Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca and BlueCo are gearing up for what could be an intriguing January transfer window, as one player reportedly eyes the Stamford Bridge exit door.

The west Londoners could be genuine Premier League title contenders, and their 3-0 statement win over Barcelona in midweek absolutely supports that theory.

Chelsea’s triumphant Champions League victory against the La Liga champions was the perfect way to prepare for their blockbuster face-off at home to Arsenal, and victory would see them close the gap to just three points.

However, a few players may not be along for the ride this season.

Chelsea are reportedly preparing for potential departures in January, as several current squad members seek routes out of London.

Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi remain the most problematic situations. Both players have been completely frozen out by Maresca, training separately from the first team in what has been dubbed the club’s “bomb squad.”

Sterling, who earns £325,000-per-week, and Disasi have been denied access to standard first-team facilities this term and will be desperate for January moves to resurrect their careers.

There is also the matter of second-string goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

Jorgensen has emerged as the highest-profile exit candidate among active squad members. The Danish goalkeeper is reportedly considering a January departure after finding himself firmly behind Robert Sanchez in the pecking order.

Jorgensen wants regular playing time to secure his spot in Denmark’s 2026 World Cup squad, with national team bosses making clear he needs consistent minutes.

However, Chelsea are reluctant to sanction a loan, and any departure would need to be permanent.

Promising young shot-stopper Mike Penders is also due back from his loan at Strasbourg in 2026, acting as a ready-made replacement for Jorgensen, and there are reports that Chelsea have reopened talks with AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.

If the latter were to arrive, Jorgensen’s game time would be even more limited, so it is hard to envisage a future where the Dane is playing regularly enough in a Blues shirt.

However, his position in the starting lineup has come under scrutiny, given the Celts’ do have other good central midfield options, namely Nygren, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo.

However, Hatate’s mercurial talent and exquisite ability makes him a dream for any manager and, based on how his Columbus Crew team like to play, Nancy will surely make the Japanese international a central figure in his team, once he does arrive.

Meanwhile, which usually less heralded figure will also surely have impressed the incoming manager with his display at De Kuip?

Celtic's "world class" talent stars vs Feyenoord

There were many heroes bedecked in green and white hoops during Thursday’s victory over Feyenoord.

Teenaged full-back Colby Donovan was immense, Luke McCowan was excellent out of position, despite his inexplicable early miss, while Daizen Maeda worked his socks off as always.

Meantime, one of the surprise starters when the team sheets dropped was Yang, chosen over Sebastian Tounekti, Nygren and Michel-Ange Balikwisha by O’Neill, but the Korea Republic international certainly repaid the manager’s

Yang lashed home Celtic’s equaliser on the half-hour mark, connecting with Hatate’s looping cross, the ball squirming in between Wellenreuther and the post.

This was only Yang’s second goal of the season, also on target against Partick Thistle in the League Cup in September beforehand, but this one was rather more important.

Overall, he was a constant threat at De Kuip.

Since arriving from Gangwon FC in July 2023 under Brendan Rodgers, Yang has flattered to deceive, showing glimpses of quality but only doing so on a very irregular basis.

Upon making the move, Gangwon’s then-club president Kim Byung-ji stated that he had “world class” potential, backing him to become as good as the national team’s all-time leading scorer Son Heung-min.

Max Cleworth emerged as the saviour for Wrexham as the defender grabbed a dramatic late equaliser to maintain an unbeaten run for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's side in the Championship. The hosts fell behind through an early goal from former Barcelona star Eidur Gudjohnsen's son, Andri, and it was only in the final minute of stoppage time that Cleworth found the equaliser to salvage a point for the hosts.

• Cleworth to the rescue for Wrexham

  Wrexham began the afternoon with confidence and control, stroking the ball around with composure and keeping Blackburn penned in for much of the first 10 minutes. But that early promise counted for little as the visitors struck with their very first meaningful attack to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. A quick move down the right opened Wrexham up. Ryoya Morishita found space to thread a pass into Ryan Alebiosu, who had been given far too much room to measure his delivery. The winger floated a teasing cross into the box, where Gudjohnsen rose above his marker to guide a looping header beyond Arthur Okonkwo. The goal stunned the home crowd after what had been a positive Wrexham start. Blackburn almost doubled their advantage moments later when Alebiosu again surged forward. His clipped cross found Yuki Ohashi arriving at the back post, but the Japanese forward miscued his volley badly and dragged it wide.

  Despite falling behind, Wrexham recovered their structure and continued to probe. Their best moment of the half came from a move down the right when Ryan Longman sent in a precise delivery toward the far post. Captain James McClean met it cleanly with a firm header, only to crash it into the side-netting. But aside from that scare, Blackburn defended with discipline, shutting down space in midfield and forcing Wrexham to play in front of them rather than through them. As the interval approached, the visitors increasingly slowed the tempo, happy to protect their single-goal advantage. By half-time, Phil Parkinson’s men were left frustrated, trailing 1-0 and struggling to turn possession into genuine chances.

