn't happened in a long time. Their Champions League campaign has been equally impressive, with a flawless record of four wins from four group stage matches. They have scored 14 goals and conceded only three, placing them at the top of the table ahead of their upcoming clash with Arsenal. Hoeness described the club as "truly a fortress again at the moment," emphasizing the "good numbers," "ambitious team," and "outstanding coach."

Kompany aiming to 'solve' Bayern weakness before Arsenal clash

Despite Bayern's rampant performances, Kompany is not completely satisfied with his side. Seeing his side go two goals down against Freiburg before a sensational 6-2 comeback win on Saturday angered the Belgian coach, exposing their need to improve how they defend set pieces. With a Champions League showdown against Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, a team famous for their deadly dead ball attacks, he is seeking an immediate solution to their weakness.

"I'm calm. We made mistakes in these phases as a team. We shouldn't hide, we should show personality and character to defend them," Kompany said. "We're also a good team in attacking set pieces, we scored from a corner today. We just have to stay calm and work to get out of this phase and show that we're also good in this department. 

"Everyone saw it, you'll write it now, the English press will say it too, Arsenal's analysts will see it as well. Every team we play against will now believe this is our moment. Then you can't hide. You have to show personality, character, and defend it. We have to solve this!"

Bayern will look to maintain their perfect Champions League record when they travel to face the London side on Wednesday. The two teams are level on points at the top of the table, having won all four of their matches so far. Bayern have scored 14 goals and conceded three, while Arsenal have the same goal difference with 11 scored and none let in. 

Arsenal have suffered just one defeat this season and head into the midweek clash off the back of a 4-1 win against Tottenham on Sunday, with new signing Eberechi Eze shining with a hat-trick.

Fresh from losing Rob Edwards, Middlesbrough have reportedly set their sights on a former Premier League striker who has since moved into manangement, with an endorsement from Gareth Southgate.

Things were all going well in Teesside. Boro had made an impressive start to the Championship campaign and Edwards was proving his worth in full as all involved set their sights on promotion. And that’s when Wolverhampton Wanderers came calling to spoil the party.

In one swoop, the Premier League side secured Edwards’ signature, leaving Middlesbrough without a manager and incredibly disappointed. The Championship side released a statement after the manager’s exit was confirmed, expressing their frustration.

Edwards, meanwhile, issued a statement of his own in attempt to control the damage done by his move – taking to social media to say: “This has been one of the toughest decisions of my career. In truth, I wouldn’t have considered leaving Middlesbrough for any other club.

“Wolves is a special club for me. It’s where I grew as both a player and a coach. It’s still where my family calls home. It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.”

His words are unlikely to change how those in Teesside are feeling and they won’t change the fact that they’ve now got to find a new manager as soon as they can during the international break.

To that end, rumours are already arriving as to who could arrive. Names such as Steven Gerrard and Tony Mowbray have already been mentioned as potential candidates and a move for the former would certainly make plenty of sense to follow in the earlier footsteps of Michael Carrick.

The Liverpool legend isn’t the only former Premier League player to be linked with the vacant position, however, with Hasselbaink also emerging as a candidate to arrive.

Middlesbrough now considering Hasselbaink move

As reported by Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Middlesbrough are now considering a move for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in what would hand the former Chelsea striker his first managerial role since his second spell at Burton Albion in 2022.

The 53-year-old has also taken charge of Royal Antwerp, Queens Park Rangers and Northampton, but his most impressive experience arguably came in a coaching role with England, where he impressed Southgate. The former Three Lions boss is now reportedly willing to give Hasselbaink a recommendation to Middlesbrough as they weigh up whether to hire the Dutchman.

Several England stars also chose to praise Hasselbaink as they reached the final of Euro 2024 before losing against Spain, with Trent Alexander-Arnold saying: “He knows the pressures and everything that comes with being a footballer and in tournament football too, so he is good to have around. He works a lot with the attacking players, more than anyone, helps us with the penalties and things so he is a great addition to the backroom staff.”

So, whilst the ex-Premier League star hasn’t been in the technical area for a number of years, his time with England suggests that he could be a viable option for Middlesbrough.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca seems to have pulled a major U-turn over one of his axed stars as a photo from Cobham training reveals his surprise change of heart.

