Pirates Make Bizarre MLB History After Being Held Scoreless in Sweep vs. Mariners

The Pittsburgh Pirates thought they'd hit their stride after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series which ran from June 30 to July 2. The Pirates didn't surrender a single run all series against their division rivals and then set off for the Pacific Northwest in hopes of staying hot against the Seattle Mariners.

Fresh off their three consecutive shutouts in their sweep of the Cardinals, Pittsburgh's bats were unable to stay hot. In a stunning turn, the Pirates proceeded to drop all three games of the series against the Mariners and failed to put up a single run of their own.

According to Opta Stats, that's the first time in MLB history a team has had "back-to-back series of three-plus games with a sweep of shutouts for and against, in either order."

That's baseball for you.

Paul Skenes, who was named a National League All-Star on Sunday, started the rubber match of the series in Seattle. He struck out 10 across five scoreless innings before being removed at just 78 pitches. The Pirates surrendered a home run in the sixth inning and lost the game, 1–0.

They'll hope to avoid making it four straight shutouts when they take the field on Monday against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Walker Buehler to Join National League Contender After Release From Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox parted ways with veteran right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler last week, but it didn't take long for him to find a new home in MLB.

Buehler is reportedly finalizing a deal to join the Philadelphia Phillies, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Passan notes that Buehler will be eligible to pitch for the Phillies in the postseason.

Buehler, 31, struggled across 23 appearances in his lone season with the Red Sox. He made 22 starts and owned a 5.45 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 55 walks across 112 1/3 innings. The two-time All-Star hasn't been the same since he missed a full season in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the Phils are hopeful he can make an impact in October.

The move comes a few days after Zach Wheeler was placed on the 60-day IL and ruled out for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome.

Philadelphia currently holds a 6 1/2 game lead over the New York Mets in the NL East, and their .581 winning percentage is second best in all of MLB.

Vladimir Guerrero Did His Best Superman Impression Sliding Into Home in ALDS Game 3

Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reinforced his larger-than-life reputation this postseason with yet another huge moment in Game 3 of the ALDS vs. the Yankees on Tuesday night.

After Blue Jays' Ernie Clement hit a ground ball to left field at the top of the third, Guerrero, leading off from second, took off toward home. But when it looked like he might not make it—whether he could sense the ball behind him or just had a Yankees hatred-fueled gut feeling—the first baseman opted to launch himself comically high into the air then slide toward home in his best attempt at making up the distance between him and another Blue Jays run.

Amazingly, he made it … and had the most pumped-up reaction to his Superman-esque play, which extended Toronto's lead at the time to 4–1.

Watch that below:

Should the Yankees, now trailing 6–3 at the top of the fourth (and down two games in the series), want to keep their postseason alive, they'll have to hope Guerrero, who also has a home run tonight, avoids channeling another comic book hero long enough for them to make up the deficit.

Shohei Ohtani Is Now the Only Member in Yet Another 50-50 Club

Shohei Ohtani became the first Major League Baseball player in history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season last year, accomplishing the incredible feat amid much fanfare. This year, able to pitch again after returning from injury, he has charted new ground yet again by becoming the sole member of another 50-50 club; this time becoming the first to post 50 dingers and 50 strikeouts.

Ohtani hurled five hitless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies in what would become a 9-6 defeat, fanning five batters to bring his total to 54 on the year. He's right on the half-century mark when it comes to his own long ball total and carries a 1.006 OPS as the season reaches its final weeks.

Now, racking up 50 strikeouts on the mound in this day and age of swings and misses isn't the most impressive thing in the world. Doing it in 41 innings of work sure is, though.

Whenever Ohtani's career ends there are going to be countless stats and feats to sift through as we try to decide if he's the greatest player of all time. Becoming a founding member of two different clubs showcasing the diversity of his talent in back-to-back years will certainly be one of them.

Aaron Judge Passes Joe DiMaggio in Style With Career HR No. 362 Over the Monster at Fenway

If you’re going to make history, you might as well do it in style.