  The second half began with Blackburn carrying the greater threat. Wrexham’s attempt to build momentum was abruptly interrupted at 57 minutes when a loose pass was intercepted high up the pitch. Ohashi darted into the penalty area, chopped onto his right foot, and forced Okonkwo into a strong save at his near post. Gudjohnsen, sniffing his second of the afternoon, pounced on the rebound but blazed over from close range. It was a massive let-off that kept Wrexham alive. Sensing the game slipping away, Parkinson made a bold triple substitution just before the hour mark. Josh Windass, George Dobson and Callum Doyle were all introduced in place of Lewis O’Brien, Ben Sheaf and Dan Scarr. However, the substitutes struggled to make an impact, and instead Makhtar Gueye could have scored the insurance goal for Blackburn after his cross took a wicked deflection and almost trickled into the near post. 

  In the final quarter, the hosts, backed by a roaring home crowd, found a spring in their step. Blackburn were living dangerously, and Kiefer Moore, who had been an anonymous figure for most of the afternoon, came close to equalising in the 84th minute. The referee added five minutes, and from a set-piece, Wrexham finally found the leveller in the 95th minute. Dobson delivered a teasing cross into the box, which was headed back into the danger zone by Moore. The loose ball fell kindly for Broadhead, who unleashed a powerful volley towards goal. The shot took a deflection off Cleworth and nestled into the net to bring down the roof at the Racecourse. Following the draw, Wrexham climbed to the ninth spot with 26 points from 18 matches and will be back in action against Preston on December 6.

  The MVP

  Although Cleworth's goal helped secure a point for Wrexham, it was a fortuitous effort that went in. On the other hand, Gudjohnsen's finish was a typical poacher's goal. He timed his run to perfection, crept behind his marker, and had little trouble putting his header into the back of the net. 

• The big loser

  Makhtar Gueye was introduced as a substitute in place of goalscorer Gudjohnsen in the 70th minute. He had a golden opportunity to double his team's lead, within a minute after coming on, but his attempt found the wrong side of the net. To make matters worse, he was on the goal line in the dying seconds but was a fraction late to react to Cleworth's deflection, and could only watch as the ball rolled across the line. An unlucky 20 minutes for the Senegalese!

Eight matches into his Rangers tenure, is Danny Röhl any closer to figuring out which players he can trust and who he cannot?

On Thursday night, the Gers were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Braga at Ibrox, despite taking the lead through James Tavernier’s spot-kick in first half stoppage time; the fact that only 38,014 spectators were in attendance encapsulates the mood.

So, with just one point on the board after five games, a frankly pitiful effort, unless they somehow manage to beat Ferencváros, Ludogorets Razgrad and then Porto, which seems unlikely if we’re being honest, the Gers’ Europa League adventure will be coming to a premature end in January, having got all the way to last season’s quarter-finals.

This will allow them to concentrate on domestic matters, which may be a good thing, given that they’ve slipped down to fifth in the Premiership table, despite having won all four league matches since Röhl’s arrival in Glasgow.

So, ahead of a visit from Falkirk, who would actually leapfrog their hosts with a shock victory at Ibrox on Sunday, what changes should the German head coach make?

Youssef Chermiti's uninspiring form

Back on Monday, it was announced that both chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell had been sacked, after overseeing a chaotic summer of recruitment, with the £8m, potentially rising to £10m, paid to sign Youssef Chermiti among the more egregious and baffling of their decisions.

So far, he has scored just one goal for the club, on target against Kilmarnock last month, already surpassing his tally of zero goals during two seasons at Everton, also brought to Merseyside by Thelwell for £14m when he was working at Goodison.

Aside from his lack of goals, the striker simply isn’t offering enough, often allowing matches to pass him by and putting in anonymous performances.

Following this week’s draw with Braga, Mark Atkinson of the Scotsman asserted that he is driving supporters ‘demented’, adding that he ‘spurned a couple of presentable’ opportunities and is so far proving to be a mere baffling expensive purchase.

So, ahead of a sequence of three Premiership matches in seven days, facing Falkirk, Dundee United and then Kilmarnock, Chermiti should be stood down and Röhl must instead deploy the “best player in the league” up front.

Rangers' superior Chermiti alternative

Of the 13 players Rangers signed in the summer, many are young and inexperienced, hoping to grow and improve in the coming years, but Bojan Miovski was supposed to be a ready-made starter, brought in to produce right away.

The 26-year-old, returning to Scottish football after a season at Girona, is a proven goalscorer at both club and international level, bagging his ninth goal for North Macedonia against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium earlier this month.

Meantime, at club level, prior to his season in Catalonia, he had been outstanding during two years at Aberdeen, as the table below documents.

As the table makes clear, Miovski was an elite-level finisher during his time at Pittodrie, scoring 32 Premiership goals, while his strike rate in Europe as well as against the two Glasgow giants underlines his quality.

Then-teammate Nicky Devlin asserted that Miovski was “the best player in the league in his position”, firing the Dons to a third place finish in 2022/23, before being sold for £6.8m, the Dons’ record outgoing transfer.

However, we are yet to see very much of that from Miovski in a Rangers jersey, scoring his first goal for the club against Hibs in the League Cup, while his only Premiership goal came at Falkirk Stadium in October, the day Russell Martin was sacked.