The in-form Joao Pedro scored Chelsea’s only goal of the game to seal a dominant 1-0 victory over London rivals Tottenham, maintaining Chelsea’s impressive derby record, and followed that up with a comprehensive 3-0 triumph over bottom-side Wolves in their last match before the international break.

The victory came despite Maresca making eight changes from their midweek 2-2 draw with Qarabağ in the Champions League, continuing his rotation policy that has seen a grand total of 93 starting eleven changes in all competitions so far this season — the most of any Premier League side.

Their plethora of injury problems throughout the campaign, which has seen Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer, Benoit Badiashile, Enzo Fernández, Pedro Neto, Dario Essugo, Liam Delap, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Andrey Santos and Josh Acheampong all sidelined at various points, has forced Maresca’s hand in this regard.

Chelsea also have 25 players in their squad who’ve been given at least 45 minutes of playing time this term, with only Nottingham Forest and West Ham (24) coming anywhere close to that number.

Two of the only Chelsea players who’ve not seen a single minute thus far are ‘bomb squad’ outcasts Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi.

Both men, after failing to secure moves away in the summer, are training in isolation, with Sterling causing quite a stir when he posted an image of him training alone and very late at night in what looked like a barren training complex.

This social media post even prompted the PFA to intervene and ensure that Chelsea weren’t treating the duo unfairly, coming after Maresca previously stated there was no way back for either man and they’d continue training away from the group.

When asked if they could play their way back into the first team, Maresca’s reply was brief, and it was a resounding ‘no’ (The Mail).

Sterling, who spent last term on a failed loan spell at Arsenal, has been linked with a move to Celtic ahead of the January window. Disasi, meanwhile, was surprisingly spotted training with the first team this week — despite Maresca previously saying there was no way.

In a twist, The Mail have shared a photo from Cobham of Disasi tussling with Liam Delap in an international break session, with Maresca now going back on his word and allowing the Frenchman to compete with his squad after all.

While there was still no sign of Sterling, Disasi’s recall to first-team training makes for an intriguing development, and one which will make on-lookers wonder whether he’s done enough to earn back Maresca’s favour.

After playing only 18 per cent of available Premier League minutes under Maresca last term, Disasi failed to establish himself as a regular starter domestically, despite captaining them in the Conference League and largely playing as an emergency right-back.

Aston Villa sealed his loan signing for the remainder of 2024/2025 last January, coming after Disasi reportedly rejected a loan to Tottenham, insisting on competing with Unai Emery’s side in the Champions League instead.

Disasi’s brief flashes ultimately failed to convince Villa to make the move permanent, and when the summer transfer window opened, Disasi found himself back in Chelsea’s notorious bomb squad alongside Sterling.

Having rejected moves to Crystal Palace and West Ham among others, and despite rumoured interest from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Disasi snubbed multiple opportunities, leaving him stranded at Stamford Bridge.

With the January window looming, Maresca could well be planning to hand the 27-year-old some minutes as a way to drive up interest from suitors, but we’re purely speculating here.

With everything on the line, here's how the Spirit can top the Gotham FC for the 2025 NWSL Championship.

San Jose, Calif. – For the second year in a row, the Washington Spirit are headed to the NWSL Championship. Their journey to the final this year has been a bit different, with several setbacks, staffing changes, transfers, and more. Yet, the Spirit have made one thing clear, they're not about to repeat history in the finals. Last year, the Spirit fell to the Orlando Pride in the Championship 1-0. This year, they finished second overall in the league standings, and just last wee,k they punched their ticket to the finals after a 2-0 win over the Portland Thorns at Audi Field. 

So, how will the Spirit do against a Cinderella-run team like Gotham? Let's break it down.

  No. 1: The Gift of Monday

  Nigerian international Gift Monday has been the secret weapon to the Spirit's success this season. Monday has a team-best seven goals this season, and one of her most important goals came in the semifinals against Portland. 

  In just the 27th minute of play in the semis, Monday slotted home the game's first goal to push the Spirit ahead 1-0. It was the connection between Rosemonde Kouassi to Monday that truly set the tone for the match. 