On Friday, Yankees slugger Aaron Judge took over sole possession of fourth place on the franchise’s all-time home run list, breaking a tie with legend Joe DiMaggio with career dinger No. 362. Judge had just matched DiMaggio yesterday, with two home runs against the Tigers.

Facing off against the Red Sox on Friday, Judge decided to one-up himself in terms of showmanship, smashing his tie-breaking home run all the way over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park.

Look at this tater.

And here it is from the ump cam. Delightful.

Judge currently sits at 362 home runs in pinstripes. The only three players in front of him are all legends—Lou Gerhig (493), Mickey Mantle (536) and Babe Ruth (659).

While it might take a while for Judge to jump up to the next spot on the list, we’re undoubtedly in for plenty more unbelievable highlights between now and then.

Yankees Star Aaron Judge Wins Third AL MVP Award After Another Outstanding Season

Aaron Judge put forth yet another magnificent season for the Yankees in 2025, and he’s been rewarded with his third AL MVP award.

Despite fierce competition in the form of Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Judge earned his second consecutive MVP and third of his career. The New York superstar hit 53 home runs and led the league in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, and OPS+. His 137 runs also ranked first in MLB.

Judge’s efforts helped lead the Yankees to a 94–68 regular season. New York advanced past the wild card round by beating the rival Red Sox in three games, but fell to the Blue Jays in the divisional round.

The 33-year-old slugger has been considered one of the best hitters in baseball for years now and this season proved no exception. For much of the season he was the primary, and occasionally only, source of offense for the pinstripes. He was so dangerous that, in addition to all his league-leading hitting stats, he also ranked first in intentional walks with 36. Judge was rewarded earlier this year for his efforts with his seventh All-Star nod.

What’s more, Judge shook off whatever remained of the perception that he struggled in postseason baseball with a strong playoff run. The Yankees’ slugger batted .364 against Boston in the wild-card round and .600 against Toronto in the divisional, totaling 13 hits and seven RBIs in seven games played. It wasn’t enough to push the Yankees over the finish line and return to the World Series but there’s no question Judge delivered upon the promises of another great regular season.

Judge becomes the 16th player in MLB history to win back-to-back MVP awards with his 2025 win. Another historic achievement for the big hitter.

Why Playing in Toronto in World Series Will Be Special for Freddie Freeman

When Freddie Freeman takes the field on Friday night for Game 1 of the World Series, it will feel like he's playing in one of his homes away from home at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. While Freeman's job with the Dodgers in their quest to capture back-to-back championships will be front and center on his mind, playing baseball in Canada, in which he holds dual citizenship along with the United States, will be special for both he and his family.

"Yeah my dad is obviously going to head out there tomorrow as well," Freeman said Tuesday. "So it's going to be pretty special. And I'm not so sure the Canadian fans, Blue Jays fans, will be cheering for me this time around like it was in the World Baseball Classic the last couple of times. But it is special."

Freeman played for Canada in both the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics, changing his representation to Canada through his citizenship from his parents. Freeman's return to Toronto will also be an emotional one, given that he'll be returning to the city where his mother grew up. She died after being diagnosed with melanoma when he was just 10 years old.

"Both my parents are born and raised in Canada, especially in the providence of Ontario—my mom from the Toronto area. My dad from Windsor," Freeman continued. "So, it is special. Everytime I go there, you just have this feeling inside that you feel just a little bit closer to my mom. So I'm looking forward to it."

And even though Freeman will be playing against the Blue Jays, he's still excited about what the team has accomplished thus far, given his Canadian roots.

"I mean, that’s special,’" Freeman said. "When you have a whole country that you know is behind one team, that’s pretty amazing. And then, obviously, what they’ve done. They’ve invested in their team, into that stadium, the visiting clubhouse, they’ve put a lot into the Toronto Blue Jays.

"So to just see the city come together, and get to experience so much jubilation that they had going to the World Series for the first time in 30-plus years, you know it’s an exciting time. And being from Canada, it’s pretty cool."