Since the appointment of Röhl, the North Macedonian has featured in all eight matches but has started just once, this coming at Dens Park before the international break, substituted at half time with the Light Blues leading Dundee 2-0.

So, for whatever reason, the German head coach appears to favour Chermiti and Danilo, despite the fact that Miovski is a proven goalscorer at both Premiership and European level, something this team desperately needs given that, 26 matches into this campaign, Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama are the only squad members who have four or more goals to their name.

Thus, when Falkirk visit Ibrox this weekend, surely Röhl has to bring Miovski back into his XI, ditching the ineffective Chermiti, with the former looking to net as he did against the Bairns once again, just as he did in Stirlingshire just last month.

Ackeem Auguste and Roston Chase struck fifties to help West Indies to a five-wicket win in the third T20I against Bangladesh in Chattogram.Romario Shepherd’s hat-trick had earlier helped their cause for the 3-0 triumph, after Bangladesh were bowled out for 151 runs. The series sweep comes at the right time for West Indies, who had lost seven bilateral T20I series in a row, coming into this series.Auguste and Chase put on 91 runs for the fourth wicket, after they lost three early wickets. Auguste peppered the leg-side with five sixes against the Bangladesh spinners, while the stand-in captain Chase got his boundaries all around the wicket.Bangladesh had earlier collapsed from 107 for 2 in the 15th over, to be bowled out for 151 in 20 overs. They lost eight wickets for 44 runs in the last 5.3 overs, including Shepherd’s hat-trick spread over two overs. He was unaware of his achievement, until Jason Holder happily informed him from mid-off.

Jangoo surprises for WI

Bangladesh restricted West Indies’ openers in the first three overs of the chase. The returning Mahedi Hasan got Alick Athanaze stumped for 1 and Amir Jangoo was also struggling to get going. But he had luck on his side. A mix-up between Litton Das and Saif Hassan gave him a let-off in the second over, before substitute Towhid Hridoy dropped a skier at mid-off.Jangoo then took on Taskin Ahmed in his first over. He started with a crisp flicked six off the first ball, before driving and pulling for three more fours in the 18-run over.Bangladesh hit back with Nasum Ahmed removing Brandon King in the sixth over. Jangoo struck two more fours before Rishad Hossain had him lbw in the eighth over. Jangoo’s 23-ball 34 provided West Indies the boost their 152-run chase needed after a slow start.

Auguste packs a punch

Auguste built on Jangoo’s innings. Like Jangoo, his first six was also a beautifully flicked six off Taskin. Chase, who was dropped on 10, struck three boundaries to get going, before Auguste took on Rishad. He used the flick off the first ball of the 13th over, before hitting him for two more on the leg-side. Tanzid shines again

Bangladesh had earlier got off to a decent start after deciding to bat first. Tanzid Hasan hit three fours in the first three overs, before Holder dropped him at mid-off on 12. Tanzid kept Bangladesh forceful in the powerplay, lofting Akeal Hosein for a six over square-leg.Parvez Hossain and Litton though fell cheaply, before Tanzid and Saif added 63 runs for the third wicket. Saif started with a six over square-leg against Chase, followed by Tanzid hitting his second off Khary Pierre. Tanzid cracked two fours off Shepherd in the 11th over, before he lofted Gudakesh Motie for his third six in the next over.Rovman Powell dropped Tanzid on 57, although it was a tough chance at long-on. West Indies’ luck though would change from the 15th over. There's an old adage in baseball—and in life: Control what you can control.

Pittsburgh Pirates star pitcher Paul Skenes ascribes to that belief. But in the aftermath of the Pirates' 1-0 loss to the Philadephia Phillies on Sunday, a game in which Skenes yielded just one run in eight innings pitched, the 22-year-old admitted that striving to do so has been "difficult" lately.

"Not everything is within any other individual in here's power," Skenes said when asked if it's been difficult to see strong results not leading to team wins. "That's how we get going a little bit. Just control what we can control on an individual level. That's been my focus. That's always been my focus."

"That's probably been a little bit more difficult this last month or so, but there's nowhere else to go but to keep going. Just got to keep going."

A Phillies run, scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning, was all Skenes permitted. But it was all Philadelphia needed against the Pirates lineup, which was blanked by Phillies starter Mick Abel, who tossed six shutout innings in his big league debut.

Unfortunately, the Pirates' spoiling a stellar Skenes start is nothing new. Sunday's game marked the sixth time Pittsburgh has lost when Skenes has allowed one run or fewer in a start, according to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan.

It's enough to make a man look like this.

The juxtaposition of the Pirates' lack of success vs. Skenes's brilliance is simply astounding—and has to be contributing to the young ace's helpless feeling. Above all, Skenes feels a responsibility to the city of Pittsburgh to reverse the fortunes of the Pirates, who have endured six straight losing seasons.

Thus far, the Pirates (15-32) sit in last place in the National League Central and earlier in May fired manager Derek Shelton. It's all happened despite Skenes's best efforts on the mound—he's tied for fifth among all pitchers in WAR in 2025.

It's not hard to see why he'd feel a bit frustrated. And he's not the only one.