  This is Monday's first year in the league, and she's now heading to her first final. She's known for her cheeky goals and celebrations, and mentioned Lo'eau LaBonta at media day as being her inspiration for goal celebrations. 

  Monday has been a natural fit for the Spirit's frontline, gelling naturally with Kouassi, Brittany Ratcliffe, Trinity Rodman, and, of course, the crafty midfielders like Croix Bethune, Leicy Santos, and Hal Hershfelt. Finding Monday hasn't been hard for any of her teammates, as she naturally finds space and has a nose for the goal.

  No. 2: Defensive prowess

  Tara McKeown took home the 2025 NWSL Defender of the Year award, being instrumental in leading the Spirit's backline all season. She had a total of 140 clearances, 55 interceptions, and 44 blocks so far. She's also been in this position before, being a critical defender during the playoffs last year, too. 

  McKeown's chemistry with the rest of her backline is obvious and one of the reasons they are going to be challenging to break down. Aubrey Kingsbury has been the tried and true keeper for the Spirit, and her calm presence keeps the entire team organized and in line. English international defender Esme Morgan has been a threat both on the attack and in the back, showcasing the versatility on the team. An important factor of this Spirit squad is the way they play defense all over the field. The defense truly starts with the attacking group, who put endless pressure on the ball and set the tone. 

  Hershfelt is bullish in the midfield and won't let anyone through unscathed.

  From top to bottom, the Spirit have made their case as a shutdown team and even with the star power up top, the pride is in the defense and will be crucial as they look to take home the 2025 NWSL Championship.

  No. 3: Cohesive grit

  The Washington Spirit finished second in the NWSL in goals scored (45) and first in shots on target (146) – numbers that reflect their all-in approach. If they need a goal, they’ll claw their way to one. If they need to protect their own box, they defend with a body-on-the-line mentality.

  During Media Day, nearly every Spirit player echoed the same ethos: “connected,” “family,” “team.” When one steps, another follows. The way they talk about each other is rooted in genuine admiration and respect. Great teams are built on that foundation, and the Spirit have found the balance between veteran leadership – like Andi Sullivan’s steady influence – and the new energy brought by players such as Gift Monday.

  Against Gotham FC, the Spirit will need to win individual battles without drifting from what’s worked all season. As Paige Metayer Hershfelt told GOAL on Media Day, preparing for a championship game “means not going away from what you’ve been doing – because it’s worked.”

  A win on Saturday would give Washington just their second NWSL Championship, and their first since 2021.

  Looking ahead

  The Spirit will face Gotham FC on Saturday, November 22 at 5pm ET on CBS and Paramount+.

After authoring MLB's first 50-home run, 50-stolen base season and winning the National League MVP award in 2024, Shohei Ohtani has picked up right where he left off. In Tuesday's season-opening win over the Chicago Cubs, Ohtani rapped out two hits. On Wednesday, after narrowly missing a home run in his first at-bat of the game, Ohtani belted a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning to give the Dodgers a 6-2 lead.

So, the Cubs, seeing firsthand the damage Ohtani had already done, decided to take no chances. Chicago intentionally walked Ohtani in his fourth plate appearance of the game in the top of the seventh inning—and the fans at the Tokyo Dome were not happy.

On the one hand, one can hardly get mad at the Cubs for not wanting to pitch to Ohtani, a three-time MVP and arguably the best baseball player on the planet. On the other hand, it was a perfectly understandable reaction from the fans in Japan, who have enjoyed every bit of the show that the Dodgers star has put on in his return to his native country.

Sports fans may recognize one of the photographers lined up along the ropes at Augusta National this weekend—MLB Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.

Griffey, the 13-time MLB All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, took up photography as a second career years ago after his baseball career ended. He's been credited for photographing MLB games, NFL games, MLS games and IndyCar events. He most recently shot the MLB opening series in Tokyo, Japan last month. This week, he's working for Masters.com taking photos of the major tournament.

Varun Chakravarthy picked up two key wickets and Jasprit Bumrah was also miserly with the ball.India’s entire top seven made contributions in the chase but it was Washington and Jitesh who finished the chase superbly with an unbeaten 43-run stand. Over the last couple of seasons, Manchester United have failed to deliver in the Premier League, as seen by the embarrassing 15th-placed finish last time around.

From poor recruitment to managerial mistakes, there have been countless reasons as to why the Red Devils have found themselves in such a position of late.

However, after spending a year at the helm at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim will still believe he is the man to take the club back to their former glory in the seasons ahead.

There have been glimpses of quality during the early months of the 2025/26 campaign, but the 40-year-old desperately needs to sustain such success on a consistent basis.

Numerous of his first-team players have certainly gone under the radar over recent weeks, with many not quite getting the credit they deserve for their showings in England’s top-flight.

Man Utd’s most underrated players in 2025/26 so far

Amorim’s renowned 3-4-2-1 system has allowed numerous players at United to reignite their Red Devils career, but none more so than winger Amad Diallo.

The Ivorian was often an impact player under the last management team, but he’s featured in all but one league outing under Amorim so far this campaign.

He’s already registered three combined goals and assists, with his only goal coming in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest – but it was certainly a strike to remember.

Underlying stats such as three big chances created and 1.3 successful dribbles per 90 – both the most in the squad – highlight his incredible ability on the transition for the Red Devils.

He’s not the only first-team member who hasn’t received enough praise, with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro resurrecting his career at Old Trafford over the last few months.

Many would have expected the 33-year-old to depart last summer, but he’s once again become a regular starter and has matched Amad for total appearances this season.

He’s already posted four goal contributions – the third highest in the squad – often popping up with the goods when needed in the final third of the pitch.

However, he’s been just as impressive defensively, making 2.9 tackles and winning 6.5 duels per 90 – handing Amorim the disruptive force he’s been craving at the heart of the side.

The United star who’s showing shades of McTominay

Casemiro will no doubt have benefited from the departure of Scott McTominay last summer, with the Scotsman’s move to Napoli freeing a role for him as a starter once again.

The 28-year-old spent a huge chunk of his professional career on the books at United, allowing him to rack up a total of over 250 senior appearances for his boyhood club.

He was at the heart of numerous memorable moments during his first team spell at the Theatre of Dreams, with the highlight undoubtedly being his long-range goal in the Manchester Derby.

However, despite producing such impressive performances, he often didn’t get the credit he deserved from the supporters, which no doubt aided his move to Italy.

In the last 18 months in Serie A, McTominay has registered 14 goals and six assists, leading to a Ballon d’Or nomination – an unthinkable feat given his inconsistency at United.

However, the club do have another hugely underrated player on their books at present, with centre-back Matthijs de Ligt finally starting to show why the hierarchy paid £43m for his signature in 2024.

The Dutchman was seen as the solution to the club’s defensive woes, but endured a tricky debut campaign – one that was no doubt a culture shock to the 26-year-old.

The same can’t be said in 2025/26, with the defender undoubtedly being one of the club’s shining lights over the last couple of months in the Premier League.

He’s featured in every single minute of the Red Devils’ league campaign to date, allowing him to produce some simply mind-boggling numbers in the process.

De Ligt, who’s been dubbed a “warrior” by Dev Bajwa, has made 1.6 tackles and won 5.6 duels per 90 – backing up Casemiro and providing another line of solidarity.

He’s also won 63% of his aerial battles to date, at an average of 3.3 per 90 – handing Amorim that dominant presence which he’s craved since taking the reins.

Other numbers, such as 88%of passes completed and 1.3 interceptions made per 90, further showcase his all-round quality, leading to Bajwa even claiming he’s the club’s “most underrated player”.

Many of the aforementioned numbers are similar to those of McTominay, who has also dominated aerially in Serie A this season, as seen by his tally of four headed goals already this season.

Both also possess the leadership qualities to lead a side forward, with both players no doubt wanting to achieve added success at their various clubs in 2025/26.

There’s no denying the defensive unit at Old Trafford has massively improved compared to last season, with De Ligt’s upturn in form certainly contributing to their success.

However, he hasn’t yet received as much praise as he deserves for his efforts, with the Dutchman likely to play a key role in any success under Amorim come the end of the campaign.

Just when Man United were looking like they might have turned a corner, they were brought crashing back down to earth against Everton on Monday night, with the Toffees emerging as 1-0 winners, in what was David Moyes’ first-ever win as a visiting manager at Old Trafford.
